Marty
we are fishing pico friday morn early, have you tried the san simeon beach , one of the guys in our club fly fishes also , and he does ok at S.S.
Just park in the lower lot and fish north , there used to be a pier that came out of the warehouse, the pilings were cut off low , but there is some good fishing from there north to the rocks.
we have caught a lot of macks in the harbor certain times of the year using a sabki rig with a bobber, usally the birds give the location away.

Hi Mike...Yeah, I was up at 5 to get there on time. Will do it again Manana, but will go to Cayucos for some friendlier fly fishing water...Pico was too gnarly.....So how do I find or attract Macks to the surface to get em on a flyrod? Also want to learn to throw a castnet for bait....Sounds like Steve Mcgill does that in the harbor....want to catch more halibut this year..Tell me more about this Mack fishery....In Mexico I get them real shallow...trolling rapalas and throwing Clousers...Do they come in to the harbor mouth near the rocks???? Since I have closed the kennel.....I have more time to fish...and thats why I closed...I'll soak up any info. Thanks you guys......... mj

Fished Haskell's for an hour yesterday evening with my youngest...beautiful and glassy, incoming tide. Told him I'd give him five bucks if he beat me to seven fish, and he did.
Not spectacular fishing, and no real biggies, but I did catch my first calico perch of the season...a fattie, too.
On another note...just got the bad news that Lake Casitas is now closed to all private boats....to protect against quagga mussel invasion. Hope it doesn't happen to Cachuma.

Thanks Blackie for the Pico Creek tip...Caught 6 Nice Barred Perch this morning..1 was as long as my forearm! Biggest Perch I've ever seen...The ocean looks great today.....When I fished near Michelle for Mackerel, we were very deep. Can you get these fish up on top? They would be fun on a light fly rod...

Yea you are right on about that realeasing the smolts , when I lived in the delta , the DFG used to dump them at the RIO Vista bridge, all us locals always had advance notice on the plant , so we were there that morning , the stripers also got the news , I have caught 30 fish in three hours of casting a hair raiser off the bank , always kept three big ones the rest was catch and release , I would be suprised if a third of the planted smolts made it downstream
and who says DFG uses any SCIENCE any anything they do , we know better.

Thanks Darby, I just sent an email to the NOAA folks about CCFCC's interest in exploring replacing the PSL weather buoy to save fishermen lives. We will hope to determine if there are some resonable funding options to preserve at least one weather buoy off our shores. I wonder how the wave machines will cohabitate with our precious sealions and sea otters. On the topic of a salmon closure because the return count was extremely small this year, has anyone told the fools at DFG that when they release the salmon smolts in the same spot at the same time of day the preditor striped bass and birds are there waiting for feeding time. Its f'n rediculous. A real feeding frenzie. Time to sign off before I really get worked up.

I jsut got a call from Ryan at NOAA saying that the private funding for the Pt.Arguello and West Santa Babara buoys will be cut off. (Not NOAA's fault.) He asked for feedback from the mainers, commercial fishermen, fishing clubs etc. that use them. Please forward to others you know and reply to his email Ryan.kittell@noaa.gov

Blackie, the park is beautiful now and uncrowded. There's no store there anymore, so bring what you need!
Also, no dump station for your tanks, either.
I haven't kept any perch in a long, long time...probably not since i was a kid growing up in San Francisco.
Going to try and fish tomorrow after work at Haskells....will report.
I'm glad the size of the fish is improving, and the surf seems full of them down here.
Everything else is pretty slow down here, but rockfish (not lings) just opened on the first. Windy on the outside, though....doesn't matter as the boat's in the shop anyway.
Take care....

rob, we use a 6 foot throw net with a 25' rope all round the bay. not sure why your reluctant other then you dont whant to spend the time. most of the time we have a full bait tank after around 8 throws(sometimes two)and the bait is killer. its a good filling when you aqiure your your own bait and go out and catch a few nice flattys. good luck.

you DID throw 4 back , just kidding , I know some were calicos , those are nice fish, I had a b---- of a time in the surf trying to beach them last week, dug out an old trout net see if I have more of a chance leaving them in deeper water and netting them , I love those 1 cast 1 fish days, those fish down there are decent size , we ate those I caught last week , they were sweet .
May see you down there soon, thinking about dragging the fifth wheel down and the yacs for a few days , stay in the park , shouldnt be to croweded now .
Keep on nailing them toads , gotta be a state record out there.

Perch are getting bigger down here as we get closer to Spring. Had a great weekend on BSP....many fish approached 13"....they were fat....and at the tops of the tide very aggressive and very shallow. Sand crabs are showing, too....Gaviota to Refugio area.
Sunday morning my first 16 casts had 14 fish landed.

John.
My deckhand and I meet with the group the day before the trip in their environment. We go over all of this. My crew is highly trained and drilled often. I have taken kids fishing often, besides being very excited, they are usually better behaved than adults. They do not run or jump or sit on the rails on my boat. We make sure of this. I also have a high rail with a safety wire in between the rail and the bullwarks. The life jackets that I carry have to be Coast Guard approved for commercial vessels, they are not comfy. Of course we always hope and pray that we have a safe trip, but I feel there is a way to be aware and cautious without being frozen with fear. This said, The kids will be introduced to all of the safety equipment and how to use it. They will NOT be running around in lifejackets with fire extinguishers or sitting in the life rafts "just in case".

Joe, Kids run, thats what they do...they goof around, that's what they do, they climb on stuff, that's what they do..but even with 2 or 3 to one supervision stuff happens...Have you ever taken 30 kids on a boat? I have many times, I had a trips two or three times a year until the San Mateo..that ended that...I completly agree with you on your rights but kids need to wear jackets..If they go over you will have a chance to get them back...they need to know how to put them on and wear them...There are jackets that are quite user freindly these days and the extra protection for this valuable cargo is worth it...this a great project for the future..I applaud your efforts...

BBQ

Sorry for hanging up on you so fast. My son bit one of our guests kids....I had to hand out a spanking.....I know that spanking is not the answere, but when I was a kid I bit another kid, dad whipped my ass and I havent bit anyone since...Maybe it does work...

The product I was trying to tell you about is called "spider thread" it is simular to a spider web... While back trolling, we would take the meat from a craw dad, attach it to a chrome/orange or green kwikfish. It usually gave great results. However that was a very small section of river that I used to fish..(the Barge hole near Redding Ca)..God only knows how it would work anywhere else.....I think that the craw dad smell/flavor got the salmon in the attack mode... Just a thought, hope you can make some use of it...

Green Wave Energy,
Ocean wave machines that produce electricity.

Try to Google Green Wave Energy. The reading is intertesting. The Harbor Advisory committee is going to have a public response meeting. Time and date to be posted. These people are coming in from the federal goverment side with out any concern for the local fishing and sport fishing community. The area they are proposiong is going from shore out to 240 feet. South jetty around point Buchon.
This is some of our prime Salmon, fishing grounds and not to mention Halibut, pounce ball area.

Best regards,

MLPA Blue Ribbon Task Force San Diego. Well folks, if you don't believe money talks, just look at who's on the task force. Former Mayor of SD, Westrec Marina Manager, etc. Think any of these people have a vested interest in keeping as large an area as possible open? Hell they should have apponted Bill Poole and Frank LoPreste! Anyone want to bet their closures are miniscule in comparison to ours? The following is right off the MLPA website:
Blue Ribbon Task Force San Diego Members:
Susan Golding, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Golding Group and Former Mayor of San Diego
William W. Anderson, President of Westrec Marina Management, Inc.
Don Benninghoven, retired as executive director of the League of California Cities and later of the City-County-School Partnership

Hello John, Teachers Pet,

I'm one of the people you are talking about, who choose not to wear a PFD. every and all the time I'm on the water.
You have a great point and thank you, for your opinion.
But no thank you, to not leaving the choice up to the individual to make for themselves.
I would really hate to see my freedom of choice taken away and some rule made saying I could not operate our boat unless we wear life jacket's.
I would be getting tickets on really calm day's for taking the thing off, not to mention the the few hot day's we have every year.
I feel there is a time and place for everything, and if you need to wear a life jacket because ocean conditions require it, you should be heading into port.

Best regards,
Joseph Anderton

Hello Blackie,

Check out last weeks Bay New, volume 19 Issue 8 February 21st to 27th, it is on the cover.
I heard about this a couple of weeks ago and the area is huge, the power lines will run underground on the sea floor bottom and the gernerators will lay on the sea surface.
On the web look for Tolusa Press.
The artical say's the application will use 17 square miles of ocean and 7 miles from the south jetty to Point Buchon. The impact on us as fishermen & women is, we will not beable to fish within the area required for the wave generators. =(

Best regards,
Joseph Anderton

Michele, Of course you have a well maintained coast guard approved vessel..I was not suggesting you didn't...Pfd's are the most important component of being on the water and I was suggesting a way to be sure that component of the teaching is covered...there is a difference between having a PFD on a boat (any boat) and wearing it...there are still many fisherpersons out there that don't wear a lifejacket while they're fishing..that is the point I am making..It might be something you want to add to your program...Sorry if you thought anything different....

Check out the bottom of the 3rd paragraph where it says a claim was filed off of San Luis Obispo. We were given a map at the last Harbor Advisory Board Meeting that showed the area. If you get channel 20 try to catch a rerun before next Thurs. I don't remember if the map went on the projector or not, but there was some talk of green wave.

Blackie,

There is very little info avail. on green wave energy right now. I don't know what info. Joe has, but check out the link below. I think if this happens, we will definately lose the area Joe referred to. This will not only be installed underground like they say, it will take out south jetty to where buchon MPA is and out to 240 feet at least. Here is a start, this page has references to other companies that you can google and try to figure out what is going on. Yikes!

Hello Bob Hather and Mel,

Have you looked into the new wave generating plant they are proposing to install just outside of Morro Bay? It sounds like the hole sand spit from the south jetty to point buchon will be off limits to fishing and boating.

Best regards,

I went out with a friend on Thursday for sturgeon. We went out of Martinez on the "Happy Hooker" with a total of 12 people fishing. Entire boat only caught 1 shaker sturgeon, my buddy caught two short stripers, and one guy caught and kept a small flounder. Cost of license with delta stamp: $44.00, cost of boat trip: $80.00, finally being able to spend a full day on the water: PRICELESS!

Hello Kids At Sea,

Mission Statement. our goal is to provide and inspire today's youth, with knowledge and practical ocean fishing experience. Providing the real opportunity to experinece what it is like to be on the ocean, first hand catching, cleaning, and eating the fish they catch, not only in our port but all ports at sea. Respecting the natural enviroment and all elements involed. Providing first hand knowledge, experience and understanding of the local water front businesses. Looking back when they become Senators, Congressman & women future Presidents, Biologist, Eviromentalist. Always being able to reflect back upon the first hand experience provided to them through programs like Kids At Sea. Hopefully they will remember the experience provided to them from people like Michele Rawley, 3rd generation sport fishing captian, and mother of Amanda Rawley. Carrying on the tradition of her great grandmother Rita, grandmother Sharon Rawley, and grandfather John Rawley, combining all of the generations of experience and knowlege together is beyound my counting. The opportunity to use this experience and the willingness to share it with our future generations is a great gift providing our Kids At Sea, with a life experience that can only be shared by the people that have lived the life of the sea for generations.

Best regards,
Joseph Anderton
