nice fish steve.looks bigger than 30. we fished up by the ab farm also and caught a 35lb flattie in the morning then decided to move down to cayucos to look around in the 60 ft stuff and caught two more,29lb and a 27lb.lost a much bigger fish a few feet from the boat. and another to the weeds. heard of lots of big fish caught today.water in the morning was a bit sloppy,got better in the late morning, then a little wind in the afternoon.bait from virges was good. not wide open but if you put your time in, move around a bit, there's a great shot at a nice grade of halibut.

Hello all,

Fished north of the ab farm (and the mob) for 3 'buts out of 4 hooked. Nothing huge, just some oversized sand dabs. Biggest was 12#. Seemed like it got better after noon...

Glad you got a nice one Steve, and glad for everyone else too. Seems like we don't get too many hot 'but or seabass bites around here anymore, so it was good that so many folks got to get in on it. Kinda reminds me of a good salmon bite, only here everyone was drifting the same direction instead of criss-crossing paths!!

get em while they're hot!

Paul

Greetings,
Fished the Ab Farm area with Pablo and Murray in the Ceviche today. Got a light 1/2 scoop from Billy Boy and headed up at 7 a.m.
Drifted until 3 p.m. for 1 keeper halibut and 1 short. Fortunately the 1 keeper was 40 some inches and 30 pounds! Also got 2 keeper lings, several shorts, and many nice bolina.
Very nice day on the water with enough wind for a good drift all day long. Sounded like most boats got at least 1 monster today.
Here's the fish.
best fishes,
steve

Weekend weather/ tuna;

No recent SST/Chlorophyll so the only area that looks promising, based on this weeks reports, is the area south of us about 70nm including Arguello canyon. The area out to 50nm has been worked by several boats this week for nothing except the one fish Oneida B caught last thursday. There were some bonito caught.

All the forecasts/models for this area indicate 10-15 kts with the afternoon being the strongest and 5-6ft , relatively short period seas. Not good for a comfortable ride home from the south. Sunday may be a little better.

That's great news on the albies gang. If I lived anywhere near Morro I certainly wouldn't be sitting on the fence right now. Latest SST looks right.

I'm down south and just returned from running out to the 43 Fathom off the San Diego coast. 3 of us onboard worked the paddies, terns, and porpoise for 25 yellowfin tuna and 4 dorado. Many tuna came on slow trolled fish traps at 6-kts, 2 ounce head in Chn Isle Chovie and 30-lb fluro leaders. Tuna avg 20 to 30-lbs. Left 'em biting and lost one slug close to 50#.

Paul,

Mike Hagans on the Onieda B went out on Thursday, found some nice blue 68 degree clear water and caught a nice albacore in the 20lb range on a fish trap but nothing came on bait, there was a lot of life, birds, dolphins and we metered schools of fish but only got the one strike. We came back in about 10 miles and saw a temp break and bird activity and started trolling again. We got a triple strike and caught two nice bonita in the 15lb range but no more albacore. he would have posted but left for LA within minutes of getting home.

Albacore;
Got a couple reliable reports of albacore in that water to the south of us. One fish at 47 miles and 6 fish at 67 miles out of Morro and ten miles closer out of Avila. If you look at yesterday's Tempbreak or Terrafin you will see slight break/plume around the 34:55 line and 121:20. This would be a good area to start and work south from there.

Dingus- To find the abb farm just go north of Cayucos and you will see a green bouy, It is best to there with live bait. When you get to the bouy throw several scoops of bait in the water,this will bring lots of birds which is good because a big brown talking pelican will land on the bouy,just ask him where the abb farm is. Just kidding - the area is pretty big you have to drift in and out of kelp all day. It starts just south of point Estero all the way down to the cons bouy.The abb farm is in between. Good luck

Well, I guess if you fish long enough, it will happen. I was blessed with the biggest halibut of my life this afternoon off the abalone farm. We were on our way back from San Simeon with near limits of big reds and decided to do a halibut drift after we rounded Point Estero. We stopped in 65 feet of water somewhere off the farm, but we could not see land. I had a solid hit and a totally bent fight. Travis was able to gaff the fish as it rose from the depths and we were screaming as it hit the deck. It was huge! When we got back to Morro Bay it was weighed. 42 pounds! Ten pounds better than my best effort so far.Could not believe the thickness of the fillets. Jamie took a picture with his cell phone. I hope it comes out. Time for a cervesa! Thanks to Travis for the ride on the Hooker.

I went on a 2-day on the Sea Aventure 80 out of San Diego this week. Came upon our first kelp patch at 7:00 am on Wednesday - day one. Stayed on it for 2 1/2 hours non stop action. 23 customers, 70+ yellow fin on the first stop. Came upon our second kelp patch at 11:00 am and it was a repeat. Another 2 hour non-stop rush and another 60+ yellow fin. There was an occasional dorado mixed in, but no albacore. By 2:00 pm on day one, I had 9 yellow fin and 1 dorado in the box and my buddy from Orange Co. had the same. The YFT were in the 25-40 lb range. The remainder of day one and all of day two was an occasional jig strike followed by one or two fish per stop - a few albacore but mostly skip jacks. We never found the albacore in any big numbers. We were orginally scheduled for a 3-day on the Top Gun 80, but it was cancelled due to minimal number of passengers. They re-booked us on the 2-day on Sea Aventure, which turned out to be more than enough time after the first two stops.

Dingus, it`s a long way from pirates to the coke plant. If you are going to fish the coke plant, fish PT Sal for rockfish. Anywhere between Mussel and PT Sal 120ft or less is good. Just turn on your meter and look around, plenty of fish.

Deke on the Mello Boy just called and they just made a load of large Anchovies with a light mix of Sardines in it. Plenty for the weekend and the weather looks very good.

Wes, I look at the forcact for the outer waters. There is quite a bit of difference in the weather between the east and west channel. 7-9 ft swell should not be a problem if the wind swell is not up. I prefer wind swell at 2 ft. or less and at least a 10 sec. interval between the swells. When the wind picks up the channel between Rosa and Cruz has a spot near the west end of Cruz called the potato patch. Between the wind, swells, currents and back wash off of Cruz it can get a little hairy so if you expect wind in the afternoon head back a little early. At least the run back from rosa is downhill.If the west channel is to windy you can always head to Channel Islands harbor in Oxnard and head to the back side of Santa Cruz. Yes you can anchor in Beachers. There is a pier near the east side of the Bay and you can anchor in tight to the beach there just be carfull in the kelp. When the wind blows at night it normally comes over the top of the bluff on the beach so it helps to be in tight. Be aware that you are in a closure area at the pier so if you have any fish on board you may want to move to west in the bay until you are out of the closure. I am off Santa Barbara today to test out a new raw water impeller befor I tow to SD sunday. I may fish for halibut, if I hear anything on the island action I'll post later.

Thanks John, the info is helpful. Can you set anchor overnight at Beachers? Also, if you don't mind one more...should we be paying most of our attention to the forecast for "EAST SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL FROM PT. CONCEPTION TO PT. MUGU INCLUDING
SANTA CRUZ AND ANACAPA ISLANDS"

Vs. the outer water forecasts? Sunday reports on the outside are calling for 7' to 9' swell. I'd rather watch opening week football than deal with 9 foot rollers.

Wes, Haven't heard of any seabass news recently. We caught seabass on the backside of Rosa (Eagles nest) earlier in the year. If you meter any squid we have had good luck jigging daytime squid. Rosa can have some exceptional halibut fishing around Beachers. Make sure you know the fishing closure areas at the islands there are several on each of the islands. If you stay overnight at Rosa be prepared because the wind can really blow at night up that way. Lots of different options at the islands. Got to love it. Weather looks good hope you have a safe trip. Looks like I will head to SD on sunday to try for the tuna down that way

Fished the Diablo area today in the skiff for limits of ground fish and legal lings. 18 & 20 #'ers.
It was a 'red' tide this morning @ 5:30. The floressance showed the bait fish running every which-way and the boat looked like it had a green light attached to the bottom. (Could be the reason the bite is off ?)

Thinking about making the trip Sunday afternoon to Santa Cruz/Santa Rosa and stay on anchor 2 nights. We've been with Captain Dave but it will be our first solo on the Troller (26' Stiper).

Hoping for Sea Bass but it sounds like it has been slow and the moon is not perfect for those dates.

Tips?

Thanks for #,s Harrell. I will be on 68. And yes Marti, I always use a gaff on big fish. Don't like replacing nets. A few years back a buddy was using a coffee grinder for halibut and had a good twenty #er on, my other buddy netted it and it broke through a salmon net and took off. The drag was set right but the guy with the fish on had long red hair that got caught in the reel and made it sieze and snapped off the fish. It was bad we lost the fish but it was funny watching him try to get his hair untangled from the reel. We got six that day so not all was lost. It has been kind of a slow year for flatties up in MB so we are going to try the southern spot. I will report back.

Guys going for Halibut. You will increase your chances of hooking a fish by using a trap rig on those big sardines and choves. Also when a fish is obviously over 24" use a gaff. I have heard a few guys say that the lost a huge one at the boat when they were trying to net it.
Just a thought good luck this weekend

Chip;
35:02.65 and 120:38.9 should put you in about 50 ft of water off the coke plant. I'll give you a call on ch 68 sat to see how you are doing.

Gary;
The Pt. Arguello buoy has never been a good indicator of albacore water. It sees the warm water coming around the corner at Pt. Conception which historically does not have albacore in it.

pt arguello bouy is showing warm water 60 to 63 and the last cloro showed somewhat clear water in that area, or is the fog affecting the cloro shot?

The Morro Bay bait guy's phone is 748-0423. Chovy/dine mix right now. Doug runs the dock and takes care of the boat. He'll take before/after hours appointments. You can also call the landing at 772-1222 during the day if he's not available. Now here's a bunch of bull - since I couldn't upload it when we got back. It's almost that time again

Take about a 125 heading until you get to the water depth that you want to troll in then just troll south and you will go by the coke plant area. If you are going to drift with live bait and want to start exactly at the coke plant let me know and I will fire up my GPS plotter and give you exact range and bearing from Avila.

Fished Saturday for Halibut..got great bait from the Billy Boy and tipped him..We fished just north of the rock and up to Toro Creek..Got bit off several times???? Then my girlfriend Carla landed a small shark..It was her first shark ever and that was exciting for her...I caught a larger one and will post a photo. What kind of shark is this? Good to eat? We got bit off maybe 6 times..

Would anyone be kind enough to tell me the four corners of the no fishing zones along our central coast. I can not seem to find them and would like to enter the corners into my new GPS unit.

Thank You

PS....who ever bought my old boat....I would love to get my hands on that GPS for about an hour...I forgot to write down some of my hot spots....

Update on previous rpt. Tonight's SST is not nearly as impressive as yesterdays for the water from A-Cyn out to the Rod. May have been a false reading. Just want to things accurate and straight.
