I don't think the weather will be that bad in the morning, although it probably doesn't take much to make kayak fishing tough.

Chuck;
It is 240 ft for us, south of Pigeon pt and 120 ft north of Pigeon pt.

The computer models indicate next tuesday as a good day weather wise. We'll see if it holds. There will be a minus tide tuesday morning at lauch time though.

Speaking of minus tides, what is the status of the launch conditions at PSL ??

Blackie, the spring winds are a big factor why we don`t need mpa`s in our area. Remember on June 3rd the Sierra Club is backing Adam Hill for supervisor, vote accordingly.

GREAT boating weather for opening day , if you have a sail boat 28 to 30 gust to 40 , dont look good , I think fish and game has an in with GOD and arranges all this for us , that way they can save MORE fish.
I think this year just for something to track I will see just how many days are fishable , winds under 15, would be interesting to see just how many days you can get out there.

Well spoken on the Lady Bugs Bob. For the last couple days in SB we've had Sundowners as well.
An interesting fact that plays into this is that in the channel we have Gale force wind projected after this lull. Just like a couple weeks ago and the same about 4 weeks ago. The wind is really keeping sea temps down and the upwelling seems to be contributing to a enormous phyto-plankton bloom and not the red kind more like good salmon water all the way across to Santa Rosa. It didn't slow down the bite on Reds and Chuckles when I took Naci B to the N/W of the Kerrington Pt closure 200' during the lull about four weeks ago. We fished inside at the west edge of the closure after getting 27 of our 30 fish limit on the outside. We did some drifts in 50' fishin the plastic while cutting our rockfish for some nice Calico, Johnys and Olive rock fish. All released.
On a more current note my brother caught a 36# Hali off Kyler's San Migeal in 18" on Sunday for the Jackpot on the Appolo. This coming Sat or Sun the Nanci B will ride agian and I'll be posting about my own jackpot with any luck.

Fished Montana de Oro for the view (no fish). A couple of things, first I'd really like to read the end of the lost pole story and today there were huge amounts of lady bugs washed up at the surf line.
Whats up with that? saw some on Cayucos beach yesterday too.
Why would an aphid eating bug go to sea? some were still alive.

Fished Lopez today for some very good lake fishing. Water was 60 when I launched at 6:30...warmed up to 66 when I left at 1 pm. Caught about 10 smallmouth and a dozen crappie, including another slab of about 16". All but one of the smallmouth were keeper. The crappie were full of eggs and ready to burst. There were also some shad pushed on the bank which the crappie and smallmouth were chasing. Gorgeous day on the water...probably 90+ out there!
Hope to have saltwater reports for the rest of the year!

Hey, thanks for the fish report. I hope to begin chasing the flatties up here soon. Good to hear that they are in shallow down there. What are the water temps? John (Diablo guy) is forecasting 46 degree upwelling this next week! Ouch;/
I'll be fishing Blowpez again tomorrow. Sure was a nice day today:-)

yes you can use a throw net in the bay. theres a boundry in the back bay that you cant take fin fish(check the dfg regs) but out around the museum and out to the rock is legal. i believe its legal till you get to the four corners towards baywood but i would check into that first. i got this first hand from the guy in charge(fish and game) opening day of salmon(not).

Weather:
The weather for the rockfish opener is not looking real good for a longer run north (Morro) or south (Avila). The computer models for thurs/fri indicate 20kts wind and 10-12 ft swell. Close and early might be doable and of course weather is subject to change.

On a fishing note my brother caught a 31" Hali in 10' of water from the bass tube today out of Ellwood in SB and a commercial friend of mine got 3 to 40# bounce balling along the coast 4 days ago.

Lou,

The water is so cold down here because all the ice has melted at the poles and all that cold water is mixing into the ocean (just kidding). But hey, look on the bright side, at least we will be able to go fishing at the north pole in January without an ice breaker.

After 12 months of formal meetings, innumerable informal meetings, and
input and review from a science advisory team, the stakeholder group
developed three MPA proposals for the north central coast, identified as
proposals 1-3, 2-XA and 4. The task force determined that all three
proposals were well-designed and worthy of consideration.

Ultimately the task force voted to blend elements of all three
proposals in developing its preferred alternative, which consists of
nine state marine conservation areas (8.4% of the study region), two
state marine parks (0.5%), eleven state marine reserves (11.6%), and two
state marine recreational management areas (0.2%).

SOUNDS FAMILIAR!!

Steve, Spit out the blue pill. I don't need to hear from you about how everything is getting hotter during a cold spell. It doesn't make sence. Just enjoy the fact global warming/climate change hasn't wiped us out for another year. Our water in and around SB and the islands is as cold as I've felt it for the last 10 years.

Just because the West Coast ocean temps are cold doesn't mean everything else isn't warm. This was in the news last week.

March the warmest on record over world land surfaces
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID – Apr 17, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) — Planet Earth continues to run a fever. Last month was the warmest March on record over land surfaces of the world and the second warmest overall worldwide. For the United States, however, it was just an average March, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Thursday.

Cold water is great for the rockfish spawn, considering we had cold water all last year, we are on a good path for rockfish. Cold water is also great for rockfishing. The only rockfish that are really active in the warm temp. are blue bass. As we all know there are many different factors that we don't understand, so in the long run...we will just have to wait for seven more days and see.

Usually the humpbacks will stay 5 or more miles off shore until they come in to feed twice a day, and eat 55,000 pounds! That is when we see them close to the beach.

I keep hearing that Ventura and S.B. are catching quite a few salmon on there rockfish trips.
