XII Cabo Frio Marlin Invitational- Brazil This tournament, was supposed to be held in the 5th and the 7th of February 2005. But due to terrible weather conditions were held in the 7th and 8th. We arrived there in the Monday 2nd, and in the next day had a marlin double at noon. In the 80lb starboard flat line we had a 360 pounder, and in the port flat line a huge one. I calculate it over 800 pounds. The fishes did not facilitate. The smaller one, run to the port side, and the big one to the boat’s starboard. Both fishes started to run on opposite directions and in few seconds our reels were almost empty. I gave priority to run the boat slightly in 45 degrees in the direction of the bigger fish. After forty minutes, we were luck to correct the fish’s positions, and landed the 360 pounder easily. The photo shows how happy we were. My friend in the chair, Mr. Eduardo Picolo was with the 80 lb rod. I was using a stand up gear with my 50lb tackle, and an 800 pounds fish. As was not a tournament, I gave my tackle to Mr. Picolo, and he fought the fish until 8.30 pm. We tagged and released the fish and just arrived back at Cabo Frio, around 12 pm. Next days the sea rose, and the Thursday the 5th run was cancelled. We tried in the Friday and after two hours in a fierce sea, we came back. In the Saturday run we caught a 500 pounder and finished in the 5th place. In the Sunday we had one but lost it. In the two days tournament we finished in the 8th. Not bad, considering that the best 31 fishing machines of Brazil, were there. Compared with other previous years the results were disappointing. In the tournament we only caught 21 Blues and has only 34 strikes. But was fun.

As most boats have finished the season after the Cabo Frio Tournament and stored away the billfish tackle a few boats are still going out and finding good numbers of blue marlin. Fishing 55-65 miles South of Rio de Janeiro the boats have been raising 1-3 fish/day averaging 300-400Lbs. One fish estimated at 800 pounds has been reported lost.

I was interested in getting some information on Tuna fishing off of Cabo Frio. Basically I'm interested as too if you catch any Bluefin, Yellowfin and/or Big Eye Tuna. Please advise on the best time of year and relative locations. I have friends down there and would be interested to fish for Tuna while I'm down there.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Swordfish in Rio
Swordfish In Rio Those are the only Sword fish ever caught in Rio de Janeiro by sportfisheman. The 258 pounds one, was caught by the crew of a 45' Sportfisherman named "Zacoca" skippered by Capt. Zaimir. The crew in the photo is Mate Paulo Cecchetti, Marcos Coelho and Bertholino Loewen. It was caught at 52 miles off Rio de Janeiro at a relative small depth of 450 feet. Capt. Zaimir was fishing with a 200 pound spiderwire, with 5 Owner Mutu Light # 5 hooks aiming at black groupers, and sea perches. He thinks that the sword swallowed a fish already hooked, and by sheer luck the small circle hook, got stuck in its own month. When the fish started to fight, he got tangled in the other 4 hooks. The smaller ones of 50 and 70 pounds were caught by Eduardo (Dudu) Baumeier at a depth of 1350 in the boat "Isabel". Kdu Magalhães IGFA Certified Captain Holder of 29 IGFA World records. |
