Been up here in Oregon for a great first week of trout and steelhead fishing...I took my 5 year old twin girls down the McKenzie River with a guide/driftboat last Friday and the kids nailed the trout.I lost count after 40 fish on dry and wet flies in the first 3 hours.I managed a few trout myself, plus a bonus 8lb steelhead on a nymph which was delicious on the BBQ that night....The next day I went 4/4 on big chrome bright summer steelhead + 1 dark chinook fishing the Willamette in a jet sled just outside the Eugene city limits with one of my law school buddies....Talked to Stacy Meecham who was heading out on a "local" 12 hour albie trip on the coast near Bandon...I do not know how he did,but the Oregon party boats along the "cental coast" have been nailing them close in for weeks (which is good because they cannot fish salmon).....Its great to be in a state where almost everyone fishes and even the vegans don`t give you sh*t about it....tight lines....jeff

Finally got out on the LFT hunt after baiting up at 3:30pm....yeah, Tuesday afternoon. A far cry from the planned departure of 3:30am Tuesday morning! You ask, how is that? Well, I will tell ya...Boat was loaded up ready to go, so last thing Monday night (10pm)was to fuel up, and load ice chest with ice....mission complete by 10:30pm...Returned home from the gas station backed the boat/trailer into driveway and parked it....and as I walked towards the house I noticed I had only three wheels instead of four on the tandem axle...imagine that! I know I had 4 wheels attached when I left to fuel up, however, between my house and the gas station, approx. a mile or so, the whole wheel dissappeared under tow. Never felt it, no pulling to one side ...nada to indicate something wrong....ANd when I say disappeared, I mean it...We combed every inch of Los Osos Valley Road between my place near cemetery and the 76 station on 9th St, immediately that night and found nothing, and figured get up early in the morning, it be easier to find, locate it, put new bearings in and be back on track by 9am or so....well over 3 hours later looking for the wheel/tire and found nothing....a buddy volunteered I could use his hub/bearings that matched, off his ski boat, and I used my spare tire to get us by...it did, and we were back on the road by 3pm, and loaded w/bait from Doug at 3:30....Anyway, made the run to 35:20/120.50 arriving after midnite. Wind gust were 20-25 w/swell 6-8' with 2-3'wind wave...needless to say we went slow and steady tractoring through the slop...soaked baits several spots on the way out and for an hour or so after settling in for the night...woke up about 5am, (noticed we drifted about 6 miles south during the night 35:14) and set the gear, trolling 5 rods (2 off the outriggers and three across stern)on a 255 heading....stopped on several meter marks and soaked bait for nothing...continued out to 120:55, water temp 60+, then began our turn around....winds started to gust 15-20, with 2'wind wave and white caps starting to develop....picked up gear about 9am and started our run in for the barn expecting increased swell w/higher wind velocities...however, by noon wind seemed to subside...soaked bait on the first break we encountered on our run out at around the 120:18 with solid temp break as reported by Eric...jumped from 57 to 60.5.....worked this area for nothing....as it turned out the day was gorgeous, however, no LFT love this time out....Now back to dealing with the tire episode...as a side, anyone know of someone that came across a complete wheel w/radial tire on LOVR...that be mine.
Still hopeful for a late Oct/Nov LFT arrival.

Harrell thanks for the last minute recommendations, had I known Wednesday would have turned out so nice I would have maintained the 255 heading further than the 120:55 we turned around on, I was concerned about weather at that point, and the amount of fuel used the day before reaching our destination....burned total of 97 gallons in fuel for the day and half...had 130gals total.

Eric,
Nice to hear you made it back in one piece. There is nothing like being towed in and see the sun set behind you.We had that fine feeling this year out of Danna Point. I would recomend, if any one else has not already, get tow assist. We got towed in from 36 miles and the bill was 1500.Tow assist paid the whole thing. I hope you had it.Looks like a great year for Bonita if you want them. Still hoping for the a big finish for Tuna.We will wait and see.

Fished yesterday (Monday) for 2 limits of rockfish North of Estero Pt. Depths of 60-120'.
10 nice reds, 3 keeper lings + mixed bag.
First fish we caught puked up an octopus and used that for bait the rest of the day.
All fish caught on chrome 3-4 oz torpedo sinkers with treble hooks (secret weapon) tipped with octopus.
Had an offshore breeze on the way out that switched to NW at 15+ at around 2 pm.
Overall a great day of fishing.

Erik, thanks for making the run. Hopefully you will get some sleep tonight.

Eric,
What a day! Had almost the exact same experience about six years ago with Woody when we were 70 miles out. Limped back on one engine to within 13 miles of Morro and then engine 2 caught fire. Got it out and got towed back. Arrived after midnight. Only difference was that we had 20+ albacore all filleted when we got in. Thanks for the story and the scouting.

Ran out yesterday ... what a day.

FAC running out at 25knots.

Ran first to the small swirl that was at 34 50, 121 20. Water was cold and green. Ran further south to aprox 34 19, 121 20 hit a solid break that went from 57 - 60 in about a mile. Was still pretty green but not as bad. Worked the area pretty hard for 5 bonita. There was a bit of life out there but not much.

Had the port side engine eat a raw water impeller and overheat so we started to limp back in on the starboard ... 7knots ... 57 NM. Came across a small spot of breezing albacore after coming in about 5nm but we weren't stopping. 5 hours later we spin the starboard prop hub. Still able to make about 6knots anything more the prop slips, at least we're moving. Then, 26nm from Morro, the overworked starboard engine eats a timing belt... not a nice sound when the sun has set! Called the coastguard and waited... Amazing quick response and we were under tow in about an hour and a half. Great professional group of guys and we were very thankful for the flat conditions, excellent visibility and full moon.

Back on dry land at 12:30am and finally warm in bed at 3:30. 6am wake-up and now trying to teach 7th grade English on 2.5hr sleep.

What a day, but there are fish out there.

George. That's solid info from Stewart I'd store in the cranial. I recieved a 3rd hand report from some bug divers catching albacore close to Catalina prior to the blow. Fish under the kelps caught trolling feathers. They had no live bait and no other info. What's interesting is I have a Confirmed Catch of two smaller albies caught off the west end of Cat just prior to the big blow so thinking the divers rpt is legit and perhaps some fish are out working in ~ <;//>-(

Cubano,
I always keep a few fresh mega bait irons in the boat. Last year we went out 65 from Moss Landing and saw jumpers all around and could not get a strike on the troll or soak. After a couple hours of trolling for nothing we started throwing irons into the jumpers and it worked great. The fish were boat shy, we had to cast way out into the schools, and they would not hit old irons with dull or chipped paint. 12 fish for 3 guys, all on green back (sardine) mega baits. Sure do miss those days. Good Luck tomorrow

Stewart,
Thank you, thank you...I appreciate the feedback, and always looking for "something else" to dazzle them with (lft OF COURSE)...I am not familiar with several of your suggestion however, I did follow along and understand what you were conveying. I hope to mix it up tomorrow. I plan on overnighting it, so any thoughts on night fishing is appreciated as well. For the record, I think everyone who contributes to this Board is awesome, and it just makes it that much more fun....Not to mention the value of the information and experience of those who have walked the talk, if of course you pay attention to the message that is being forwarded..
Thanks again!

Depends on the bait and depth. Surface fish don't always need anything but a Hook ,whatever works is right. If they are deeper use weight, if the wind is blowing, more weight needed.
Normally anywhere from 1/2 oz to 2 oz range will get you down there to biting depths.(fish define)
Whatever else you do on a blind bait stop, chum a bit,a few live ones+ the dead bait+ some chopped up ones from your last trip, etc.
Sardines have more strenght and durability than chovys but I think chovys "taste better" to albys. If they are line shy, 20#mono max
Blood knot a 6' piece of 25-30#flourocarbon leader into your bait line and put a rubbercore above the knot with only one twist so you can knock it off/dowm with your rod tip if you have too.
If they aren't line shy just use any combibation of straigh line and rubbercore/egg/swivel and hook to match the bait size and fish, if you aren't using super premium hooks, hone the tip so its razor sharp.
circle vs regular is another discussion.
The bait being alive and near the fish is more important than the setup if it is reasonably suitable. (no 100# dacron or rusty old rock cod hooks etc) some people swear by light line
I have gone down to 12# but i dont recomend it unless nothing else will get bit.
quality modern 20 will do the job unless they are cows above 35+ and you dont pull too hard.
most people used to use 30# some modern 30 breaks at near 40. Re-tie after fish if line worn, slice off a few feet. So cal guys are using spectra etc. with a long topshot of mono or florocarbon but the connections can be tricky if you arent used to it.
next important item, dont kill the bait with your hook if they arent chowing down.
I was taught to collar hook anchovies but on a private boat I prefer to nose hook them (without hitting the brain), sardines can be dorsal hooked, collar hooked, nose hooked or butt section hooked depending on how you want them to swim. the meter to id the fish is important too.
I dont have a modern one but a high power color CRT finder is much better than most any color or black & gray lcr/lcd that most of us have .
I have used all and the Color Crt is next best thing to a "fish cam" IMHO.
Then you will have better ability to discern
good meter marks . But this is what works historically for thousands of people, but who knows, maybe someone will get them on rockcod gear or salmon bait harnesses.
Meter,Chum, carefully bait, toss a LIVE one,
repeat what works for you.
Tell us any favorites or nifty new ideas.
Also,Remember ,swimbaits and jigs are part of a "bait stop" so I will let someone else describe their favorites there.

Tight Lines to ya.

Mike,
Thanks.
Out of curiosity, when you say to drop bait deep, I'd like to hear what others use as their favor rig (fishing live bait) to accomplish getting the bait down. Personally, I have a few rods set-up with a 1-2 oz. sliding egg sinker above my swivel/leader using a 1/0 circle hook. I would love to try something else, if anyone out there would care to share their particular "secret weapon" when soaking bait.
Thanks in advance.

Harrell brought up some great points about dropping baits deep on meter marks and water color so pay attention. If you have the weather and range 34.20 and 121.25 and further south may be worth a check but it's hard to say. Edge near the 948-spot is like 59-degrees. Not much warm stuff out there but we've caught 'em in that over the years.

George:

My first choice would be to run to 34:38/121:02 set the gear and troll on a 218 heading. This area has both a color break and a temp break. Second choice would be 35:20/121:20 and troll on a 205 heading. Color is not as good as the south area but worth a try.
Since it is late in the season I would keep an eye on the fishfinder and soak bait on any good meter marks.
If you have cell phone reception on your way out give me a call and I will Let you know if there is any later SST/chloro info. 929 1724

The same geniuses that are planning to spend more money from money they don't have in hiring more damn policy makers...sorry, I mean biologists, are the ones having coffee and danishes whie 'managing' the fishery in between bites and jokes about how they're screwing the fisherman.

I wonder if our State representitives would listen???? Maldanado is one, who's the other?

Thinking of making a run tomorrow to that plume that runs roughly from the 1908 to below the donut. Hope we get another chloro shot today.

Anyone else thinking about it?

Is bait available in Morro?

Sean

Did you get any swords so far this year? I just got back from Peru today and pretty slow down there (for commercials), although there were some 100+ Kilos on jigs that came in while I was there. Seems like the tuna are having a difficult time showing up (anywhere) maybe a bit late this year (down there as well as here), good going...hope you stick a few good ones

Anybody can be a landlubber. Any jacka$$ can go to the market and buy fish....
Only a few are willing to make the effort and pay the expenses to venture offshore to catch their own fresh fish. It is the experiences like this that make life so much more colorful and unique.
It is worth fighting the price of fuel, DFG, MPA's, and King Neptune to have those experiences.
Take a kid fishing and see it on their face and you will rekindle the fire and know it is all worth it.

I did some in depth reading on the MPA fishing Bush approved. It's only for MPAs in Federal Waters. Doesn't do poop for State waters, though with the correct attorneys maybe this could be used to override the State's dominion?

Cracka,
First of all what he hell are you doing watching opra. I've got about five hundred things more important to do than wasting my time watching that crap. Consider supplementing your income with another job during the time you are watching opra. This way you won't put as much of a strain on your finances if you want to go fishing.

So I watched Oprah today...the topic was "How to live within your means" House wifes gave tips on coupon clipping, budgets....bla bla bla....

What I did not see was fisherman...cheaper ways to catch fish, $50,000 boat.... $5.00 jigs and fuel....$1.00 sardines

At the rate I am going this year, I am paying upwards of $500 dollars a pound for fillets.

Does anyone else feel my pain?

I've been chomping at the bit for a chance to run for albies that looks even close to good. Most years I'm good for a low return exploratory trip or two but with fuel prices this year and the lousy water it just hasn't been worth looking... It's a bit early but it's looking like this next weekend just might be it!

Ate the last can from last year a week ago...

GREAT STORY TIM.
Maybe true. Id love to hear more.
lobsters dont have to reproduce here to end up here. travel by boat would not explain them all the way from Conception to Monterey but it would explain one big population in one spot.
I wonder if we could get dfg to move a bunch of shorts up here, even if just to feed the otters?
I have never actually seen an otter here eat a lobster so i dont have that first hand but i have seen them eat just about everything else tasty. They once considered planting atlantic lobsters here but they did studies that indicated they would drive our natives away.
now that the natives are gone do they want to reconsider? maybe someone can get a batch over at red lobster , pull the rubber bands off of their claws and toss them into the bay , maybe near the breakwaters at psl and morro?
or would the seals and otters get them before they grew to real meal size? they can take cold water im sure.
anyway, does anyone know that lobster -ship story?

I talked to biologist with DFG. Apparently they are going to add more biologists, at our expense, to work on the California recreational fisheries survey...CRFS. Why don't they just put money in a blender and use it as confetti? In this time of financial crisis, how can the state justify spending more money on this? Ever heard of roads? police officers?...we need more biologists telling us we're bad like we need a hole in the head. CALL OUR STATE REP!

The story goes that many, many years ago, a ship bringing lobsters up the coast sunk off the rocks near Cayucos. The waters here are too cold for their reproduction, so the lobsters just grew bigger. I've seen pictures at the old; now closed, dive shop that was at the base of the Cayucos pier. The bugs were huge. The owner told me this story! They are probably all gone now? Was an interisting story though> Tim

Thank you guys For the info As far as the otters go I knew they are a problem. As much as the other pinapeds out there. If fish and game want to help our fishery They have to find away to control those animals. Until that happens. the protected areas will just feed those things. Or the other thing they can do is clone a bunch of White Sharks. because White Sharks reproduce so slowly. Thanks a lot for the info. I may try some just for fun.

K.G.Mc
For the most part the warm-water fishing out of San Diego is done for the year. There have been a few boats that have gone looking in the last couple of weeks, but meter marks are about as close as any of them have come to seeing fish. Not only has the water cooled significantly in the last 3 weeks, but most of the clean blue stuff has moved on. HOWEVER, they are still seeing quite a few marlin, so if that flips your switch then it might be worth the run.
As far as where to launch, there are a couple of places near San Diego and there is also Dana Point. If you plan on fishing north of the border and/or fishing for marlin, Dana is definately the place to be.
If you want any specifics you can email me at dedevelopment@aol.com.

The most impressive break all season now lies outside down to A-Cyn and well inside the Rod. Hard-edge, 62 to 64-degrees and off-blue. Weather is up right now but comes back down sometime next weekend - Harrell? Anyone have any Intel with the drift-net guys that offload and fuel in Morro? That time of year.

JEFF, LOBSTER COMMENTS.
LOBSTER USED TO BE MORE FREQUENT ON THE CENTRAL COAST, (MONTEREY TO POINT CONCEPTION)

IN THE 60S MY COUSIN USED TO GET HUGE SPINY LOBSTER OUT OF CENTRAL COAST ROCKY AREAS SCUBA DIVING.
BY THE MID 70S THE COUNT WAS DOWN TO NEAR ZERO
BY THE 80S IT WAS ZERO AS FAR AS I KNOW.
I HAVE HEARD OF PEOPLE HOOK AND LINE CATCHING A LOBSTER BY SNAG OR LIKELY ENTANGLEMENT BUT THE
WILD LOBSTER SEEMS NEARLY EXTINCT UNTILYOU GO SOUTH OF PT CONCEPTION. THERE MAY BE A FEW IN UNFISHABLE ARES OFF OF VAFB AND DIVERS USED TO GET SOME OFF THE BASE INTO THE 90S AND MAYBE STILL DO BUT WE DONT HAVE ACCESS. THE BIG CHANGE THAT SEEMS TO HAVE REMOVED THE CLAMS,CRABS,LOBSTER, URCHIN AND
ABALONE IS THE RETURN OF THE CUDDLY TOURIST FRIENDLY OTTER.
ALL OF THE EDIBLES EXCEPT LOBSTER WERE ABBUNDANT AT ONE TIME HERE, I SAW THEM WITH MY OWN EYES AS DID MANY OTHERS. COMMERCIAL FISHING PUT HUGE PRESSURE ON THEM BUT ONLY THE OTTERS WORKING 24/7 WER ABLE TO PUT THEM TO THE NEAR ZERO LEVELS WE HAVE NOW.
THE LOBSTER COULD COME BACK AS IT IS A PROLIFIC BREEEDER AND DRIFTS INTO ITS 1ST YEAR TERRITORY AS A LARVA. WIPING OUT A LOBSTER POPULATION ON ONE REEF ALONE AND THEY ARE OBSERVED TO REPOPULATE. WIPPING THEM OUT OF A GEOGRAPHIC AREA
REQUIRES A BIT OF CURRENT , LUCK AND TIME TO UNDO.
AS THE OTTERS VACCUUM THEIR WAY SOUTH THERE ARE LIKELY GOING TO BE CHANGES IN HOW THOSE CUDDLY LITTLE MOLLUSK AND CRUSTACEAN DESTROYERS
ARE TREATED. THEIR CUTENESS IS A POTENT DEFENSE WEAPON, MISGUIDED ECO TOURISTS LOVE THEM.
THE SANTA BARBARA COMMERCIAL LOBSTER FLEET IS NEXT. THERE IS A LOT OF SPORT HOOPNET FISHING GOING ON IN SO CAL AS YOU KNOW. IF YOU GET A LOBSTER CARD THE BEST BET AROUND HERE MIGHT BE IF THERE ARE LEGAL WATERS OFF OF VAFB THAT YOU CAN ACCESS.
THE CLOSED WATERS ABOVE DIABLO AND BELOW MORRO HAD THE RIGHT ENVIRONMNET.
YOU MIGHT JUST GO CRABBING, JUST KEEP YOUR GEAR AWAY FROM THE COMMERCIALS AS THEY ACCIDENTLY MAY RUN YOUR GEAR OVER OR MISTAKE IT FOR THEIRS AND PULL IT ALTHOUGH I THINK THEY CAN TELL BY THEIR FLOATS.
SO YES ,LOBSTER WERE HERE, NO YOU WONT LIKELY GET ONE, YES YOU ARE WELCOME TO TRY IF YOU CHECK THE REGULATIONS AND GET A CARD ETC.
OUR HOOPNETS OFF OF PSL ONLY BRING UP STARFISH, SPIDER CRABS,SEAWEED AND SEA CUCUMBERS SO FAR BUT WE WERENT TARGETING BUGS.
