Fished the north end of the bay today just outside the green "killers" buoy...The lingcod fishing was absolutely wide open on swimbaits in 50-55ft..I had 17 lings in about 2 1/2 hours...At least half of them were keepers.I kept a pair of 28" inchers for the grill, and left the rest of them for next week.Almost every ling coughed up an octopus, which may explain why they bit so well on the white swimbaits with 2oz red leadheads.Weather was awesome....jeff |

Dingus look at the mouth of a thresher, they don`t eat anything but bait fish. There are plenty of them around here actually not that many caught. Don`t worry about it. Capt Dave |

Not to add more fuel to the fire but I think it is important to release the sharks too. Probably my favorite catch of all and no doubt a delicious meal.... but so slow to reproduce I think the sharks deserve the chance to give another angler a great battle in the future. We all knows "threshers" dont eat sealions around here, but they are an important part of our food chain and if anything maybe you could cut them a break based on them being such amazing predators. Gotta respect that. It's good juju too if you ever fall in the water ;) I will however punch a tuna in its big dumb head. |

we had thresher shark for dinner tonight, mainated in teriyaki. It was delicious. Too bad that the cattle of sea (sealions) don't make good patties. I raised a calf once and I adored it, it was the cutest thing, but I still love cheeseburgers. sharon |

Fisherman and Hunters put more money and time into conserving the wildlife every year than most enviros do in a lifetime. Sportsmen also know what is really going on out in the field. It makes me mad to hear people try and regulate our fisheries without any knowledge of what they are talking about. Over regulation ends up causing more problems than it solves. I bet these MPA's are going to come back and bite them in the ass too. Going out on the Cal Poly boat on Tuesday and hopefully catch some of those monster Lings the state is breading. |

there have been all kind of sharks here since I was a little boy sea lions and seals too but not thousands of them the elephant seals were non existent they started out with just a few and look at it now!! otters, they followed the food chain south instead of north thats why you can still go up to Bragg and get abalonies, the otters down here have destroyed the abs and pismo clams forever I will always have the memories but my grandson won't |

I didn’t want to be the first to jump on this one so glad you did. What makes the greenies so hard to deal with is ridiculous statements like “stop taking threshers to naturally control seals”. Most of us consider ourselves conservationist and would go to extreme lengths to protect our fishery but hate to side with the extremists for that very reason. Some years ago while I was involved with the PFMC there was a Highly Migratory Species (HMS) subcommittee formed. The study we reviewed showed that fishing accounted for only 2% of all albacore mortality. While that is hard to believe, it also shows how big the ocean really is and how small we think. (Or how big we think we are.) Still we supported a 10 fish sport limit on albacore because that’s a lot of fish for any one person! We don’t want fish going to waste and a limit shows we do want to be conservative. I cannot find that study but perhaps someone who has time can look around. All the PFMC documents and studies get posted. It would be interesting to have. |

william, there's nothing wrong with taking 30 or 40 albacore when you got 3 or 4 guys on your boat. knowing you might get only one shot at the albacore especially out of morro bay in recent years, i say grab a limit whenever you can! |

Thresher's diet; Prey items from California and other waters include anchovy, Pacific sardine, herring, mackerel, Pacific hake, lancetfish, lanternfishes, Pacific salmon, squids, octopus, pelagic red crab, and shrimp. Preliminary results of a recent food habit study of samples collected during the warm-water period of 1998 from the CA/OR drift gill net fishery, has revealed a varied diet of primarily anchovy, sardine, Pacific hake, Pacific mackerel, jack mackerel, shortbelly rockfish, and market squid; and secondarily, grunion and other atherinids, louvar, white croaker, queenfish, Pacific sanddab and pelagic red crab. Thresher sharks have been observed to use their long caudal fin to bunch up, disorient and stun prey at or near the surface and are often caught on longlines tailhooked. |

Just FYI here is the Thresher’s diet from 6 different sources. Seems like we should be more worried about the thresher taking our bait than the seals! As far as the Enviro’s......The day I let an Enviro curb my freedom of speech and civil liberties is the day I take it in the a** from one of them! Just my three cents..... Thresher shark 1. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Diet Pelagic schooling fish (such as bluefish, juvenile tuna, and mackerel), squid and cuttlefish are the primary food items of the thresher sharks. They are known to follow large schools of fish into shallow waters. Crustaceans and the odd seabird are also taken. Diet 2. The thresher shark eats schooling fish, such as herring and mackerel, and cephalopods such as squid. The large caudal fin is used to slap the surface of the water forcing fish to form tighter schools; the tail can then be used as a whip to stun or kill the prey. 3. Bony fish make up 97% of the thresher's diet. They feed mostly on small schooling fish such as menhaden, herring, Atlantic saury, sand lance, and mackerel. Bluefish and butterfish are the most common meal. They also feed on bonito and squid. Thresher sharks encircle schools of fish and then stun the prey with their tails. This is often done in groups and/or pairs. They have also been known to kill sea birds with their tails. 4. Thresher shark - These sharks are known for their extremely long tail fins. They sometimes use this long tail fin to stun (or shock) their prey. They can grow to 25 feet (7.5 meters). They live in the open seas and feed on schools of smaller fish for their oil. 5. TEETH AND DIET The Thresher eats squid and fish, corraling them with its elongated tail, stunning them with slaps from it, and catching them with its very sharp (but small) teeth. 6. In fall 1999, contract work began on a common thresher shark food habit study, and as of July 2000, work has been completed examining approximately 185 stomach samples collected from the California/Oregon (CA/OR) drift net fishery by federal fishery observers during 1998-99. The following prey items have been identified: northern anchovy, Pacific sardine, Pacific mackerel, California barracuda, Pacific hake, pelagic red crab, louvar, grunion, jack mackerel, shortbelly rockfish, market |

William, I am sure many of us here would keep a thresher shark if we caught one as they are probably the best eating sharks out there. Second, I would like to see some proof that thresher sharks kill sea lions. You have to be pretty much in the great white category for that to occur. |

Yes we need more sharks for the seals and otters as well. why do you think we don't have abs here any more. I believe it is the otters. and guys with Kayaks just buy shark guard. It should keep that big old white shark away from you. |

2 Thresher sharks taken equals more sea lions to eat our fish and destroy our fisheries. I dont understand the take of sharks when we have such a huge problem with sea lions. What really kills me is the high fives from other posters. Sometimes we can be shortsighted. We want to take sharks then complain when there is too many seals. When the Albacore go WFO-we brag openly about catching 30-40 fish per boat. Think the enviros are monitering this board? You bet! Come on guys-use your head. Practice catch and release with sharks. Use your head when bragging about excessive catch. |

Fished out of MB today in absolutely glassy conditions. Not much drift on the inside so we ran up to just below the "domes" and found some biters around 9:30...Once we found the hungry fish in 96-103ft it took us less than an hour to limit 3 guys on nice reds and chinas. We had a half dozen short lings, but no keepers...Darby had large sardines at the bait dock, which was a nice change from the frozen squid....I think we will try Buchon and points south tomorrow....jeff |

We will be out of MB on Sunday and might pick up some bait and give a try for the flatties before we usually lose our patience and finish the day with reds and lings. tooks the dogs to little pico creek and caught a small halibut while fishing for perch. Nice Thesher Mike!! I caught one last year on 12lb test baitcaster with a swim bait. Good thing it was only 28lbs or I would have been screwed. Thought it was a seal when it started going to the top and then it blasted out of the water and took off. I'm sure you had a first class rodeo on your hands with that one. Nice fish. |

We went out friday to go halibut and Thrasher shark fishing from avila.Launched at the early hour of 7. I will not even bother going off on that launch time, but we headed out and trolled for 2 1/2 hours for nothing off Pismo and Guadalupe beach. i got bored and off to Purisma for the big lings and bottom fish that I knew where there.Flat come seas and off we went, dropped our lines at 11:00 am and had our first Ling and started on the rest. Not more than 15 minutes into our quest, a stike and a big one and up it came, clear out of the water, air born and it looked like it was coming into the boat. You guessed it a Thrasher Shark. Oh S***.it broke the line and just missed the side of my boat. What a fish and i was useing an iron jig. i scrapped the s*** from my shorts and we continued on fishing.20 minutes later and another strike on the boat and the fish took off, burning line of the real, another Shark? You guessed it, and away it went,I fired up the engine and the battle was on, 2 1/2 hours later, double gaff and a 8 1/2 foot thrasher hit the deck. He was also caught on a lead jig.just amazing. People want to know why we fish!!!We finsihed getting our limits of bottom fish and headed home to Avila.Oh the port was closed, so we dropped off one drive on pier, got our truck and headed to Morro to get out. What a day!!!Pictures will follow. Two Thrashers on jigs, who would have believed it, we did tip both jigs with Sardines. Tip the bait guys well and they will be here to help us have a great fishing day! Thanks Deke, you are the man!!!! Mike on the Onieda B |

Sorry about the price of bait guys. That is how the crew gets paid. I have a very full time job running the corporation already and cannot go fishing that often. (and we're not very good at it when we do) So when we run out of bait, they don't get paid. Find me a captain who will take care of the boat, net, equipment, manage the crew and I'll see you get free bait for as long as he stays with it! |

Clark, I want to clarify that we weren't pissed or anything, just kind of suprised. I must admit, I probably could have said something to the deckhand and maybe he would have given us some more. Any also, the sardines were mobys so the #'s of them would obviously be less. If I was running for tuna, I would have asked for more. Just trying to point out that when you buy a full scoop, you should get a full scoop. Hell, I'm usually a great tipper but just couldn't justify it with the weak load. No big deal, we slammed some good reds up north but zero on the flatties. Tried Villa, China, etc. |

Clark, we got the same deal. We paid thirty bucks for forty baits for four of us. It was not a full scoop even though that is what we paid for. Sure do miss the old guy. Darby, you owe me, that was pretty sad. If someone pays for a full scoop, that means a full scoop out of the net. Either teach your guys or get out of the business. TinCan2 - You already contribute to our tow service in Morro Bay. Coast Guard is about all we have up here. Vessel assist is required north and south. Make sure to buddy up prior to departure to ensure someone knows the float plan. Eyeballed the bait at Virgs and they are nice Dines. Treat them right for finding bait. See you on the water. |

Considering chasing tuna on Saturday. Looks like maybe 35/19 121/47 is a warm plume 45 miles west of Morro Bay. Any sage advise from any of you tuna heavyweights? Will |

Plan on heading out of Morro tomorrow for some bottom fishing. Will be up on 16 and 72 if anyone else is out. Looks like it may be a nice foggy morning. |

TIM, Your right we leave on the SEA ADVENTURE 80 on the 20 and will return the 24 , so we will miss again, Its the basic same group of COPS from last year, But this year we three amigos have the secret weapon in hand, Last year there was a couple guys that had SHIMANO BAIT RUNNERS 6500, as soon as a jig strike happened these guys would bait up and throw there bait , they kicked butt , so we did get a lesson , this year we are armed with the same gear . We brought home at least 200# last year but the spinning gear held up , which I was shocked , we are spooling on 150 yds of 50# power pro and on top of that 250 yds of 25# vanish red. So I will have to take a rain check on the TACO . We will be home for a week and then off to CABO for 10 days at VAN WORMER RESORTS. OK tim go get em Blackie |

Blackie, What Sporty are you headed out on this time around? I'm doing my "at least once, yearly" 3 day on Bob Taft's TopGun 80 with a couple local friends. We depart Thursday the 24th at 9 pm and return Sunday the 27th at 6 pm. If I remember correctly, you did brother Chuck Taft's Sea Adventure 80 at the same time we did TopGun last year. We'll have to compare Tuna and if we're there at the same time, I'll buy you a Fish Taco at Point Loma seafood! ~Tim |

The Santa Cruz/Monterey report was not very encouraging...Unless something changes for the better,I`m inclined to fish local on Sat/Sun.....and give the warm water another week to move in before I drop $400 for a tank of gas...BTW, gas is $4.99/gal at the fuel dock in MB next to Giovanni`s....jeff |

that is great news darby, thanks for putting out the effort to get bait! ok guys, darby and the bait crew did their part-- now we have to do ours, make sure that when you go, you get at least a little bait an tip these guys well!making bait is hard work.if we dont make it worth their time and effort we wont have bait.alot of guys complained about not having bait, now we have a chance to show them how much we appreciate what they do!I am pretty sure that virgs doesnt make much(if any)money on bait so please let them know how much you appreciate the effort they put out. Billy Boy has a full load of sardines in Morro Bay. Regular bait dock hours are 6 - noon or after hours call Virg's. Usually someone can help you out. For early tuna runs get a couple boats together to make it worth the bait crews' lost sleep. Marty - my experience with "smoothie" drag washers is they only work good for a fish or two or until they get wet. I like the stock washers best unless someone knows about something new in the last few years. I know a guy who will do it if you call me at the landing. |

Greetings, Just an update on all the bait at PSL. I was out on the Cal Poly pier last week and there was literally hundreds of yards of bait out there. There were several different bait balls around the pier. One was at least 200 yards wide by 400 yard long! It was amazing!!! My students were blown away:0 No wonder the halibut are in best fishes, steve |

Friends: My partner (Bob Wendt) and I went out to test our boat ... to make sure it is ready for our 6-week trip to Alaska. Decided to stop for a couple hours of fishing down toward Pt. Buchon. The big reds were on the bite ... got almost 2 limits in about 2 hours. One nice ling. Next week we head for Alaska. We are going to bring back the salmon that we cannot catch down here in CAL. I will report back to you on my return. Mel |
