Unfortunately it was rockfish limits plus a ling and not WSB limits.I only hooked the 1 fish..Sorry for the confusion...I just put an underwater squid light on the boat today and may try to make some bait early tomorrow before first light if my wife will let me out for a 3rd morning in a row.....BTW, My sincere apology to "Taurus" for the wisecrack about his report of albacore jumpers from a commercial black cod fisherman...Any quality tuna or general "where to find 'm" info is what the website is all about....I'm just still sour grapes about a similar tip I got from a commercial black cod fisherman last season which resulted in an 80 gallon "dry sack" boat ride....Mea culpa!!...jeff |

Ryan, Hey, are you guys driving 101 all the way up? Where in Washington are you heading? I lived near Newport Oregon for 6 years and can tell you lots of spots around there. We also used to do 4-5 day sea kayak trips in the San Juan Islands each summer. Email me if you want more info. later, steve |

Greetings, Fished PSL in the skiff today. Got a sweet scoop of sardines from Deke and pounded up to the Pea Patch. It was bumpy in the morning, but laid down as the day went. It was very nice when we left at 1 p.m. Caught 4 keeper halibut (22-24"), 2 nice sand sole, 1 keeper ling, and a few bolina. All halibut caught before 10 a.m. in 35-60' of water. FYI, was at the Avila farmer's market last night and we walked out on the pier. There were 10-15 guys with buckets full of makerel! later, steve |

Fished the north end of the bay today for an excellent early bite.We hooked our first white seabass of the year at 7:30 on a white jig/squid combo fishing right in the kelp in 45ft.I got bit on the sink and the fish went straight into the kelp,We got it to deep color once by backing the boat down all the way inside the kelp but finally got sawed off on #25lb Trilene after a 20 minute back and forth...Ended up with limits plus a 25" ling.It was overcast and cool, but very little wind and swell....jeff |

Bob & et al; it does look like a short lull in the wind for sunday. some of the forecasts and models show the wind down 10 kts but, always a but, it is forecast to blow tonight and the swell is short and steep so it will probably be sloppy even for a short run tomorrow. For some reason the NOAA graphic forecast for our area is not working which is the best one for our area. |

Sunday wx forecast is now looking good for albacore prospecting per ucar site and NOAA (for what thats worth). At least with a shot of fish close in and a double check on the weather Sat. Thanks John for your relayed info from commercial buddies. I have heard of fish caught off Conception a few weeks back and there had been some good looking water to the SSW of PSL. I am in Ventura and we have to go 60+ miles at the best of times to get into albie waters so we envy you guys in the MB area that can go prospecting so close. |

Yeah, Blackie...we're gonna have to BEG for refunds since it's all over, huh?! LOL! Study the counts. Many of the Sporties just went through a cycle of 1 day and day and a halfer's and came in with marginal counts. Same goes for Private Boaters. TopGun80 rolled in on Sunday from a 3 day with 415 fish for 24 guys so I guess the season is over! If your not on a 2.5 day or better, you're gonna be scratchin' for some fish this week. It's a full moon and it will turn around, it always does, you just have to keep the hope that you catch them at the right time. |

Fished MB this morning for a good bite on the rockfish before my nephew turned green and started to hurl at 8:00am....The swell was small but very short interval...Wind off Cayucos was about 10-15mph...water temp was 58.5 in the middle of the bay...I loved the earlier post about "confirmed jumpers outside the weather buoy"....Take a lesson my friend...no tuna bite is "confirmed" until someone brings one to the fish cleaning station ,Virg`s,or one of the commercial buyers on the Embarcadero.....JEFF |

Coamps is back up and running. This is an excellent site to see what the west coast winds look like for a 48 hr forecast. http://www.sccoos.org/data/coamps/output/coampsfs.tticluster.com/COAMP S-bin/COWEB_vis_loop.cgi%3fUSER=coamps&PROJ=NAVAIR_West&DTG=2008071800 &IMGNAME=chart.COAMPS.10m-wind-wspd0.1 The problem now is it doesn't paint a pretty picture. With John's report of LFT in the area old weather bouy it is frustrating to just watch the wind blow. We had a clear SST shot last eve but it is pretty mushy, probably due to the wind. To make matters worse there is no relief in sight. |

Heading out tomorrow for a muti day fishing trip off mid coast of Baja. Amongst other things I'm Hoping to hook into a jumping, fying Mako. I'd likely keep it because shark has always been one of my favorite fillets-especially the ones I catch. I dont mind keeping them down there because they dont have a seal problem in Baja like we do. Most of you has mis-read my initial post. The reason I am suggesting releasing sharks locally is because we need them to eat every damn sea lion from Buchon south to Point Sal. Like you-most of my visions of salmon fishing is watching a sea lion flipping a salmon in the air with a bite taken from the stomach of my fish (with my flasher and hoochie busted off on the seal). I have lost more gear and salmon than I care to admit. I hate them more than most-but chill out guys. I'm in the same boat as you are. This is the best fishing report board out there. Keep fishing, slaying the fish and sharing the stories. Just be realistic and know that when you are talking crap about huge numbers or killing seal lions-those kind of posts will go into some enviro's archives. Dont be a hero-be smart. |

Jeremy, don`t move too late or the wind will follow you in. You don`t have to go as far as Pecho for rock fish. 150 ft in front of the light house usually bites. Look for hard bottom and rocks. In side the harbor along the beach between Hartford pier and Cal Poly pier is good for flattys. Seldom any wind there. Capt Dave |

That is great news John ! Now all we need is for this lousy wind to back off so us fair weather sailors can go fishing. Jeremy; Your quick question won't have a quick answer, there are just too many variables. All you can do is cross your fingers and give it a shot. White rock is the one closest to Avila and located more in the bite than Bird rock. Good luck ! |

I've got a quick question. If you're fishing PSL, how bad does the wind have to blow on the outside before it becomes difficult to drift for flatties near bird rock? Thinking about fishing for rockfish Saturday morning and then running to the inside to drift for 'buts when the wind picks up, but I don't want to make the trip if the wind is going to be blowing too hard to make it feasible. Thanks in advance. Jeremy P |

Here is an idea that will help solve the seal problem and save the Polar Bears at the same time. Set up a Polar bear sanctuary on San Miguel island and relocate a bunch of endangered Polar Bears, breeding age of course, to the island. White sharks are too few,too slow breeding and do not have a big enough appetite. Polar bears being warm blooded do eat more especially with cubs ! We could change their name from Polar Bears to Channel Island bears and have boats do "bear watching" trips. Think of the possibilities !! On a less serious note; Looks like at least another week of off-shore wind. We have the water temps and clarity but the wind won't allow any prospecting. |

Nice essay Bob. Can you or anybody make an estimate of the % salmon in the the sea lion/seal diet and how many fish that would require. You seem to be suggesting the man is actually part of "nature" and should be included in the species that are allowed to consume other species. |

On the return trip home off Raggaed, 64 degree, no further out than 2 miles off shore the whole trip, sea life was abundant. Until the enactment of the Marine Mammal Protection act 1971 the DFG used to pay a bounty on sea lions in order to keep their population at around 20,000. Since then their population has exploded to just under an estimated 400,000 California sea lions and just under 100,000 harbor seals. These animals eat mostly a diet of baitfish but one study found that 30% consisted of juvenile rockfish. It's estimated that they eat over 7% of their body weight each day as compared the sea otter which consumes about 25% of its weight daily. Assuming the average sea lion weighs 300 lbs, they consume about 10.5 million pounds of fish per day. That is about 4 billion pounds of seafood each year. I don't remember what our rockfish quota is but I'm confident it is less than 1% of the sea lions take. I have spoken to our congressional representatives about this and they are afraid to address it. So eventually, after we are prevented from fishing all together, the sea lion will die off from starvation and you won't have to worry about the sea lions anymore. Bob Hather Environmentalist |

I wonder how much fish and game even consider the diet of the seals and sea lions when making their protected areas. I know that when F&G tried something similar with certain deer Populations. and the deer over populated the area and many starved. the reason is that a certain area can only support so much. So hunting like fishing helps to maintain a healthy population. SO some how we need to attract more white sharks and killer whales to the central coast. Just my thought.I do kayak fish as well as on a boat and there are things to keep sharks away from us. Or we are just part of the food chain. |

Jim- my brother "hooked up" with three seals at the pea patch and at pirates, during the holiday weekend. On saturday kayak fishing off avila, I was surrounded by no less than five male sealions aggressively "protecting" their kelp beds. Had to leave the area since any catch would have been eaten or worse than that was the possibility of hooking up on a brown marlin in a kayak. Its tragic because I know some people who donate their time saving injured or sick sealions and "nursing" them back to be released. Long timers could assist if the sealion population has ever been this prolific. |

I went out Monday afternoon for Halibut at around 3:30pm in my 14' skiff, the Ocean was like a lake and it was a beautiful day,But a pack of seals found me and stole every bait and rig I tied up. I don't think it has ever been this bad with the seals.I know we all complain about the seal population, but this situation with the seal over population is totally out of hand and the DFG should step-up and organize a culling operation.I can only imagine how many Rockfish these seals are eating, the fish don't have a chance,I am thinking about when I dive the Channel Islands and I see Rockfish and the way they "hang out" in their natural environment.I always thought(before I became a Diver) that the fish would be floating horizontally in the water column maybe by a hole or an overhang but in reality the fish are hiding from seals in ways that would blow your mind, like suspended vertically upside down in kelp or floatsam or hugging a slight recess on a rock that has the same color the fish does or laying flat on their side on top of a rock. These fish are not just "hanging out" these fish are actively hiding from seals and something really must be done. Bloody decks forever!! |

Dearest William, You are a either a total stupid ass or just playing stupid to antagonize. Playing stupid in your initial post, then spewing nonsense at the start of your second post proves this point. Your false premise regarding bragging about the killing 30 or 40 albacore also reeks of stupidity or antagonization. No post on this board for several years has talked about catches like that. Eight years ago the Nanci B caught 36 Albacore and we ate the flesh of each of these blessed creatures in homage to the fishing Gods. I personally ate the raw flesh off the bones of these fish and liked it. I call it Sashimi. Better eating than the nuts and twigs that you probably enjoy. However, please keep posting. I think the recipies have been great and look forward to hearing your latest central coast fishing story. |

Thanks Blackie, Maybe I'll run up to Virg's and have a looksy tomorrow. I've been thinking about snagging one for a long time but your post just reinforced a long time idea! Bob Taft came in yesterday from a 3 day run with 7 Bluefin Tuna, 25 Yellowfin Tuna, 96 Albacore Tuna, 258 Yellowtail & 29 Dorado for 24 guys onboard. That's a nice load of feesh! I hope it holds up for us!!! |

What the DFG should also realize is that if we are really catching so many halibut, are they really overfished? Wouldn't an overfished population result in poor takes not epic ones? Wasn't samlon closed due to poor migration numbers NOT boat loads of salmon catches. I would have to think the DFG puts at least some sort of logic into their assessments....then again.... |

Mike, I have a little different take on the SF Bay halibut. DFG should have been smart enough to cut the limit on halibut back when they shut down the salmon season ! Even the most causual observer would conclude that when you can't fish for salmon guess what ? Halibut !! |

actually what William is saying does have some truth to it, that if we tell how many of what we caught, DFG may take a look. You doubt me? Why is DFG suddenly so interested in the halibut fishery in SF Bay? Read all the posts on Coastside about how we're nailing the halibut left and right. There have even been press releases on how DFG will CHANGE the regs if they're "study" shows halibut are 'overfished' Call DFG up in Monterey and ask to talk to someone about halibut and why DFG is checking it out... SOUND FAMILIAR? They did the same damn thing with rockfish...when they do a study it's inevitable they close something down. Report you're epic days, but don't exaggerate too much otherwise them damn eco-wackos will start doing a damn study on Thresher next... come 5 years all we'll be fishing for is kingfish...just imagine how those posts will read. |

Hey William, if these men and women in here offend you in such manner im sure P.E.T.A.'s blog page would welcome you with arms open. Slaying this and slaying that, are you trying to hide the fact that when you yourself catch a fish and take it home to prepare it is not dead? News flash pal,as long as mankind continues to fish the open waters he will return to land with great fish stories for his friends and family. This board happens to be one of those places to share great stories, so if you compare our stories to "diarrea" then you just stepped into one big bucket of s&!t!! |

William; Since you have been fishing for over forty years I am sure you are aware that "fisherpeople" tend to be less than politically correct and somewhat profane in their choice of words to describe an epic day or battle with a monster fish. I am pretty sure that neither you or I will change that anytime soon nor will anything they say or do encourage or discourage the little green wackos from their goal of shutting us down. So let's enjoy what we have while we have it and describe it any way we want. |

We love the ocean, the critters that live in it and put more into careing for it than anyone. The enviros hate us and that's all there is to it. If they are willing to make Public statements like, "I want those damn fishermen off my ocean" (Julia Packard) imagine what they are saying behind closed doors? Get over it. Eat a seal. Taste kind of like porpoise but more fatty like whale. I for one love to hear your reports!! |

Wow,I thought this was a fishing web sight where people post what we caught on any given day. I can't believe people get that upset over me keeping one Thrasher Shark. For the environmentalist, they arte probably not reading this post any how.Get over the fact that I, yes, I chose to eat the Damn thing. By the way thanks for the Terriyaki reciept. I had it last night and it was just terrific.I can't wait to hook another one.Do you know where I can get a seal steak? That sounds good also. Does it go with poached Salmon? No pun intended!!! Admittedly I was careless with my last message. I am aware that Threshers dont eat seals-however most seals will eat sick or injured seals. The message is real clear: Enviro's monitor this board. I have been fishing nationally and internationally for 40+ years. I love to share fishing stories too-but I'm not going to talk crap and give the Enviro's ammo to take away my priveleges. The diarrea that has flowed from some of you since my post is exactly what the enviro's want to hear and read about! Give it a break, think twice about what you are saying and doing. When there are hearings going on we are trying to sound like responsible fishermen who respect the fisheries. Now that we are in season we are talking crap about slaying this and slaying that. You are screwing it up for yourselves, our kids, our fisheries and our landings and related businesses just so you can sound macho. You guys are blowing it. |

Tim (Tree Doc) Try this Lemon and seal are truly a marriage made in heaven, and this lemony fresh seal recipe will quickly become a favorite. It's Sardinian; to serve 4: Prep Time: 3 hours, 5 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Ingredients: A fresh seal fillet weighing about 1 1/3 pounds (600 g), cut into half-inch (1.2 cm) rounds A small onion, peeled and sliced 2 tablespoons minced parsley 1 tablespoon lemon juice 5 tablespoons olive oil 4 lemon slices, cut into wedges (use an organic lemon if possible) Salt and pepper to taste Preparation: Combine a scant half cup of water (200 ml) with the lemon juice, parsley, and oil, and season the mixture to taste with salt and pepper. Marinate the seal in the liquid for three hours. When the marinating time is almost up, preheat your oven to 360 F (180 C). Put the seal chunks in a pan, sprinkle the onion and some of the marinade over it, season lightly with salt and pepper, and roast it for 20-25 minutes. Transfer the seal to a serving dish, decorate it with the lemon wedges, spoon the pan drippings over it, and serve. The wine? White, and a Verdicchio would be nice. Enjoy, Carl |

Does anyone know if there is any local vhf streaming for those of us who do not live on the coast. The ability to listen to vhf traffic via an internet feed or website. I've seen this on the east coast but not local. Any suggestions? Thanks, |

Thanks for the effort Steve. I tried to call you several times during the day but no luck. Weather/SST/chlorophyll: Finally got a useable SST shot last eve. Looks like a good break at the inside of the elbow centered at 35:00/121:40 about 45nm from Morro/Avila. Temp about 62 and based on previous chlorophyll shots it is probably clean. The downside is the weather. After today it is forecast to be windy for another week. Maybe Gene on the Full Moon (previous post) will check it out today ! Darby, Thanks for the bait effort , we all appreciate it. You know of course that fishermen would complain about something if it was free. But you will have to beat them off with a stick when the tuna show !! |

The CARMEN had no success with albacore yesterday. 55 miles west of Morro Bay. Few defined temperature breaks. 60 plus degrees by noon. Dead calm. The feed was there. Birds and dolphin too. 130 sea miles, 98 gallons of fuel, ouch! |

Hey Darby, thanks for the effort on the bait. We all know it is not an easy thing to do with all that has been going on around here. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how much the fishermen around here will support your efforts.
