I take it lobster season is open. Do lobsters hang out at Port San Luis. I would like to try it but don't want to go all of the way down to Ventura. |

Ray, as a note you can also hoop the Ventura Harbor. Some guys are doing well. There are some other spots both down the coast that are popular and at the islands if you want to do an over nite. Alan |

Went to take a shot at Albacore on 10/2/08. had to go it alone, every one had to work.Went out about 30 miles, a little past the Monterey weather bouy.Got my first double and had to let one run while I attempted to bring in all of the other lines and gaff the first fish.Second one came unbutton. Third fish came later in the day and had to try to reel in the fish and clear lines and lost the other one close to the boat. So, i eneded up with one 12 lB. Nice day on the water, but not the volume of fish i was hoping for.But still better than being at work. Looks like they are there, but no one set the world on fire. The highest count was six fish that I heard, but he only had three strikes, they are where small fish. Some other guys did get some larger fish, mostly one here and there, no real big bites. So hope is still there for a late bite. The small ones are the first to move out of the area, when the big ones come in. So we will wait and see. Mike |

Wow, it looks like the President got something right. It will be interesting to see how the PFMC manages a sustainable recreational fishery in the federal waters. This may mean that we can fish in deeper than 240 feet after the state season closes. Stay tuned. Bob Hather |

Water below the donut is looking better all the time but Bayside up in Santa Cruz is reporting albacore caught today within 30 miles. Good plume with warmer, clean water moving in closer up there. Weather looks best tomorrow or Friday. We may make a run up to Moss on Saturday if the weather improves. Bert 247 Albemarle |

Mike Moore and others, I will be making a three day trip to Santa Cruz Is. on Thurs. Might make a run out to the plume of warm water for exotics if the weather cooperates. Right now it looks like we will have to stay closer to the islands if the wind blows like predicted. I'll post later if we get the chance to look at the water offshore. Thanks to all of the others who have put in the miles looking for our local tuna and posted their results. John 26 skipjack "Island Girl" |

Fished on the Wakefish Tues. Weather was very nice until 11 O'clock then the North winds blew hard. We had a nice batch of reds, and lost one keeper ling at the boat. I am looking to go out next Tues weather permitting. |

Tim, The MPA's were not mandated by the feds, but by state law pass in 1999 (Marine Life Preservation Act). This law stated the a series of marine reserves would be created along the coastline of the state of Ca. There is no federal law mandating MPA's. Currently Oregon is where we were 10 years ago. No law passed yet, but they are attempting to draft something. |

Steve, Regarding the MPA Executive Order issue, I'm not sure how this plays out but I thought the MPA's were "mandated" by the Feds which required the individual State to comply and implement the MPA program. I still wouldn't get my hopes up, after all, it's pretty hard to get something back once the Government takes it away. I guess we can only hope that this addendum would have some positive effect for us recreational fishermen. |

went out today to give it a shot for the albies. Went out about 20 miles, a little bit rough but do-able. 60 degree water, that wasn't the nice blue but didn't look to bad. no signs, no fish, trolled for awhile then shot in and fished bottom for a couple hours before calling it a day. Got a few nice reds and a nice ling and a few other assorted. Kevin (KATMANDU) |

Our MPA's our mandated by the state and are in state waters (0-3 miles). Federal waters extend from 3-200 miles off our coast. So this will change nothing for us here...but maybe the Channel Islands? Not sure how it works with Islands...plus that is a N.P. |

Paul if you look at TempBreak http://tempbreak.com/index.php?&cwregion=cc that site shows both the 601 and the guide on it. If you click on Monterey and move the cursor to those spots it will show NM. 601=47NW and guide=71NM. Going out of Santa Cruz is about 6 miles closer. Hopes this helps. Bert |

Are you sure you want to head 20+ miles offshore? From John: WINDS: Moderate to fresh (13-24 mph) northwesterly winds will develop during afternoon hours, decreasing during the night and morning hours. Little change in this pattern is expected through Thursday. Light and variable winds are forecast on Friday, increasing out of the south on Saturday. Increasing northwesterly winds should develop along our coastline on Sunday and Monday. |

Late report, but we went out looking yesterday too. Left MB at 6:00am on a 260 heading and went out about 25 miles. Water temp varied from 59 to a high of 61.2. Water was starting to clean up and was somewhat blueish but no real temp break. Put the rods in at 35.23/121.20 and trolled NW towards Cape San Martin Buoy. Trolled for about 2 hrs for nada. Saw some porpise but not much other life. Didn't hear of anything of promise on the radio so we pulled the rods in at 9:30am and headed to Ragged Pt. for 5 keeper lings and limits of reds/assorted rock fish for three. Water was nice. Oh yea, got a real generous 1/2 scoop of bait from Doug (Billie Boy)- thanks for being there for us. Bert - 247 Albemarle |

Jim. Thanks very much for the big effort and follow-up report. Wish you had been rewarded with a boat load of albacore but it seems like were in some kind of funk/peristent down cycle during recent years. Way overdue for a change up this way. JFYI, I have been getting fresh reports of scattered catches of yellowfin, marlin, skipjack, bones, and small albies about 40-miles from Chn Isle Hbr. Water 67 to0 69-degree and clean as of tonight but some real wind could change things quick. With the right weather, SST, and timing, I may make the run. Maybe spend the night at SBI too. It would be great to have you in the hunt. |

went out looking, started trolling at 30/20 and trolled to 40/30 then out to 40/40 where I got a triple on bonita, and it was clean clear kinda blue water at 62.5 deg. Got another triple of large bonita and that was it for the day. Saw most the life on the inside, in the dirty water, wish I could say it looked really good, but it didn't. Not to say there isn't albi's out there, but it is that time of year when they don't really want jigs, and that makes it hard to find them. Big ocean with only 1 boat looking. Maybe the water down below is a better last shot ? |

Mike, we agree much more than we disagree, I just didnt want to disuade the adventurous, with the year they had down south, I'm having a hard time not wishing a few somethings show up here. I was going to go out today but cancelled last night.I have seen yellowfin(a couple of 35-40#ers) here when no albacore were present, I have seen giant schools of 9-10#+ class bonita/o and even caught stray bluefin when the water was not giving up albacore(not even counting el nino years). Likely you have too. I feel we need boat presence here more than ever because of the much smaller "small commercial" fleet . We used to have boats doing the prospecting for us more than us doing the first locating. Im glad your big Yamaha is back in action without a big bill. thats the kind of things that get to us gasoline powered boaters. the diesel guys can seemingly run all year with clean fuel, a good water pump and 2 gallon of motor oil (it seems). sounds like there are still flatties and rockfish to be had, so we might try that instead if no lonfins pop up soon. Glad to hear your back in the hunt too if they show up. |

Albacore, albacore... it sounds like everyone will agree that they are out there but mother nature just wont put a bullseye on them like years before.... so with that in mind, we jumped in the striper early sunday and took off about 15 miles out of psl and circled the two buoys west of psl with no luck and no water warmer than 59.2 by 11am. we were hoping to just find a warm spot with bait by chance but missed it. whales dolphins and seals everywhere though so i think we might've been close. if it hadn't been our first real offshore run in this boat and had a buddy or even better, a "floatilla", maybe we woulda gone all the way to the donut. water wasnt bad at all and cleaned up pretty nice 10 miles out. sooooo ....what now?? |

Barry, The boat is fine, just a small problem, salt water! The power cable to the engine had corrosion on it at the engine side.Well greased and anti corrosion stuff on it and as good as new.The only problem was that you had to drop the left side of the engine cover to get to it, something that you could not get to and do on the water. Now for the cold water and Albacore thing. I too have caught Albacore in cooler and green water in a normal year when there have been big schools of Tuna found. I read an article years ago about Albacore on the central coast. They believ that there is a large number of bigger tuna that do not migrate and are permantly here. They say, that the larger fish are more tolarent of cooler and greener waters. This make sence based on what every one has said and caught late in the year. The problem this year is that we have not had the normal temperature breaks for both color and clarity that we normally see. Most of the time you have a mass of the same temperature or color out there. That makes finding those big guys really hard. The two fish that we have caught this year of Morro Bay, we caught them both in light blue to light green water. They both where 20lbs fish. Here is the problem, no clear breaks for tempeture with water clarity break in the same place,so where do you drop the lines.I guessed corectly twice, but in both cases I believe it was more luck than any thing. That was also earlier in the year when they have a greater desire to hit trolled lures. Now later in the year they prefer bait, now try to decide where to start chunkin bait and drift for them. That is a huge ocean to try and find a fish without defined tempeture breaks with defind water clarity lines together.I hope as the wtares cool of down south that maybe it will push that group of fish north. Down south has had one of their greatest year of fishing in a long time.So maybe the fish just had no need to move this far north, there has been a ton of bait for them to feed on down there and the watre tempatures and color have just hung around all summer. I have not given up on looking for them, but I will need to see a little better water conditions to search for them. But hey, prove me wrong, post some numbers of caught fish. Mike Mike |

Fished the ab farm parking lot on Sunday for nothing for about 2 hours. Had to cut the day short so I moved about 3.5 miles south in 70 ft of water for one last drift and my 16yr old daughter caught a 21 lb flattie. Lots of fun for her and me. While at the cleaning station I saw a guy filleting two albacore. Amazed, I questioned where he got them. He bought them at the ramp from some guy selling them whole from Oregon. Don't know the story but this would explain the carcass Gene saw. Also got a very generous 1/2 scoop from Billy Boy. I also appreciate his efforts and would hate to lose his services. If you feel short changed tell him or ask him for a bit more. He is a friendly guy and knows what a 1/2 or full scoop is supposed to be. Thanks Doug we are one family that appreciates your efforts and hopes you are successful! |

Greetings, Fished PSL in the skiff today. Got a HEALTHY scoop from Deke of big chovies with a few dines thrown in. Headed out to the Pea Patch with my recently "fixed" motor only to have it konk out on me again!!! Same problem as before...we'll see on Monday if they make it right. Nothing like spending $550 on a motor to have them fix nothing at all!!! Anyhow, we dinked around inside for 1 short, 1 nice sandsole, 1 black, 2 brown's, and 1 gopher. Nice day on the water...wishing I could have fished the big water though later, steve |

Went out yesterday and caught a 17lb. bonito about a mile off San Simeon. The water was around 60 degrees and a pretty blue. I was reeling up a swim bait and got hit near the surface. Of course it was on the lightest gear I had and it took about 30 min. just to see what it was. My friend gaffed it for me and since this is the only tuna I've got this year it sure was exciting. Tried boxing the area trolling with swim baits but no go. I guess it just goes to show that you never know while you're on the ocean. It was outstanding table fare, marinated and barbecued for lunch today. Also had a nice limit of rock cod and saw a hugh sunfish coming into the rock. It was hundreds of pounds and about 8 ft. long. Sure hate to hit something like that. |

Bait? What bait, lol? I too tip my hat, and wallet to the bait guys up in Avila and Morro Bay. Hard job especially in bad times. And, as Tim just stated, we too have found that you don't need clean blue water to catch albies along the Central Coast, especially during the fall and early winter months. Seems those early summer migratories run much smaller and prefer the cleaner water but we've caught big fat pigs (some over 70-lbs) well inshore. They are known to munch on baby boccachios inshore on the drop-ledges and drop-offs. Skipper Dennis onboard the Princess from Virgs pointed this out many moons ago. Move around alot, fish the marks, chunk cut dines, work jigs deep, and show patience. |

as far as bait goes its the economy ,look at the size of a big mac now ,its barly bigger than a sausage mcmuffin ,its the same everywhere ,they hafta make ends meet too with the price of fuel ,crews ,repairs and so on, and if anyone out thereis planning on going out on a party boat give the RITA G a try ,you wont go away disappointed ,nice boat and a great crew |

Man you guys sure complain about Virges bait. Seen it here a few times. Then you complain when they dont have bait. Get over it, you should be happy they even have bait. I for one am grateful that they have bait and for their efforts. If tuna show then I will glady pay to play! Hey Mike- You dont need to blue clean water to catch tuna. Caught them plenty of times in green even brown colored water. |

Fished Morro Bay up up China Harbor on Sat for incidential rf, one legal ling and a 28 lb flattie on the second to last drift of the day. Thanks Steve for the late move to the other area. Bait is expensive but a throw net pays for itself in two trips. We loaded up with probably two scoops in ten minutes or less. If you notice, Darby doesn't load his boats up with live bait so the only way he makes $ on the billyboy is to sell it to us. I have felt short changed and spoke about it here, however, Darby probably loses $ or comes close to it trying to supply us with bait. A good tuna run would be great for everyone involved. |

Cracka, With Deke at PSL a $15 scoop ($20 with tip) would be enough bait to fish until 1 or 2 pm...with some usually left over (I'm guessing 40 or 50 baits). I felt a little short-changed when I got bait a few weeks back out of MB too. With all that bait in the bay...not sure why they are being stingy with it? I would suggest making bait next time. Did that in about 20-30 minutes in MB a few weeks back. lat, steve PS I'll be fishing PSL the next two days for halibut. Give a shout on 68 "mini-avocation" |

I bought live bait from Virges today. Before I feel that I got raped, can anyone tell me how much bait with tip included a $20.00 dollar bill should be? |

MIKE DID YOU GET ENGINE ISSUE DIAGNOSED? HOPE IT WAS MINOR. WE ARE CONSIDERING ROCKFISH EARLY IN WEEK IF NO GOOD WATER SHOWS. 2 WEEKS AGO WHEN I PRIVATE MESSAGED TO YOU I MENTIONED THERE WAS CLEAR WATER IN THAT NEARSHORE TEMP BREAK@15M OUT TIL ABOUT 24NM. NOT SUPER TIDYBOWL BLUE BUT CLEAN AND CLEARBLUE.IT WAS FULL OF LIFE. WE HAVE CAUGHT PLENTY OF THE BIG TUNA, (LATE SEASON) IN GREEN WATER BUT I AGREE IT LESS LIKELY TO FIND THE EARLY -MID SCHOOLS THERE . BUT EVEN A 1-2 KNOT CURRENT CAN MOVE THAT BLUE WATER A LONG WAY IN 48-72 HOURS IF IT MOVES UP OR DOWN THE COAST INSTEAD OF PINNING IT IN AND UPWELLING INTO IT. THE CHLORO AND THE SST CAN CHANGE SO FAST BUT OUR DATA ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE 12 HOURS OR MORE OLD. iF ANYONE HAS THE RANGE THE WATER NW OF MORRO LOOKED INTERESTING A COUPLE OF TIMES LAST WEEK BUT MUCH FURTHER OUT THAN 15 MILES. IF THE DECENT WEATHER HOLDS AND WE GET IN THE WATER EARLY ENOUGH WE MIGHT CONSIDER A 70-100 MILE RUN NW. I JUST DONT LIKE TO GO MORE THAN ABOUT 50 SW BECAUSE WE HAVE TO GO SLOWER HOME AND THAT CUTS INTO TROLL TIME. SOMETIMES WE JUST TROLL HOME.NW THE QUESTION IS GETTING OUT THERE FAR ENOUGH BEFORE THE WIND. HOPE YOU HAVE THE BOAT SORTED OUT. I AM TRING TO STAY ON FAST ALERT FOR A TUNA OPPORTUNITY, TANK IS FULL AND CREW IS RESTLESS. JEFF IF YOU READ THIS POST LET ME KNOW. OVER |

Monte, Not to rain on your parade, but it is a waste of time going out there right now. The water is warm, but it is a green as green can be. Tuna do not live in that color of water. The blue water is 125 miles plus out there and unless it comes closer, than we are not going to have any Tuna this year other than the two I have caught and I ate them a long time ago.Go target bottom fish and halibut and save your gas. Were gonna launch psl bright and early. If theres nothing there at least we'll be close enough to come back for some halibuts |

Left Weds morning from MB, set some cod gear, then went looking for LFT overnight. Had a spot of puddling fish come up 20 feet from the boat, but no takers on bait or on the troll. Called in whatever boats were nearby, Full Moon and another one can't recall the name... maybe Go Fish? Thoroughly worked the area (18.8/07.8), then headed off to the northwest. Conditions were as good as one could hope for, birds, tons of sauries, seals, dolphins, whales, meter marks, and I mean good meter marks, but NO FISH. We did catch one 25# Humboldt squid while drifting weds night on the sea anchor. Drifted 2.5 miles overnight, and worked south to the upper edge of the Santa Lucia bank, then turned towards home. Got a 10# bonito on a clone right out front about 1 mile. More miles under the keel with no fish. I'm done looking for the year, at least until there are fish on the fillet table at the launch ramp. I've said that before, though..... Good luck to anyone who goes. Email if you need more details. Paul |

Forget the chloro I just posted. Tempbrake and terrafin have now posted a better picture. There are some clean areas W & NW of us. It is clear out there now so we should get another shot today. The weather window is now Sun,Mon and tues. |

The water that Gene looked a few days ago around 25-miles from The Rock is not likely a good indicator of what's out there. That Inside water is off-color and cool per lastest SST and Chloro shots. If I were an ALBACORE I might be milling around 34.20 and 121.10, down toward A-Cyn. That's where the water is off-blue and is running up to 63-degrees. Hope this helps somebody in the hunt. Btw: What a difference a week makes for tuna hunters down south. This is the zone where we nabbed 21 fat yellowfin tuna up to 40# working just last week out of Dana Point Hbr. The biting yellowfin have since moved further south and deeper into Mexican waters. Not much is left in U.S. waters due to recent cooling/winds and the striped skunk is common now. Albacore could still happen along the central coast. |

Michele, where are the south domes? We fished from the AB farm to Cayucos last weekend and it was pretty slow for rockfish too. We only caught one red in two days of fishing. We caught a few blues, browns, and blacks too. |

is this the same mike blackstone that posted on july 27 "i will have to think long and hard before i'll spend the money on a trip out of san diego" 3 days for 40lbs of fillets? i agree though, fact is those trips are a crap shoot. sometimes its great most times it sucks. the best way to save money and not have to clean your boat is to stop by dockside or giovanni's on the way home from work. the best way to find albacore is to wait until you see dead bodies being sold off the back of the commercials down in morro, then get out and look. by the way we fished for halibut on wednesday for a goose egg. primarily drifted around the ab farm and bounced a little bit. lots of bait out there. |

ALBI FISHERMAN I have been watching the H&M reports for the last couple weeks , the albis are GONE from there , I think they must have went way outside of us and santa cruz this year , and so far they have not made eureka, may just be another year for us . We have found its cheaper to run down to SD jump on a three day and fill your freezer and come home , no boat to wash , fish are all cleaned , just got to bag em or can. JUST MY 2 CENTS WORTH Blackie. PS JIMMY fishing was SLOW yesterday to the south also |

Stewart / Schaller, Thanks for the comeback. I will standby and hopefully see a rally for an LFT flotilla launching on Sunday (I am in if this can happen). At this point in the year, let's get some coverage and who knows what will happen! I too have monitored all the LFT reports over the last 3 months or more, and agree with all you have pointed out Stewart. I also appreciate all those who have ventured out in the search..As for today, pulling out now and gonna go drift for some flatties... |
