Subject: Fishing Loreto 7/13/02 to 7/18/02

Roy Ituralde & Paul (Tambo) Shank,

Just got back from Loreto and what a great trip. Have been fishing there for the last 13 years. There is a new hotel in town I highly recommend(Hacienda Suites) next to El Nido Restaraunt. We usaully stay right on the beach at La Pinta (no vacancy) but what a great staff and accomadations at the Hacienda Suites. We paid $65 a night for the first 4 days got the 5th night free. Pool,Bar,Restaraunt,2 Queen size beds,Tv,Brand new Air w/remote control, ice availabe,10 min. walk to the murcado.

Wide open Dorado bite 15lbs-40lbs straight off of Punta Lobo. Wide open Squid 5lbs-25lbs.

Fished 14-17th and left on the Thurs. 18th.
All 4 days limits (3ea.)and alot of catch and release. Between the two of us we released more than the limits each day. Caught fish on mackeral, squid strips and sardinas. Hardly any sargasso. We kept working our way east of Punta Lobo trolling live bait or squid strips until we caught a fish. Then we chunked squid for a chum line when we got a hook up. What a great way to get the fish boiling. Once you find the currents or a thermal break...Wide Open Bite.

Started experimenting with two new lures. Worm King 7" plastic tail lead head (caught a couple of fish)
Brand new trolling lures we bought at the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach. We only had two but we could not stop the fish from hitting these. I think the name of these are Catchy Lures w/ a spin propeller head. Zuchinni color worked really well but the purple/black was outstanding. We have used these on albacore and they outfish any feather.

Ok...enough already!!! Had to much fun.
Albies are starting to show I will have to make a run for them next. If your out on the water we have a boat named the Wharf Rat give us a call.

FISH REPORT

Ø WEATHER: The most part of the last week the weather was not very good, a couple of cold fronts changed the good weather that we had been last weeks before. But this last Saturday calm and sun came back, now we have 85º F shadow and the water is 68ºf approx.

Ø YELLOWTAIL: The next ones are the best places to catch them: Pulpito, in this place they are eating on surface to many of them, they are biting with mac or big eye. The regular size is between 18 to 20 lbs and the bigger are between 30 to 35 lbs. some boats came back with 10 pieces. Catalana: Punta Norte and Bajo Seco south of Catalana, there are in a good size 30 to 35 lbs. Punta Lobos (Carmen Island): Some of them bite trolling with live bait occasionally, with size around 30 to 35 lbs. Punta Perico or El Perro at Carmen Island. Yesterday yellowtails start to bite much better in these places on the surface with live bait. The best sizes was 30 to 35 lbs. and the best caught was 8 pieces.

Ø CABRILLA: Same yellowtail areas.

Ø ABER-JACK: Catalana Island.

Ø GROUPER BROOM TAIL: Punta Pulpito.

Ø BAIT: It is available for $1.00 usd each or to catch in Coronado Island between 6:30 to 7:00 am

A comment: Yesterday a client of mine was send to me a report wrote by Pam Bollee and this is about commercial fishing in Loreto Marine Park. This park will have more force when all the changes with our new government will be done, as you know the changes take some times, paper works personal changes etc. but every thing will be better when all this changes will official.

Maybe the two boats that Pam has in her fleet doesn’t want to send to fishing more far than the Carmen Island. That’s why I think that she complaint for the bad yellowtail season. If she wants to have success in her fishing, she need’s to send her two boats to fishing more far.
