Some buddies of mine were diving the inner reef at 10e and said there were some white fish and HUGE sheep. I like to use squid on small circle hooks. To find it turn right at 8 fathoms and go just past the rock until you find reef. The reef will stop, turn to shale again and back to the 10e reef. That's what John calls "the slot". Good spot for sea bass, halibut and I've got big bonita there. |

Like Blackie, just returned from a 3 day on TopGun 80 at 6 p.m. Sunday. We ran long, as far south as about 100 - 110 miles due south from San Diego then back up the line. Weather was incredible with a moderate swell and wind on Friday which turned into about a 2' swell and glassy calm conditions from Saturday on through. Spent most of our time about 95 mi down. Friday's bite was great! Smaller numbers of Albacore but the Yellow Fin were on the chew as well as the Yellowtail and Dorado. The Seiners were elsewhere, we were alone and didn't see one till on our way up the line, enroute home on Sunday. Saturday's bite consisted of more YFT on the troll with a few on bait but the Mossbacks and Dodo's were on the chew again. Several WFO stops. Sunday was tougher but started with a bang when my buddy Harry, myself, and another were soaking a bait at greylight before the boat was awake. Slob Albacore came up on Harry's bait and he was the first to go BENDO! 30 pounders were abound and the bite lasted for just a bit before they sank out. Fishing went spotty after that with a few stops on Kelp for another wild Dodo bite with a few Yellowtail. We hit a spot with 2 paddies about 100 yards apart and split the difference. They were loaded with Dodo's. Hundreds and hundreds! It was an awesome site to see them in the perfectly calm glassy water. The bite went off on the bow and the stern. We ended up with a great bag for each in our party of three by scoring several each of Albacore, Yellow Fin, Dorado, and Yellowtail. Only 3 BFT's on the boat for this trip. The 3 of us brought home 33 fish. The freezers are once again full! Sashimi for lunch today! |

Fished MB by myself early this morning (ie 6:00-9:00)....Ocean was flat calm w/ virtually no wind....Unfortunately this also translated to very little current/drift.I scratched up 10 rockfish, but nothing of any size. All the fish I caught were plugged with small 'dines, and bait was puddling around the boat everywhere I fished.Water temp at Pt Estero was 59F...Jeff |

FYI As you guys and gals know JR and I just got back from a private charter to the same area it was unbeliveable how many seiners are out there , the fixed wing was flying around and then the helio come off the mother ship drops a dye pack on the school, and the net boat drops off the stern pulling the net around the school , all the time there are these little red speed boats chasing the school towards the net, the net boat closes the net at the ship , then the pen come over and they transfer the fish into the pen . Its a wonder there are any BLUEFIN left out there , most of the seiners we saw last week were mexican , Im told they haul the pens to ENSNADA fatten the fish and sell them to the orient. Sucks big time we would pull up on a school and they would sound , you may get one bait fish. I guess theres not much we can do about it , but I will have to think long and hard before I spend the money on a trip out of SD . Three days fishing and four measly fish dont get it, 40# pounds of vacumed fillets, bad fishing . Hope TREE DOC has a beter report. Blackie |

Still no end in sight for the winds on the outside but the inside was better than advertised yesterday and probably today. The SST/chloro still look good at the donut/elbow. More bad news; looks like we are going to lose another buoy. Pt. Arguello buoy is scheduled to be removed soon ! |

Great weather but just OK fishing for us today.None of my shallow spots north of Cayucos were biting, and we did not see any squid inside the 10E.I finally got something going in 130-135 ft off Pt.Estero with a mix of smaller reds, starrys, gophers and blues to get our 20 fish.We tried drifting halibut outside the rock on both the way out and way back to no avail......still a good day on the water with very little wind, comfortable air temp and a fishable swell....jeff |

Weather/SST/Chlorophyll Good shots yesterday of both temp and chloro. The donut looks the best, based on chlorophyll, with 59 degree clean water which will probably jump up a degree or two when (if) the wind stops. Right now there is still no end in site for the lousy wind, especially on the out side. The inside should be good in the mornings. I Believe that both the COAMPS and SAILFLOW will be valuable assets to determine what the wind condition will be both on the inside and the outside. Sailflow is easy to use and COAMPS is a little more comprehensive. |

Stacy....thanks.....I guess the biggest problem with the weather is trying to figure out what is the worst weather that I like fishing in....I can usually get an over time shift at work so the big question is to make some extra gas cash or fish.....I would rather have a full tank of gas when the tuna get close than get my ass kicked on a rock cod trip.... |

Jim, The noaa "text" forecast for our region generally states the worst seas and winds for the 100+ miles of coastline in our area and out to 60 miles offshore. I haven't studied the wind models that Harrell posted but I will this coming weekend. I really like the graphical forecast on the noaa page as it takes land mass into account for blocking swell and such. Also the effect of Terrain on wind. |

Harrell....I appreciate your weather reports....You have saved me a fortune in gas money in the past....I just dont understand the wind model deal....what is good what is bad...when its not worth going... about all I understand is you dont want to go if the waves height is the same as the distance apart...I also dont understand how on Wednesday it was sloppy south but San Simeon was 0 wind and pretty flat. Anyway....thanks again for all the weather advice.....Jim |

Here is the one I have been using for a few years http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecasts/graphical/sectors/mtr.php and have found it very reliable. Well as reliable as weather forecasting can be. The only thing is you have to mess with it to get the times of day to be correct with the forecast. So far from what I have been seeing. Sailflow.com has been good as well. I think most of the get their info from the same places. Sailflow is just very simple to use. |

Jack, looks good and definitely easy to use. I like the 1 hour increments for the 30 hour forecast. My computer security system doesn't like it, says it is probably a scam. Anything like that on your PC. It plays fine and the data is good. I will compare it to COAMPS and actuals for a while to check reliability. How long have you been using it and have you found it reliable and relatively accurate ? |

http://www.sccoos.org/data/coamps/coamps.html This is by far the best wind forecast site That I have found. You can zoom in on any area from above SF to Baja and see the wind forecast every 3 hours out to 84 hours. This includes our inshore areas and the channel islands. It is a little tricky to use but well worth the effort. I will be happy to walk anyone through it. Just send me an e-mail and and we can set up and do it step by step via telephone. |

Jeff, That's the first time I have heard of a whitefish at 10E. You are the master of catching fish where they usually aren't. I guess you really find out where all the whitefish are when you have live squid...same with sheephead. We shot up to Pico Creek for some nice reds in 150 ft, then tried to finish off in the shallows but they had lock-jaw. There was 0 wind up there after 1030. My mom said it got pretty windy south though. Thanks for the ride Cracka. |

Fished out of MB this morning...I got a late start @ 7:00 and only made 2 pieces of squid inside the 10E using the sabiki rigs as Bob Hather had suggested...I hooked and lost a nice halibut at the boat on the first squirter, and managed a #5 lb rock sole, and a #7 lb whitefish with the second squid (double duty)....Otherwise it was the usual un-exciting 10E mix of blues and gophers on the swimbaits and frozen squid....weather was overcast ,but very little swell and wind.I called it a day at 11:00...jeff |

Steve; Compter model of wind speed (color scale) and wind direction (arrows) at 30 ft above the surface in 3hr increments out to 84 hours from the base time. There are three areas of interest to us ie; north, central & south. West Coast outline is overlayed. I have compared it to actuals (buoys) since yesterday and so far so good ! It will be valuable tool for chasing albacore if it is reliable, of course we know that weather is subject to change without notice ! |

Here is the latest COAMPS weather link; Click on the most current DFG Base.... and scroll down to Grid 3 6km then click the animator ring on the 10m wind... line . Use the frame button to scroll through each 3 hour forecast. If this system proves to be relatively accurate it will be ,combined with the other forecasts, an excellent tool for the area from Monterey to Pt. Conception and it covers both the inshore and offshore areas. http://www.sccoos.org/data/coamps/coamps.html |

A couple of years back when the WSB showed up at the 10E buoy we were able to make live squid by using a lucky joe on the bottom in 80 ft of water anytime of day. We would catch one squid about every ten minutes. So it wasn't necessary to make bait in the dark with a squid light. We would leave the bait rig working from a rod holder while we drifted live squid flylining. By the way, we got a very generous scoop of bait from the Billy Boy on Sunday. Thanks Darby for the effort. Bob Hather |

Tim, just google maptech. They are still there but seem to be doing their map thing differently. I know what you are referring to because I used to use it too. Didn't need it after I got a GPS chart plotter. |

Bryan, Hey, call Patriot and find out when they are doing a Purisma trip. I think Sunday, but I'm not sure. There is very good rock/lingcod fishing down there. Be careful about offering to pay for more than a "share" of a days fishing. Charter guys get angry and if someone takes you up on and gets caught then they can get in trouble. Good luck, steve |

Fellow Anglers, I am in need of some help. I have a buddy coming to visit from FL. I would like to show him some CA Central coast fishing. This is his first time to the west coast. Problem is I don't have a boat right now. We are both experienced Anglers. He owns a large Sportfisher he uses often out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We are looking for a half day of Inshore fishing (Hali's,Lings,Rock fish) out of Port San Luis this Saturday morning, July 26th. I would be happy to pay for GAS, launch, lunch? Hope some one can help me out...Thanks, Bryan 805-878-5951 |

I think the site was Maptech.com, but is not responding at this time. You could bring up our local charts and put the cursor on any spot for lat.s and long.s. I marked alot of spots on my paper charts here at home. Here's hoping someone can get it to work again? Tim |

Tim; Both Terrafin and Tempbreak should do what you want. Use "Sample charts" on Terrafin. The SST data will be outdated but lat/lon will work. Tempbreak is free so everything is current. |

got out early this morning to look for the squid good karma reported. he must have been lying because i couldn't find any....just kidding jeff, not where you reported anyways....i found some spots in front of the shell mound in 65 feet. water still seems cool at 56.5 for squid and c-bass. maybe the water up against cayucos is a bit warmer. made some drifts and trolled what i caught for nada so i headed to work at 9.water was very dirty at the 10e with lots of jellies in the water. much cleaner south of the jetty. very sloppy with an early wind. the bait inside the bay is thick. looks like sardines? could be the best bet on the incoming tomorrow. thanks for the bouy numbers. and the offshore reports. |

Just because someone's been fishing their whole life doesn't mean they tell the truth!!! In fact "I fish therefore I lie" would be more like it. I've been doing this my whole life and Jeff's right - don't believe it until you see it. Every year people make up stories so others will spend their time and money to go looking or to get Virg's to run an exploritory. SHOW ME THE FISH!! |

Looks like my boat will finally be done this week and want to take her on a test run for some halibut. I've heard some of you talk about the pea patch? Can you tell me what area this is referring to and any other areas out of mainly PSL, but do occationally fish MB for halibut, that I may be able to try. It has been 15yrs since I last fished these waters as a kid and I would appreciate any advice or coordinates? Thanks guys for any help you can provide. |

Thanks for the report Harley, maybe next time. Jim G; Should be better weather reports later today after all the forecsts and models are updated. Right now it doesn't look bad on the inside all week but the outside might be iffy. You should be able to target halibut, threshers and of course rockfish and even white seabass. Let us know how you do. |

My 18 year old daughter and I Went offshore today. We got off to a late start and didn't leave Morro until 9:00 am. I took a 190 heading and at 35 miles the water turned blue green and 59.6 degrees. There was a 5 square mile area that was alive with bait, birds and dolphins. I thought that this was the motherload. I fished this area for 3 hours for not one bite. I did not see or meter any fish. West toward the donut turned cold and green.Good blue water extended 6 miles due south of the weather buoy. The weather got pretty sloppy with the mixed swell. Winds 20-25 kts. We finished the day in Estero Bay for limits of rock cod , one 25 inch ling and a 38 inch 26lb halibut. Spending the day with my daughter was priceless. I think that this inside push of blue water should be holding tuna. |

Left MB harbor at 5:30 this morning and had no trouble making a dozen pieces of live squid on the bottom in 75ft,just inside the 10E buoy.....I drifted with the squid for 2 hours with no flatties or seabass to show for the effort, but I did meter some bigger fish midway in the water column...Had to head in at 8:00 due to the wife's plans,so I really didn't get much chance to look around.Next trip,I will start earlier and try to make enough bait with my squid lamp to run up north and fish the edge of the kelp...Hope the albie guys found them today....jeff |

Been listening and calling for nada yet. FYI; They average swell period is more significant to me than the dominant period. It's the short stuff that hurts ! |
