Lake Naci report. White bass bit for a group of fly fishermen that come here every year. They fished Dip Creek. Great Bluegill and Spot fishing around docks. Perfect weather, we have no fuel yet so fill up in town. Dave |

Blackie If I would have had one of Tom's rods back in the day.....Salmon season would have closed 5 years ago. Although I can not wait till May first, I just got a schedule change and had to commit to long hours and bad days off.........but overtime keeps the boat afloat......good luck to all on opening day... |

JIMMY WE NEED TO GET THEM BOATS IN THE WATER DURING THE WEEK WHEN YOU ARE OFF , YOU CAN FISH WITH THE CLUB ANY TIME YOU WANT AS MY GUEST, whoops sorry caps locked up. I have a feeling we will be doing a lot of YAK fishing this year with fuel still going up, Muscle power is cheap, and it keeps you in shape . Im going to buy some STUFF and make those COSTO yaks fishing machines. Are you going to be OFF Thurs opening day? Blackie |

Question. Does the Salmon closure mean that there will be no Salmon fishing the rivers later in the year? I am talking about the Sacramento River near Redding....A place called the Barge hole... By the way, I wish that I had a G Loomis rod back in the days that I used to fish that particular strech of water...There is nothing like the feeling... Anyone looking for the rod of a life time, let me know... I have made friends with a rod maker with great skill...and affordable prices... Jim 610-4498 PS decided to keep the Kyak that I had for sale on Craigslist because I want to spend more time with the coolist MOFO I ever met..Blackie |

George, I use a #4 hook on a Lucky Joe and a small piece of bait helps. We typically start in 100' but if we don't get bit in a couple minutes I run out an other 50' and try again until we hit them. We were catching 2,3,4 at a time and would get bit in the first few seconds. Great eating. Bob |

Harrell, I was off the Gaviota coast; the water is cold but it was a hot day. Left the harbor and the surface temp was 54 and at the end of the day it was solar-heated to 59. The thresher was 100' down. This is the time of year down here when they first start showing in any numbers. |

Fished a few hours Saturday for halibut off Toro Creek working between 40'-70'. The weather and drift seemed perfect for bounce balling. Bait was bagged achovies. Unfortunately, due to a committment at 11am had to make for the barn as the incoming high tide was occuring. Anyway, nada on the hali's however, sand dabs 40 in 2 hours sounds great to me!! Question: How do you just target Sand dabs.....170'ft...What is the best rig and bait... |

fished halibut out near the 10E on sat for nothing - lots of rock fish and lings - but not butts. Water was cold and clear with lots of krill in it - didn't see any sign of bait - but never got out past 80 feet. |

Got the boat back and it was a pleasure to drive to find reds and lings and things rather than wade for the perchies (which I love, but being at the wheel after a few months off was luxurious). Farallon ran great, weather was 93 and glassy....stayed coastal on Saturday and two of us had half limits of fair-grade reds, a 35" ling....but the bonus was the 8' thresher that bit the jig on the way down.....and we landed the critter. BBQ's have been off the shizzle the last two days..... |

I went sand dabbing in 170' of water in front of the Rock for about 40 fish in 2 hours. Steve Goodman still has 4 openings on a first class Sitka Alaska salmon and halibut trip June 13-17. This is a good time for kings. Cost is under $2000 You can email me at rkhather@charter.net. Spotted bass fishing at Naciemento was excellant today. Bob |

Freshwater Report, Fished Lopez yesterday with my buddy Jeff. Water temps started out cold, 57 F, but warmed up to 62 by noon. A little offshore breeze in the morning, but then glassy calm until we left at 1 pm. We caught 2 keeper smallmouth (13-14") and 1 nice largemouth about 3 pounds. Also got two male crappie that weren't close to spawning yet. Probably another few weeks. Need water temps to stay over 60 for a week or so. Absolutely gorgeous day on the water...and hot! FYI, Lopez is being very proactive with the mussel issue. They do a quick inspection of your boat and then power wash it with 140 F water (anything over 104 is supposed to kill the mussels). They were doing a great job and moving poeple through as fast as possible. May try the salt for halibut next week! best fishes, steve |

Blackie, I stole mine on a special deal from someone in that industry that just won it in a drawing. Brand new, never in the water for $700. KFS has it at $800 plus $119 to ship it to your door and no tax. They have a few packages you can add for rigging it, too. Fully rigged now, I installed 2 flush mount rod holders, a RAM mount rod holder, Ritchie compass, anchor trolley, RAM mount for the GPS/FF, & a hatch keeper. Check out that KFS site because they also have good articles on choosing and outfitting yaks. |

Before you guys pull the trigger on a truckload of those FnD's, if you haven't already, go peruse these sites; www.norcalkayakanglers.com www.kayakfishingstuff.com www.kayakfishing.com Maybe even get Dennis Spike's "The Kayak Fishing Video". I met Dennis several years ago and have sat in on several of his symposiums. The video covers virtually everything a beginning kayak fisherman needs to know to get started safely, including thoughts about boat purchases from someone that's been there, done that. There are a lot of Yaks out now designed and configured just for fishing. This has become BIG TIME in the last several years and the manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon with good technology. My intention is not to beat up on the Fn'D but if you're an average sized guy and get into this, you WILL be looking for another boat soon once you get a feel for the sport. The FnD gets its stability from a HUGE wetted surface and its directional stability pales in comparison to most other like equipped yaks. My Ride 135 will run circles around a FnD yet because of its "pontoon" styled hull, I have virtually the same stabilty but much faster speed and directional control and a much better cockpit layout. Look to Wilderness Systems like The Ride 135 or the Tarpons Ocean Kayaks Prowler 13 or the new Prowler 15 Check those forums listed above so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. Good luck! This is the Ride 135 brand new before I rigged it with electronics, etc. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e143/TreeDoc/IMG_0395.jpg |

directboats.com has that Yak on sale for 779.00 plus ship. Maybe have the Pres take a look. I am definately interested...You cant get much closer or intimate to the ocean than fishing like this...any closer and you are wet. Think of the possibilities of all the new hardly ever fished spots we could access!!! |

MARTY ; The club meets the first and third tuesday of every month , we have three alum 14ft skiffs with 15 hp mtrs, gps fish finders , all the saftey gear . We launch out of leffingwell all the time with no problems , three to a boat , catch a lot of fish , cost 5.00 each for fuel. The club meets at the JOSLYN CENTER its the place in CAMBRIA with the lawn bowling in front. Now to the YAKS there are a lot of dealers in MORRO bay but you can get a better deal , our club president is working on a deal now for the COBRA FISH AN DIVE , I think the price was something like 875.00 plus tax and shipping , he is still working on a final price , all so the more we buy the better deal we can get. So lets all get them YAKS and have our own fleet, just think of the FUEL we can save. Blackie |

I am waiting 'till May 1st for fishing. I haven't seen much mackerel or bait out there lately. If I were to go fishing, I would like to try for halibut. The water is 51 degrees, hasn't changed much all year. Cold, clean water will make for good red fishing. |

blackie- you're saying what i've been thinking for a while, fishing economics. in cambria its just not worth it to keep a bigger boat here. fuel, weather, fishing seasons, work and a personal life really make you think about the feasibility of keeping a big boat in cambria. although my ride gets 5 mpg, travel to and from the landings either morro, santa cruz, or ventura is no longer cost effective. figure in the weather and fishing seasons and what you have is an expensive barely used statue sitting in your driveway. i think back when we had the 14' aluminum skiff and fished leffingwell every weekend and caught most of the same fish. easy to launch. no long drive down to morro, or out to the fishing grounds. and if the wind comes up, you can get in quick and go have some breakfast. i'm thinking it might be time to return to my central coast fishing roots. |

Greetings, I've never fished out of a Hobie, but my buddy Marcos has one and loves it (he sold his old smaller one to Gordon who loves his too). It just seems like a really cool idea to be able to fish and move around a little with your hands free. That is the part that is most frustrating when I fish out of my Cobra is to either put the rod in the holder or in my teeth as I manuever with the paddle. The kelp issue is minor since you have a paddle too that can use. If I was going to buy just a fishing kayak...I would definitely get a Hobie. just my 2 cents. steve |

We had a great day on the water with the yaks yesterday , got to try several differnt ones , like the COBRA f an d, . Sounds like the club will be doing a lot of yak fishing, it faster , cheaper and uses no fuel in the boat , if you launch at Morro go to the north for the great spots , DIESEL $4.00 + a gallon , three hours to get there , fish all day come back , three hours cleaning boat and washing gear , it only make sence to go with the options , you can fish all the same water , and theres saftey in numbers , so I think there will be a lot more of the club using this mode. I will be on the beach tomorrow at little Pico,High tide at1.58, wife will stay on top of bluff and be my life guard , just in case I may get a big one that drags me off the beach . Get that gear ready only 20 days. On another note Jr and I got our tickets from LA to CABO the other day for our upcoming VAN WORMER trip , round trip 260.00 ALASKA AIRLINES Blackie |

Just got back from Costa Rica - if you ever get the chance - GO !! Better than I expected in every way. Went for 15 days, fished for 7, and played tourist for 8 - all good. Flt's were $340 round trip - so it was cheaper than going to La Paz and 10 times better. Fished out of Golfito, had a guide from Parrot Bay, for sail and marlin, treid for rooster, but never got one. Lots of reef fishing inside the bay, and good eating. Great country to visit, nice people, good weather, and plenty to do. |

Votes? Ratings? Been around for a few years here and never could figure that stuff out. Guess I never really needed to, but now I'm curious. Anyway...looks like the wind machine is going to shut off for a few days and the weekend looks pretty danged nice for a change, at least down here in the lee of the Point. Time to fish! |
