Blackie...we have a nice looking week and weekend ahead, and I'm going to try to be on it as much as possible after work. May even throw the camper on the truck and stay at Refugio this weekend.
The grade of fish is slowly improving, approaching springtime slab season. It's all BSP with a few walleyes mixed in....the walleyes are in very shallow, shallow as I've ever seen....can you say "jackpole"!
Haven't seen any croaker or flatties yet...too cold.
Also....sandcrabs are starting to show in small pockets.
Been using the bloody sandworms, cut in thirds...why use anything else? The stuff is wicked good.
Using nothing greater than 6lb.
Let me know if you or any of the CenCal guys are coming down.

While my boat is in the shop up in Paso this is the only game in town...but it's a good one!

Despite the wind, which was pretty bad out of the southeast, the perch bit well in the 45 minutes I gave it at Refugio this morning. It just got windier and windier, and the sky got blacker and blacker, and by the time I left (really, it became just about impossible to fish) it was sustained at 25kts. Good thing the fish were tight and shallow. I got 8 or 9, all between 10" and 13"...best grade of fish i've seen this winter so far. The thirteener was a pig and fought hard. Brutal conditions, though.
But....the fish are there.
All fish came on the standard Carolina rigged GULP bloody sandworm, cut in thirds. That stuff is fish crack.

Hey Michele (or anyone else)
Have you seen the BassPro ad for there up comming sale, www.basspro.com/classic , they have a reel exchange program where you get a discount on a new reel when you turn in a used, working reel. Then they donate them to kids fishing programs ! They say they have donated over 40,000 reels to programs such as yours ! I'm sure if you get in touch with them you could get a bunch !!! Would be worth ckecking out ! I'll give you a call this afternoon, still need some "T's" and also have a bunch of "Pacific Coast Sportfishing" mags you might like.

I enjoyed reading about the custom rods being made, My brother John of JD's Big Game Fishing down in Newport makes these cool custom bamboo rods, the bamboo is shipped from India to Norway where they are horse glued up, then shipped to his shop where he shapes, sands, and finishes the rods, the boys down there use linnen line on their reels so that they can compete against the old records. what a sport. gene

Hello all fellow fisherman, volunteers, and donators.

Tami and I have been on the raod for the last week, during our trip. I have received many calls asking where donations can be made. Michele, and the Morro Bay Commercial Fishermans Organization, have a account opened at the old Midstate Bank, now Rabo Bank in Morro Bay. Please make your checks out to MBCFO. Kids AT SEA. You can leave cash donations at the bank or drop them of at Virge's Landing. If for some reason you cannot make it to either of these locations, contact Michele, or myself and we will make arrangements to pick them up. The response and community support has been so great everyone involed really apprciates it very much. Not to mention the kids who will benefit. Wait till you see last years pictures, the story is told through them.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the BBQ.

Best regards,
Joseph & Tami Anderton
BBQ.

PS. Niel Ferrell, of the Bay News, did a great artical in this weeks paper.

PSS. Cracka, has anyone donated a reel to Tom?
What a great Idea.

Hello Carl,

Good to hear from you. looks like the norhtern cal. guy's are finding out what it is like to reason with the other side. No one listened to Mel, and CCFCC. Wait till you see hear what's going with the southern cal. guy's. The president of United Anglers was all in with the enviro's, to seperate sport fishermen against commerical fisherman. The word is he was looking to create Marine Life Parks, that only sport fishermen would be able to fish in. Completely leaving out the commercial fisherman. The enviro's used him and the influence of United Anglers, to get the MLPA'S passed, boy was he caught off guard. Now they are headed his way. It will be interesting to see what happens. Word is he sold out and took their side to cut out the commerical guy's, and getting the Marine Life Parks, passed.
I wonder how many of his member's really wanted this division between sport and commercial. I was alway's told power in numbers. To conquer and divide the enemey is the sure way to win.

Best regards,
Joseph Anderton
BBQ.

Looking forward to seeing you at the fundraiser.
Best wishes for this fishing season.

Carl. Sorry to say the exact same scenario played out down here despite huge outpouring of info voiced from ther most experienced anglers. Waste. Northern Channel Isles/Ventura/SB counties took the first hit and the Feds just doubled the new zones. They came in with a pre-determined outcome. SoCal is next on the block. On a positive, check out the lunar esclipse.

#1: Jim g, yes of course you can donate a reel for the rod. As for acid vs. conventional: Acid wraps (previously know as a Roberts wrap) start with the first guide located on the top of the rod then spiral 180 degrees to the bottom. This is an old technique that casts great while allowing you to put a tremendous amount of pressure on the fish (simular to a spinning rod). Most people laugh when they see one and ask "what were you smoking when you had it wrapped?", but I gotta say they work great. Conventional is simply what you see off the shelf with all the guides on top. There are different methods of completing the acid wrap, and various wrappers rotate their guides differently. Tommy and I talk a lot and we both wrap ours differently, but one thing in common is they work great. I can throw a 1oz sinker over 60yds on a Calstar 765XL with a Daiwa 30 reel, yet still pull on it with 20lbs of drag! That said, the majority of my personal rods are conventional because I don't like having to explain it to everyone when I'm on a boat!

Thought I'd let you know folks up north at Coastside are getting bent over. Bob Franko and all took the approach of working with the BRTF and the envrios hoping logic, reason and science would drive the process up north. Like us they are now finding out the outcome was pre-determined before the meeting even started. The BRTF is blantly disregarding scientific data and is over stepping it's authority once again. Read Bob Franko's message on Coastside. Mel and Bob, I got to hand it to you, you saw this process for what it was, a GD CRIME!

When JR and I fished off von helm rock , there was a harbor seal we named PETE , he was blind in one eye and missing part of his front flipper , I think he waited till he saw the KILLER B,S out there and came out , he would always greet us then proceed to pick off the smaller lings we would hook , he liked them from 24 inches and smaller , we fought him several times for larger ones , he would tear them up then finally he would concede.
The small ones he did get off the hook he would surface , hold the ling by the head and rip the rest off the head and let it sink, he was good for about 4 before he would leave .
We always saw him , wonder what hes eating now , he would not eat a rockfish......
At the fishing club meeting yesterday there were some good perch reports , may have to give it a try tomorrow.
Blackie.

PS
Jim;
Conventional rods have all the guides on top , acid wrap is another name for the roberts wrap .

Paul, I couldn't get the link you posted to work, but I found 2 others:

http://nwr.nmfs.noaa.gov/Marine-Mammals/Seals-and-Sea-Lions/Deterring- Pinnipeds.cfm

http://nwr.nmfs.noaa.gov/Marine-Mammals/Seals-and-Sea-Lions/upload/Det er-Pinnipeds.pdf

I have personally never lost a salmon to a pinniped, but I know people who have, and I have lost rockfish to them. Last year I set the hook of my 7" swimbait on a solid bite, only to quickly discover that it was a medium-sized sea lion. I lost the swimbait, and the sea lion got some new jewelry.

The La Balandra Rotarians of La Paz are sponsoring a Dorado Tournament on April 6th. Proceeds will go to fund the Prosthetic/Orthotic clinic they have set up in La Paz. We volunteer to work at the clinic twice a year, and have had a total of four clinics so far, providing about 80 artificial legs and many orthopedic braces to patients living in Baja Sur. We gather used parts (from donated legs and braces) in the US and disassemble/remove usable parts. These used components are unable to be used in the USA due to liability concerns and health laws, but are perfectly good to use again. The Mexican government will only provide artificial limbs (prostheses) to citizens who have lost their limbs due to accidents, and since about 66% of patients lose their limbs due to various types of vascular disease (Diabetes mostly), these patients have to go without prosthetic systems. Dr. Alejandro Aguirre (a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician) is our contact in La Paz. He is a Rotarian and is the prime mover in the establishment and continued success of the clinic. At the last clinic, he reported that based upon his research, the BCS government through CREE had provided only 6 legs for the preceeding year, where the clinic had provided over 30 (all at no cost). I would encourage any and all who like to fish to consider attending the tournament. Also, for anyone living in the La Paz area I would like to invite by at our next clinic to either volunteer or see what we're accomplishing for "los pobres" down there. The clinic does not yet have a firm date, but is set for the latter part of April. More information will follow when available. Thanks for your consideration. Paul Boe

ALLRIGHT DAVE
My kind of report , BLOODY , great , I have already procured the first prize for the upcoming perch derby, just waiting for a good weekend to put this thing together,
.
This time of year the surf can be tricky and lots of undertow , they lost two folks to the north this weekend , not huge waves just suck your feet out from under you and drag you out, without a wet suit,or some kind of flotation, you would be lucky to get back to the beach.
Stay Safe and good job dave

How about a fish report for a change?
Fished yesterday at Jalama just past the high tide....in front of the store. Got 8 barred and walleye, all small. The wind turned on quickly, the swell was big, and the current was ripping down coast...it was tough. Only fished for an hour.
This morning I hit La Conchita and did well... at least 25 BSP in two hours from 7 to 9am...biggest was a 12". Left them biting.
All on Carolina rigged bloody Gulp sandworms.
Back at it tomorrow....have to drop my boat off for some TLC at Harold's.

I have, more than once!
I think they hold a grudge against me from the commercial days of long ago. Ha

Kids at Sea rod! Michele has chosen the colors and artwork, it's a secret and you have to be there to find out. Now here's a question for the potential buyers, acid wrapped or conventional? I'm leaning towards a Seeker LB704 10-25 blank. Whatcha thinks gang???

I came across this on a Baja Chat board:
For the past month my brother-in-law Gary Powell and I have had 24 of our underwater images on exhibit at the Museum of Natural History in Morro Bay. They will be there through March, maybe longer. On Saturday, February 23 at 1 pm Gary and I will give a presentation on the techniques we used to make the photos, including a PowerPoint slide show, and a display and discussion of our diving and camera equipment. I know it's not Baja, but it would sure be fun if any Nomads are in the neighborhood and could drop by and spend some time with us. As an added bonus, Nomads Paulina and Dern will be there and are looking forward to seeing any Nomads who can make it. The museum sits on a breathtaking site in the State Park, just south of the town. The talk should last about an hour, maybe a little more. No pressure, but if any of you can make it we would love to meet you in person.

In Carrie Wilsons column of this weeks "Western Outdoor News" she states that it's OK to use either paintball guns or slingshots to deter pinnipeds.
