A few Springs have been getting caught in the Gulf islands with them moved inshore to Thrasher Rock and the Grande with a 30lb Halibut getting caught at Thrasher rock trolling the bottom. On this side of the Straight of Georgia, Howe sound there’s still a few Springs getting caught at Hole in the Wall and Grace islands. The West Van shoreline in English Bay has started to produce a few Spring salmon and some Coho also. The tides get better for fishing the West van shoreline next week with a good flood in the morning which is the tide we want to fish as the fish get pushed to the Capilano river you don’t want to fish this area when the tide is ebbing. Crabbing is still been very good with lots of big dungeness crab around 7 inches across the back. It usually is slow the first 2 or 3 weeks of June then the West van area usually heats up as long as it does not rain much and Salmon rock and Howe sound pick up for Springs heading to the Squamish river.

Another great day on the water today sunny warm and calm. The North West was supposed to come up but didn't. The weather change to warm weather might have made the Spring salmon go off the bite the last few days; although there still were some nice salmon caught. Grace which is of the south west side of Gambier has produced a few nice fish with the biggest one I know weighing 23lbs. The far side of the Strait of Georgia, of Thrasher Rock and Five fingers off Nanaimo slowed down a bit from the torrid pace it had last week but still good numbers hopefully the fish move inshore more, near some structure where it's easier to pinpoint them and when they do move in there the Spring salmon fishing will be good till the end of July if not longer. With the weather looking like it's going to be sunny and warm for the next week the fishing should heat back up again. Until next time cheers Mark. Call (604)816-8944 if you have any questions or want to book a Father's day fishing trip.

Downtown Vancouver Fishing Report

April 1, 2006

Vancouver Report:

Our Spring time fishery is just around the corner with a few reports of larger Chinook being taken off the South side of Bowen Island in the "Hump" area of Georgia Strait. This area in April brings lots of "feeders" in as the chase the large amounts of Herring that are in the area. Over the next week or so we will be traveling to this area. For now we are fishing the North Arm of the Fraser area with some very good catches of 8 to 12 pound Chinook. On average over the past week we have played 5 or 6 per trip and 3 or 4 in that 10 pound range. Seals again are a problem as yesterday (March 31) saw a double header of legal fish both being taken by seals ... that was fun ! Flamin Hans, Cop Car, Green and White Glow have all worked very well with flasher. Not so much luck with no flasher as our water clarity has dropped. Herring and Anchovy will start taking over from the spoons very soon. Depths that worked best were 80 to 100 feet. Morning seemed to be better than afternoons this past week regardless of the tide.

Our weather has been not too bad with a few showers but as you travel West out of the city the sun shines more times than not. As we travel to the mid Strait area the weather should be quite nice. Good luck and tight lines.

Downtown Vancouver Fishing Report

February 1, 2006

Vancouver Report:

We haven't had many opportunities over the past week as the weather has kept us off of the water. Prior to that our Vancouver harbour has been very good with lots of action with many undersized fish (less than 24.5") and a shot or two at legal fish in the 10 pound range. Our local population of harbour Seals have been very active with about 2 to 4 hits per outing. They are very bold staying within 30 feet of the boat and waiting for any opportunities. Lures of choice for us has been pretty well any spoon trolled within 20 feet of the bottom. I have experimented with flasher no flasher combinations and with no flasher has been the hands down winner. Depths that have produced the best have been 90 to 115 feet around the QB area and 80 to 95 feet in the freighters.

Have not had any reports from the West side of Bowen Island including Hutt Island, Tunstall Bay, 3rd marker etc. for the past 2 weeks. Early January had this area producing very well for larger fish and not many undersized fish.

It looks as if the current weather pattern will change this up coming weekend giving us nicer days and possibly sunshine. Good luck and tight lines.

Vancouver Report: March 1, 2005

We have been targeting Winter Chinook/King salmon in the QB to Point Grey Bell Bouy area of Vancouver for the past few weeks with some decent success. Most days we see lots (30 or more) of undersize fish (less than 24") but more often than not we are now seeing legal fish in the 8 to 15 pound size range. Winter Chinook are bright chrome and fight like our summer run fish.

We have been finding some herring in the 3.5" size in some of the fish in the past 2 weeks so it would be worth a try to use herring or anchovy. Our most productive lure has been 3" Gypsy and Cop Car spoons with plastic lures coming in a close second. Depths in English Bay have been 50 to 110 feet with success on many days at the 50 foot range.

The West side of Bowen Island has had some excellent days in the past 2 weeks with the largest being 33 pounds caught by Sonny Nelson (local avid fisherman) and a 30 caught by another local guide. There were a few days where there were over 6 legal fish on the hook in a 3 hour period. The tides didn't really seem to matter but your gear had to be within 10 feet of the bottom. Flasher and no flasher were equal. Bait and spoons were equal.

Over the next month we will see our early Spring runs start to show and the fishing should really pickup. Winter fishing is normally slower than the Spring to Fall run but we have had many good days. So if you don't mind the cold damp weather give it a try - we supply rain gear on all boats.

Our updates will come on the 15th of every month so stay tuned. Good luck and tight lines !!

Spring is just around the corner and with it will be the start of some excellent fishing. Recent trips have yielded some undersized chinooks. This is the start of an excellent crabbing season. On most trips we set the traps on the way out and return to a feast of Dungeness crabs in their prime. This crab bounty will last until at least the first of July. Stay tuned to www.oceanadventurecenter.com for upcoming special trips, and further fish reports

Welcome to a new year of Sportfishing in Vancouver

Well Winter has definitely arrived on the South Coast. Wind, rain and cool temps await you while looking for those feisty Winter Chinook's. English Bay has been the choice for the past week and a half with a few nice 7 to 9 pound fish taken. Heard one report from the West Vancouver shoreline of an 18 pound Chromer taken. Still seeing a good number of under sized Chinook (less than 24.5") to play with. Bait is the choice for Winter fishing but army truck spoons have also worked OK. Depths again is very close to the bottom - within 10 feet if you can do it.

Vancouver Area Fishing Report

February 11, 2002

We have been fishing the Point Grey Bell area for the past 2 weeks and have done OK. The under sized Chinook (3-5 pounds) are numerous but legal fish are few and far between. The Harbour Seals have mostly gone away so the Seal incidents are much lower than last month. The West side Bowen and Hutt Island reports have been very good with a good number of legal fish taken. The depths are between 100' and 10 feet from the bottom. Spoons and bait are the best producers. Make sure you have a heater on board as this makes the adventure much more enjoyable. Give us a call for the latest information.

Wet wet wet wetcoast Yes its winter and todays forcast is wet. We tend to stay tied to the dock more offen than fishing at this time of the year. Hard to convince clients to go out in the rain. I don't no what the complaint is ? the guide is the one out in the rain the last set of anglers sat inside the cozy warm saloon or in the doorway while the guide set-up the gear! We only had three strikes and two were removed from the line by seals. The big Guy in the group affectionally known as jumbo played the seals both times thinkink this was the mother of all salmon! Guess again. No ammo for the sling shot so they tried prawn bait pellets to beam the seal but its too light so he followed us till the next fish was on. A couple of boats were into immature chinook schools and a couple keepers being taken. We are off to fish in Cabo next week.[maybe we'll dry out] Thanks to those who have contacted us at oceanadventure.com we love to hear the stories. Hope to see you at our display booth at the Calgary AB Boat and Sportsman show on the weekend of Feb.14-17 @Round Up Centre, Stampede Park. Or @ Agricom, Northlands Park Edmonton on March 13-17 Drop by and say hi, especially you other Pure Fishing Ambassadors

A few winter feeder springs have been taken in the Jericho area, in amongst the freighters - mostly undersize. Trolling spoons and large anchovies without a flasher will give you the best results. The crab traps are starting to fill, but again, not many keepers. A mild winter has given anglers lots of opportunity to get out on the water.

The Delphinus is out today, the rain has held off and the rollers are making the waters a challenge to fish. Remeber to take anti-nausea meds well in advance. At this time of the year its not uncommon for the ocean to have a low swell. We have had good results fishing close to the lions gate bridge in front of the river mouth. Nice size coho around six pounds. About 50% wild which must be released this year. with the abundance of coho we witnessed in the strait this season lets hope we get an opening outside the vancouver harbour next summer! A few large chinooks are being boated in the 20 to 30# range. The rivers are full of fish right now as they make way to the spawning beds. The chum salmon should start showing in large numbers as the fall progresses. Great fighting fish around 15#s and perfect for smoking.

The large chinook salmon we had hoped to see haven't shown up in the numbers we expected. We are still boating large fish while getting into schools of pink salmon. We have had great success with ling cod in the gulf islands. On one trip we had two lings +15#s at the swim grid chasing the small rock cod on our line. As sept. ends we hope to see a run of tyee then we should have the chum salmon schools show up for fall.

Its August and this is prime time for sockeye and the big chinooks. The first of the sockeye runs have moved in to the Vancouver harbour area and the fishing is nothing but excitement - double and triple headers - big beautiful fish. Its also the time that the big chinooks are showing up - they like those pink sockeye lures too! Preston Steele - captain

Fishing (and catching) is holding up to the promise of the early season results. On two recent 3 day Gulf Island getaways, our guests were boating up to 30 fish per day. Many of these were coho or silvers, which cannot be retained outside of Vancouver harbour, but the excitement of double and triple headers and nonstop action more than compensate for catch and release policies. The chinook or king fishing has been consistently excellent off Gabriola Island, almost entirely on artificial lures.Great fishing paired with great weather - B.C. is the place to be.

SEASTAR CHARTERS - located in the heart of downtown Vancouver at the Westin Bayshore Hotel.
This season is already shaping up to be one of the best in recent years. There's lots of action for Chinook or kings, trolling with anchovies or miniArmy truck hoochies off of Bowen Island. Some of these big boys are already reaching 20+ pounds, but there are a lot of 12 - 15 pounders with plenty of fight in them. We're also seeing large numbers of coho within 15 - 20 minutes from the dock. Come fish from the comfort of our 38 foot Uniflite sportfisher, or rocket out to the open waters on our 25 foot Grady White. Either way, book soon - we have a few dates only left in June, and the summer is filling fast.

Vancouver Area Fishing Report

June 4, 2001

We are fishing 30 minutes from the dock on most days. For the past few week's we have been fishing near the "QA" marker for King Salmon. The largest KING to date was 22 pounds that went to a group from Holland - which I'm sure had a grrreat time ! These fish should reach upwards of 25 to 30 pounds over the next 2 or 3 weeks. Lots of Coho or Silver salmon are being caught but they are only 3 or so pounds ... wait another couple of weeks. By the end of this run we will be into our Summer run of Silver, King and some early Sockeye salmon.

You can view some of our catches from the past few weeks by going to our Photo Gallery

Bait, (anchovies, herring - 5") are your best bet but any type of spoon trailed behind the boat will also produce. The hot lure for that past week has been the coyote spoon (green and white - 4") at 110 feet but coming in a close second is herring at 120 feet.

Vancouver Area Fishing Report

The week of June 12, 2000

Vancouver Area

Our Spring Chinook/King salmon fishing is steadily getting better but we have been unable to get to the fishing grounds due to unseasonable wind and rain. We hope this pattern changes very soon. We are seeing some really nice King salmon weighing in up to 30 pounds in the Strait of Georgia as an early run of Fraser River Chinook continue to make their way down the inner coast to our waters. We are open for retention of Coho salmon that are larger than 30cm's in the Vancouver area the limit is 2 per person per day. Give us a call for more info.

We are fishing 15 - 40 minutes from our dock in mostly protected waters. The weather is going to change in the next week or so and the temp is up to 60-70 F. Sun comes up at 5:30am and sets at 9:30 pm. The days are getting longer.

Bait (Anchovy, Herring) is still the number one choice but hootchies in Blood & Bones, white, glow or army truck finish will also produce some good fish. Fishing Report for December 1, 2003

SALTWATER

Sooke – Salmon fishing was GOOD when the weather cooperated this past week. Most of the anglers were catching winter springs in the 12 to 15 lb range. There were complaints about getting lots of “shakers though. The Sooke Bluffs was the best spot to fish, but Secretary Island was also productive. Fishing close to the bottom in over 100 feet was the rule. Anglers were catching salmon on all types of gear. Anchovies were productive, as always, especially in Glow White or Glow Green teaser heads. If you want to troll hootchies, try the Mint Tulip or Army Truck. Spoons were also working well, especially those with Glow White/Green. Some we would recommend are the #4 Coyotes or #5 Gibbs Gators in Glow White/Green or the Tomic #632 Roadrunner.

Becher Bay - Salmon fishing was PRETTY GOOD in East Sooke. Winter springs are now well inside the bay, so anglers don’t have to venture too far out if the weather blows up. The Bedford Islands were also very good. Most anglers start trolling in the bay and then head towards the Bedfords then towards Church Rock and then back. The winter springs were ranging from 7– 13 lbs in size and have been in the 95 to 140 foot depths. Anchovy remains the most popular bait for the springs, especially when fished in the White Glow Anchovy Specials. If you want to troll artificial baits, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons, and for plastics, Mint Tulip and Army Truck hootchies have been working really well.

Pedder Bay – The fishing this past week was EXCELLENT. The marina reports “tons of fish” and “nobody is getting skunked”. It was good by Church Rock and Whirl Bay, when the weather permitted, however the fishing in the bay near the can buoy was so good that most anglers never ventured that far. The springs there were running up to 15 1/2 lbs in size and could be found close to the bottom at around 125 feet. As usual, anchovies caught salmon, especially when fished in Glow White anchovy Specials. However, we heard that the anglers fishing squirts were getting just as much action. Good squirts/hootchies to use were the Mint Tulip, Army Truck, Jellyfish and Purple Haze. If you want to troll spoons, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons.

.
HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOW over the week. Bad weather and big tides stopped anybody from trying for halibut. Extra Large Herring fished off of a spreader bar with a 2 lb weight is the best bet to catch the big flatfish although some anglers have been doing well on jigs such as the Mudraker or Lucky Jig.

Victoria Waterfront – No change from last week as salmon fishing was GOOD off of the waterfront. Anglers reported winter springs up to the mid teens being taken over the weekend. The fish are still being caught deep, at least 110 feet, and are close to the bottom. You can’t go too wrong fishing the 20-fathom ledge all the way from Esquimalt to Trial Island. Brotchie Ledge and Clover Point have been the best spots though. You just have to put in some time until you run into a school of salmon. The salmon haven’t been too selective either, biting on bait, hootchies, and spoons. Anchovy is usually the most productive bait though, especially in Glow teaser heads. If you want to troll artificial baits, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons, and for plastics, use the Mint Tulip, Purple Haze or Army Truck patterns. Constance Bank was especially good for salmon on Sunday, with bigger fish being caught there. Most of the springs on the bank were in the teens.

HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOW. Big tides and bad weather were the problem. Most successful anglers in the coming week will be fishing in 200 to 280 foot depths with either Octopus or Extra Large Herring fished off of a spreader bar. Mudraker or Lucky Jigs also work well on the bank.

Oak Bay – Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week. The flats are starting to come on strong for winter springs running into the teens. Fishing close to the bottom in 100 to 150 feet with squirts has been the ticket to success. The best patterns have been glow in the dark ones, such as the Army Truck. The Mint Tulip and Jellyfish will also work. Small anchovy and Tiny Strip have been the most productive natural baits, especially in Glow White teaser heads. If you want to troll spoons, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons. Troll about 10-20 feet off of the bottom for best results.

HALIBUT – Fishing was POOR this past week. The most successful setup for halibut is Extra Large Herring fished off of a spreader bar with a 2 lb weight. Octopus tentacles and/or Power Bait also work well on halibut.

Sidney – Fishing was FAIR this past week. Anglers reported catching some winter springs from 8 to 10 lbs in the Sidney Channel. It has slowed down a little neat the Powder Wharf and Sidney Island. Fish deep with Tiny Strip in Glow teaser heads or Glow White/Green Coyote or Gypsy spoons for best results.

FRESHWATER

Cowichan River – Fishing was EXCELLENT. The coho return has been good and the coho have been biting well on Gibbs “Koho” spoons and Popsicle flies. Most anglers fishing for coho have been fishing the lower end from the Riverbottom section downstream to Duncan. The opening for retention of coho is no longer in effect so they must be released now.

The top end has been especially good for trout anglers. There are lots of salmon in the river and the trout are actively feeding on their eggs. If you are a fly angler, you should be using salmon egg patterns for rainbows and browns. The best technique is to fish just below a spawning pair of salmon with an egg fly. The trout hang just downstream from the fish and are feeding on salmon eggs that drift down from the spawners. All stretches of the river are holding fish, so take your pick on where to fish. Also, we expect that early returning steelhead should be heading into the river soon.

Local Lakes – Trout fishing is still GOOD in the local lakes, even though the water temperatures are dropping. Fly anglers can stay with the old reliable Black Leeches, Wooly Buggers and Damselfly nymphs trolled near the bottom and expect good action. Elk Lake continues to produce the biggest trout on average and 2106 catchables were recently stocked in the lake. Other recent stockings were 371 catchables in Langford Lake, 382 catchables in Prospect Lake and 1250 catchables in Glen Lake. At Elk Lake, shore anglers fishing Rainbow or Chartreuse Powerbait Nuggets have also been catching some nice trout off of the fishing pier and over by the highway. Langford Lake similarly is also producing nice sized trout. In Prospect Lake, Thetis Lake and Durrance Lake the trout have been smaller (10 to 14 inches) but have been producing more frequent action. Small spoons, Flatfish, or Kwikfish in frog patterns, are a good choice for trolling. Gang trolls and worms will almost always work if fished at the right depth too.

Bass Fishing has been SLOW. Most of the bass have now moved to deeper, warmer water for the winter. Fish large 4” tubes jigs, lizards, or jigs with pork rind, and try for suspended fish in deep water. Elk and St Mary’s Lake are your best bets for smallmouth bass now.

FISH TIP OF THE WEEK

Protect your rod tip. Many salmon anglers place a large bead on their line before tying on a terminal swivel. The bead prevents the angler from reeling the swivel into the rod tip’s eye and breaking it. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
