Kudos Michele and a big thanks to the generosity of all (special kudos for Will Bateman who cleaned house on the auction items!). It was a long and hard day (week, month, whatever) of work for lots and Tami, Mike, Bill and the rest who I don't remember all your names, not to mention John and Sharon. Everyone put a lot of hard work into this and hopefully they all had as much fun as I did! I really enjoyed putting a face to some of the names out there. Mike, get them ribs fixed up, long fin are commin!

Next year I am bringing a pocket full of money...Some of the auction items were a steal of a deal...

My hat is off for all who donated their time and products..

Congradulations Michele, sounds like you met your goal.

Thanks for the support for Kids at Sea. Bob Hather presented a check from Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition for 3,000.00! We raised enough $$ for 8 trips, but we also picked up some sponsors for more trips including Virg's Landing. This gets us off to a great start, I will still be chasing grant money with the help of others as well as possibly doing a fundraiser in the valley next year. I'll keep you posted.

Michele, you pulled off a very successful fundraiser for your Kids at Sea program this evening. Fun was had by all and the information from the speakers was well done. Your tireless efforts will help hundreds of our kids learn the value of protecting our fishing resource and culture that is so threatened today. We look forward to next year's event.

Actually, the fish with net marks on the Smith River received them way offshore, I am assuming by driftnets set by Asian and possible Russian boats. I would like to know more about this. I have seen Indian netting at the mouth of the Trinity River at Witchepec, but as far as I know they do not go out in boats into international waters. Anybody have any more info?

That wasn't "us" who wrote that article, it was a journalist, I don't know what he has heard as to who's fault the salmon situation is. It is very possible that opinions are different elsewhere.

Word from Joe (BBQ). Joe just called me from So. Calif. Due to his critical family illness he will not be there tomorrow night, his family asked him to say and he's where he should be at this time. I know how excited Joe was about this event (I think it was right next to the salmon opener), but it looks like he can't make either this year. Please keep Joe's family in your thoughts and prayers and let's make the event a tremendous success just to show how much we do care. This is the start of a critical venture for Michele, it will have an impact on the fishing future for generations to come. Please show, enjoy a great meal and open your wallets (how bout you try to spend what fuel would have cost on opening day?).

i found an interesting article about farmed salmon and how sea lice from these farm fish are decimating wild salmon fry. apparently the affected salmon have been in declining populations for 4 years and scientist expect a 99% collapse in another four years. while this problem seems to be a canadian issue, it makes you wonder how viable farming fish is.

Fair question Capt Dave, if we aren't the cause, why shut us down?

I guess it comes down to whether or not you believe in the numbers they set for sustaining the fishery. They're saying the returning numbers were so low last year the whole fishery could collapse, so every last salmon has to be let alone to reproduce, or we're looking at the extinction of Sacramento salmon.

Of course by that logic, sea lions should be thinned out too, and the article Michele posted is right on about that.

Pierre, if indeed we aren`t to blame, why are we being shutdown. If it is a cycle and I believe it is, let it cycle like we used to without trying to micro manage. Does envirosocialist sound better than treehugger and lib. By the way they call us knuckle dragging NASCAR fans, but whats in a name.

In everything I read, overfishing was never blamed for the current salmon crisis.

Initially, the cause was a huge question mark, although water and habitat issues in the delta were suspected. It's now been accepted that rare oceanic conditions in 1995 caused the smolt die-off.

The fishing community was never blamed for the current crisis, so there's really no need to fight back on this one.
If out-of-control sea lions populations are at least partially to blame, we should just say so. Throwing out labels like "tree hugger" and "lib" doesn't help, and only makes us sound ignorant, in my opinion.

Will,

As you know, I have fished the Smith River for over 25 years. The reports for this year are true - fewer fish and lots of net marks. I talked to one of the volunteers at the Rowdy Creek fish hatchery on the Smith. Years ago they used to raise and release 1 million fish per year - 500,000 king salmon and 500,000 steelhead. The fish were spawned only from wild fish, so the gene pools remained clean. On the steelhead side, over the last few years Fish and Game has reduced the amount of fish they can release to 125,000. The steelhead fishing has indeed declined. This was a world class steelhead and salmon river, and like everywhere else, it is being mis-managed. The net marks seem to come in cycles - about every 3-4 years they will be very prevalent, and then for a few years the only marks we will see are seal teeth and claws.

Steve Merlo on outdoors: Salmon closures incorrectly blamed on fishermen
Batch Data Processor | Thursday, Mar 20 2008 7:20 PM
Last Updated: Thursday, Mar 20 2008 9:05 PM

The waters of Estero Bay lay unusually flat as our private craft slipped past the huge harbor landmark called "Morro Rock," slowly navigated around the jetty guarding the popular tourist resort of Morro Bay then out into the sometimes-raging Pacific Ocean. Despite the ugly gray morning sky above us, the weather forecast spoke of calm seas, and with it, good fishing.

Less than half-a-mile out and in over 100 feet of water, the electronics indicated huge balls of bait from the surface to 70 feet below us, but the meters were not needed. Hundreds of cormorants, pelicans and gulls screamed and dove into the water, feasting on the anchovies being driven to the surface by the ravaging legions of game fish below them.

Rods already baited, the four of us dropped our rigs, counting 1-foot pulls of 12-pound line from our light bass tackle and watching our baits disappear into the depths. At 26 pulls, my line popped and went slack, indicating something down there had interrupted my bait's freefall. I put the reel in gear and tried to catch up with whatever had eaten my offering, then, getting good pressure on the rod tip, set the hook into a solid fish.

Within seconds, the taut line began to rise in the water column and 25-pounds of silvery king salmon blasted into the air. The Chinook immediately gray-hounded across the surface in a thrilling series of leaps then bulldogged for the bottom, where the unyielding pressure from my G. Loomis rod eventually wore her out. With our net at the ready, the fish glowed color a few feet away, ready to land.

What happened next can only be described as scary--and maddening. From beneath our boat, a huge brown shadow suddenly materialized into the unmistakable silhouette of a marauding, 900-pound sea lion. Losing no time, the creature grabbed my prize and sped off, leaving my line broken and my hopes for a salmon dinner dashed.

Losing salmon to sea lions had become almost epidemic even before this trip occurred four-years ago, when salmon numbers were already heading downhill along the Central Coast. The huge animals have all but lost their fear of humans, and do anything they want, including catching millions of other free-swimming salmon. Lately, there are so many lions that they have even moved in and began occupying docks, boats and other man-made attractions where the wild animals have no business whatsoever.

Unfortunately, and effective this week, for those not in the know, the 2008 Pacific salmon season has been completely canceled from the Mexican border north to Canada. In my opinion, common-sense-challenged government entities and so-called 'tree-hugging, no-kill' conservationists blame our depleted salmon on the sport-and commercial- fishermen harvest. These accusing and, once again in my opinion, ignorant officials blame over-fishing for the decline, when in all actuality, it is their no-kill attitude toward sea lions and a bird called a cormorant that hurt the fish.

Sea Lion and cormorant numbers have grown completely out of control because of mismanagement by these "kind," well-intentioned people, but it is they and their "hands-off" approach to conservation management who are responsible for our declining and precious salmon stocks.

Another creature decimating our salmon stock does not prey on adult fish like the sea lion does, but on the brood stock in our rivers and streams instead. The cormorant, a large, sharp-billed diving bird that catches and eats large numbers of fish, efficiently gleans the waters of any and all piscatorial life. Since salmon swim up relatively shallow rivers to spawn, the over-populated, under-controlled cormorants have easy access to millions, if not billions, of precious fry, breaking the circle of life.

Like the sea lion, cormorants are also mismanaged, and the increase in both of their numbers has created complete havoc within our fisheries.

Unfortunately, the powers-that-be do not seem to give a darn, except to point fingers at everyone except where the real blame lies --on them.

If fishermen and other true conservationists really want salmon runs to return to the era when millions of the silvery fish swam and spawned in our rivers and streams, then both the sea lion and the cormorant will need to be properly and effectively managed. This includes harvesting, removing or whatever clever words one can devise to mean killing or getting rid of these freeloaders altogether. I suggest opening a hunting season on both, and do it darned quickly, without regard to their utilization. Kill 'em and bury 'em before it's too late, if it isn't already

That would be a hoot...Then Memorial weekend, my boss hooked us into the Yellow Tail Tourney at Bahia De Los Angeles!! So yesss, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus..Just not on the Central Coast...Locally will try the White Bass at Naci...and the Crappie at Margarita..Catch em now before they close the lakes to mussels only.

There is a lot to be said about that , we go to IDAHO every year , when we hit the cloumbia gorge , there is nothing but nets all the way from the john day dam to who knows where , I stoped at the dam a few years back and there were 100 poles in one stretch , monitered by one family , unbeliveable, they had a lot of fish and offered to sell me some for a dollar a pound , no wonder there are no salmon left .

Food for thought: A friend of mine who fishes the Smith River a lot every year told me the steelhead fishing this winter was the worst he has ever seen. He did catch fish, but he said over 50% of the fish he caught had net marks on them. So maybe the fish we see return are only the ones that escape the drift nets set by you know who...

Woman killed by stingray
Posted: 12:45 PM ET
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) — A stingray leaped from the water off the Florida Keys Thursday and struck a woman who was aboard a boat, killing her, officials said.

“It’s just as freakish of an accident as I have heard,” said George Pino of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “I have seen stingrays leap in to the air, but it’s very rare for them to collide with objects.”

He said it was not clear whether the 55-year-old Michigan woman died from the blow to her head, from the ray’s barb piercing her of from her fall backward.

Friends: No salmon fishing off our coast this year. So, NORTH TO ALASKA (Do you remember that Johnny Horton song?). Take a look at that earlier post by Bob Hather. I have been fishing with Mac Huffman at Frontier Charters and guarantee that you will have a great trip. The lodge is nice and the food is gourmet. I have fished all over Alaska and think that Sitka is the best location in SE Alaska.

That is exactly what I was melting when I had my little explosion....and yes there is lead splatters all the way up above the garage door, burnt a bald spot on the back of my head and my hands when I heard the sucking sound of an explosion I covered my face with my hands. Had about .5 seconds to run once I figured out what was about to happen......wife is still pissed....but glad I am not blinded.

Jim,
I had some of those lead splatters back when I was making jigs. Usually happens when there's an air pocket that water has gotten into. Melting down old cannon ball sinkers used to really cause some action. The awning at my old place was covered with lead! And it does burn!

Pigeon Point to U.S.-Mexico Border (Monterey Bay south)
Recreational ocean salmon fishing south of Point Arena to the U.S.-Mexico border (San Francisco, Monterey and southern port areas) will not open as scheduled on April 5, 2008.

In-season emergency action was taken on March 12, 2008 by the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to close this fishery.

Regulations for the May 2008 - April 2009 ocean salmon fishing season will be decided by the PFMC at their April 7-11 meeting in Seattle, Washington. Please visit the PFMC website (Click on "What's New") for more information on the closure and the three regulatory options adopted for public review.

For additional information, please contact the California Department of Fish and Game Ocean Salmon Project at (707) 576-2873.

Mike, that is just more blackmail from the envirosocialists and the Mothers for shut down. The rate payers are going to pay for this. I look at this and the 750k to build 1/2 mi of bike path as pure stupidity, I`d rather see the money go to help Devaul or better yet to pay my health care premium. Look at whos`e donating to Adam Hill and Jim Patterson and vote accordingly. That`s where this nonsense starts.
