My theory as to why the salmon count was down 88% last year from five years ago is that the fish were smart enough to realize it is not a good idea to enter the spawning waters during a 137 year drought when we didn't get any rain. It wouldn't surprise me at all that we find the salmon double up this year and fishing will be terrific. But how will we know? The idots will close it down first. Cancil my downrigger order please. A redneck was stopped by a game warden recently with two ice chests full of fish. He was leaving a cove that's well-known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man: 'Do you have a license to catch those fish?' 'No, sir,' replied the redneck. 'I ain't got none of them there licenses, these here are my pet fish.' 'Pet fish?' 'Yeah, every night, I take these here fish down to the lake and let 'em swim 'round for awhile. Then, when I whistle, they jump right back into these here ice chests and I take 'em back home.' 'That's a bunch of crap! Fish can't do that.' The redneck looked at the warden for a moment and then said, 'It's the truth, Mr. Government Man, I'll show ya It really works.' 'OK,' said the warden. 'I've got to see this!' The redneck poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After several minutes, the warden says, 'Well?' Well, what?,' says the redneck. The warden says, 'When are you going to call them back?' 'Call who back?' ‘The FISH,' replied the warden. 'What fish?' replied the redneck. |

Like Will says the salmon problem is extremely intricate, it's not just the fault of one person or managers, but a whole lot of things put to together. Not that the managers are not too blame, but I think it's just not DFG that's the problem. It's managers from DFG, Water, Delta, and on and on. The bigger problem is that managers, unless political appointees, can't be fired. So, all the complaining we do really doesn't mean much to them! The State system of employment needs to be changed so people who work for the state and make these bad decisions that affect the citizens, you know the one's they supposedly work for, can be held accountable for their stupidity. Also, here's a question: Why does DFG have an Ocean Salmon Project and an Inland Salmon Project? We all know how well interagency communication works, so why manage a species with two seperate groups? Shouldn't they work together? Bottom line, if we want to get things fixed we need to quit complain'n and actually do something. |

My understanding, after being around for 56 years and observing the fish situation, is that two factors determine population fluxuation and or decline. First, there are cyclical patterns of weather and other environmental factors which affect population numbers in a natural way. Droughts on land and current variations at sea are examples which affect our salmon runs and the relative abundance of albacore close to shore. El Nino is a recently understood weather phenomenon which is cyclical in nature. The second factor, which is far more devastating to the environment is human greed. Long lining off Hawaii by the Japanese has decimated the pelagic fish populations here. Dams built on coastal rivers have endangered anadromous species along the west coast. Insensitive development in riparian areas has destroyed habitat for steelhead. The list goes on. I contend that sportsmen are the true conservationists and it is our job to continue to persue the truth about our fisheries and to help to enhance them. We need to point out bad science (that which is politically motivated) when we see it and to stand up against those with no background in the field or out at sea who get their information from politicians. Aloha, Will |

News from the trib. http://www.sanluisobispo.com/breakingnews/story/262753.html Abalone poachers caught in the act near Carmel By Associated Press State game wardens say they caught two abalone poachers in the act just south of Carmel. Jonathan Conner of Salinas and Tony Le of Castroville had allegedly bagged 122 mollusks when they were discovered at Soberanes Point. California Fish and Game warden Jess Mitchell says the 21-year-old Conner and 19-year-old Le have been charged so far with misdemeanor illegal possession of abalone. They could also be facing a felony conspiracy charge. Nearly all the 122 abalone allegedly taken by the pair were the rare black abalone. California’s black abalone population has suffered in recent decades from over-harvesting and disease. The federal government wants the mollusk declared an endangered species. Kevin - Nipomo |

I agree, Blackie. This issue pits 2 environmental activists’ factions against each other. The only practical solution to the S.J. river solution is to come up with more water. Environmental interests have led the movement that has pretty much stopped the damming of Fine Gold Creek just above Millerton Lake. Ample water to fit all needs can be captured and stored by building one or two more lakes just above Millerton. That's not likely to happen as long as those groups that want to restore the flow are working against those that have proposed a practical solution. I'm sure it much more complicated than I have pointed out, but the solution seems reasonably clear to me. Bottom line is that the Fed’s and courts have said that 2013 is the last date a solution must be in place. I'm done ranting for now... |

Good read Bruce; You can bet there will be no salmon season this year and probaly next , who says that all the dams and pumping water out of delta doesnt hurt the fisheries well theres the proof , and our so called fish managers caused it all or were responsible for it happening, by diverting water and all the other BS they do , Gee I wonder how many salmon were in that last kill. |

Baja Travellers, Some of the more heinous crimes have occured just south of Tijuana against American fisherman travelling south in the early morning hours. One particular event made it to the papers and has circulated in great detail around the internet fishing sites like Bloodydecks.com, et al. You are NOT immune on the highway. These thugs are getting technical and using firepower. This particular event involved the use of a car that mimicked a police cruiser which redlighted 2 travellers in separate vehicles towing a new boat and gear. One vehicle got away when they were approached by obvious thugs while the others occupants were taken out, placed on their knees and had guns held to the back of their heads. These guys were seconds from execution but something prevented it. Their vehicle, boat, and gear was all stolen and they barely escaped from the corrupt country back to the U.S. American travellers that are driving in country are easy prey for these likely cartels. Hell, they have even challenged our Border Patrol on the Arizona Border with heavy weaponry in the recent past during an actual incursion into the U.S. Bad scene and getting worse! Air travel is probably your safest bet so you bypass all the potential bullshit that can happen. |

to add to belowe, im not impress with the improvements. the power that comes from guerro now(instead of the local gen-set) is constantly down and the towns people are very upset. my buddy got back yesterday and the power was down the entire time(no gas). the roads are uneven wich makes it very difficult to get around both sides of the highway and has poor drainage. w'ill deal with it. |

my buddy was shot at 4 in the mourning while traveling north through la salina area(north baja) just bafore the toll booth. it was a attempted car jacking and he had his wife and familly with him with a two axle trailler in tow. they tried too box him in with two vehicles when he attempted too escape they shot through his driver door with a 9 mil and the bullit passed through his thigh and landed on the floorboard. he rammed the truck with his trailler and tore off one of the tires and spindle in the attemped to get away. he was succesfull!! they treated him at the border and took him to the hospital were he was fixed up and releases as it didnt hit any vital areas. i was just going through the border south when i got the news on my cell that he was allright, i was very nervous heading south. he does not hesitate to go down in a heart beat as he knows this was a isolated insident. this is the reason i dont drive the northern border at night anymore, i allso will not camp there or leave my vehicle out of sight. yes steve i leased a lot 4 miles south of town in a very secure area, i built a garage with a large pallapa that covers a 30' trailler. i have a full solar system for electrical and a water system and pilla. we go down every 2 months to fi |
