Dave,
No leaks what so ever? Didn't think there was but had to be sure. Let it set for about 45 minutes. My son used to work at the gate at Naci last summer. Chayvon is his name? Perhaps you know him

Tincan, I work at the marina and heard the front gate talking to the rangers. I watched you put it in the water. Nice boat, I take it it didn`t leak.

John,
The boat washed ashore at V.A.F.B. sun afternoon. Max is heading down today to come up with a game plan to salvage the boat. If I can i'll go to help out, and I would like to see first hand what was the problem.

Right On, Dave! Way to keep up with the "1" votes!!! LOL!

I'm aware of the prescription issue. Because I'm such an Internet tough guy, I felt the need to lie. The truth is that these guys held me down and pummeled me when they found out I had the pills. I was lucky to escape with my life.....and the remaining 20 pills.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Fished PSL yesterdays for limits of reds, Chuckleheads & legal ling.

I'm in need of some 1-votes.

Sorry for your loss Max...

I heard (2nd hand of course) That you had a leak in your transom, KNEW about it, was warned about it and you still went out ??? Because you thought your bilge would handle the incoming ???
Great planning or totally stupid... ?

TREE DOC:
You can now obtain "Scopace" by perscription through your Doctor. (THAT'S TRUE)

Be aware guys...
Even tho your thoughts are in kind, to help your fellow fishermen & women...
Joe Anyboybody offering perscription meds to someone is illegal for one. And for 2: If that person has an adverse reaction to something you gave them (B-cuz maybe it didn't go with what the person had already taken) YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE AND CAN BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE !

Dave,
Yes that was me at the lake testing the hull. Were you the ranger? Since then I have acid washed and painted. Can not wait to get on the water.

Harrell,
I think it is foam. I did not build the hull. It was a custom boat by Marshal Marine in Santa Cruz. They are no longer in business. The main engine compartment and battery and drive line go down about a 30" section down the middle of the boat. Other than that the rest of the floor should be foam. No way to access or tell though. I dont want to drill any homes incase it is chambered. The boat is pretty rock solid I beleive.

SST/Chlorophyll

Some good looking water ar the 1908 but not quite warm enough. Terrafin has it at 58 and Temp Break a little warmer. Will be watching it to see when it gets closer and warmer.

Tincan2;
Is your boat chambered or foamed for flotation ? When I built my boat I put in enough foam to float 6000 lbs so I feel pretty safe,

Max
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I am glad you are safe. As a new member to this site and about ready to launch a 1997 24' aluminum pilot house boat I have been working on cringed when I read your post. Does anyone have any idea why your boat sank and so quickly.

Again glad you are okay and wow tons of respect for those that helped you! When I was a kid fishing these waters 20 years ago, you didn't have online support you have now. Often it was learn by doing and sometimes the hard way. This site is great for fishing in general, the sport, and helping your fellow fishermen. I look forward to meeting some of you and would love to fish along side of you anytime. I am not a grumpy old fisherman or ahole. I just want to get back into a sport I used to love and introduce my teenage kids to the sport. Man it has been a while since we lined up 10 flatties on a broom stick taken from my 14' valco with a 25HP. My new engine 350 fuel injected Marine Power comes in this week. I want to be on the water by July 15th. If any of you want a fishing boat buddy in July send me an email. Again thanks to the ones that helped Max, its guys like you who should be proud to be fishermen and MEN!

Tim;
Right on with the scopace (pills) ! I have used them ALL and scopace is the one that never failed me.

The marine layer finally cleared, out where the albacore usually come from this time of the year,so we should be getting some good SST and maybe even chlorophyll shots tonight or tomorrow. Fingers crossed that there will be some 60+ degree water headed our way and not too far. It is not unusual to catch them in June.

Regarding Sea Sickness Treatments;

You can now obtain "Scopace" by perscription through your Doctor. Though it utilizes the same ingredient that the patch uses, Scopalamine, this is in pill form and as far as I'm concerned, it's a wonder drug if you are prone to motion sickness. I literally had to educate the Pharmicist at Long's about it when they attempted to fill my order with "The Patch" but they ordered it in and I had it the next day. I learned about this stuff when I spoke with an MD from Hope Pharmaceuticals a year ago in March at the Fred Hall Show and he gave me the run down. Apparently NASA has been using this to treat the Astronauts during their missions.

For me, no drowsiness, no dopiness, no loss of appetite, VERY slight dry mouth, no other side effects. Best part is, if you're like me and seldom need it but are on one of those trips where it becomes necessary, this stuff works even with the onset of nausea / vomiting if you can keep it down.

I was on a 3 day out of San Diego last August. A guy riding solo bunked in our stateroom. We saw him for the galley meeting after we hit the bait docks at 9 p.m. and didn't see him out of his rack till late the second day. He was in bad, bad shape. He finally got the will to come topside on one of our troll stops and I offered him a pill. He took it and 30 minutes later he was eating a pork loin dinner with all the fixins. I doped several others who were in nearly the same condition on that trip. All were success stories and I could have sold this stuff for $200 a dose on that trip! LOL!

This stuff is awesome and with my Doc, all I had to do was call them and they arranged the perscription.

I have used Meclizine for years and it works really well. I checked the drug information on it and it isn't recommended for children younger than 12 years of age though.
<http://www.drugs.com/cdi/meclizine.html>

Marezine is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 6 years of age without checking with your doctor. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.

I'll second Marks comments on Marezine, have used it for years, in fact now only 1/2 tab works all day for me. Also know other folks when nothing else works it was just the ticket. It can be hard to find; last batch I got had to have pharmacy order. It also makes me much less drowsy than dramamine original, and know others with same experience. Worth a try for those looking for alternatives. Cloud out

For those that need something for sea sickness, this is what we ended up getting for my fishing partner. He was sick for 2 years but kept at it. Product is called "Marezine". We got it at Longs drug but have seen it at Fair Oaks Pharmacy in Arroyo Grande too.
We tried patches, electric wrist bands, the works but nothing did the job. Finally found out about this and it did the job.

Max,
What can I say. This was a life experance for me, and I would be happy to extend a hand to anyone that needs it. I am honored to have been the one boat that was with you that day. Don't forget Ethan Errington, the one that actually grabed you hand and tended to your boat while in tow. We all know there are some grumpy guys out there but it could have been anyone from the area and they would have done the same. Its part of that unwritten, unspoken code of the fishermens law. With that said we had plans, I hope we can still dive the islands on June 26th and 27th. You can't leave the west coast on this bad song. The trip should be great. It's not called "Two Days of Carnage" for nothing. 30 guys on a dave boat with spear guns. Yaaaahhhh. You got my contact info keep in touch.

Max it's Ray the guy that was right behind you at the launch and helped get your boat outa the slings. Very glad to hear you made it outa there alive--this record cold water could have had far worse results had your buddy not been right there. A close call indeed. Yes I know how we get attached to our boats but at least your still have the one thing most important.

Safety safety safety safety. I think its a reminder for all of us that love the big blue to check and recheck everything. *Often*. I know I am.

Steve--I have tried ginger myself and while it did lessen the nausea I don't think it would stop a case of green face once started. I have two of the "Relief" wrist bands but trying to keep one of those on a 20 month old......herding cats is easier (and possibly more fun). I'll check with my Doc, but maybe the bay will be our destination till the tyke gets a lil older and can take one of the std remedies. Thanks for the suggestions. Cloud out

Fished out of MB this morning for a real slow pick on the rockfish and short lings. The wind was already kicking in when we left the harbor at 7:00 and headed to the north end of the bay.The water was 49.5 and green. My buddy got 2 short lings and a couple gophers, while I managed 2 reds and a gopher. The fish really did not want to bite jigs, swimbaits, or squid(shallow or deep)...Talked to Charlie on the Admiral at about 9:30.They were fishing the deeper water off the Abalone Farm, but also had just a couple fish after several drifts (with 37 passengers).A very relaxing but largely fishless Father's Day.....Jeff

Just thought I would spice it up a lil....
Had a small plume of 61 degree water hit the donut and 1908 last week. Watch out for a bigger push by this weekend. And if so, A buddy and I are thinking about going looking for the elusive longfin tuna (AKA) Fat Albert. We are thinking of the 22 of June or the 28th. San Diego has been a miss so far and maybe they are are due for a year like 1992 and 93. Its got us interested, and its closer than running to San Diego and then 80+ miles on the water and possibly end up with the same results. At least the drive home is closer.

I guess if you get out on the water enough in a lifetime something like this will happen eventually no matter how prepared we think we are. I am honored you think I was a part of your good fortune and that I could lead you to this chat board. There are some really cool cats here who would give you the shirt off their back.... The Yak Pack headed out of Spooner's Cove early Saturday Morning at the crack of dawn. We had the pleasure of fishing with 2 new Pack members Bobby and John. The bite was off in Estero Bay, but I think we did better than some boaters though. The 6 of us caught a ton of Gophers, some Blacks, a few short Lings, a Canary, a Brown and a Black & Yellow. The water was 54 degrees and a little bumpy, very dirty and the fog never lifted, but all in all it was another great trip.

Warming—lengthy rant follows.

Modern-day “environmentalism” began in the late 1960s on the heals of the “free speech” and “peace” movements. The public education system, from grade school through the universities, has evolved from science-based presentation of the issues to what now has to be considered as indoctrination based on emotional arguments. The current teachers/professors are products of this educational system. Additionally, they are mostly liberals.

At the same time, government (all forms and levels) has expanded and continues to expand. Just look at what’s happened at the Federal level during the G. W. Bush administration and remember that he began his first term with a Republican House AND Senate. The size and expenditures of government will likely accelerate with the upcoming takeover of Congress and the Presidency by Democrats. In CA, a similar thing has happened during the Schwarzenegger administration; the guy who campaigned holding a broom that he was going to use to clean up Sacramento government and politics. Again, the size of government and expenditures has rapidly expanded under his watch and an even bigger government type (Newsom or Villaraigosa) will likely be the new governor.

It’s not surprising that regulation has grown as government has expanded. Regulators are going to regulate; that’s their job. The products of our environmental/liberal educational system began taking over the regulator roles in the late 1970s and now are fully in power. The current university graduates are even more biased and less science-based than those regulators now in power—witness the popularity of the anthropomorphic global warming movement. Carbon dioxide has been demonized, scientific discussion of its role is stifled; good scientists are labeled “GW deniers.” Have you ever heard Al Gore debate the issue? No. We have a top Federal “scientist” (James Hansen) writing foreign heads of state imploring them to eliminate coal-burning power plants—a freaking SCIENTIST on our payroll views this advocacy as appropriate. If CO2 is such an evil, why don’t these Gore disciples advocate nuclear power (NO CO2 produced)? Why don’t they EVER talk about benefits of higher atmospheric CO2? Why do you never hear about the FACE (Free Atmosphere Carbon Exchange) experiments (field studies on how crop production would be influenced)? Just one found that orange production would increase by 70% with a 300 ppm increase in atmospheric CO2. (http://www.freshplaza.com/news_detail.asp?id=10232).

The reason is that CO2/GW, endangered fish or other species, is not the real issue, which is to increase state power/control. Just listen to Maxine Waters’ PUBLIC threat to nationalize the oil companies. Incredibly, not much made of this incredible statement by a member of the US CONGRESS. Americans are apparently too lazy/stupid/apathetic to be outraged. Her constituency will vote her into office again. Nationalize healthcare is a given under Obama. Additional evidence: Schwarzenegger’s plan to hire hundreds of CO2 police while CA has a $15 billion annual deficit; the CA Attorney General suing counties for their plans to BUILD ROADS without CO2 mitigation plans. Hardly a peep of criticism heard.

I vigorously applaud Mel, Steve, Darby and the others who have tried to do battle with the regulators. I can’t imagine a more frustrating experience. While I wish them well, I must conclude that until the public school system reverts to more science rather than emotion-based education and government is shrunk, more, rather than less, regulation is in the offing.

Wow Max...that is crazy. Any idea where the water came from? Glad you made it off the boat safely. Thanks for posting your story. It is a good reminder to all of us to be safe out there.
Ray, Have you tried ginger? If he is just getting a mildly upset stomach, that may do the trick. The patch behind the ear works great for folks, but not sure about for kids. They also have those wristbands, but I'm not sure if those really work. Bonine works good...it is non-drowsy (unlike dramamine).
Tim, Yea, Cecil actually mentioned that he sold that to you. Very cool guy. He's been fishing around here since the '60's! He also commercial fished for many years. He was definitely an idol growing up and he was kind enough to take me fishing many times, including for my first albacore when I was 15!
Hope all are safe out there.
later,
steve

A story about Fathers Day … Survival

I have been in California since November last year … came here to work for my company on the refurbishing Diablo Canyon Power plant … Against all advice, I pulled my 20 ft Sea Ray open bow here 2,800 miles from south Florida … because I love to fish, scuba and enjoy any body of water … and any chance to immerse myself in mother nature …

Got on Fish Reports postings totally by accident after buying some scuba gear from a fellow poster, Monte Schaller… As a total south east Florida fisherman. Everyone was so cool about letting me know local spots, baits and I received many invitations to join in with the locals … you guys are great.

I have gone out alone 5 or 6 times from Avila and had success with rock fish, lings and some fish I couldn’t identify even with my color charts … but they tasted great !! lol ... none the less, soaking up every minute, enjoying some excellent eating fish and Gods brutal beauty of this area …

Luke Neummann contacted me through email about joining him on scuba and fishing outings. We finally met face to face on this past Friday, on Luke’s urging, so he could show me the tackle needed for ball bouncing … I followed him to his house and he insisted on handing me, against my objections, hands full of lures, 3-way swivels and 3 pound balls necessary to have fishing success here …

Luke then called me and said he and his friends were going out of Avila Saturday 6 a.m. and asked me to fish alongside in my boat … we were going to Point Sal … I was a little late getting to port San Luis with my boat and headed out underway by 6:40 a.m. … Luke was 45 minutes ahead of me ... After fishing a half dozen times off shore alone, I was really looking forward to sharing time with a local, boat to boat …

I ran along the coast enjoying the crisp morning fog and watching the seals and wildlife … I caught up with Luke and his 2 friends around 7;15 – 7:30 … dropped lines and immediately started hitting fish … it was the start of a perfect morning … enjoying Gods’ mother nature, reaping harvest and enjoying a new buddy …

We pulled up and changed location by about 200 yards … in about 70 feet of water, right off Point Sal and the round rock island … maybe 600 yards off shore … I got on another fish and reeled it in … noticing the stern of my boat riding lower than normal … I glanced port side and saw my bilge was pumping full line of water out … and moved forward to crank the boat up and “pull-out” the water by moving forward …

In a matter of seconds, my motor was over run with water and I was going stern down quickly … I yelled over to Luke that I was taking on water … He rushed his boat over to me and in a matter of less than 30 seconds I was totally swamped … I tossed Luke a bow line as Luke was yelling “get out of there” … as I bailed portside, my 20 foot Sea Ray rolled over on top of me … for about 10 seconds I was trapped under the boat.

I swam out from under it and over to Lukes’ boat and quickly up on the swim platform … As we held onto my capsized boat, floating bow up … I was shocked watching my baby, a 1975 boat I rescued from literally the garbage pile in South Florida …. Shivering and soaked, Luke and his buddy’s gave me their own clothes to get warm …

I spent the next 2 hours begging and pleading with the Coast Guard, Sea Tow and my insurance company to get some help … Everyone, for stated one policy reason or another, refused assistance … Since I was safely on board another vessel, Coast Guard was not able to “risk craft and personnel” … Since I was capsized, Sea Tow doesn’t include “salvage” … the one vessel recovery company I did speak with quoted a minimum of $15,000 to rescue my boat …

We attempted to tow my boat upside down with Lukes Bay Liner … the drag was simply too much to overcome … especially with a T-top on the inverted hull adding drag … after an hour we had made less than a mile back towards Avila … After Progressive Insurance assuring me that I was totally covered for the boat, gear and all electronics … and it was now 11:00 am and at best it would take another 12 hours to get back to port … not sure if we had fuel and weather to support such an effort … I could not risk any further the lives and vessel of the others … I was forced to cut the tow line and abandon my boat …

After numerous phone calls I was notified I am liable for any and all damage my boat may cause … the fuel on board, the clean up of the wreck and the damage to others if they hit my semi submerged boat … yet no one would come to assist … a sobering revelation at best

Luke saved my life … its that simple … by extending his hand of friendship and inclusion … I was not fishing alone as I normally do … Had I been, I may not be enjoying the blessings of this fathers day …

Thank you … Fish Reports … Monte Schaller … and a guy that the good Lord put in my life less than 24 hours before … I simply owe my life to Luke Nuemann

I am being transferred out of California within 2 weeks to my next assignment … needless to say … I will never forget this area, all of your friendships, this fathers day … God Bless everyone … enjoy your sammich “)

Joy Lyn Fish Report for Saturday 6/14 PSL

1st we tried going up to Rosa to see if Grandson had the non-seasick gene my Dad had--no such luck so right back inside we went.

Caught 5 very nice (IMHO) Bolina (apx. 4-6 lbs each) fishing for Hali off Pirates. All on Gulp 6" white grub/2 oz. leadhead. "Gulp!" baits rock when live not available (thanks again Deke n crew for givin' it a try).

Another priceless day on the water with Daughter, Wife, Grandson. Gonna have to check into anti-motion sickness remedy for toddlers. He's 20 months/28 lbs. Suggestions? I will of course be checking with Doc but am interested to hear of others experiences with this (if any). This 20-month old kid has already figured out the gearshift and "go"; loves boat and helps Poppi steer, so am really looking forward to getting him to some better "catching" opportunities.

Steve--congrats on the successful Purisma trip. Would like to buddy boat there sometime. Sorry to hear about the Sal accident. I recently went back through my emergency gear and found a few deficiencies to correct--and I know better. Hope others see the safety message in this and take appropriate action(s).

Cloud out

We fished out of PSL today. Marty opened at 5:45am. We went uphill towards Diablo, shallow and deep for 6 fish for 2 people. Nothing we put out seemed to work. Wind was up early and a little chop. Water temp was around 54. Very few fish on the meter and no bait.

we had a great bite on reds this morning down at hazards. we left them biting as the kids were a bit uncomfortable with the wind chop. ran up to cayucos to drift for flatties with frozens and plastics for nada then bounce balled our way back to morro for several more rockfish and a decent ling but no halibut.
happy fathers day to all the dads!!

Greetings,
We headed down to Purisma in the Avocation. There was a little wind chop in the morning that never laid down:-( Fast drift, but a very good bite on bolina, a few reds, a couple of bocaccio, and 8 keeper lings. Released one monster ling about 34"! Limits by 11 a.m. But a slow ride home with a nasty wind chop. Definitely blowing harder than the 10 knots that were forecasted:-(( Great day on the water with my pa and his buddy, an old salt, Cecil (aka Henry) Friesen. Cecil caught the big ling...again!
Saw a capsized boat off of Pt. Sal. Apparently someone's boat took on water and sunk very fast...fortunately there was another boat nearby which rescued everyone. Kinda creepy to come across because we didn't hear much on the radio.
Hope the wind come down again soon!!!
best fishes,
steve

Today the rockfish were off the bite. We first traveled to the abalone farm, and like the other several boats up there we caught nothing, not a bite. So at 10:00 we moved to Hazard and fished until 1:15 for a total of 3 rockfish between three of us. Other boats were not so lucky.

Will, thanks for the ride this morning. Caught a dozen misc smelt and perch and used them for live bait. Caught one short, lost another bigger fish, and landed a 17# flattie on one of the perch baits. Fished just outside the entrance to Morro.

If anybody in the north county is looking for swim baits or heads I am now stocking baits from kustom kraft as well as big hammer at the Boat Doc 434-3700.I know this board is supposed to be for fishing reports, but maybe some one can save some gas if they live in the north county. Thanks, Mark

Friends:

FIRST: The vote went as expected Friday afternoon. We will have groundfish seasons in 2009 and 2010 of May 1 to November 15.

SECOND: The blue rockfish issue is very complicated. I am going to say a few words here about it ... and then I am going to do some research about what we can do to ameliorate the situation.

Blue rockfish is a species that is protected under both the Magnuson-Stephens Act (Federal Law) and the Nearshore Fisheries Management Plan (State Law). There has never been a previous blue rockfish stock assessment. Everyone knew that blues were thick as fleas and there never was a concern about them being threatened or overfished. So ... when it came to calculating the "VIRGIN BIOMASS" figure, marine biologists had no baseline data. A lot of guesswork went into the project. This was also the first fish stock assessment EVER conducted by staff of CDFG. CDFG has always just piggy-backed on Federal fish stock assessments. The state had also sub-contracted out a few fish stock surveys. This was their first in-house fish stock assessment. It was a collossal mess. The stock assessment was completed last November. Then the "peer review" process started ... and most of the scientists from NOAA (Feds) said the model was done wrong and the conclusions were totally bogus. A big battle ensued over how the data should be plugged into the models and what model should be used. One well-respected marine biologist said the whole assessment should be scrapped. Under a couple of the "models" the conclusion was that the blue rockfish are in fine shape and not a concern. Under one "suspect" model it established a huge unreliable "virgin biomass" figure and the resulting stock assessment came in at 29.7% of virgin biomass. Under that model it would appear that blue rockfish were a concern.

Another factor is that blue rockfish are lumped in with other nearshore rockfish as one complex. When the complex is considered as a whole ... the complex is in fine shape. There is no problem.

Then, this whole circus was taken to the federal meeting in Foster City. All fish stock assessments are reviewed by a committee called the Science and Statistical Committee (SSC). This committee decided to drag the blue rockfish out of the nearshore complex so that it would stand alone. Then they decided to use the disfavored, suspect model that lead to a conclusion that blue rockfish are at 29.7% of virgin biomass. That means they are borderline to being considered overfished.

In spite of a full day of testimony by fishermen that the assessment was ridiculous, preposterous, unbelievable, and stupid ... the PFMC council went ahead and approved the SSC recommendation and the blue rockfish assessment.

Like I said above ... I will start investigating what we should do about the situation. I suggested to a key marine biologist that works for CDFG that we could avoid blues and lower the take of this species. She said that would guarantee that we would not come in above our quota for the next couple years (which is good), but it would then appear that the recreational take of blues has gone down ... and appear that indeed the blues are in decline.

It is a complex problem. It is hard to determine how to deal with voodoo science ...

I certainly will get back to you on a suggested course of action.

I have been told that we have a good new director of CDFG and maybe he has the courage to tell the feds to "stuff it." He may say there is plenty of evidence the blues are not in any problem ... and we can go ahead and catch as many as we want.

There is also the possibility that the CDFG could extend our seasons ... to give us more fishing later in the year. This is called an "in-season adjustment."

I will keep you posted on these developments.

I think the revised forcast looks good till MONDAY, so we better go now before the wind blows again, or they close the season cause we caught too many GOPHERS , Remember a few years ago when they were endangered. how did they repopulate so fast , just AMAZING , maybe the blues will do the same.

Deke has bait. 7" dines which worked great for us today. Caught 6 lings on them at point Sal. One nice thing about dines that size is that you will catch big fish.

The weather was great and should be tomorrow but it turns windy again sunday for another week !

WOW, just when I thought I had heard everything from the anti fishing crowd posing as govt. officials. Now the blue rockfish is endangered. un-f*%^ing believable. No Salmon season, dwindling rockfish season and most of the reef structure off limits. I sure hope for the sake of the commercial guys that we get some more of these pinko commie enviros in office say they can sell their boats and permits to the govt to feed their families. anyone have a good recipe for berkley gulp products. wondering if the taste okay battered and deep fried. Guess we will take advantage of sat/sun for a two day while we still can. Thanks to mel and all the others who went up there for the fight. Must be frustrating trying to reason with idiots.

Fished PSL in the skiff today. Tried to make our own bait with no luck. Sloppy confused seas and light N wind. Fished lures through the Pea Patch for no halibut, but a few rockfish and a 29" ling (all released).
Thinking of a Purisma run on Saturday. Anyone else game?
Stacey...get an outboard. Honda 4-stroke. We've had a lot more trouble with our inboard than I think we would have had with an outboard. What kind of boat?

A brief comment on the posting by Darby. I certainly believe that we are entitled to seven months in '09 and '10 ... but it isn't going to happen. Darby's analysis is correct, but we are not going to get that seven months because of the idiotic fish stock assessment on blue rockfish. If I thought that it would help to encourage you to drive up to Foster City to beg for additional time on the water, I certainly would be begging you to make the trip. Darby missed the negotiations this afternoon where we almost lost half a month in May. That would have been disaterous. I think we will have to live with 6 1/2 months for a couple years.

Friends: It was almost a certainty that we would lose 1/2 of May and 1/2 of November for the upcoming 2009 and 2010 seasons. We did some begging and pleading with commercial live-fishing guys to give up some of their blue rockfish allotment ... and they finally agreed. Thanks to the commercial guys ... it is now 98% certain we will have rockfish seasons starting on May 1 and ending on November 15. Of all the regions of the state north of Pt. Conception ... we have retained the biggest part of our current season.

Steve and I will stay until tomorrow to make sure the vote goes down smoothly ... but it looks like we will do "okay".

Just got back from the PFMC meeting. If anyone can get away we sure could use your support for the 2009-10 seasons by addressing the council in the morning. The blue rockfish restrictions are ridiculous and EVERYONE KNOWS IT but that is the restraint we have to work inside of so let’s move on. There is a proposal that the council preliminarily approved on Tuesday, “Alternative 6” that give us seven months, the same as this year for the next two. I am trying to be brief so here’s a simplified explanation of what was going on when I left.

The coast is broken into regions and in this case a blue rockfish quota is allocated to each region mostly based on historical catch. The Half Moon Bay and Bay Area region have around 50 charter boats (and much more private boat pressure) in roughly 100 miles of coastline. Even though their region was allocated about the same amount of blue rockfish as ours they are projected to catch that in four months.

Our region, Monterey Bay, Morro Bay and Avila has 12 charter boats (13 if I get the Pathfinder back)in around 200 miles of coastline. Regional management or common sense would say then that our region should get allocated twice as much of the quota because we have twice the habitat and because we have less pressure it should take longer for us to catch our allocation. But the DFG also tries to consider financial impact and with historical catch that's what we got.

However, the guys from Half Moon Bay, also representing the Bay Area are fuming because they only got four months in this proposal and we got seven. (Never mind Southern Ca. still gets a 10 month season) What’s even more irritating to me is that the Half Moon Bay guys are travelling below the line to fish in Monterey when we are open and they are closed. This goes against our allocation also! It’s a sad day when we have to fight our own guys to go fishing and feel blessed to get a 7 month season.

If you can, get up there Friday morning to support Steve and Mel and tell them not to settle for less than what the council has suggested for us, 7 months! Here’s directions and an agenda.

Thanks so much Mel for the fight. For the rest of you, if you didn`t notice the Sierra Club just took over our county with the defeat of Jerry and the re election of Patterson. The Christies were behind both candidates. More restrictions in every part of our life are on the way. Welcome to San Luis Ochristie.

UPDATE FROM FOSTER CITY:

Darby & Steve and I went over to the PFMC meeting at 7 a.m. this morning with high hopes of getting our seven months season for 2009-2010 locked in ... and everything has turn SOUR!

The alternative suggested by CDFG to the feds would have given us a 7 months season just like we currently have ... but would have cut two months off of the season for SF Bay area. The guys from the SF area spent their evening yesterday lobbying CDFG and have been squawking all morning that they need more months fishing. They are trying to take away May and November from our annual season.

Darby gave his speach to the council arguing for our 7-month season. He has to leave today for a graduation back in MB. Steve and I are going to stick around and keep fighting. Right now it looks bleak for getting our 7-month season. The big problem is that our region has only two ports and only two sportfishing businesses. We have less clout than the region which includes SF Bay. They also have many more recreational skiff fishermen. Another option on the table would have us getting 6 1/2 months ... which would be from May 1 to November 15.

I will get back to you this evening. I had planned to return to SLO today ... but will wait until tomorrow since the "marbles are still on the table."

Q: How many environmentalists does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: One to write a paper claiming that light is a pig whitey invention, one to
organize a Darkness Studies program, and one hundred to protest the Diablo
Canyon Nuclear Generating Station.

Friends: All the outrage you feel about a preposterous claim that "blue rockfish" are in trouble is shared by everyone here at Foster City. It is outrageous and even the staff at CDFG agrees. But ... we have to deal with the fact that the Feds have accepted this fish stock assessment and will be making regulations based on it. We will live with this mistake for many years. Sometimes the government is "laughable." These people are similar to the dolts we have in Congress.

As of 8:30 p.m. tonight we still don't have any word on whether we are going to get our "status quo" 7 months yet. I will report back to you tomorrow.

What time of the year did they study the blues?
Because when the water temp goes up, just dropping a 6 oz. sinker you could "endanger" four or five Blues before you even hit the bottom at 50 ft. This shows how much they know!
