Cubano Several of us are likely to give it another try. locating longfins up here is not always easy. We have already put a couple of hundred miles under the hull since july for no fish near here. Some years we barely see them within 100 miles and others we have schools at 15 miles. the nearshore 15-25 mile water looked decent but gave up no fish 2 weeks ago. we had excellent life and temperature, just no tuna. nearby water was better than 50 mile water then. Head out, put a line out and if you get a fish on the boat broadcast it on the vhf, then if nearshore give one of the guys a cel call and have them post it here. the next day the launches(psl and morro ) will have boats out if weather decent. My Tuna observation since the eary 70s are 1)Early tuna tend to be smaller(17-25#+) but in larger schools and will bite almost anything. Later tuna are the big ones(more 35-70+#) and are more likely to take bait than trolled lures. I prefer a couple of big ones to a boatload of "schoolies" but this year WE will take a "peanut or football tuna" just to taste sashimi again. hope to be out there sometime sunday or soonafter. We jsut keep trying, some years through thanksgiving or even later. |

I too have high hopes for LFT! So, what now? Latest albie report is NADA....Any chance of mustering up a lil enthusiasm and get a small flotilla of boats together to get coverage and find the fish this weekend (specifically Sunday for me)? Weather/conditions look great and by all accounts they should be lurking somewhere out there... I would be ready to run- Feedback? |

Fished on Michele's new boat the Rita G today. It is a very comfortable and fishable Party boat, much like the Fiesta.Plenty of rail space all the way up the sides and a nice open bow for casting. She still needs a bait tank and a little work on the bunkroom, but the boat has a lot of potential with Michele at the helm.Hopefully the new Central Coast Sportfishing operation will bring mored anglers to Morro bay to the benefit of BOTH sportfishing operations on the Embarcadero....jeff |

Albacore report. none caught We went off shore yesterday 35:17, 121:20 foggy, small scattered schools of what looked like sauries. no birds working. did cast on kelp pattie for a blue perch don't know what that was. boxed that area most of day seemes to hve most of the sealife around there. had one breaking school of bait within 50 feet of boat it was a fish but can't confirm that it was tuna. on way in picked up call from Hi Flyer (black cod boat) breaking fish around 15 miles from Morro, fished this area for nada, but lots of bait whales, sealife. stopped at church for some dinner. fery foyyg on way back. a bucket of sardiens left on board the boat lastnight brougnt scatterd fish around the neighborhood this morning (raccons) next time there was one commercial boat working that 15 mile area. it looked good. gene on the full moon |

Well, I thought if I left town the albacore would certainly arrive, close and in big numbers! Sounds like that didn't happen. Maybe soon. Spent a week in San Carlos, Mexico catching Dorado and a few wahoo. Great trip with lots of fun and catching ! Will be watching the SST/chlorophyll/ weather with high hopes that we may still get a shot at some LFT. |

Fished for halibut at the coke plant today from 8;30 till 1;30. Covered an area 3 miles long and tried 60 ft. to 100ft.One scratched bait no other hits. Perfect weather but visibility was bad due to fog. Deke has small sardines. Also the seals swamped a boat on a mooring at psl. |

JIM The nearshore weather looks nice. those big rockfish and lings are all yours. land effect pretty good at delaying the whitecaps a few hours beyond offshore chop point. you will likely do fine anywhere nearshore, maybe all day. I need to check updated coamps and tempbreak maps tonight. good luck and post a report either way. |

B A Stewart: I bird dogged the albacore about 15 times last year for no fish...hate to say it but getting a day off work is hard enough so I just like going up past Ragged for big rock cod. I just wonder how the wind will be past san simeon on Thursday....I will probably stay in 100' water or less |

Jim G. take a look at "coamps" free wind forecast, also If it turns out accurate, Wednesday looks like the day, then Sunday or Monday next low wind days. Thur ,Friday and Sat look better for rockfish or halibut. but If you are going on one of the other wind days, a west to nortwest course may make travel more enjoyable in afternoon, We were planning Thursday but now leaning more toward Sun or Mon. good luck catching and find and share some numbers on a school of longfins! |

Fished N. of Cayucos area for this 44# flattie (45") on Sunday. Depth 70', water temp 60.8 and fishing live bait (thanks, Doug). Weather and drift conditions were exceptional and excellent. Wind started up around 10am and we finally hung it up by 11am being blown off the water, however, on our run back to the barn,...feel'n the LUV!

Fished with Cloud on the Joy Lyn on saturday, fished just south of the pea patch for RF on light tackle- 6 to 8lb lt. Rays buddy, first time out on Rays boat on the big water, caught most of the catch of RF and one huge Cabezon all on the light tackle. Got blown off the water at 10 am and went inside for one flattie right off the cal poly pier- same angler- he had the hot rod, and could not have happen to a nicer guy. Steve hope you get the mini avocation up, and we can get at least another flattie trip in. The wind was nasty though, hope that it dies down. |

Paul, I've caught some nice halibut in late October and november in 100+ feet of water anywhere from San Simeon to the shell mounds. They come on rockcod gear out there (we aren't fishing halibut that deep) and they seem to be spread out across the reefs and bite anything on a fast drift, especially an uphill drift in south wind. I can't tell you the scientific reason...that's just how, when and where. www.centralcoastsportfishing.com 1/2 price tomorrow |

Steve, Sorry to mislead you or anyone else... two 'buts to 30# means one 30# (42") and one 14# (not measured, not sure why). A good fish, that 14#, but not as good as the 30. It was a bit of mayhem, because when the big one came up, it was pretty sedate and came up straight towards us, so we had the net and gaff ready, but the net was 1st... that is until she turned, then it was oh $#*+!!!! The GAFF!! On another note, I will be looking for tuna on Weds, starting in the water due west of us 15 or so miles. Anyone else want to join in the fun? Wx looks favorable. |

Tom Holahan, it is good to hear from you again. My brother Linc, my friend Larry, and I went out of Morro Bay this weekend. Linc caught a 29# halibut Friday by the AB farm and a 20#er on Saturday. I caught a short 'but Saturday. We caught and released several lingcod. We had 5 keeper lings in two days. We used live bait for the first time. Thanks to Tim Foley for the tips on using live bait and a trap rig. That was the most lingcod we have ever caught. We saw some white fish jumping out of the water while feeding on a bait ball. Anyone know what they might be. We thought they might be sea bass, but are not sure. |

Fished on my rig Sept 17th and 18th near the 181 and 289 close to San Clemente Island for 21 yellowfin for two guys. Fish 25 to 40-lbs. Left from Dana Pt Hbr with good dines that paid off. We fished for 1.5-days and drove away from biting fish, many caught on slow trolled fish traps. Our best bait stop was for 4 fish working the dolphins. BTW: We got chewed off twice fishing 20-lb mono on same stop so thinking wahoo as some were caught in the same area from a rpt I received. Water 70.5-degrees and clean blue. Hope the tuna show up this way soon. |

Nice work Paul...one of the best scores I've heard up there in several days. I've had a few friends get skunked or only get 1 small (10#) fish. Two 30#'s is sweet!!! I read a paper about spawning of California halibut and the jist of the paper was that they spawn throughout the summer and early fall. They come in to the shallow water to spawn because the water is warmer...maybe why the fish came in later this year with all the cold water we've had? Anyhow, they don't have a set month that they spawn...most between June and October. Hope that helps. My boat is still in the shop...so I'm jonesing on the beach best fishes, steve |

John, we went out 46 NM, 230degre PSL 10 days ago all the life we saw(no Albacore) was 16-24 miles very warm and fairly clear but not very "blue", bait jumping out of the frenzys sometimes but we couldnt confirm any of the pursuers. whales, dolphin, porpise, birds sharks, sunfish(mola) but no gamefish seen or hooked. the outer water up to the donut was devoid of discernable activity compared to the closer area. Oneida b had caught an alby and a couple of bonita down there, but we couldnt raise any.We may try again after wind comes down later in week if my crew and I can get away. Someone Has to keep up the prospecting. my meter doesent identify fish and is not that great so if you have a better sounder with a cokor readout and more power you may be able to find more than our zero. one problem out of psl during the week is launch hours are about 7-4 so you may want to get in water afternoon before. if we can locate some fish they might just open 5-5 or better for us if its worth their while. the port seems starving this year and we need to support it and the bait boat too. good luck. hope one of us posts a longin catch soon. note to el Jeffe, Flipper can sleep in the cabin if you want to give up your bunk! |

Fished above the ab farm area Saturday for 2 nice 'buts to 30#. The big one broke some plumbing in my fish hold. She wasn't very happy, but she will get over it. Seems like the bite is slowing down a bit? Anyone know when these fish actually spawn? |

Fished off Pt Estero to the ab farm and Constantine Rock. Returned 8 lings and kept one. No halibut for us but heard two other boats got a couple. Weather was great in the morning, no swells no wind but by midday the drift was too fast. Picked up some bait from Virg's that was OK and made some bait while drifting. Great day but no big bite. |

There have been some really nice reds this year probably several records but no one bothers to weigh them officially. They're as big as I have ever seen but nothing I would call close to 20. Reds look alot bigger than they really are because the blow up so much when they come up. |

Played hooky from work this morning and fished the north end of the Estero with 2 friends...we got a good mix of medium and small sardines from Virgs, and spent the morning drifting for halibut. We had a few raked baits but did not boat any flatties in the four areas we fished....The good part is that we caught 4 really nice lings and a dozen #4-7lb rockfish consisting of Olives, reds, bolina, and a couple huge johnny bass.We also had an approx. #30lb king salmon follow a bait right to the port corner of the stern as we were picking up the lines to make a move...The weather was gorgeous, with just enough breeze to drift and almost zero swell...I'll be back out Saturday morning for sure....jeff |

Chip, It all looks great, but the problem with this year has been, when the water is the correct tempeture, the color is wrong and when the color is correct the wind blows and ruff seas. When the weather is good the water is perfect, then it is 120 miles out or the cloud cover is to bad to see if anything is good.Example this week, would possable hold fish in closer water, but the wind is blowing for a week. I have fished Tuna for many years and can not remember two many years that Morro and Monterey have been this bad based on water and wind. Don't give up hope yet. I have caught Tuna after Thanksgiving before. The water will cool off down South first and it may drive the Tuna to us. They have had a great run and it is not over yet down there. If all the things line up, I will let you know when we find them!!! Mike |

Has anyone looked at the tempbreak page for 8-16-08 for both the temp and chloro shots? Even though the chloro and temp are a little broken, it looks like a good break inside that is tied all the way past the donut with 61-62ish water. Talked to a friend that caught a bonita in 70 feet of water off of Spooners Cove on Saturday. There must be tuna somewhere along that break. Next decent window I'm going searching. |

Was nice to come back to some good hali reports, been in IDAHO catching HEADS with my brother , we made about $200.00 in four trips on the big lake, 15.00 per MACK OR BOWS . While I was there I went to a DFG meeting on the future of the CHINOOK in Lake CDL , sounds like they all go to the same school , there going to KILL all the salmon in the lake to save the KOKANEE fisheries, don,t know what the hell there thinking, anyway had a good time with my BRO and caught fish , but am glad to be back to the big salty lake we all love .See ya on the water Blackie |

We had the 4 halibut on the Harbor Pathfinder just above the nothmost building off Caycos. 67 to 70 feet of water. Some nice lingcod and bolina (brown rockfish) in there too. We did try China cove and the ab farm area for nothing. It may have been the time of day for the better bite, but also we didn't give it a lot of time because we needed the limits of rockfish too. All fish were on sardines from Virg's with trap hooks. Thanks to all of you who have been posting your halibut info. sharon |

I am looking for a little rowboat to use as a light boat. It doesn't have to be anything more than a dingy to float a generator and some lights at night. The idea is to anchor it in the evening then come back and wrap it and the bait under in the morning before dawn. So long as it stays afloat. A trick the oldtimers used. Maybe we trade some bait for it. |

Britt, Might wanna grab some 2/0's, too. The 'chovies were working well and it's important to match your hook to your bait size. |

One 28" halibut and one legal ling (two shorts) at the AB parking lot on Saturday. Bite was really slow for us till about 3pm. Chovies seemed to out perform the dines? A few big fish on the radio. |

man talk about some beginners luck!! We took the Striper out for it's first day of fishing from Morro and headed up to the ab farm like everyone else after getting a scoop.... then decided to look for a spot a little deeper so we wouldn't step on anyone's toes cause it was crowded and hooked up on a soupfin shark on the first drop. Nice little 15-20 minute fight on 20lb line and released her. Then spent some time drifting and got bit off from something big on a 40lb leader. It bent the rod and peeled of some line but that was about it. Then picked up a nice 17 lb 30inch halibut for our first ever!... got lucky after that and drifted over some rocks for 2 lings, one keeper and some rock fish too (all released). What an awesome day. thanks to everyone for their help and can't wait to give a LFT report soon!! |

Britt, Depending on size of bait, I've done well with 3/0, 4/0, 5/0 octopus hooks with the 3/0 and maybe 4/0 being more often used. I've also had good success using the simple Eagle Claw 118L Live Bait hook sized to match the bait. Both types would be set up as Trap Rigs. |

What type of hook and leader do you use for halibut? I have only used huge circle hooks in Alaska for halibut. Would a 6/0 octopus hook work with live bait, or should I use something else? We are going to give it a try this coming weekend. Thanks for any advise. |

Someone left some washdown items at the boat wash station this evening. Being one of the last boats leaving the parking lot, I grabbed them so they wouldn't be gone for good. If the owner will post contact info, I'll be happy to get them returned. |

Went to work the Halibut today but chose to avoid the potential parking lot at Estero. Fished PSL for 7 'Buts, 3 solid legals boated, 4 right on the cusp that were released. Harry B. was our 'but-man today landing 2 of the legals and 3 of the shorts. Incidentals were a nice big ling, a HUGE red, a few big Blues, and a few Bolina. Water conditions were great and we had to create our own drift for most of the day. Deke set us up with a nice mix of very lively Dino's and sizeable 'chovies. Back on the trailer by 12:15 p.m. |
