Kids at Sea

The first trip for this year was great. There were 21 kids aboard and 11 adults including crew. We took about an hour in the bay. Sharon (my mom) gave a good narration of wildlife, boats, businesses, nature, and fishing stories. The forecast was for strong afternoon winds and 5-7 ft. swells. We crossed our fingers, checked our safety equipment and went for it. It was flat and glassy. We fished above 10E for lots of bolinas, blacks, blues, reds, and gophers. The wind started about 1130, right when it was time to go in. Each passenger caught at least three fish, with the highliners catching 8-9 fish (in 2 1/2 hours). A humpback decided to hang out wiht us for the majority of the trip and do acrobatics. The 4 ft. fishing rods with the shimano TR 200 level wind were perfect. Every child, even a 6 year-old girl, left the vessel knowing how to use their equipment without getting a backlash, or their fingers caught in the level wind, or a hook in anywhere except the fish. It is amazing how quickly the the kids learned to fish with one-on-one attention. If you ever take a kid to teach them how to fish, my number one suggestion is to leave your rod at home. Thanks to everyone who supported this program.

Central California Joint Cable/Fisheries Commitetee has granted Kids at Sea 2,700.00

The Next trip is full, but needs a few more volunteers. It is on July 3, 2008.

The next trip that has openings for kids is on July 29, 2008.

Will and Dave,I'm glad you could "relate" to my corbina experience. The fish were so thick ,you could see them swarming in the 6"-12" deep water as each wave receeded. As an experiment I tossed my hooked sandcrab onto the wet sand just shy of the water's edge.On the next incoming wave my bait got inhaled almost at my feet and the line started ripping off the reel as I set the hook on a fish I was literally staring at.Pound for pound they are as tough as any bonefish I've caught, and not nearly as skittish...To answer Mike B's question, they are much better eating than surfperch, but a little more bony....jeff

Mike, for rod repair I have been using Ron Baima dba Baima's Tackle. He works out of his house in Templeton, but manages the Chevron Station/Mini Mart at Las Tablas Rd. exit and Hwy 101.I always reach him through the station as the guy is a workaholic.Ron fixed a few guides for me on my tuna sticks and re-wrapped a couple Truline rods for me.He did an excellent job matching the thread color and wrap style on the repairs and was reasonable for parts and labor...jeff

Like Will I grew up on Corbina. I fished San Clemente beaches and Newport bay for them. I used to sight fish them at San Clemente with 2# test. Hooked a lot, lost a lot but caught plenty. I`ve seen them rolling in the surf at Pismo pier during one of the El Ninos. You had an epic day brings back memories.

Is there anyone in the south county that does a good job rewraping fishing poles? I have 2 that need some work. I also have a reel or two that could use some attention. Thanks

Jeff,
I grew up catching corbina in Pacific Palisades; many fond memories of epic days. I have seen them in the sandy bays of the Hollister Ranch in pretty good numbers, but never above Point Conception. Maybe, with global warming, we will get them up here!(along with lobsters and yellowtail)

For you surf fishing enthusiasts I just got back from a few days of business down in Laguna.I fished the beaches of south Laguna every morning and evening for what can only be described as WFO corbina fishing. The beaches were loaded with thumbnail sized soft shell sandcrabs.I fished straight sandcrabs on "trout gear" of #6 lb test with a 1/2 oz slider and a small hook. The tide did not seem matter and almost every bait resulted in a hookup with a #3-#7 lb corbina.I also lost some bigger fish due to breakoffs.I have caught corbina before but never this quantity or consistent quality.Does anyone ever see them up here?...jeff

Most definitely use a trap rig. 90%+ of my fish come on the treble. Amazingly you will still miss with the trap rig.
This sounds like a lame answer...but there is good halibut fishing anywhere there is sand. I've caught halibut from bird sh@t rock all the way to the Pea Patch (which is N of the lighthouse about 2 miles). Get some live bait and set up some drifts. Be patient but focused. A good day of halibut fishing is a couple of keepers!
Good luck and post a report.
lat,
steve

Fished the pea patch this moarning with some of Dekes 7 to 8" dines. Cought A couple nice lings, a nice cabbie and lost a really nice flattie on a drift at pirates cove in about 30 ft. of water. Lots of raked bait at the Pea Patch, but couldent boat any halibut. I was giving them about an eight count on the clicker. Should I have weighted longer, or should I have been using a Trap Rig?

Will, Jamie wanted me to thank you for the graduation rod and reel setup. He had alot of fun with it today.

Chip / Tim,
A good friend of mine named Sam is the son of the owner of Evergreen, and we hit the fresh water when the ocean is closed. Evergreen charters Virges in mb every year and invites alot of us tree guys. The whole boat is paid for and full of just tree guys. I'll check to see if i can get you guys on the trip this year if there is one, as you know work has been slow this year.

Bob,
Saturday was wide open for my mom south and for me north. When there is no drift, you catch what is hungry and then you have to move. Also, it is easy to miss the spot if you don't set up in the center of it. No drift can be the hardest type of fishing sometimes.

Hello Everyone, Just returned from a 3-day trip to San Diego. Stayed at Campland in Mission Bay and fished Friday and Saturday. No love on Friday as we ran to the Coronados looking for YT, fished multiple paddies and the islands for nada.

Saturday we ran SW about 35 miles to the 371 spot, hit fog bank about a mile short of the 371, clear to the NW so we put in and trolled to the 230 spot - water was 64.6 degrees. After about 1 mile water temp at 65.5 and a short while later (9:30 am) had a double on a purple cedar and purple feather. Ended up being 10 and 11# albies. Boxed the area for no futher action. Heard lots of radio fish in the area with reports of albies to 20+ lbs along with some BFT being caught. Water temp at 68 by afternoon. Stopped at multiple paddies, no body home.

I haven't been to SD in 20+ years but man is the ocean nice down there. Beautiful weather, long swells and calm seas both days.

As soon as they get in range up here if anyone wants to run let us know.
Bert

Fished the north end of Estero bay on saturday morning before the wind came up.We fished off of the Killers buoy for a good pick on the rockfish plus 1 short(25")WSB,and one approx. #40lb halibut lost at the gaff due to my error(never let the gaff touch the line). We had live `dines from Virg`s plus a few pounds of fresh dead squid...The squid outfished the live bait....jeff

That water is also really clean at the 1908, in fact it is clean at the donut with 60 degree temps. It will certainly be worth checking in next weather window!
Commercial reports of LFT 300 miles west of Crescent City. The SST contour charts favor Oregon again this year. Time wil tell !!

That warm edge has pushed in past the 1908 and is almost at the escarpment. Heading in the right direction and is now about 65 nm from MB. Hopefully it will keep coming despite the wind over the next few days.

Harrell,
Yea, I was giving them a good 10 count. Most were way down in the mouth...although we did miss a few.
Saw that they are getting some good numbers of albacore out of SD on their 2 day boats. What do you think of that plume off the 1908? Temps are there and the color looks good!
Hope the wind blows enough to at least cool it down around here a little!!!
later,
steve

I don't know why we are not catching rockfish. We fished 5 hours for three fish, two reds and a copper off of Hasard. We fished from 240 feet to 20 feet. I heard yesterday was very good for rockfish. Today though there was absolutley no drift.

Greetings,
Fished PSL in the mini today...good thing because the launch was still broken this morning. Not sure when they got it fixed, but there definitely weren't many people on the water today! They were slinging when I left at 2 pm.
Wow....what a day on the water. Got a sweet scoop of perfect 6-7" dines from Deke and headed up to the Pea Patch nearly at full throttle (almost 20 mph for the mini).
Got a 'but on the first drift...23" keeper. Worked that area for 3 more keepers and 2 more shorts. Moved over a little for 2 more keepers and several more raked baits. So that's 6 keepers in one day!!! A new boat record. 4 were around 23", 1 was 28" and 1 was 30". Great day on the water. Glassy and HOT until noon when the wind picked up fast and was blowing 15+ by the time we rounded the breakwater. It was like an oven in Avila!
Anyhow, the halibut are in. Most fish were caught in 45-55' of water, but a couple were in a little shallower. Also caught a 28" ling and a nice cab. Great day on the water:-)
Hope someone gets out there tomorrow. They were on the chew.
best fishes,
steve

Champion 582,

If you hadnt heard of this may I humbly recommend checking the official Lopez website (SLO County Parks). Lopez does a very serious inspection of all boats due to Quagga mussel invasion threat. I saw many turned away last time I was there. If you need any further help locating info just let me know and I'd be glad to help. Then again may be a good excuse to go Salt water instead.

For Hali and rockfish "inside" at PSL, live bait is of course our 1st choice but if not available we did OK with the Berkely gulp 5" white curl-tail grub on 2 oz leadhead...report should be below or in last archive. The sides of kelp beds or alleys in between have always worked best for us. Right off Pirates cove beach (next beach down from Avila) is where we got our 1st hali of season about 20 ft water. Not to far from Port and is kinda protected from wind. There are a number of boiler rocks to look out for. Guluck to you, Cloud out

It's late and I tried to post from my PDA earlier tonight while at Fat Cat's and that failed but if anyone is headed out to PSL to launch in the a.m., you might give them a call before heading out there. I saw the cables were broken on the hoist. Word was that they would have a crew to fix it before launch time tomorrow which would be great.

Just an FYI...

The Perfect Heat Storm, the latest hot-weather update from John Lindsey
PG&E DCPP Atmospheric UPDATE for Friday 06/20/08

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:

Record-breaking temperatures have developed on the ocean side of
the Cuesta Grade today.

Several factors have produced this record breaking condition:

1) A mesoscale high pressure system parked in place just east of
San Luis Obispo combined with a warm upper-atmosphere high
pressure ridge over California.

2) Persistent northeasterly (offshore) winds descending the
Cuesta Grade and producing compressive heating.

3) Very warm overnight lows which is not allowing the atmosphere
to cool, but to gradually warm over the last 72 hours.

4) The longest days of the year, with plenty of sunshine.

Temperatures in degrees F as of 1500 this afternoon.

Tree Doc,
I was going to ask, why you call yourself the Tree Doc? I'm the owner of Neumann & Sons Tree Service, and wondered if you are in the same business? If so where do you work north or south county? I do most of my work in the north county and was looking to have someone to refer for the south county work, beacuse fuel cost to much to run around the whole county. Yes your right, its very important to inform everyone. We did call the Coast Guard, and they refused to help. Since everyone was safe the coast guard simply said sorry, but have a nice day. The coast guard has the lon/lat of our postion when we cut the boat lose. Someone told me they heard the coast guard announce info over the radio. What they said I don't know.

Campion582,
Food for thought, you might consider Port San Luis as your launch point in the a.m. You would have to put your boat in on the hoist, $18-$20, but you could easily stay in the lee of the breakwater all the way down to Shell Beach. Halibut and Rockfish are good possibilities there. There have been some good days yeilding some nice Bolina near Pirates Cove as well as Halibut. If the wind kicks up, you're still close to Port for a quick exit.

In case your not completely familiar, make sure you study the DFG Regs 'cuz it's likely you will get checked.

Thanks Steve, I have been watching that water SW of us for weeks and it is looking good plus that one report of it holding tuna. In June 2003 we caught tuna at 50/50 off Purisima in 59/60 degree water.
Here is John's (PG&E) latest wind forecast
This morning's northeasterly (offshore) winds will shift
out of the northwest (onshore) to moderate to fresh (13-24 mph)
levels this afternoon.

Fresh to strong (19-31 mph) northwesterly winds are forecast on Saturday
afternoon through Sunday, further increasing to strong to moderate gale
force (25-38 mph) levels on Monday through Thursday.

The northwesterly winds will be decrease next Friday.

Jeff;
What kind of a boat do you have? We all wish you good luck if you go !

john if you stay in the breakwater you wont be getting many rockfish. if you target halibut it is best to get live bait(throw net, sabiki) if you cant you can use dead salted anchovy and drift the bay(low going high). good luck and dont worry about the jettys just respect them and the ocean.

Hello. I am new to this forum and I have learned a lot already from reading the posts here. I am going to be on vacation at Lopez Lake from July 4 - July 21. I am bringing my boat to do some fresh water and salt water fishing in the area. I would like to fish in the Morro Bay area and would like some advice about where to try. I have a 21' Campion CC with a 150 Merc OB. I see that rock fish seem to be on the bite now, and possibly halibut. My wife is a bit nervous about the ocean, so I plan on staying inside the breakwater. Anyone have any suggestions about where I should go? Maybe GPS coordinates I could use? Or maybe another site I could go to for this info? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, John

Harrell,
We saw his boat @ noon and it was a few hundreds yards inside (SE) of that big lump that forms off the point. It kinda freaked us out at first...we thought someone may have gotten too close to that lump and it capsized them. We called the Coast Guard and they informed us that it had already been called in and that all aboard were safe.
Wow...have you guys seen that warm plume off the 1908?
later,
steve

I'm sure tensions were high after that capsize event and it is easily overlooked but it is always a good idea to notify the Coast Guard of the current position of capsized vessels or other Hazards to Navigation. These positions will be broadcast periodically on Channel 16 with a Notice to Mariners. Not only would this possibly prevent another vessel from running into the capsized vessel but it could prevent a search by the Coast Guard and other agencies if someone were to come across the vessel without realizing all persons are safe.

I've experienced this situation several times when active in So Cal's USCGAux as well as when I was involved in Aviation ASW in the Navy. Many complex searches are activated to the cost of serious dollars and risk to lives when the boaters were otherwise safe. It just takes a minute on the radio.

Harrell,
No I did'nt log the info. What I remember is we were just off the point, in shallow about 70-80ft of water. The best I could give you is 34 53.00 North and 120 40.00 West. I don't know where the boat is now, just on the beach at or near V.A.F.B. One thing I thought was going to happen, is it looked like the boat was going to hit the wash rocks off the point for sure, but the current must have held it just outside.

Hola Everyone, I received this email and thought some of you might be interested. Paul Boe

Happy summer to all of the Collaborative Fisheries Project volunteer anglers!
I'm pleased to inform you that we're beginning the second field season of our nearshore fishing surveys with the addition of another MPA into our sample. Along with continuing to monitor the Point Buchon MPA and reference sites, we'll be covering the Piedras Blancas MPA this year (as well as a reference site)!! The protocol is the same as last season with a few points tightened up a bit. All trips going to Piedras will leave from Virg's and all trips to Point Buchon will leave from Patriot SF. I decided to change the Patriot departure time to 7 AM and the Virg's trips will leave at 6 AM since it's quite a longer steam to Piedras. Last season there were 12 exciting trips to be a part of and this year we'll be running 24!! So, there's plenty of opportunity for everyone to be involved in the research as your lives and schedules permit. Please pass this message along to your friends/fishing comrades and sign up for as many trips as you please. I'll be doing the same system of email reminders and calls before your trip leaves so we can be sure to have the angler crews we need out there to collect data. The Cal Poly fisheries folks are very excited to continue with our project and to reconnect with all of you essential volunteer anglers! The schedule is as follows:
JULY:
Virg's: 15, 16, 22, 23
Patriot: 17, 21, 28, 29
AUGUST:
Patriot: 11, 18, 25, 26
Virg's: 12, 13, 19, 20
SEPTEMBER:
Virg's: 2, 3, 16, 17
Patriot: 8, 9, 10, 11
Feel free to respond to me at this hotmail address; I also use llongaba@calpoly.edu but I know that doesn't work with some of your servers. I'm going to use my office number as my contact for the time being: 805-756-2950 and I'll always respond to any voice mails left there. Thanks so much for considering joining us again in Cal Poly and Moss Landing's Collaborative Fisheries Research Project. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

This coming Sunday evening, June 22, CBS News 60 MINUTES will
feature an expose on the severely depressed salmon populations
in the Columbia & Snake Rivers. The story will spotlight the
tremendous amount of taxpayer dollars our federal government
continues to spend on ineffective programs that are failing to
restore an endangered national treasure - wild salmon of the
Columbia and Snake Rivers.

The story will raise serious questions about the billions of
taxpayer dollars the government has spent - and wants to keep
spending into the future - on salmon programs that aren't
working, and scientists tell us are extremely unlikely ever to
work.

Please tune in, as this story shines a bright light to a
national audience on the federal government's taxpayer-financed
failure to protect and restore wild salmon and steelhead to the
rivers of America's Pacific Northwest.

After getting info from other sources, it seem that the longfin are split into 2 arteries. Tommy, (aka, MV Santa Rosa on another site)is well respected and a wealth of info. One area is coming in high and still out at 100 + from San Diego but slowly moving in closer as they move north. Looks like 1908 hit 61 degrees today. Anyway things are looking good and we have caugh many albacore in 58-59 degree water and caught them here in early June before so we shall see.

Big Sturgeon on the columbia river - Brian Boatman and I just got back from fishing over-sized sturgeon in oregon. Had a great trip, catching 3 of the 5 we hooked the first day, and 4 of the 6 we got the second day. Brian lost a huge one after a half hour battle, with the fish towing the boat back up river, and then breaking the spectra on some rocks on the bottom. This was two great days of fishing, with lots of bites all day both days. Got to the spot by 7am the 2nd day and had a 106" 300 # fish by 7:30. Our small one was 96" and about 250#, and the biggest was 115" and over 400#'s. Most of the fish were right at 9' and 300#'s plus this year - all very big fish. Guide was great, he really goes the extra mile to get you on big fish, and fished late both days due to a good afternoon bite. We fished 12-18" shad, with a 12/0 hook, so there's no little fish, only huge slugs. All the fish jumped one to three times, and hurt you bad. Got to love those big ugly dino's - kiss and release. Anybody want some info on a really good guide, let me know. Fishing is good until oct.

Hey Antikbuff, great comment : "Great planning or totally stupid... ?" for someone who admits they heard it "2nd hand". What if your source was "BS", you just did a pretty good job of calling someone out without the facts. These boards are an easy way to make an idiot of oneself when we personally attack somebody without the facts. I don't know anything about what happened to the boat and don't really care, if he made an error it was a costly one, if he didn't, I think you might owe someone an apolgy.

Gary, great news ! In a couple of weeks they could well be at the donut. 1908 is a little bit out of my range but will do the donut on a good weather day.

Luke; A couple of questions on Max's boat:
Did you log the Lat/Lon where you cut it loose and do you know about where on VAFB it hit the beach ? Would like to chart it just for ref.

Tincan,I probably would recognize him. I seldom use the gate, but drive my pontoon to work. This is my 3rd season there.
