I fished all of my favorite spots from shore at the Ranch over the weekend for no halibut. Conditions were perfect with warm, clear water, but no fish were there. I got a great sunburn though.

Just checked the latest shots. Lots of good, clean 61 to 64 degree water from above A-Cyn to the Rod and beyond. Edges could be holding tuna and more.

Fished off Morro Bay State beach and North end of the Estero today in really sloppy conditions. The day started off well with a great mix of big anchovies and 'dines from Virg's.We tried drifting halibut in the usual spots for nada except some stray rockfish. The swell was about 7-8ft with a 10sec interval, but the wind was blowing offshore in the opposite direction. The wind kept spinning my bow into the swell, and it was impossible to get a normal drift,so we called it quits at 10:00 with a dozen mixed bolina, johnny bass, chuckleheads, and gophers...Water temp was 64.4 in the bay and soupy green....Tonnage of bait off Toro Creek and all the way up the line.......jeff

Hi John- We fished both U.S. and Mexican waters. The bulk of our action was in Mexican waters near the 302, 390, and 371-spots. Troll the small B&P jet head, mex flag zuker, 2-ounce fish traps, and some cedar wood. Make sure to secure your Mex fishing licenses as the Mex Navy was reportedly on the 302 checking privates. Sure Hope the albies make a showing up this way sooner than later but the warm water may still give us a chance before winter. Heard rumor (unconfirmed at this point) of albies being taken on the 311 outside Santa Rosa Isle.

What I'd like to see is a chlorophyl shot. Tempbreak.com hasn't had a good one in weeks.

Went up to Lake San Antonio Friday and fish till 3 in the AM. Had heard they had been boiling in the evenings, but I didn't see any boils. Using a secret weapon for night fishing caught 5 stripers, 2 big cats and lost another 5 to 10 fish (break offs or hooks pulled loose). It's not ocean fishing but still alot of fun.

A couple of boats have a couple of albacore each. one is west of the weenie and the other is out near the 601 somewhere. Now all we have to do is wait until the wind comes back down and cross our fingers. That was at 10 this mourning they could have a few more by now.

Fished the AB farm area and Cayucos.
Weather was great (no wind) with foggy to overcast skies. Was on the water till 3pm.

I found a SNUG TOP camper shell key in the lot. If anyone is missing it let me know.

Well, I'm heading down to the Hollister Ranch for the long weekend for some fishing and surfing. Last Labor Day weekend I caught the pictured WSB off a surfboard at San Augustine. What a thrill. Usually there are tons of halibut in the sandy coves. I will report on Tuesday.

We tried the Dolphin thing also, all we got was being left in their wake. Their is a lot a water to cover down their and many spots to try, the only good thing is that most of the time the water is glass and you can run full throttle to the spots. This may have been our last trip down for the year. September is looking like it will be booked with Honey Due days. Sad!!!!!

We fished out of Dana Point Monday thru Wednesday for very few fish. Hit all the high spots from the Avalon Bank all the way past the 43 but we seemed to be a day short on everything we tried. Most of the fish we heard about were being caught under/in front of the porpois but we couldn't get anything to go.
Mike is right, you have to be at the right spot at the right day AND you have to be fishing to right way. All three of those variables seem to change almost daily. Overall it was a fun trip and we learned a lot. Can't wait to get back to the reds and lings that we're used to!

Back from San Diego, fished the 43 on Monday for 9 Albacore 10-12 lb range, two 17lbs for a total of 11 fish. Tuesday went for a short boat ride at Dana Point to try some kelp patties we hit last time we went out, nothing for the morning, loaded up and headed home. It was so niece to have the reels sing on multiple hook ups on Albacore.Water was flat, blue and warm. As we put the 6 fish on board, the Coast Gurad came on and gave a Gail wind warning for Point Conception and north out 60 nautical miles. We laughed at the fact that we are landing Tuna and the wind just blows in our own fishing grounds. The fishing is good in San Dieg, but you do have to hit the right spot on the right day.

I have read this board for years, but this is my first post.I wanted to thank Tincan2 for the assistance on Sunday. One of my batteries went belly up and that drained the other one, so I was dead in the water. I also want to thank the other boat that hung out and then followed me in, I did not get a name or boat name,but thank you very much. I replaced the battery and fished 10E today {blue's and gopher's}also got three dog-fish put them back alive. Thanks again. Mike{boat's name is Ghost}

Jack, I thought for sure Monterey would have a chlorophyll. I think Tempbreak and Terrafin use diferent sensors so you would have thought one of them would have hit the window. Maybe today. That "Sailflow" that you recommended is really a great site. I validated it on two trips and had a reports of conditions on at least 8 others and it was real close about 80% of the time.

Weather: The weather looks good from now though the holiday except sunday which has a lot of gale + on the outside and probably sloppy swell/waves on the inside.

Harrel with Monterey being absoulutely gorgeous today you think we would have got a new decent chloro but it did not happen. Maybe the noon update tomorrow will have a good one. I have already made 2 longer than long runs for only one albacore. I am waiting until I see something a little more promising or a friend who has a larger boat with 400 miles of range before I run again.

Weather is subject to change without notice !!

Tomorrow thru friday is still looking pretty good but some of the models are showing sat/sun as strong winds which will mean a lot of nasty swell. Will have to see what the models/ forecasts are tomorrow. Don't think we will get a chlorophyll today, one lousy cloud hung over our tuna area all day. Monterey was clear.

Weather/SST/Chlorophyll

We should have good weather starting tomorrow thru at least sunday with some swell and maybe a little afternoon breeze. We will probably be getting good SST and chlorophyll shots today. Yesterdays SST show a good break along the 34:50 line from 25 to 50 miles out of Avila. No chlorophyl so don't if it is clean.

Fished out of Morro yesterday on the Wakefish for two limits of rock cod and two nice Lings. It was a very bumpy ride up north to Cambria but worth the effort. The bite was good all day and the amount of bait in the water was incredible. Visibility was poor in some spots and by the end of the day we could see the shoreline. I will be out next week. Good fishing to all!!!

Marti and Will,
Thanks for showing us how it is done.
Please post asome pictures of you guys with your boats so next time I see you on the water I will know exactly where the fish are. It is great to see nice fish like these being taken. They might not pull like a Albacore but they eat great and don't require the fuel investment. Keep up the good work.

Fished all day Sunday out of MB from about 1-4 miles North of the bay inlet. We were about 3 miles North in about 50ft when my daughter who is 15 and has only been fishing twice hooked up with a decent 28" halibut. I high fived her so hard I almost knocked her out of the boat:-) Other than the one, really slow no other bumps or racks...Great mix of dines and chovies from Doug. Pic makes me proudDaughter's First Halibut

what probably broke you guys off have have been the large schools of pinback sharks and leapards that have been in the area. in the past month we have caught and lost around 30 with lots of gear lost. good job on the flattys guys.

Wow...nice flattie. I haven't found the halibut to be leader shy at all. I've been using 30# for the past 3 years and I'm pretty happy with the number of halibut that I catch. Plus I haven't broken off a big fish during that time:-) Those big halibut and lings certainly have the teeth to chomp through light line!
just my 2 cents

steve

Steve,
I was using 15# Maxima Ultragreen leaders, but I had tied them a few years ago. It really pays to use fresh line. I should have known better.

Greetings,
Wow...glad the halibut bite was good up North...kinda slow out of PSL. Fished in the skiff up at the pea patch for 0 halibut, but two keeper lings and several nice rockfish. Got blown inside around 11:30 and managed 2 22.5" halibut on the inside. Nice in the morning, but the switch sure turned on @ 11 a.m.
Saw some sunfish eating jellies...strange sighting!
What pound leader are you guys using? I use 30# floro! Used to use lighter, but got tired of getting bit off. Sounds like fun. Nice work on the 40" butt!!! Wow:-)
best fishes,
steve

Fished Cayucos today. Got a great mix of Dines and Choves from Virg's. Started south of Abalone farm area and drifted east. Nice day on the water good drift. Nailed a keeper flatty
early on then some assorted rockfish. Got another 28" flatty and a keeper ling. Then it was slow for awhile, then something peeled about 40 yds off my reel in a full bendo!drag was set correctly but it broke me off! don't know what it was, but it was big. Then it was slow for
an hour, then we hooked up big. After a 10 minute battle we burried the gaff on a monster 40" at least 30# ( no scale big enough on board)Halibut. The biggest one that I have seen in a LONG time. Fun time was had by all.

I fished Saturday off the Abalone farm for halibut. Great day. I landed close to 20 ling cod, four of which were legal. Kept one. Had on three very large fish that had me completely bent. Two leaders broke at the knot and one large 'but showed before shaking the hook and saying goodbye. Great bait from Morro. There are some good fish out there. I fished in 60-80' of water along the edge of rock piles and then went inside north of the pier and fished 20-40'. Had one major fish on in the last kelp above the pier.
Will out.

Matt, Thanks for the SD report. Sounds like an awesome trip on an awesome ride. I think that I will try to head down the first part of Sept. since the weather and water don't want to cooperate up here. Love the ocean conditions down that way.

Anyone else thinking of taking a trip south want to buddy boat around the second week of Sept.?

Mike, Let us know how you do on your trip. Good luck and fair seas.

John

San Diego fish report- Went last weekend with a few friends on a 46 Bertram out of SD for two great days of fishing. We were just on the east side of the butterfly and put the jigs in at first light. 30 min later a quad hookup on albacore from 20-25 lbs. No bait fish on that stop. Jigs in again for 10 min and a hookup on a nice yellowtail, bait stop on that one produced 3 dorado and another YT. Trolled some more for nada so we stopped and put out a chum line of cut deans and started getting nice quality albi and bluefin. Big albi was close to 50lbs. Ended that day with 9 Albi, 1 Bluefin, three Dorado, and 2 Yellowtail. Next day worked the same are for a small dorado on the jigs. started chunking and raised some nice quality Yellowfin. Smallest was about 30lbs and the biggest was about 50lbs. sometimes had two fish going at a time. final score for the second day was 8YFT, 1 Albi, and 1 BFT. Goodtime

Just got back to Cayucos from Oregon last night...Took an icechest with 4 steelhead #12-15lbs to Ruddell's smokehouse in Cayucos this morning, and cannot wait to pick up Jim's finished product next week.My family has been vacationing in Oregon evry summer for the last 5 years, but the fishing this year exceeded all expectations..The steelhead and trout were on the chew in every river or stream we fished.Even my 5 year old twins put together back to back 25-35 fish days on wet flies....If anyone is intersted in getting some info on excellent fishing a lot closer than Alaska,I will gladly share the names of all my guide buddies and the best times/locations to catch salmon and steelhead...They are expecting a big fall chinook run on the Rouge,N. Umpqua, and Siuslaw river systems next month, and a larger run of winter steelhead....The Oregonians are a smart bunch who manage their fisheries rather than prohibit fishing....Well,I guess its back to rockfish for now....jeff

The weather looks great for Saturday but the SST shows dirty water out to 50 mi and no real temp breaks. So it looks like another rockfish weekend.

Jack,
I have to agree about the courage of going out 100 miles in a 16ft boat. I have fished out of Monterey and when the wind comes up, I find my balls deep in my throat. I fish on a 26ft boat and have had to scrape my shorts a few times being out there and the wind and swell comes up.Be carefull coming back into Monterey with a north and south swell. It will suck you under in a hurry. But I give you all of the High Fives for the effort. You may want to try going south to Sandiego or Danna Point. The fishing is off the hook now and the run is as little as three miles from port.We went last week and picked up 13 Dorados, 1 25 albacore and 2 25lb yellow tails in 1 1/2 days. They are hooking Yellow fin, Blue Fin, Marlins, and even an occasion wahoo.Calm waters. We are going down again on Monday and Tuesday.Long truck ride, but a real short boat ride and you will never know what you will hook!!! I will post the results.
