Rough seas... About an hour out... Might get you to 25nm depending on how hard you're running.
Not even a 3rd of the way to 90nm. More like 3-5 hrs of travel time where you're refering to.

Great report Mike, congrats on the monster "pez gallo". Yep, Baja can be a pain in the butt at times - oh but the rewards! We should get together soon to see the picts. I'll talk to Shelley and maybe we can set up a BBQ/fish fry with strawberry margaritas. Paul

FISH REPORT

Well we got back 0100 this morning from the east cape , fished VAN WORMER RESORT PLAY DEL SOL, we did as good as any one else did , the fishing was not wide open , we caught yellow fin in the 10 to 20 # class , DO DO same thing, there were four of us fishing a cruiser wich was no problem.
Bait was a pain in the ass to get every morning , we would leave the dock at 0715 and hunt down a panga with bait , then run for a hour or two to the fish.
I did not care for the way they take care of the fish , as you know the tuna need to be bled and iced right away , you will have to incist they bleed and clean then at once , bring your own zip lock bags and ice chest full of ice .
I guess its a learning curve.
We had two EPIC days , my grandson , who has never caught a billfish , we got him hooked into a 300#blue , after a 90 min fight the fish was released at the boat.
My turn came a couple days later we had run up to the north islands to fish , finding a few pargo and not much else , we told the skipper we wanted to fish for the roosters, we moved inshore and started fishing, I wanted to catch one as i have never even seen a live one let alone catch one , well I hooked up a small 4# fish , I told the deck hand I wanted to take a picture of it since it was my first , the language barrier failed and he cut it loose , I voiced my displeasure with him , like he gave a shit .
We continued throwing bait at the elusive chicken fish,my three compadres were on the starboard side so I put on a new bair and gave it a toss off the port with my NEW never broken in loomis custom built TOM LEWIS ROD , with a accurate boss stocked with maxima 20# line and a flour leader, J hook,we were in a good drift so I continued spolling off the line letting the bait do the work , all of a sudden the line started ripping off the reel , I let the fish run for a count of ten , and set the hook , what jumped out of the water made my HEART skip a beat it was a monster rooster, well the fight was on we spent the next half hour chasing and fighting the fish , in the end I finally got my pictures , a beautiful 60# fish we took a lot of pictures and i told the skipper I wanted to release the fish , we tossed him back after a few photos and he rolled over on his side , I did not want that to happen , one of my partners went overboard and swam the fish back to where he swam off on his own , tired but ALIVE .
It was the fish of my life and I will never forget the fight.
If I can figure our how how to post pict they will be forth coming.
Was an EPIC time in this old mans life .

Carl I saw that report this mourning. It's about time! I am planning to make a run Monday mourning out of Monterey If the weather holds. A couple of days ago a boat got 6 fish in rough water in about an hour out at 36.30-123.49 or there abouts. 90 miles. I am going to head toward those numbers and hope I find something before I get there.

Federal Sport Fish Restoration; California Department of Fish and Game Fish Hatchery and Stocking Program

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), intend to serve as the lead agency, pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, as amended, in the preparation of a joint EIS/EIR for the California Department of Fish and Game's (CDFG) Fish Hatchery and Stocking Program (Program). Under the Sport Fish Restoration Act (SFRA), FWS currently proposes to fund actions associated with the operation of CDFG's 13 trout hatcheries (listed below) and the Mad River anadromous fish hatchery, including stocking from those 14 hatcheries. The Federal action would not include funding CDFG's private stocking permit program. The CDFG will serve as the lead agency under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) analyzing the hatcheries' operations funded by the SFRA, as well as CDFG's entire fish hatchery program. This notice announces two public scoping meetings on our intended actions.

DATES: Two public scoping meetings will be held to solicit public input on the alternatives, concerns, and issues to be addressed in the EIS/ EIR. The meeting dates are:

1. Monday, September 8, 2008, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., Sacramento, California.

2. Thursday, September 11, 2008, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Carson, California.

ADDRESSES: The public scoping meeting locations are:

2. Carson--Carson Community Center, First Floor, Adult Activities Room, 3 Civic Plaza Drive, Carson, CA 90745.

Send comments on the scope of the EIS/EIR to Ms. Jill Wright, Fish and Wildlife Service, 2800 Cottage Way , Suite W-2606, Sacramento , CA 95825; via e-mail to dfghatcheryeir@dfg.ca.gov; or via fax to (916) 978-6155.

Hey guys,
Just got a phone call from Stacey. He's in Bandon right now and is going fishing in the morning on a charter (fishes 8 people). The boat just came in and they had 65 albacore...all troll fish (most ports don't have bait up there). Anyhow, he is totally pumped. The ocean is flat calm. Fish were 38 miles out. At least somebody is catching fish.
I hope the weather holds for me!
later,
steve

We fished Tue. on the King Willie for 3 keeper lings but no Halibut!!! Fished Estero Bay all day for one Keeper Ling and went down to Buchon for two more to end the day. Went out Wed. on the Wakefish for a nice bunch of Rockcod around Cambria including two Lings we did not have to measure. Weather was not as good as expected but doable. Thanx to all who fished with me and we will be back at it next week. Hope this post finds you all well Wakefish out!!

We fished Tues. just north of Cambria and it was not a nice ride up due to wind waves and larger seas than anticipated. Left there around 12:00 and it was gusting with white caps about 15kts. A lot better when we got into Estero Bay. We were able to fish for another hour or so. Wed. we just stayed around Estero Bay and it was kind of a repeat of the day before with some large swells, 6-8 feet coming through. Some wind waves as well. Wind built all morning and we came in around 2:00. Fishing was ok but only if we dropped right on fish. Has anyone else had a juvinile seal jump in your boat? We had one messing around last week and it splashed us and jumped around and then landed in the back of the boat and jumped back out. About a half hour later it came back and was jumping around and landed on a friends rod while he was fishing. He held onto the rod and we had a good laugh.

Thanks for the info Harrell. The launch went fine this morning at PSL.

We were on the water by 7:45 and around the corner in front of the light house by 8. The wind was already blowing +10 and the seas were tossed with a very short period. It was not nice and we headed to the inside by 9:30. Certainly would not have wanted to be running for tuna today.

Boated 2 nice Halibut and a bucket full of rockies!

Steve (Mini-Av) landed the biggest ling I've seen pulled out of this area EVER!

Greetings,
PSL report. We fished the Pea Patch today for 2 keeper 'buts (both 28") and 1 short. Also caught 3 keeper lings (released 2), including 1 36" monster!!! Nice work Poncho! Good bite until about 10 am and then things shut down. Fish were caught in 40-50'...we fished from 30-60'. Talked to and saw Wes out there today and he got a couple nice halibut too.
Harrell,
We rounded the breakwater at 7 a.m. and it was already choppy...obvious there was wind outside. Wind blew 5-10 all morning on the inside and then picked up to 10-15 around 11 a.m. and by 12:30 it was a steady 15. No swell, just wind chop.
I'll be up in Oregon next Monday-Wednesday. I hope that nice weather lasts...but I doubt it. We shall see. My friend has a boat in Newport now, so hopefully the fish will come in closer there. They are 70-80 out there, but 20-30 out of Coos/Winchester. With the nice weather the water should push in. Good volume of fish up there...again:-(
I'll let you know how I do.
best fishes,
steve
PS Watch out for the pelicans at the cleaning station...they are very aggressive! Biting you and trying to steal fillets off the cleaning table!!!

Harrell,

FYI yesterday's PG&E forecast for 2-5 swell at 7-9 seconds was a little off. I fished out of PSL at the green buoy off lighthouse from 9-1130 am and had 7 to 9 foot swell at 6-7 seconds with white caps and high wind gusts by 1130 am.

http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/tideshow.cgi?site=Port+San+Luis+Wharf%2C +California

Here is a link to the accurate tides by location, PSL 1.24ft at 7:48 AM. You can also get a graphic plot of height vs. time which is great for launching, retreiving and fishing max incoming or outgoing tides. It also gives you a good idea of direction and speed at The Morro launch ramp. Put a hole in my boat once before I learned!
My boat needs about 30" of water which equates to about 1.5ft of tide at PSL dock so I can look at the graph and know when is the best time for my boat.

Weather:
Would appreciate anyone fishing today to post what the conditions were by location and time. I have been watching a couple of new computer models that appear to be good for the inside water and need data points to see how good they are. Only had John's (PG&E) report before.

We may have a shot at the outside water next tuesday if the forecast holds!
Not only does Oregon have the albacore but also good weather for the next couple of days. We will probably see some good counts from there.
Steve, what dates will be fishing ?

Thanks Steve, we'll check in with you on the water.

Both Tides.info and weatherunderground call for the -1.77 low around 7:47am.

I'm going to assume that even if that is the case, we'll still be ok to launch at the sling.

I'll be out fishing for flatties tomorrow. Hopefully up at the Pea Patch. Give me a call on the radio. "Mini-Avocation"

Well,I give up on waiting for our local winds to stop blowing. When the water is perfect the winds blow and when the wind stops blowing the water turns an ugly green. We are off to San Diego and Danna Point for some Dorado and Yellow tail action. Will post the results when we get back. Who would have thunk it that the one Albacore I caught so long ago would be the only one for the season so far and it is August.Lets hope it will be a better late summer fall action on the tuna.Hearing the reports from Oregon bring back great memories here.

I have a new engine I am breaking in and want to try a short range rock cod trip out of PSL Tuesday morning. Anybody have any good ideas on rock cod spots I could try. I will have my nephew who has never fished and it will be a real kick for him to hook up a limit of rock cod. Thanks for any assistance.

Weather;

Just checked all the wind and wave forecasts and computer models for the rest of the week. That light at the end of the tunnel, that I mentioned a few days back, is pretty weak and only for tomorrow. The rest of the week is not looking good with Gale stopping by this weekend.

Good luck Paul ! You must have the right kind of boat, fortitude and attitude!

FYI; I just received a notice of a virus going around. Be carefull what you open and lookout for a "hallmark postcard".

I am leaving Weds evening from MB on an exploratory 2-day tuna trip. I plan to run out at 8 knots, and will fish all day Thursday and Friday. If anyone wants to work together, fire up that fishing machine of yours and let's go. Conditions look right. I'll be listening to 68 and 19. Also taking bait... dinos in the bay are eating the sabiki.

Kind of a late post, but fished out of MB this morning in sloppy conditions for a slow pick at a mixed bag of treefish, coppers, chinas and gophers. The swell wasn't big,but close together and uneven.....The wind started blowing by 7:45 and we threw in the towel at 9:30 with 16 fish for the two of us.The orange and brown jig did just as well as the pink lemonade swimbait fishing in 45-75ft..I think I'll sleep in tomorrow....jeff

Thanks, that shot wqsn't there early this morning when I looked but could have missed it I do that a lot lately. Now the donut/elbow look really good both temp and chlorophyll. The inside stuff looks green and dirty. Now all we have to do is get Neptune's daughter,Gale, to co-operaate with us.

Weather/SST/Chlorophyll
Pretty good SST Shots but no chlorophyll. 60 degree water from the beach (almost) to the donut/elbow.
Might be a little light at the end of the tunnel, wind tunnel that is, about tues/wed. We'll see how that works out ?

Aloha from the Big Island. Got to fish today out of Kona. Weather was perfect. You set your spread here as you leave the harbor! Anyway we ended up with four yellowfin in the box, two lost monster marlin (actually, I am glad they got off without an extended battle) and lots of Aku (skipjack) for bait. We ran across acres of breaking skipjack in several locations, but getting the tuna up was difficult. The ones we caught we jigged at around 150 feet down. Loads of fun. I'll be back Monday. Hope the weather lays down there so I can try for tombo tuna.

It does not look too good for the offshore prospects this weekend.Even the local rockfish action could be dicey if the weather report remains as predicted...I`m off Monday for 2+ weeks of steelhead fishing and whitewater rafting in Oregon.I`m also packing a trolling rod + a bait stick in case the albies are biting off the beach at Florence or Winchester..Hopefully the longfins will show here by the time I get back.....tight lines....jeff

I hadn't even checked the bouys, but that was the info they gave me yesterday, so don't know if they went or not. I know the boat is supposed to be at least 30 feet but I will have to try and call him tomorrow and see if they were smart and didn't go.

Kevin,

I hope you are joking? There in now way they will make in a boat under 65 ft and then you would have to be crazy. 30k winds and 7 to 9ft swells is not a place to play around. I pray they turned back and are sitting in the harbor drinking beer. Pray for them tonight.

Kevin, Have your friends looked at what the weather buoys have been doing. Almost 25kts all day at Cape San Martin. How big is their boat?? With weather like this it is not very safe to come back from the donut and 1908 even in a 30 ft boat. Good way to get beat up. I hope they find them, but more importantly I hope they heed warnings.

Carl;
I was trying to be funny but obviously un-sucessfully. I have been watching that water at the elbow and the donut for a couple of weeks now hoping the wind would back off so it could be checked out.
Have not heard of anyone chasing albacore for a two weeks or so. It would be really rare for someone to bring in albacore, especially a 65lb one, with nobody knowing it except a causual bystander.
If you have pictures to post, you need to post them on another board and put the link on this site.

Alright, someone needs to fess up. The person reporting this is reliable, and he said this fish came off a sport boat. Whats the 411?

This is off the Bay Area Tuna Club website.

65lb albacore caught in Morro Bay. Co-worked saw him coming off a boat Friday taken pictures of him. Seems like fish are North and south but we seem to have this huge force field keeping them from our reach.

We had another succesful Kids at Sea trip today. This one was on the Harbor Pathfinder out of Virg's Landing (Thanks Darby, Mom, Mike and Evan). That makes three for this year so far. Today was the best fishing so far. The kids had about 7 fish around with many nice blacks and bolinas and a few nice reds mixed in. The next trip is Tues. August 5th. Also there is a charter for a church group from atascadero on Aug. 18th-this trip needs a few more volunteers. The few volunteers for this trip are all members of this report board. If anyone one else would like to be in on this one, please leave a message at 771-9873...it should be fun...no beer though. Thanks again for all of the support, this program is getting huge rapidly, and the kids are stoked every trip. Check out www.kidsatsea.org
