Hi, I'm new to this forum. Can anyone please tell me the spots in sharjah where I can go fishing and really catch some really nice ones, I've been fishing here in sharjah but haven't got any luck ever since. My Dad came from canada for a vacation coz I told him that fishing here in UAE is awesome based on what I have seen on pics in the net. Thanks in advance, Norm |

By the way, I am using mostly braided lines. Braided lines are much stronger and casts further due to their smaller/thinner diameter thus weigh less compared to mono lines. Additionally, braided lines will require lighter weights as the thinner diameter is having less drag in strong currents. HOWEVER as most thinner lines can easily cut through flesh, protective gloves need to be used. Tying knots are much easier with braided lines compared to monos having the same strength rating. The down sides; EXTREMELY expensive (50lb/300yd, US made lines will be aroung=d AED160! Get entangled easily due to the soft (sewing thread softness) nature. Will "snap" if attacked by a fast moving predatory fish e.g Giant Trevally, Kobia, King Fish, Queen Fish etc if no shock leaders are being used. This is owing to the almoost 0% stretch. Any points of abbrassions will also become the weakest point. Best Regards! |

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am a far eastern expat currently on a job posting here in DXB. Very keen in fishing and slowly learning all the tricks and skills of the hobby. Just came back from a 2 week vacation in Brunei and git myself some gears as the choices of rods and reels are either quite limited or expensive compared to my home country. The lists of arsenals are as follows; rods (all 2pcs) - Shimano Jigwrex s605 (max 23kg), Eupro Turbo Jerk (max 20Kg), Pioneer Tackle Sea Conqueror (max 23kg). reels - Shimano Spheros 12000FA, Daiwa Opusbull 6000 and Okuma V65sa(will be arriving soon) Like mentioned before, good quality reels are either expensive or very limited here BUT the choices and prices of lures (rapala, storm, williamsons, yo-zuri etc) are fantastic here (DXB) compared to Brunei. Went out fishing in a boat last Friday morning with a few friends. Surprisingly caught a good size (about2.5kg) mackeral(king fish) on a bottom fishing method! Tried trolling without any success otherwise other catches are as a couple of sheris, a small hamour, a white travelly and surprisingly lots of sultan ibrahim! Highly appreciate if someone can give/pass me the best fishing spots in Dubai as well as UAE, to ensure all my gears are put to good use. Best Regards! |

So far, license is required only in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Do keep in mind though we are talking recreational fishing, not commercial fishing. Here is a link to Sharjah Tourism Website: http://www.sharjah-welcome.com/html/s_fishing.htm Thanks, Ijlal |

Hi Ijlal, Don't much about braid myself, but from what I have read on the net and seen on DVD's. Braid is actually very strong and doesn't snap very easily ..... if at all? Most people think they get broke off when actually the knot they have tied has come loose. Braid is very slick and so when tying a knot like a fishermans knot, instead of 4 or 5 twists you would normally do with mono you need 7 or 8 (or even more) with braid? Also braid has little or no memory at all so when you bring your line in and your hook has gone you can't see the tell tale wave in the line like you get with mono when your knot has come loose? Like I say I am no expert but just passing on what little I have learnt And for Kim ..... As far as I am aware you need a license to fish in all the UAE waters. The problem is where to get them? Dubai & Abu Dhabi are quite strict in certain places from what I have heard but the other places - Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Dibba and everywhere in between you don't get asked for a license. Again this is only what I have heard and can't say if it is 100% true. Tight Lines, Ian Harper (fishemirates) www.fishemirates.com http://fishemirates.freeforums.org If fishing was easy ..... you wouldn't enjoy it! |

Hello folks, Thank you for your warm welcome. If fishing license is required in Dubai, I would like to fish in other regions before I get the fishing license. But not so far... like Fujairah.. Could you guys tell me where to go in Sharjah or Umm Al-Qaiwain? I mean... exact spots there. |

Hello Rami, Well the "slightest jerk" was actually an exaggeration and used as a figure of speech only. No doubt braid is awesome stuff and I use it too for some applications. It does not, however, take as much punishment as does equal strength mono due to lack of stretch, and as you have very rightly stated, one compensates for this by a comparatively lower drag setting. Take care, Ijlal |

Hi Ijlal, I do disagree with you about braided lines, I dont ever remember having a braided line break off for me. They are great for distance and also, for boat fishing. on the surf rods, i use 30# and 40# with a multiple of 10# mono for 1oz of wieght i use, 5oz sinker = 50# shock leader. and for boat rods, i use 65# braid. so far the best braid I've used is PowerPro, they last for ever. even on my light tackle gear, I use 12# braid and I set the hook with all my might, never recalled a berak off. only to have in mind to set the drag properly with braid. Thanks Rami |

Well, yes, braid has no elasticity; while it helps in getting better hookups, it also breaks on the slightest jerk for the very same reason! |

hi guys, Time for another round of controversy . This post is only meant for the super jelous forum fishermen who are very knowledgable but dont want to share fishing knowledge . For example i asked one what is braid line . Answer pranab you dont even know how to throw a line , why you want to knw what is braid ? Its only for experienced pepople like us . He also claims he dont understand why people use mono and thick lines . This is the profile of one of the most experinced and respected fisherman . He dont want to tell that thinner line travels more distance , he dont want others to know it has less elasticty and it hooks up fish better . For these kind of anglers who loves to finger people with their vast knowledge few pics by a very humble fisherman whom i saw in action today morning at dubai waters from land . Hope he sends the pic as i have requested him . Let these bunch of stupid jelous fisherman after seeing the pics decide themselves about their own breed . And change their attitudes of coming out of their sky scraper egoes and mingle with new commers . I wish most of the fisherman here are as humble as this fisherman whom i met today in jumeriah 1 . I think this was required as there were no fish offlate and bad weather added to it . So now we have some idle fisherman to be active with this post . With regards PRANAB 0506789546 |

lol lol lol lol lol I really wish fishing out at sea was so easy :-) As a HARPER I play a delightful tune :-) not an annoying drone like some :-) Nice one Jess, oh and yes I do get commission from anybody who goes through my link and buys something (and they must buy someting, I get nothing just for a hit) :-) But just let me tell you something that you don't know .... www.fishemirates.com costs me $'s per month to maintain and it is all done in my free time at my own expense ..... so if I make a little bit of commission (to help cover my costs) for promoting a cheap fishing online shop where anybody who shops there saves 15 - 20% on what they would spend here in the UAE then so what. Hey you save money I cover my costs :-) its a win win situation for everybody. Or just go directly to the website by typing it in the address box then i get eff all. Oh yeah jess one more thing ..... go to any major website like www.sportsfishingmag.com and if you click on any of their links they make a fortune without you spending a dime!!!! So I make a few pennies whilst the big companies make a fortune ..... bet you still use their sites though don't you .... oh and everytime you revisit those sites from your ip address you still make them money .... Last year it was reported that a certain computer mogul BG made around 50 million dollars from weblink hits alone ..... scary or what?????? As an IT ... I thought you would have know that :-) It just goes to show that if you don't use a hook you won't catch fish .... bye bye for now :-) Tight Lines, Ian Harper (fishemirates) www.fishemirates.com http://fishemirates.freeforums.org And Remember ..... If at first you don't succeed ..... go to fishreports.net/dubai.html and you can catch big Jesses .....lol |

Hi Seoil Kim, Welcome to this forum. As Ijlal said you can find most of the guidelines in this forum. You have to scroll back, and keep reading. There are some locations in Dubai which i know of : under Maktoom bridge, al sheef, around Al Mamzar park (on both sides ie. Dubai & Sharjah)... Please try to obtain the License first, it’s free of charge but you have to furnish required documents. All the Best. Ronald |

Hello Kim, Welcome to the forum. Yes, you do need a fishing license to fish Dubai and Abu Dhabi waters, but do not require it in the other emirates. Details on how to apply for a Dubai license have been given on this forum many times before, please use the search function to find out. Thanks, Ijlal |

The noun 'fish' has two plurals: Fish and fishes. Fish is used to describe more than one fish generally, as in, "The water was full of fish," meaning there were many fish of one or different species (unspecified). You use fishes when you explicitly refer to diffent types of fish, e.g. "The kingfish and the grouper are two fishes popular in the United Arab Emirates." |

Everyone here is harping about something..... and now we have a HARPER. Good guys....keep it up. Pranab, generally the use of capital letters or Upper Case as it is called, indicates a strong voice or shouting or stressing what you mean to say. Anyway, as you said, English is not your language and am sure the guys who harp, cannot speak your language....... If you want to correct someone's language, just mail him or call him up if you have his number and not on the forum...... good manners..... from the other forum: Hello Everybody, Here you go ..... Dear ian , You misunderstood me . I was replying to tmmimi not to you . And i did answer ur one email that i got , hope u got it . Secondly i took ur name here just to tell that i avoid writing much hence although i visited your forum couple of time i did not wite any thing . In fact ask keyur and chua i mentioned i have been there . So i think there is a bit of confusion here . I always try to avoid controversy . And thats the only reason i write less these days . But i regularly visit your web site and do read it on a regular basis . I liked your forum specially about the way you segmented items there . So please nothing against you . And i was joking with ijlal about going under any ones stick . So dont take anything to your heart . My intention is never to hurt any one feelings . But i am also particular when some one try to be smart with their comments . This is the second time some one from abudhabi pointed me out that my english is poor . Last time i also wrote back to another angler i am not hailing from a rich family to get my education from oxford . And i dont care about my english . Because i am not english teacher i am an ameture fisher man . regards PRANAB |

Hey Pranab, I don't know where you get your stuff from sometimes buddy :-) I can't ever remember saying that Grammer should be perfect .... I am born and bred in England and therefore English is my mother tongue ..... I didn't ever declare that, as I know my grammer is terrible .... my wife who's mother tongue is russian has a better grasp of english grammer than I do :-) And by the way the other forum, as you call it, is just another forum and I am not in competition with this one ..... I just think that the UAE & Oman needed something different and I helped get it of the ground .... at sometime in the not so distant future I may move away and do you think it will all stop then ...... No I don't think so as the Mods will carry it on and I will hand the reigns over to someone who, like me just enjoys his fishing and chatting :-) Anyway if you don't want to join the other one aswell as this one then that's up to you mate. I will always check in here and give my reports, tips and advice as I still like this forum. Oh yes I need to ask you a question also ..... Do you get upset if people ignore you????? Well its a good job that I don't, as you have never responded to any of my emails I have sent you recently???? Take care buddy and I really hope we can get together one day soon and fish ..... as I keep catching in this forum but can't seem too out at sea :-) nudge nudge wink wink lol lol Oh yeah if you want to join the fishing club .... then please respond to the email I sent you .... I am sure you will make some really valuable contributions and help it become a reality rather than in everyones dreams :-) and remember if you caught fish everytime you went out Fishing .... it would be called catching :-) Don't be a stranger buddy, take the olive branch I am offering and lets make fishing in the UAE & Oman fun for everybody :-) Hope to speak to you soon. Thanks & Tight Lines, Ian Harper (fishemirates) www.fishemirates.com http://fishemirates.freeforums.org Remeber ..... If At First You Don't Succeed .... Go Fishing!!!!! |

Hi , Rami sorry mate , its one of my bad habbits using caps , in fact i remember in the past some one also pointed me out about this and i apologised to him also . But the second point about fish and fishes dont you think you can forgive me as a typing mistake . This is the reason i told ian when he asked me to join the new forum , i replied him that here anglers in uae not all are too intersted in grammer rather than fishing . As i appreciate your concern of use of cap letters being used please also see in future you talk about fishing rather than talking about english . Because i guess neither of our mother tounge is english . He he i was pulling your leg mate . Dont take it seriously . I really do enjoy how this forum heats up on trival issues. But as ijlal says the best part of this forum you can express what ever you feel like withut being under any ones stick he he. with regards Pranab |

Hi Everyone, Thanks Tayyab, even i read about the expected Sandstorm that may engulf Dubai on thursday evening. The warning says that "waves could reach up to 18 feet off the UAE coast". So please be careful and drive safe. Take care. Ronald |

Hello Biju, You can use a 7 to 10 feet rod that can cast 1/2 oz lures and be used with 12 to 20 lb line. A medium sized spinning reel capable of holding 150 - 200 yards of 0.35 mm dia line should be more than enough, though a good, smooth drag is a must. Load it with good quality 14 or 16 lb line and use a 30 lb mono or fluorocarbon leader about 15 feet long (shorter if you are using a 7-8 foot rod). Buy a couple of 10 cm Rapala X-Raps, preferably in the brighter colors, and you are ready to go. I prefer using a short wire trace between the leader and the lure as you also get barracudas with the same setup. Also be prepared for a lot of hard work. Spin a few times at a likely place and move on. Remember, underwater structure is the key to finding fish. Best of luck, Ijlal |

Hi Ijlal, Saw your last week posting. Nice catch. Can you please explain the tackle & technique used to catch groupers from the Corniche. This will help beginers like me. Cheers, Biju |
