Dear Amir,
It is as Abdul Latif has put it. Grouper a.k.a. Hamour a.k.a. Ghisser is a bottom dwelling fish. When hooked, it heads straight towards cover, especially holes in rocks and reefs, where it either cuts you off or if it manages to enter a hole, it inflates its gills and becomes almost impossible to be pulled out. All you can do is slacken your line and wait until it feels secure enough to leave the hole. Alternately, you can try irritating it by making the line as taut as possible and plucking on it as on a guitar.
As far as how good or bad it fights, it is true once you are able to stop the hamour in its first rush and pulled is some way towards the boat, it does not put up much of a fight, but it is always a tough fish to subdue on or around structure.

Just remembered, another technique which had been sworn upon by other anglers are those "powerjig" lures. However just got hold of a few of those and will only be able to test their effectiveness next fishing session...maybe next season.

Just my 2fils.....on your hamour query.
1) hamour is not really that physically difficult to catch. Its not one of those fish which requires some sort of specialised gears and/or technique to catch. I and few of my other Bruneian fishing buddies had caught Hamour either by ;
a) normal bottom fishing using sardines, squids or shrimps as bait
b) slow trolling (max 3knotts) using spinners/spoons
c) sabiki rigs (one with green flurrys) WITHOUT bait.
2) Hamour have a tendency to head straight for the rocks or any underwater structures thus is after "hookset" if your drag is still fairly loose, the line will be dragged towards the rocks/reefs which will eventually cut it.
3) Hamour is not that strong a fighter. It will only fight while at the bottom, once lifted it will become quite limp/weak due to its intolerence towards decompression. This is why while deep sea fishing the inner floatation bouy will usually balloon up.
4) The main reason why there is a general believe that such fish is difficult to catch is because of the fact that its quite diffcult to locate in the first place. The fish is quite highly prized thus most hunted/fished causing its number to dwindle.
Like I said, just my 2fils!.......Others might have totally different opinions altogether!

Hi Ijlal,
I have heared from everyone here that Homour is a difficult fish to catch in UAE i.e.its difficult to pull out an Homour of water. But back in Pakistan, Hommour (aka Grouper / Ghisser) is not considered a good fighter at all.
Is it that its difficult to pull out an Hommour through casting because it runs straight in to the rocks but on the other hand it should not give any problem while bottoming from a boat.

I went to Atef and checked out the boat. I think the inflatable is huge, though the thickness of the material is not g8 enough.
I think, the boat would do well enough in the channels / creek and in the sea during winters when the sea is calm.
I see it a good recreational boat rather than a complete fishing boat, though it could be used for bottom fishing within 300-400 meters in the sea.

Yeah Abdul. And your pals were not the only ones frustrated. I had Anton and Aji on for the trip and later down my neck. Anton rushed and in less than 2 hours spent about 900 quid on leads, braid, other accessories and carry-on's just for the trip. And to make things even more uncomfortable, after the cancellation, he consulted the captain of his dad's boat, who told him its a "normal sea" nxt day. But what his captain dindt take into account was his dad's boat is a princess class yacht and ours was to be a small cruising boat which couldnt fare such weather and is subject to govt control for sea faring.
All in all Aji and Anton did go to Jumeirah jetty from 4.30am to 9 am and caught nothing. Seas were too rough. So thats that.
Anyway, my thanks and regds to Kim who all through the rough seas and frustration kept his calm and did good job of co ordinating. Although he must have been the one most dissapointed coz it was his initiative.
Kim lets do something next week bout Ajman (Kempenski whereabouts) or UAQ.

The sea was horribly rough with strong winds. This had made our planned fishing trip to "finish off" the season to be cancelled!!!!!!
Two of our fellow Bruneians who were supposed to join us for the trip on Friday morning were highly FRUSTRATED that they had decided to go on their own boat to fish in Abu Dhabi water that Thursady night.
As the water was very choppy and winds very strong, they had to seek shelters in one of the enclosed bay. Fishing for about 06hours in such conditions yielded very bad catch. Only one good sized sherie and rest were not even palm sizes thus released.
Hoping to post "better" report next week from our(the two guys above & myself with our families, Mohammed might tag along) on land expedition to Muscat. We plan to do a bit of fishing off the waters of Oman on chartered boat on Friday morning.
From what we had gathered, its TUNA season NOW! Thus just can't wait to hear Ms. Stella SCREAMING again!!!!!!!!!

Hi Abdul,
We paid AED 500 for around 4 hours. The boat was spacious enough to accomodate 4 people.
Yes, you are spot on regarding the timings. We were very late. Additionally the feeding times have to be kept in mind, which would be ideally around early morning and in the afternoon.
No pictures of the catch, however, some pictures of us swiming in the caves.
Additionally, we did not go very deep as it was very windy and the sea was rough, additionally Ashley and Pranab were not eager on trolling.
We reached Dubai at around 3p.m and as I & Ali did not feel the heat very much so we went for casting and managed a better outing in casting as well.

"PERSONALLY" I would sya that starting at 0930hrs is WAY too late.
Best timing for fishing now.....as what we had experienced last week is just at the time of sunrise and a only about a couple of hours after that.
This could be due to the fact that all the fishes are starting to look/hunt for food as soon as they are able to see clearly during the first break of sunlight.

Hi Guys,
Me, Ali, Pranab & Ahsley went out on aboat trip from Dibba on friday morning.
Reached there at 7:15 but left for sea by 9:30. (quite late).
Did not try much trolling (20 minutes or so) and then strated bottoming using shrimps, squid and sardines. Squid was the most effective and was mostly used.
Managed so catch six red homours, a queen fish, a few breams and plenty of some other fish ( dont remember the name). The total catch must be around 7-8 kgs. The size of the fishes were not very big, though big enough for the table. Smaller ones were released back.
Left the water after 3 hours as it was becoming very hot.

Sorry guys. The charter could not get permission from the marine authority consecutively on Friday and Saturday.
I don't think that the sea is that choppy as they claim, but I guess the reason is that it is more a cruising boat than a fishing boat.
Anyway.. I will arrange another "Season-Off" session next week with other charters in Sharjah or in UAQ. Let's be patient just for another week.

Gentlemen!
If you want your rods ready by next season, i will have to burn afew weekends to get it going.
Else the fish is going to break another few rods into the next season. Also, couple of repairs work to be done.
Be ready for the monster fights, strong rods requires good and fit anglers. Most time, the angler breaks before the rod. Having flu today...only land based activites encouraged.

Well, but... you are right. The word of "Last trip" should be applied ONLY to me, not for the rest of the passionate fishermen in the forum. Sorry for causing confusion. Anyway, it really is too hot nowadays to expect good fishing results for the money paid. I "personally" decided this trip as my last one until October.
But who knows? If somebody seduces me to join another fishing trip next week, I may be attracted again... Frankly speaking, I somehow used the word of "Last" as most of commercialists do, such as "last sale", "last piece"... etc. to attract more customers. hehehe...
P.S. Actually there is one more slot left for tomorrow to make the team of 6 instead of 5. How about joining my "LAST" fishing for the season, for the "LAST" slot, Dylan?

Fristly, lemme address things in order of "recall"
Welcome back Kim....never realized you had been away. You know how life has its own meandering ways but its nice to see youve come in with a boom and a bang and no less energetic from teh wear and tear of the journey to Jordan. Wish you guys good fishing tomorrow. I missed the spot by probably an hour or so coz I was busy since my mother is leaving on a short trip tomorrow and had to chaperone her.

Atef..my friend its not my intention to cast doubt and least of all, aspersion, on the Excursion 5 or to hamper your efforts to sell em on this forum. Regardless of the the price, positioning or product..its always different strokes for different folks bro
So, just so you understand my position -
Q1. Would I buy it? YES. For the price. But I'm a different kinda person. And I'm buying it for MY OWN REASONS.
Q2. Would I recommend it to friends in the UAE for fishing offshore? I dont think I would. I'm just being brutally honest buddy. Pls appreciate that. I havent experienced this boat BUT from the specs and the pedigree provded on various fishing forums, no. Simply becasue there are better producs...BUT they are far more expensive ...like $2000+ (inclusive of entire gear)
Weather the east or the west coast...the seas in teh UAE are pretty capricious. And I would seriously think twice before I load 5 persons on a boat of this nomenclature. But that is just my SENTIMENT.
But i'm seriously thinkin of buying this boat for sure...for light usage on calm, placid waters..lakes and dams mostly. And occassionally rivers. I may take even 2 or 3 of these because they are kinda cost effective.
Okay then matey's and avaaast ye land lubbers eh?

guys guys... i already mentioned b4 that the excursion can be taken not far into the sea. just about 1000m from the shore is sufficient enough keeping in mind calm weather conditions is most suitable. ofcourse if you are not a strong swimmer, you MUST wear a life jacket. i have been taking this boat out to sea most of the time and i have complete control over the boat. b4 you go into the sea, learn how to paddle and steer the boat for atleast 8hrs.
it is necessary that you have enough experience and then only can you venture out to sea.

Yeah Yeah....Bout me taking you back to shore is not so shore but me "attempting" to get you BACK IS for 'shore' bro...wouldnt leave u out there..even if Cudas are in the water u Cuda trust me
Just in case, you should also buy high frequency whistles and always take along life jackets - available in picnico, sun n sands, one shop next to baby shop in karama etc. May even get em in Carrefour. And you must have water proof torchlights. Some good brand. Its always nice to take a harpoon..coz you'd wouldnt be surprised if a nice shark or stingray or hammour or cuda or other nice tasty bugger just surfaced near the boat whanking round. Witha harpoon you could just got...ZZZZZIFFFT...and yank the bugger in.
About draggon mall...jus be carefull. If it was me... I would buy stuff like motors from there. just my two bit opinion. |

I dont think that we would catch anything bigger then palm size using the boat and the gaf would be used to tow out boat if it flattens
It would be more of a recreational thing rather then a fishing thing

Thanks for the sincere advise.
I totally agree with you regarding the safty aspect. Thats the reason I am not going to get the motor at the moment.
And Me and Ali would be splitting the cost, thats the reason, I am interested in the boat as it would cost us each AED 450. Not that big an investment, actually would rather call it an expense rather than an investment.
Additionally, as also stated by Abdul once, that its always better to experience things ourselves and then only we can judge the various aspect involved.
Ill give you an example. I researched a lot on Quad bikes as I was interested in getting one. In a hurry I purchased one from Dragon mart for AED 3,000. After using the bloody thing, i came to know that its was a two wheel drive and could not get on the dunes. Then I came to know that there are two wheel drives as well as four wheel drives. One is for soft terrain and the other one for harder terrains. I experienced it my self and knew the difference.
Therefore, we would sure check the god damned inflatable before risking it in open waters. Otherwise will use it on the beach itself.
Once we have the boat, we could go out for a ride with you incase any thing goes wrong, you are there to take us to the shore

Aslo, Amir Bro, like I was discussing with Abdul yesterday...when it comes to fishing out of inflatables is the risk of sharp cutting edges, impalers (hooks, gaffs, stray sabikis and even braid)and of impacts - against sharp coral formations or even embedded crustacean shells on the edges of reefs and rocks) and EVEN FINS OF WRITHING FISH YOU HAVE CAUGHT - THESE CAN PUNCTURE THE BOAT HULL!!! The leak could be imperceptible until critical.
But on the net I did come accross a salt water inflatible which --THEY CLAIM...can wihtstand the impact of a hook hammer!!! Really cant say anything bout this though. |

DEAR Amir, you are one of the most sincere & guileless persons I have met. Whilest on teh other end I am a diehard Cynic. I always play the Devils Advocate.
The Excursion 5 is not much of a "fishing" boat as much as an "excursion" boat, as its branding clearly implies.
Please understand, I dont mean to influence your decision to buy or anyone's attempt to sell this boat, either on this forum or on amazon or eBay or anywhere.
THIS is purely a personal judgement a data assessment based on what I have compiled so far.
Firstly, I have a grudging respect the sea - having been born into a "sea faring" family of sorts I was made familiar with the eccentricities and unpredictabilites of the ocean from a very young age and treat it as a good friend and a TERRIBLE foe. Dichotomy of sorts.
I dont trust this boat particularly becoz of the abundance of "so called deals" offered on this product on the net and other forums. If a product is too cheap or readily discounted I, my trust too gets discounted. Especially if its not a tried, tested and proved product.
Now, If I were to purchase trousers, beach shorts, flip-flops or nail clippers I'd be ready for the "bargain" risk. But if it involved eggs, poultry & meat, electric gadgets or car tyres..or boats...i wouldnt make a compromise becasue it would directly impact my safety and those who are with me.
About boats, the reason is my healthy respect for the sea. This product is available for as little as AED 600 over the net - along with the motor!!!!! And anything like this which does not have established credentials cannot be something you could actually risk you life on..and certaily not that of your family....and out at SEA unless all passengers/guests are strong swimmers/atheletes and you have all necessary life saving equipment - flares, food, water, GPS, batteries et al.
BECAUSE YOU MUST UNDERSTAND - THE SEA DONT TAKE COMMANDS - IT DICTATES. WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE YOU COULD BE SUDDENTLY SWEPT BY AN UNDERTOW OR A SQUALL DEEP OUT TO SEA.
As for me, the reason I'm interested is to take it home and use it as a "mechanized raft" on a quiet lake or river (at the river mouth, not rapids)along with veterans of the waters ..coz even calm rivers at the mouth can have areas infamours for whirlpools.
Regards installing the motor on the boat...please dont think its a "simple matter". As someone once said "NOTHING IN LIFE IS SO SIMPLE THAT IT CANNOT BE DONE WRONG".

hi dylan.
well in regards to the motor, i recommend using a max of 3hp. the boat cant withstand more than 15kmph of speed. the motors are available at dragon mart and are mostly unbranded between dhs900-1000. the branded ones are seldom available and are more costly starting at about dhs 1900 - 3000
all these motors are powered by petrol.

Hi Dylan,
With respect to the excursion 5 boat, from what ever information, I have gathered, we can use a motor of a max 2-3 hp which would attain a speed of around 10-15 km per hour.
This boat comes with two hinges (rings) at the back of the boat (motor fittings) on which a motor mount would have to be attached and the motor would be fixed on that motor mount.
There are petrol motors of 2-3 hp available in dragon mart within the price range of AED 900-1000.
However, the motor mount would have to be built. Its not a very technical thing.

Hi Cmit Kumar...I understand your'e Atefs fishing buddy. Excellent for you mate and the the links you provided are good enough. But could you also provide the manufacturer's recommendation for Outboards? like 4Hp or 6HP or 9HP etc...and what specific BRANDS the manufacture recommendS to be best compatible with both the boat's dynamics and mounting specs. This is so I can ride in the cost of the motor to calculate the Total Cost of acquiring the boat.

I second what abdul wrote about the sabiki rigs. My only addition is that you should probably buy a selection of sizes (as they are cheap) and try which ones work best for the fish you are targeting.

Mackrel has worked well for me in these waters. Infact its what we use for live bait on the east coast and I have used it as dead bait here in dubai. Catches all the major predatory fish. However I have found mackrel to be far more durable as a bait as compared to other fish like sardines and that was without using the method you mentioned. Will give it a try though.
