Subject: Salmon by the Score and More

OVERVIEW: Reports of good to excellent salmon fishing are coming in all over. At Moore Bay (east of Port Hardy) a 48-pound Chinook topped everyone. In Blackfish Sound, boats from Farewell Harbour picked up 32-, 28- and 25-pounders over the weekend.

Campbell River continues to be very consistent. Chinooks are averaging 18 pounds with some to 30. Popular spot is the lighthouse at 180 feet, the hump at 170 feet and the shipping lane at 200-300 feet. Guided trips are averaging 6 strikes per 4-hour session.

CHINOOK SALMON – Go deep, deep deep and slow troll an anchovy or cut plug herring.

COHO SALMON – None yet.

HALIBUT – Nobody who we know is looking.

OTHER BOTTOM FISH – Ling cod continues excellent for those who want to fill a freezer.

CUTTHROAT TROUT – Hardly anybody trying, but the mouths of creeks look promising. Paul Weaver of Farewell Harbour recommends muddlers.

RAINBOW TROUT – Mile High Fly-Fishers at Raven Lodge reports that seven previously unfished lakes in Strathcona Provincial Park will open for the first time on Sat. (6/22) All the trails to the lakes are cleared. Fishing will be via pontoon and belly boats. Estimates are that the rainbows will range from 16-25 inches and weigh to 6-pounds.

WHALE WATCHING – A consistent stream of killer whales is putting on a nature display. You might not see one for 8-10 hours, then a dozen will show.

OTHER WILDLIFE – Tides have been extreme and when they’re low, the beaches are crawling with black bears looking for crabs, oysters, clams and rock fish in the shallows. Bald eagles are everywhere.

For additional information on fishing, weather or whale watching, call Farewell Harbour Resort directly at (250) 974-8105 from 3 to 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

Subject: Great North Fishing Charters

Hi there,

The fishing season is approaching fast. Salmon start to arrive here in late May.

For those who can't wait for salmon fishing, you can catch halibut. Great North Fishing Charters hooked into lots of halibut this month. Also transient whales have been spotted in Port Hardy last week suggesting feed is here.

Right now until March 31 we have special off season rates for our halibut fishing charters.

4 hrs for $240.00 Cdn
8 hrs for $520.00 Cdn
2 days for $950.00 Cdn
(Based on two people)

Call us at 1-250-949-8306 or email baileys@island.net to reserve a time. Don't miss out on a great fishing experience.
