Jim, That's a good idea, seeing as these guys put 14 to 20 hours into building the rods let alone paying for the supplies, that becomes a huge donation. Joe Anderton is doing the same, he is donating supplies to Larry Holt to build a rod. Thanks for your support. |

Suggestion for the Kids on the sea fundraiser.... I will donate the price of materials to build one rod, hopefully a rod builder would be kind enough to donate his time and build a rod to be auctioned off. If we could get a few other fishermen to do the same it will be a win win for the kids. |

Kids on the ocean fundraiser, I never thought referring someone on this board would create tention. If you have a rod builder you like refer him, use him. There is no reason to challenge another mans product, without knowing anything about his product. I have learned not to make personal referals unless I know it is 110% plus. Larry Holt, has already volunteered to donate a rod to Kids ON THE SEA. Larry, has also donated to CCFCC. His last rod donated auctioned for over $400.00 dollars. The price alone speaks for the quality of his work and craftsmanship. Larry, also donates a rod to the Friends Of Rollo, every year. As to the subject of beer being served and the severs taking control of over drinking, we are wide open for more volunteers. Instead of pointing the finger at the good people helping out donating time, money and doing a great job, feel free to join us, your help and positve imput will be greatly appreciated. Last year there were two persons I recall out of two hundred and fifty, participants that were a little out of hand. Each of the persons were taken aside and talked with. Will Batemean, posted a short time back asking people to please be considerate this year of everyone around them. I'm sure the message was received and understood. Best regards, Joseph & Tami Anderton BBQ P.S. CCFCC. has made a donation to Kids On the Sea. They also are having their yearly fundrasier on Saturday, April 5th. Join in have some fun helping out another great organization. |

John, I agree with you, but the reason we haven't charged for drinks in the past is that we would have to deal with the state board of equilization and pay for insurance on the building. In my experience (from both sides of the fence) those who are drunk and stupid do most of their drinking before they get there. we really don't go through very much alcohol at these events. Hopefully there will be a different tone to this fundraiser since it is for kids. Anyone who does want to help on the trips or has something do donate for raffle or auction can contact me at 771-9873. Thanks for all of the support, these trips are very cool, I will bring some pictures of the last one to the dinner. It's chaos but rewarding when the kids get into it. Tom and Larry- a custom wrapped rod would be a great donation, let the kids decide who is best (I already know). |

Joe,free beer???? Why??? A modest price should be charged...Some of the guests the last couple years have had to much and their behavior was not what young adults or anyone for that matter need to observe, it is not "funny" to hear or see loud drunk fisherpersons....The cause is worthy and I will personally help teach kids the proper ways of the sea..but that also goes for behavior....on the water and off..There are many people on this chat board that know what I am talking about and this year I would like the servers to take control and anybody else if a guest seems have had to much.....If you have never seen children fishing you need to....It will be one of the most rewarding things you will do...This is a GREAT idea...Thanks and good luck John |

Hello Rob, 24 years ago, Salmon, season started Febuary 15th. I can not remenber the exact date the rules changed. The second change went to March 1st. The next change was March 15th. The last change not so long ago they changed it to the first Saturday, in April. This did not bother me to much till last year when the first Saturday, in April, was the 7th. Now this year it is the 5th. I can remember times when we were fishing in January, and caught incidental Salmon, it really helped us out knowing where to start the season looking for them. The explanation given in those days by DFG. was it would allow more Salmon, to reach the river systems. As with every other rule making process they just kept moving the start date back futher. The official word today is our season will open April 5th. The DFG. has to give a 10 day notice before any season can be closed. My guess is as good as anyones, they could use the low fish count information to change anything at any time. THe northern Salmon, opener is Febuary 15th. Looking forward to spending as many days on the water as possible whatever the season length is. Hopefully 6 months. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ |

I'm going to be changing my home port from Moro Bay to Gold Beach Oregon this year, around the end of June. Debating whether to pull the boat up there or sell and buy something local. |

joe- so with the dates you gave, we at the very least will get most of the month of april? if the season starts on the fifth? also maybe you or someone else can explain the reasoning (dare i ask) of the dates of a salmon season? are the salmon moving through our area in bigger numbers between the closed dates? or were the dates set long ago to minimize the overall catch? and one more for darby or?, what is the plan for live bait this year? i would guess the wind in these months doesn't make it feasible to make bait but in the past we've had some great april and may halibut fishing, if our salmon is cut short at least we could target halibut with some rockfish. thanks |

Hello Salmon seminar volunteers, fellow fishermen, and women. With all the latest news about Central Coast Salmon Enhancement Program, not receiving Salmon, this year for their program, and the very low counts in the delta. The rumor is they are going to close the season for sport and commercial fisherman. There is a meeting March 20th, set to discuss the situation, on April 24th, they are supposed tp decide what the season or restrictions will be. Keeping in mind up north, Fort Bragg, area their season opens Febuary 15th. Here is the good news, the Salmon seminar, is going to still happen for another great cause. Michele Rawley, for the last three years has been working on a non profit benefit program for kids. The name is KIDS ON THE OCEAN. Last year Michele, was able to raise enough money to provide 30 kids one free trip, and it turned out to be a great success. The trip started with Michele, and her deck hand the day before in the kids classroom, explaining about the ocean and the eviroment. Most importantly, conservation and respecting the ocean, boat edicate, safety procedures, fishing techniques and respect, not to take more than you need, no waste. Her trip starts out going down the bay and explaing about all the water front businesses, including the location of the coast guard, and harbor patrol, the kids get see the sport boat ramp, and for the first time in and out of the harbor mouth. Each trip cost $1,000.00 dollars and our goal is to raise enough for 3 trips this year. Michele, needs volunteers for each trip to help with the kids. If you would like to help Michele, her deckhand and a bunch of excited kids out, please feel free to contact us. (805)234-1866 I will be happy to add your name to our list. For all the Salmon, seminar volunteers, we still need you and appreciate your help. The price of dinner and free beer is $8.00 dollars per person. Speakers will be Harbor patrol, Fish & Game, Coast Guard. Raffle, slient actuion, and door prizes. One thing I realize looking back over the last two years volunteering and helping out with the seminar, is seeing all the people and friends getting together sharing their stories and excitement with each other has been a great reward. Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year and on the water soon. Best regards, Joseph & Tami Anderton BBQ P.S. There will also be time set aside for anyone with questions about catching Salmon, set up gear applications. |

Hey, the Polaris report reminded me that I fished and had a great dinner in Hawaii with Roger Hawtree. He is my neighbor there. His 361.9 lb yellowfin is #9 in the world. I got to see it on his office wall in Kohala Ranch. It was awesome. I was blown away by the size of the thing. Roger and his wife Jackie are super cool people. Will |

Look for winter halibut in 80+ feet of water. They do move out and that is the problem. As they do the area to search grows exponetially and to make it harder they are not schooled up like in the spring so just because you find one doesn't mean you found 'em. But they are there and it seems like the ones you do get are larger than summer average. |

FYI winter halibut. Those definitely seem to be a mystery around here...however folks in So Cal catch quite a few halibut in the winter/spring in shallow water. My guess is that they are still around, but just not as many and they hard hard to find/catch as they always are (plus no live bait). I'm curious if they do move off to the edge of the shelf like the Pacific halibut do! Not much fun fishing in 500' of water...but it might be interesting to try. good luck and post your results! best fishes, steve |
