Friends: A brief update from Foster City.

Steve Moore and Darby Neil and I are all here lobbying for fishing on the Central Coast. It is a "good news/bad news" situation.

The "bad news" is that last year they completed a totally bogus blue rockfish stock assessment that suggests we are "overfished" on blues (by a fraction of a percent). All the fishermen are up-in-arms about the assessment because everyone agrees that the assessment is ridiculous. Even some of the scientists at NOAA agree that the assessment is bad. However, the PFMC has approved the stock assessment that says blue rockfish are at 29.7% of virgin biomass. When a nearshore species is below 30% of virgin biomass ... it is considered overfished. So, the state of California has to go through a rebuilding plan to get blue rockfish back above 40% of virgin biomass. All of this is a complete farce. This blue rockfish stock assessment is going to cut the guts out of the fishing season in 2009 and 2010 for regions north of Monterey Bay.

The good news ... is that CDFG (at this mooment) is planning to recommend that the Feds approve a fishing season for our region and the region which includes Monterey Bay of 7 months in 2009 and 2010 which are the identical months that we have now.

If we get those 7 months (out to 40 fathoms), then we will be fortunate ... when compared to all regions north of Monterey Bay who will get their seasons chopped by 2 or 3 months.

All of this is tentative ... and we will not know for sure on our seasons until late Thursday or early Friday when the Council votes on the issue.

Hugh,
If you have a 14' skiff, I would recomend that you launch it yourself off of the peir. You'll need some heavy rope or straps. Do some tests lifts to be sure your boat is sitting right. It costs 4 quarters to operate the lift. This is way cheaper than the Portside Marine sportlaunch...and much safer than launching through the surf. Saw a guy two weeks ago coming in with a 14 footer almost bite the big one...his motor did fall off and washed around in the surf and sand for a little while...ouch!
Email me if you have any further questions.
later,
steve

Hugh,
If you use 'their' sling to get your boat in, it'll cost you 20-30 bucks. And they don't open until after 6am.

Hi everybody, I'm planning on pulling my 14ft aluminum boat down to PSL to fish and RV camp on the side of the road. What do I need to get the boat in the water? Should I get my own sling? Should I head north or south to fish? Any info about camping or fishing out of PSL would help. Thank you.

Friends:
Darby Neil (Virg's), Steve Moore (Patriot Sportfishing) and I will be going up to Foster City for the PFMC meeting this week. I had said earlier that maybe we would need to marshall the troups to get a big group of Central Coast fishermen to speak for longer seasons of rockfishing at the meeting ... but I think things are going okay. I think it is quite certain that we will get at least the same 7 mos. of fishing that we have now (May-Nov.) ... or more... for the next two years (2009 & 2010). Obviously, you are all invited to come to Foster City (Crowne Plaza Hotel) to watch the proceedings. You might be interested in seeing the process the seems to be taking away our fishing rights.

I will keep you posted.

Re canning: A little white vineger in the water helps keep the inside of the cooker from turning black. Sometimes I will add a jalepeneo pepper, clove of garlic or a piece of ginger to the tuna before canning, but its great plain also. Make the wind stop please!!!

That Tall Ship is from Ecuador. It is some kind of military training for their higher ranking officers. They are one their way to Canada, over to Asia, then home. The ship is supposed to leave today but, with this weather they'll probably be here a week.

I am going out tomorrow Marty. Today was not unfishable for us, but the wind is getting tiresome. The water temp has been averaging 45 degrees all week, with 49 degrees on the beach and 50 degrees in the bay. This will be good for the future of the fishies. There seem to be an abundance of "red bass" (2-3 lbs. reds) this year in 120-190 ft. of water. Although the blues haven't been biting (they usually don't when the water is very cold) limits are easily had by those who keep there hooks in the water. The swell and wind seemed to come down today, so we shouldn't see as much residual tomorrow morning (knock, knock, knock). Good luck if you go, and don't fall in the water.

Canning: Boil your lids and jars. Fill the jar up to about 3/8 in from the top. You can add a little water or not. You can add a little salt or not. Clean any fish or salt from the top rim of the jar. Put the lid on and screw on the lid but not tight. The canner needs about one inch of water in the bottom. Stack your cans in and heat to 250 degrees which is about 12 pounds pressure. Monitor the heat for 90 minutes at 12 pounds without a lot of pressure leaking from the canner. Take off heat but let stand until the pressure goes down by itself. If you releave the pressure with the relief valve, the jars will boil over and the lids will not seal. When there is no pressure left in the canner take the jars out with a special set of tongs made for canning. The jars that are properly sealed will appear to still be boiling inside and the lids will have sucked down. Tap each lid with a spoon to hear a ping. If you hear a thud it did not seal. Wash the outside of the jars and remove the rings around the lids. The fish will be good for many years. I've eaten mine after five years and it was the same as new.

Clear and Chilly Spring
Winds blow record book away
Recent gusty northwesters are the strongest that meteorologists at Diablo Canyon have seen here
By David Sneed
If this seems like a particularly windy spring, you’re not imagining it.

John Lindsey, marine meteorologist with Pacific Gas and Electric Co., said the weather station at Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant recorded more wind this spring than any time since records began being kept there in the mid-1970s.

“These have been consistently the strongest northwesterly winds we have ever seen,” he said.

The gusty conditions are caused by a series of high pressure zones over the Pacific Ocean and Northern California coupled with low pressure zones over Southern California and southern Nevada.

Masses of air traveling from north to south have caused wind gusts of up to 50 mph. The winds have also kept air and ocean water unseasonably clear and chilly.

Windy conditions are expected to continue through the weekend and into the middle of next week. A break in the weather is expected Wednesday, when typical summer conditions are forecast with warmer temperatures inland and low clouds and fog along the coast.

The wind has prompted the National Weather Service to issue numerous wind advisories for coastal areas and gale warnings on the ocean.

Fishermen and others who make their living on the ocean have been noticing unsafe conditions caused by the rough seas, Lindsey said.

Wind blowing across the ocean causes colder, nutrient-rich water to well up from the depths. May saw record low ocean temperatures at the nuclear plant, and June is also on track for unseasonably chilly water.

Ocean temperatures at the plant were 49 degrees Thursday. Temperatures below 50 are unusual for June. The abundance of nutrient-rich water may set the stage for lush kelp growth and algae blooms in the summer, Lindsey said.

Reach David Sneed at 781-7930.

Blackie-- I learned poke-poling as a kid catching monkey face eels outa the rocks at the VFB Boathouse (not been there in decades now, but still wish a public boat launch ramp could go there). A real kick. But there was a special way to cook the eel-critters, had to be par-boiled 1st then we fried them like usual otherwise they fried up as mush w/nasty flavor. Delish after learning the right technique. What I remember most was warning to keep fingers away from the business end of the eel, could take finger off pronto (I never tested this warning - one of the few things I listened to and heeded as a kid haha).

I have seen others catch nice black n yellow RF and cabezons using poke poles even in the rocks by PSL fronting the parking lot. Guluck if ya give it a try.

We all have those days when nothing in the tackle box seems to work (have had that experience many times with salmon even when I just knew they were there). But our last trip out, the only thing that got bit was Gulp 6" White/Pearl curly-tail worm, so I certainly wouldnt give up hope on DEM BLOODY SAND WORMS. FWIW and Best regards, Cloud out

There are two custom rod makers that frequent this site. I have bought a couple from Tom Lewis, I could put you in touch with him if you like. You can get a custom rod for just a little more than a quality over the counter one.

Tin Can

Virges landing in Morro Bay has beat the price on Bass Pro or Cabellas every time I have shopped there. Last month I got 4 rod reel combos and saved 100 bucks over bass pro....plus no shipping. I have a bunch of rods and reels for sale also. give me a call at 610-4498 if interested...

Hello,
I used to fish these waters (port San Luis/Gaviota/MB) as a kid. I have not fished here in 15+ years. I recently bought a boat and I am in the process of replacing the engine with my son as a project. I want to get him into fishing and bugging. Can anyone reccomend a good local tackle store. I have to re-gear with everything. I am looking for a good local spot to spend my money and get some good gear, great advice, and reasonable prices. I live in PR but can drive. Thanks for any help. See you on the water soon.

Fished out of MB again on Sunday. We headed out at 7:00 and had about 2 1/2 good fishing hours before the wind came up at 9:30.I headed straight back to the 130ft area between the "killers" buoy and the Abalone Farm where we fished on saturday and the big reds were still stacked up pretty good in there. We all fished swimbaits with a strip of squid and had a steady pick at 4-7lb reds with one 28"lingcod,and a couple big chuckleheads.White swimbait and a 2oz red leadhead, or purple "chovie" with a 2 oz purple leadhead seemed to work best....I'll be back out on saturday if the wind backs off a little....jeff

Update on Port San Luis

Construction proceeds apace on the new restrooms, shower, laundry facility. The contractor is moving into the boat parking area. The end result will be a complete paved area for trailer boaters/overnighters. We will also be doing some improvements at the boat wash-down area, improving drainage and directing all run off to a new in-ground filtration system to be located near the fuel tank. When this occurs, the boat wash-down area will be down for about ten days. I’ll talk with Marty about the least disruptive timing for this. We’ll also establish a temporary set-up close by so that there will still be boat wash capability – I’ll post again when I know the date certain for this to happen.

ALBACORE !
The Apollo reported 25 small LFT (5-8 lb.) on their 5 day trip last week. Let's hope it is the start of a great season. We have 60+ degree water at 125 miles south west and about 300 miles due west of us. When the wind backs off the temp should jump up even closer to us.
Speaking of the wind the models show at least another week of it.

Tim, thanks and yep that was us, I've never seen another Robalo 22 beside mine in these parts, tho I have seen my old Robalo 18 CC on occasion and another 18' CC I don't know where from.

Easy was to tell if its me is the big sticker on port side transom "Joy Lyn" (Daughter's middle name + Wife's middle). Both love hali fishing (um....catching).

Here's to more hali's next time. Cloud out

Hey Cloud,
I'd guess that was you coming in around 3:30 Saturday in the Robalo WA? Saw you guys securing that ol' white Grub just off Fisherman's Beach where I was working my Labrador through some retreiving drills. Wish I would have known that was your rig as I would have come over to shoot the breeze.

Congrats on that Halibut!

Joy Lyn's Fishing Report Saturday 5/31 PSL

It was a "bay day" for us, furthest we made it was Pirates and above White Rock area. Daughter and 20-month Grandson for crew. Ended up with one enormous Bolina, a decent black n yellow and a nice gopher...and 1st Hali of the year on the first SW trip of the year. Caught by Daughter who did an excellent job catching, fighting, on light tackle. Hali was 23 1/2", caught right in front of Pirates in about 26 feet of water. All fish bit on "Gulp!" 6" white curly-tail grub worm on leadhead. So we had a 4-fish total for the day.

Nice day on the water fishing with Daughter and Grandson? ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS.

Other notes....heard that Deke has been trying hard to scratch up some more bait but as of Saturday no luck, thanks Deke for giving it a try. Saw the Billy-Boy (Morro) bait boat being hauled out for maintenance.

There are some changes being made to the parking lot next to the RV camping area, where the boat & trailer "overflow" is. If bringing RV/Boat combo might be a good idea to check with Harbor District whats going on. As usual for this time of year the RV areas were packed.

Cloud out

Fished out of MB this morning with two friends for 30 rockcod (20 reds,5 gophers,5 starries),1 lingcod just over 27",and 1 HUGE ling that let go at boatside. The best bite was from 8:30 to 9:45,right below the abalone farm in 125-132 ft.I fished white swimbaits with a red leadhead and the other guys used white or purple/black jigs....Both worked equally well with a strip of squid for flavor...I'll be back out tomorrow in the same spot....jeff

Hey Steve, Lopez was a bust for us, got there kinda late and man was it hot already. My FW skills arent what they usedta be either. I went toward the dam and that arm, just couldnt get anything to go trolling or with bait (methods that have worked for me in past). And getting older sure makes it hard to work with lite line. But we did have a great day on lake with wife, daughter, grandson. Especially grandson (20 months). The kid loves the boat already. Today will be his first ocean trip which I am really looking forward to. It'll be a day in the bay as I am not sure when he can have seasick med. I know a few rockpiles and of course there's always a chance at a hali.

Thanks for the comeback looking to have a great day on the water. Give a shout if out, 68 as usual. Cloud out

Had a great day on the water with my partner Rob on the King Willie. Since we're both retired, we decided to leave a little later (0700) - and all was perfect. Flat water, miniscule wind and hungry fish. We fished off of Spooner's Cove and ended the day with four lings (largest 16 lbs - caught by Rob), half a dozen reds (up to 6 lbs - mostly mine), two greenlings and 4 lb Johnny. In the afternoon we thought we'd run to the other side of Estero Bay and look for some flat fish - when we got there the wind was howling and the boat was drifting faster than I go in the harbor! Anyway - we cut our losses and heading back to Morro to clean fish and wash down the boat.

Just a great day on the water - then add the Lakers winning and it just doesn't get any better.

Bill

fished the estero bay the last couple days. day one pounded sand for nada. bounced balled my way out to the 10e high spot and down to toro creek. then up to cayucos to drift frozen baits the rest of the day. all for nothing. water was cold and dirty. today we ran up to hazards for limits of very nice reds and one ling. the water seemed to clean up a bit, and warmed up to almost 58 in the afternoon. and that's pretty much when we started getting bit. i could see lots of fin bait, dolphins and a few whales. much better signs than yesterday. no wind or swell at all today. i also saw a big salmon chasing bait on the surface today. very cool. once this water cleans up a bit we'll probably see some better fishing.

Fished with Joe on the BBQ Sunday with Steve and Mike. Ran all the way up to the cape for limits of nice reds and lings. Long ride but worth every minute. Fish were slow but steady. Some nice size including 3 lings over 12lb, one at 21lbs and some reds that were easily 7+lbs. Thanks for a great day Joe!

Steve,
We stayed in the 40-50' depth range only. As I mentioned, we only made two drifts before heading in. Even though I had the Bag deployed, our drift was still a little fast for our situation and the wind was building so we ran in. I need to buy a bigger Bag.

Hey, nice work Tim. Sounds like some good local fishing. Awesome to get a hali...how deep were you? Sounds like they are definitely in!
Good to meet you too Bert. Sounds like the trip was worth it for you guys. It is usually not that slow down there...as much as Pacific Horizon was moving around, I think it was slow for everyone.
Thanks Deke for getting bait!!!
later,

Fished PSL today. Made our run uphill off Pecho. 2 limits for 2 rods. Mostly Reds with a few Starry and a couple Copper to finish it off. 1 Ling "to go" with several shorts released then we made 2 drifts for 'Buts as the wind was building and managed 1 Halibut at 27-28" before we headed in just after noon.

Beautiful day out there today and even though the wind came up, without the swell it was still like a lake!
