Fly fished around Spirit of Santos island. North wind made finding yellowtail & sierra tough, 3'-4' swells all day. Did get into some yellow snappers...mmmm. Although not great fighters the puffer & trumpet fish made things interesting. Squid patterns & blue-yellow/white clousers worked. Saw many sardinas around.

!Hola Amigos!

I just returned from "el paraiso" this week and I have to say that the fishing, the weather and the experience was the best I have had in over twenty years in April...

My husband and I each caught and released two 20-35 pound roosters in twenty minutes along with 3 Jack Crevalles not more than a few yards off the beach right in front of the hotel! Our friends, Randy and
MAry Goins of San Diego also caught 5 roosters and lost several yellowtail on the super panga right next to us.

Other Guests were catching sierra, cabrilla, dorado, yellow fin and pompano at the South end of Cerralvo, ten minutes from our shores. Live bait (sardinas) was being purchased or made at the Island and was plentiful for our pangueros and guests.

We continue to offer the best trained and experienced captains to our guests. Our native fly guides are now recognized as the best in Baja, California, Sur, Mexico.

Come and see us this season, we now have access to some really low airfares on most days into Los Cabos at $197 round-trip per person.

Saludos from all of us in Baja at Las Arenas,

Linda

Hola everyone!

The fishing is wide open right now for Dorado and Wahoo!! Typical and plentiful fall fishing in our area. Yellow fin tuna are also around. With guests just returnin this week, we only had ten rooms sold as I write this week's report which is for the week ending October 10th...and still Our angler's caught 42 Dorado-largest 38 pounds, with the average Dorado in the 25 pound range. Wahoo are averaging 50 pounds and we caught 15 this week alone!

Yellow fin in the 25 pound range are also being caught.

We have almost a full house next week, I can't wait to see the tally's then.

I'd like to thank on behalf of the resort staff and those of us in the travel and tourism industry all of you who are continuing to travel, for your support. Your business is our lifeblood and we don't take you for granted.

In terms of travel values: we are seeing airfare at $218 round-trip including taxes from LAX to LA PAZ, even for the holiday perios. If you would like information on how to book the lowest fares, etc. please call our office and we can check all availability for you for these prices while you are on the phone with just a few clicks of our mice.

Hurricane Update and Information

Dear Amigos:

Thanks to all of you who called and sent e-mails expressing concern about the hotel, staff and their families. Everyone, thank goodness is just fine.

Last Saturday September 29th, we notified arriving guests that we would like for them to postpone their trip due to the storm. Those guests who were at the hotel already chose to remain and were well taken care of with all restaurant services functioning normally throughout the worst hurricane weather thanks to our wonderful staff including Gabriel,
Don Jose Pepe and Porfirio.

Las Arenas Resort was closed to newly arriving guests for 3 days only after Hurricane Juliette. The hotel has been open again since October 4th and did not sustain damage other than a few tiles here and there which are being replaced. All facilities are functioning normally. The road to and from the hotel via highway 286 is passable. As we started receiving guests again on October 4th, our first fishing report post storm will be next week.

Once again, we offer our appreciation to those guests who have so kindly rebooked their dates with us. The good news is that the hotel seems to have a lot of patriotic folks who are continuing with their travel plans on schedule. We are ready for all of you and very happy to have you with us.

Subject: Fishing and Traveler's Updates

Dearest Amigos:

Today I send you a fishing report as well as travel information that is affecting our destination of Peace "The city of La Paz." We will be posting
daily on our website the latest travel updates and information as we receive them , so please look at our "Travel Update" as often as you like.

Important to know are the new restrictions on travelers who are not of American or Mexican descent, the latest fishing license and fishing regulations as well as how to re-confirm your flights. On our site is a press release on the airport restrictions as well. Fell free to copy the travel update information only for redistribution.

Some of our guests have been asked to show proof of their fishing license in San Diego after crossing the border with their fish on the U.S. side. I was at the PESCA office to purchase licenses for 28 of our guests this week and there was a line out the door of angry fishermen who had been stopped on the waters off San Diego by officials who were requesting them as well.

I suspect the same will hold true at LAX as well although I cannot say when.

The agent I spoke to here in San Diego said that the spot checking is happening all over.

We are catching Dorado, Roosterfish, Wahoo, Tuna, Pargo and Cabrilla and our guests are having a marvelous time.

Wishing you and yours all the best during these difficult times.

Subject: august 17 report from Fishermen's Fleet in La Paz

A week with a little more weather, and a few more characters has kept things
from being at all routine down here in Paradise South. We began the week
with the 3B's led by Bill Sherman out of SoCal. These 3 guys always have a
good time down here, but this time they did particularly well on Tuna, and
had some nice Dorado as well. The Dorado action has shifted into the
Cerralvo Island channel, with the buoys there holding some fish to 45
pounds. Some days the bite has been early, some days late, you just have to
keep making the rounds until they find you. Walt Zimmerlin and his group
were down courtesy of Harry Gualco's Rod and Reel Adventures Agency and did
very well on Dorado and Tuna as well. In every group someone has to show off
and Hugh Smith did just that in Walt's group. A nice Pargo and a 20 kilo
Roosterfish rounded out Hugh's catch, just to show that other species are
around. In that vein one of Mr. Halcovich's group, a young man no more than
11 or 12 years old I'd guess, caught an 80 pound Wahoo early in the week.
Mr. Halcovich was directed to us by Lynn Rose Travel, and that young man was
a happy camper. This is the first Wahoo we've seen in a long time, and while
I don't believe that it signals the start of anything special, it was none
the less a "Fish of the Week" contender. Joe Sandor, his son Chris and a
couple of their friends were down from Phoenix and did very well on Tuna and
Dorado. The Tuna have been holding both at the south point of Cerralvo, and
just a mile west of the Punta Arena light. This has been most convenient as
there have been a couple of days this week when distant Tropical Storms have
thrown some swells and wind our way. Nothing horrible, but they do limit
mobility, and having those Tuna right out in front, and the Dorado in the
channel, has worked out very well. Brandy and Barney Brookbank came down
from San Jose to sample the fishing and cultural events, and did a little
better on the fishing. Dorado and Tuna once again had Mr. Brookbank's ice
chest bulging (well not quite, but close). And winning this week's award for
Traveled the Furthest, Bobby Lee, his dad and two brothers came down from
Huntsville, Alabama. These guys have fished in Guatemala and Venezuela and
now La Paz. They are seasoned traveler's and proved themselves accomplished
fishermen by taking a mess of Yellowfin and some nice Dorados (or Dolphin as
they are called back east) back to Huntsville. It seems as though the nicest
guys always do the best on the fishing, but then all of our customers are
nice guys, and gals.
Christopher, Juan, Enrique and I are going to participate in the Felix
Tournament this weekend. This is the biggest tourney in La Paz (sort of like
the highest spot in Ohio, oh well) and we've got my boat, the "Christin-a"
back in the water and properly shaken down. I'm still not sure about this
tournament thing, but they are pretty big events in a fishing town like this
one, and that old Testostorone (in my case pretty old) starts to bubbling
and competition has its attractive aspecst. Oh well, we'll see what happens,
it should be fun, and I'll get back to you on the results next week. That
about does it for now, just one last question, which one of those two guys
are you gonna end up voting for? Enough said,
Have fun, David Jones.

Subject: Fish report from La Paz August 10th,

Fishermen's Fleet with David Jones.....Another very nice week here in La Paz. With the exception of one day this
week, last Saturday we had a storm front move through and the boats came in
early, the weather has been hot (to 100), humid, and light breezes have kept
the whole thing in the "not so bad" zone. The fishing has been very good to
excellent with Tuna and Dorado dominating the catch. The week began with
some excellent Dorado and Sailfish action as experienced by Ed and Chris
Luna, from out near Hemmett California. They have been coming for many years
and had what they said was one of their best trips ever. Dorado to almost 50
pounds, one day surrounded by a pack of 10 Sailfish, and Tuna to 70 pounds
rounding out the catch. Rich Conway and his group of intrepid fire fighters
from the Los Angeles area did very well on Sunday and Monday on Tuna to 60
pounds and some Dorado to 30. The Punta Arena light, El Faro Viejo at the SE
corner of Cerralvo, and the area a couple of miles off the SW corner of
Cerralvo are all holding Tuna right now. Jim and Kay Stark came down from
Phoenix to enjoy some fishing before Kay has to start teaching school again
next week. After enduring the weather glitch on Saturday they had 2 good
days with Javier. While all of this action was going on at Cerralvo the John
Dillen Sportfishing Co. was heading out of La Paz bay with Capt. Juan. They
had a couple of good days for Dorado and Tuna up north on the west side of
Espiratu Santo and one phenominal day of Dorado fishing that was topped by a
52 pound (that's on a scale) Bull that's no bull.
Looking ahead we've got Yellowtail Mackerel starting to school off the
island and that should signal the start of some Wahoo action in a couple of
weeks if they hold. The big Marlin are starting to show themselves outside
as the water warms, and the Sailfish are starting to show closer and closer
to shore as the bait and water temps in close become more to their liking.
It's good and getting better, come on down.

Subject: Fish report for August 2nd from La Paz, Baja Ca.

A really good week down here. Good weather, good fishing, good customers,
just all around good. Well let me hang my sweater on the hook by the door
and we'll detail some of the recent happenings in the neighborhood.
The week began with Ray Alvarado, Jim O'Brian (a very retiring guy) and
their group down from the greater Los Angeles area. They did very well on
Tuna with some Dorado, and in fact were overloaded when it came time to
depart. The Tuna have been coming from the old light house on the island,
the south point of the island, and in front of the Punta Arena light. Dead
bait, live bait, iron, they've all been working. The fish have been in the
30-75 pound range with a solid 50 pound average. Jim and Ray had found their
way down here through Cass Tours, and went home all Tunaed out. At the same
time we had Srs. Bonno and Hood down from Los Angeles as well, although they
came via Harry Gualco at Rod and Reel adventures. They did equally well,
with a large amount of Tuna, which ended up causing a problem for them upon
their return that both Harry and I thought that you ought to know about.
They were flying on Aero Mexico and were charged for overweight luggage, to
the tune of $100 a piece. We are used to the very reasonable treatment that
we have received over the years from Aero Cal on this issue, but beware,
they have rules too. I think that it makes more sense to carry 2 smaller
(48-54 quart) chests than one large (100 qt) one as you have more
flexibility, and I've had better luck with additional pieces over the years
than with overweight. Be forewarned, it's not the perfect ending to a great
fishing trip. Joe Fredericks and his boys made the trip down from Minnesota
(no they didn't bring Jesse) and did well on Tuna and Dorado, with a few
Pargo thrown in. Steve Holguine and his group from Los Angeles came to town
for their first trip to La Paz. They are used to a yearly trip to Loreto,
but Mary and the girls from Cass Tours suggested La Paz, and they are
already talking about returning to La Paz next year. They did very well on
Tuna and yesterday had a great day on Dorado. La Paz it is. We ended the
week with Bill Osborne and his group from Phoenix and surrounding areas. On
Monday they filled up on Tuna. They then had a couple of really good days on
Dorado with yesterday being the best. Fish to 40 pounds were taken on the
buoys (in the channel and outside) and the ice chests were once again full
upon departure.
Ol' Capt. Juan has been doing well on the Bajo as well. He was out with
Chris and Ed Luna yesterday and had 6 Tuna to 75 pounds. This week he has
scored consistently on Dorado west of Ballena Island, and has been seeing
some large Marlin along Espiritu Santo and at the Bajo. A day with Juan is
not quite like any other.
Have Fun,

Subject: Fish report from Fishermen's Fleet La Paz July 26

TUNA, TUNA, TUNA. This last week, and particularly the last 3 or 4 days has
witnessed some of the best Yellowfin Tuna fishing that we've seen this year.
We began the week taking fish to 60 pounds at the north end of Cerralvo and
some fish to 40 pounds at the south end. There have also been swarms of 5-12
pounders in front of Muertos Bay. This worked well, with the Tuna taking
live bait, dead bait, dead bait with sinkers, Rapalas, Iron, almost
everything, well we didn't catch any on Banjo Minnows, but you never know.
Towards the end of the week a large school of fish to 80 pounds appeared at
Punat Arenas, about 2 miles from out launching site. Those ice chest have
been heavy the last few days. When tired of Tuna (there are those that
experience this phenomenon, but not I) our fishermen have been going out on
the buoys for Dorado. This has been variable with fish taken every day, but
some days being spectacular and others only OK. There are still large fish
out there, with some this week to 45 pounds. Sardines and small feathers
have been the two ways to go. While on the buoys we have taken a lot of
Sailfish this week. Pods of 4-6 fish are not uncommon, with the fish being
in the 50-80 pound range. Almost all of our clients this week were
practicing catch and release, and I'd like to thank them for that. Marlin
are in the area with Stripers, Blues, and Blacks all around right now. A few
Wahoo have been sighted by the commercial guys, and I think that we may be a
couple of weeks away from a bona fide Wahoo bite. Stay tuned on that one.
Weather and bait are both doing very well, and we are generally firing on
all cylinders down here.
Well, as I mentioned last week Capt. Juan and I ventured out on a 2 day
Marlin tournament last weekend, without Christopher as he is up stalking the
wiley Abalone with Merle and Pat in Gualala. We did not do very well. 2 days
of drowning bait and stareing at jigs and we had a Sailfish and a Dorado to
show for it. There were not a lot of Marlin caught, with only 12 for 75
boats for 2 days. But the quality made up for the quantity. The winning fish
was a Blue of 785 pounds, and the second place fish over 600. Big ol' fish.
I think that Juan and I have as much talent and experience between us as
anyone (with Juan providing 90% of both) but there is such a large degree of
randomness involved in finding the fish that it makes for tough sledding
sometimes. But I'm ready for the next one (August), Bobo (Chris) will be
here, and hope springs eternal. "Deal", cried the losers.

Have Fun,
David Jones

Subject: La Paz fishing report from Fishermen Fleet July 20

Now it's starting to feel like summer. We've had a moist week down here,
with no rain, just lots of perspiration. Temps have been at or above 100 and
the humidity has not been oppressive, but it's on the rise. Winds have been
mild and from the south generally, bringing us warmer waters and the fishes
that go with them. Bob Glenn and a group from The Idaho Angler (good
website, and there's a guy up there named Dennis Spaulding who puts the
trips together, and might even get to go fishing himself someday) have been
here for a few days already, whipping the water to a frenzy with their fly
rods (and using conventional tackle as well) They have done very well on
Tuna at the north point with fish to 50 pounds and Dorados on the buoys to
25 pounds. Bob was into a school today that ended up breaking one of his fly
rods ("They weren't all that large, only 15-20 pounds, but there were so
many of the darn things I think that the rod just got tired"). Joe Merola
and his fellow SoCal firefighters warmed up on some Tuna yesterday and then
scored big on the Dorado as well today with fish to 45 pounds coming from
the buoys. A good number of Sailfish to 130 pounds have been hooked and most
of them released this week as well. A few Blue Marlin are also starting to
show as the water warms up. We've seen sporadic Wahoo this week(they're in
the same family as the random Wahoo)and have even hooked a couple (long
distance release) I wouldn't say that the Wahoo bite is big time, yet.
Rooster fish are still hitting along the beaches, with old Rooster Fish Bill
besting and releasing 2 25 kilo fish today. A fine summer week in La Paz,
and Punto Arena is starting to do it's thing in earnest. At the Bajo, Capt.
Juan has been doing his thing on Dorado, with good results. Fish to 45
pounds have been coming regularly on the weed lines and current breaks. He
hasn't fished Tuna in a couple of weeks so we have no idea as to Tuna
fishing up north. He has started to see a bunch of Marlin. He and I are
going to participate in a Tournament from La Paz this weekend and I will
report on that next week. We are guardedly confident, but will be without
our trusted 3rd man Chris "Bonk 'em Boy" Jones who is exploring the northern
California coast at this very time with Merle and Pat Schreiner of Gualala
fame. We will struggle on without him, but it won't be the same. Until next
week,
Have Fun,

Subject: La Paz report for the 4th..

Ah, the La Paz Pops were out in force, playing
those stirring Mexican military marches, well, not really, but we did have
an historic election down here. We finally seem to have figured out how to
do a bloodless revolution. Congratulations to the people of Mexico. This
won't fix everything in the next two weeks, but it is a big step in the
right direction. Should be a lesson to our NAFTA neighbors to the north
about all the good things that can happen when you turn off the :@#$%* TV
and get out and vote.
And now for fishing. Another variable week, with some days loaded with large
(40+) Dorado on the buoys and the next it's a ghost town out there. We've
had some very good action as Kay and Gary Stamp from up Portland way can
attest. These two dedicated public school teachers (and fine examples of
this vanishing breed they are) come every year about this time and fish for
6 days. We just loaded out their ice chests, full to the brim with Dorado
and Tuna. The Tuna have been hitting on Sardines, live and dead both. The
littler ones (15-35 pounds) have come from the south point of Cerralvo,
while bigger ones (25-70) have been coming from La Reynita, on the west side
of Cerralvo. Vytas Kerpe (watch that spelling!) and his group from
Sheboygan, Wisc. had good luck on both Tuna and Dorado with 3 of their 4
days being excellent, and the 4th just a reference point by which to know
which direction excellent lays. They even had a 40 pound Wahoo and a few
Pargo to add variety. Darryl Bearson, Brian Withers, and the boys from
Minnesota are in the middle of their trip and have done well on Tuna and
Dorado, but a 60 pound Dog Snapper has been the center piece of their trip
so far. Lorren Rucker of Los Angeles was down fishing with Juan late last
week, and had enough Tuna and Dorado to warrant returning again tomorrow.
We've had a smattering of Sailfish and Striped Marlin on both sides, but no
great swarming of billfish to date. Things just aren't wide open yet, but
are doing pretty well, with more summer fish showing up on the southerly
breezes. Bait has not been a problem, and even though we've had a bit more
wind than we are accustomed to (mostly from the south and in the AM) the
temps have been into the high 90's and low 100's during the PM. A good week,
and we look forward to a great week coming up.

Subject: Fish report for June 28th

This is the report for June 28, 2000:

Well, I got your good news, and I got some of the other kind as well. Let's
get the less good stuff out of the way first. The fishing slowed some these
last few days. Where full ice chests (and then some) were the rule last week
we are running more like 80% this week. What to attribute this to? Hard to
really tell, the water has been clearing since Carlotta went by although it
is still a little cooler than normal. Maybe it's that Jim Stader and the
boys from Central California caught them all. Those guys sure packed some
ice chests heading out last weekend. No good scuses Lucy, we'll just muddle
through. So as not to paint a completely bleek picture we have had some
excellent days, and some outstanding fish this week. The Dorado on the buoys
have averaged in the low 30's with several fish in the solid 50+ pound
bracket. Somedays it's five of these bruisers for a boat, other days 5 less
than that. Tuna have been sporadic, with the north point giving up some big
numbers of 35-50 pound fish early in the week and then slowing. A few Tuna
to 25 pounds have come from the south point of Cerralvo and some more along
the shore from Punta Perico to Muertos. Mr. Peterson of the recently
departed Hada Expedition had a great day on Sailfish with a pod of 6-8 fish
entertaining he and his wife right around the boat, with a couple on the end
of the line as well. Bill Mathias of Tucson was down for one of his regular
Roosterfish visits and landed a 45 Kilo fish (100 pounds) on his customary
20 pound line. Members of the Richard Rosen party from greater El Lay had a
rooster that went 80 pounds today, and a couple of 45 pound Mahi as well.
So, not a ton of fish, but some nice big ones and the fishermen who work out
a good action plan with their skipper and are patient are bringing in some
very respectable numbers. Bait is plentiful up the island, but that hasn't
helped the guys that want to get going out to the buoys, as it's in the
wrong direction. People have been buying some from the commercial guys, but
that is not consistent with our policy of "bait included", so for now we
have contracted with a commercial panga to deliver bait for our boats bound
for the buoys in order to save time and gas. The weather has been good with
temps a little lower than you would expect for June but the winds have been
mild, and the nights just a little cool. Perfecto.
Have Fun,Jason. Visit us at www.fishermensfleet.com

Subject: June 22 report

Happy belated Father's Day out there for all of you fatherly types. I was
given Hurricane Bud for my Father's Day gift. On the upside, it wasn't too
close and it did drop some much needed rain. On the other hand we had some
medium sized swells, cooler water was around due to the turbulence, and a
lot of particulate matter resulted in pretty poor water clarity as well.
That, coupled with a healthy dose of swamp gas, the tail end of a full moon,
and Pisces entering the house of El Sorrio resulted in some days that were
not up to the high standards we had been generating last week.
At the end of last week David Goode and his wife Mary, from Minnesota,
accompanied by Glenn and Marge Trembley from Omaha, and Phil and Jean
Ewaniki from New York state finished their trip on a high note when David
and Glenn went out to the Bajo with Capt. Juan. Limits of Yellowfin Tuna to
just shy of 100 pounds and one nice Dorado (mas o menos 20 kilos) more than
topped off ice chests already straining with Dorado, Pargo, and more Tuna
that they had been taking at Cerralvo during the week. They asked that their
surplus fish be given to Ciudad de Los Ninos, a well known orphanage here in
La Paz, and we followed through on their request. Muchas Gracias for the
generosity. Jim and Dinnene Jensen and their friends and family were down
from Salt Lake last week as well and after a couple of slow days did very
well and went home ice chests equally corpulent. Then the weekend came, the
barometer thrashed wildly, and along with the other aforementioned
scientific excuses, this caused the fishing to tail off. Pargo and Amberjack
were still coming from the island, as well as a few Tuna, and even the
occaisional Dorado, but definitely slow, even for accomplished fisherfolk
like Steve Smith and his group from the greater Lompocian area. Yesterday,
Tuesday, things started to brighten, probably due to the arrival of Howard
Hada and his group of Laker fans from Los Angeles. We started to see better
catches of Yellowfin from the south point of Cerralvo, a few nice Lisas from
the Piedra Traversada area, and even a couple of 20 pound Dorado. Jim Parker
and his group of Dads and kids from Riverside county, California had an OK
day yesterday with a few Tuna, Snapper, and one Dorado. Today they did real
well, as the bite improved again. Several very nice Dorado, including a 65
pounder taken by Jim Pastorino of Santa Rosa, Ca. were taken on the buoys,
and Mr. Smith and his group started to dent the Yellofin population with
several fish to 50 pounds. Dr. Larry Allen, of Fred Hall Show salt water
fish tank fame, was out today and they did very nicely, with Tuna, Pargo (2
kinds), Amberjack, and even a couple of Roosters to round out the bag. These
were mostly taken on bigger baits at the south point. Another result of the
storm was that the rough water and barometric fluctuations flustered the
baitfish, and bait has been a little harder to come by. As the water settles
I am certain that the Sardinia will regroup and we'll be getting them as
easily as we were last week. We've had lots of customer pictures coming in
lately, and if you'd like to see them (maybe you're there!), check out
www.fishermensfleet.com and take a gander. Another storm appears to be
winding it's way up the west coast, and we'll just have to see. Stay Tuned
and Have Fun,
David Jones

This is the fishing report for June 14, 2000:

When last we spoke I was anticipating the arrival of Gene Burrelson and the
Gridley Gang, including $2 Al Molinari and son Greg. They arrived in a
flurry of $2 bills and went fishing. A good week on Tuna to 50 pounds,
Dorado to 50 pounds, and some Snapper to 35 pounds. Right on the heels of
these fishing Masters came Ted Howell and his gang from Longview,
Washington. Ted is a steelhead and salmon guide in Washington and was down
on a busmans' holiday. He and his boys (including one in a very strange
fishing hat) did very well on Dorado to 60 pounds, Tuna to 45, Dog Snapper
to 35, a few Roosters, and the only Wahoo(35 pounds) that we took all week.
David Goode, Glenn Trembley, and Indiana Ewaniki along with respective
better halves Mary, Marge, and Jean, came down from the land of Jesse
Ventura (via Omaha for Glenn and Marge) and have been catching Dorado and
Tuna steadily for 4 or 5 days now. Glenn and I went out for our annual
Rooster fish Day and got one Dog Snapper about 27 pounds and then Glenn took
a Rooster at 60+ pounds. He beat me this year, but being a S.F. Giant fan I
am used to "Wait until next year!" Paul and Dinnenne Jensen have a large
group of Utonians (we figured out that's what people from Utah are), and
they and the kids have been denting the Tuna population seriously. As you
can tell we have a good variety of fishes, with excellent size to them right
now. We aren't getting spectacular numbers, but are at limits and full ice
chests. Bait is in very good supply with Sardines working on the Tuna and
Dorado and Ladyfish being the best for Dog Snapper and the Roosters. The
weather has been good, with temps at or above 100 most every afternoon and
cooling to 70 or so in the evening. Winds have mostly been light, with
direction changing daily. Water temps are rising, and are currently in the
high 70's. Things go well here in La Paz, it's time to come fishing.Post again next week.....

Subject: La Paz weekly fish report

June 7, 2000:

June is here, and all is well in La Paz. The weather has been trying it's
best to be summer, with temps at 100 during the day (but cooling well in the
evening) and most of the days being flat calm with a slight breeze from the
south. Tuesday was bumpy in the morning with an east wind coming from the
fronts over the mainland but generally the weather has been spectacular. The
fishing has had it's moments too, with the worst days being none too bad. We
started the week with Bill Mathias from Tucson doing his Roosterfish thing
again. Bill averaged 3 fish a day over a 7 day period, with the average size
at 25 kilos and the largest at 35 kilos. We've got a lot of big Roosters
right now, in all the usual places. Ladyfish has been the key. For Tuna, the
right place has been off the south end of Cerralvo. Some days it's 4 fish
per boat, somedays it's 14, but they're all in the 25-45 pound class with a
random 60 now and then. Sardines and Mackerel will both do the trick. Dorado
have been coming regularly on the buoys. Don Woll and Don Shimp of beautiful
Hesperia (a suburb of Hemmett) were down here and did very well on Dorado to
45 pounds. Don had been coming to The Fishermen's Fleet for 10 years and
said, "This is the best trip we've ever had." For those of you that don't
know Don, that's landmark praise from a guy who has been here a bunch and
doesn't throw compliments around wildly. Sab Horiba and his group from Los
Angeles was down next and they put a healthy dent in the Dorado and Tuna
poplulations while also scoring on some Dog Snapper and some of the huge
Pargo Lisas that are still around. The usual places for Dog Snapper are
producing on Lady fish and Mackerel with Pargo to 45 pounds, and the
remaining Lisas are at the south point of Cerralvo. They will take Sardines
or Mackerel and will hit 80 pound line as well. At least with 80 you have a
fighting chance as these guys go to 60 pounds (current IGFA record is 29 and
change). Jim Dwight and his family in from Phoenix put the hurt on Dorado
led by grandson Ryan on his first trip to La Paz. John Kinderkinecht and his
group of swarthy bucaneers from Visalia are well remembered by the Tuna
community for the amount of their members lost to John's first trip to La
Paz. And right now we have Gene Burrelson and his group from Gridley, Ca.
(sister city to La Paz) and their full report will be put in next week. A
few Sails and Marlin caught colaterally with the Tuna and Dorado round out a
very full week. Lots of boats, lots of fish, lots of happy fishermen.
Have Fun,
David Jones
