Launched Sun10/26 before sunrise from PSL , very few boats for a Sunday. Word from sportlaunch about 35 bonita sat.off white(grn)buoy Got some real nice Sardines with a couple stray anchovies from Deke. left harbor in dark and 100ft or less fog visibility. Headed out 225 deg. intending offshore, Crew Jim B spotted breezer and jumper about 5miles out, water 60.9 mild blue , put 2 clones in and 2 cedars, continued less than a mile at 9 knots and got 1 hit on green yellow clone, Jim pulled in a Bonita about 6-7# est, bled gut, iced back on track, run 5 miles, no more, water cools, pull gear run til 25 miles water warms. gear in 2tuna and 2 bonita feathers, zigzag troll til about 7 miles out and below arguelo bouy til water cooled, headed toward arguelo buoy and got a tripple bonita strike, the 2 on tuna jigs came in, other tangled and lost. big jigs held better. wind came up a bit, ran in to pt purisima, very slow bite 9 small rockfish =5 gophers,1bolina , 2blue 1yellow. Big ground swell space widely and huge surf churning up shore . wasted much time here, worst I've seen purisima. headed up to sal, fished for zero at point and headed back315got choppy, slowed to crawl til breakwater, launch closing4pm stayed 4us(Thank you Guys),cleaned fish(bonita sahimi excellent). We were greeted by Mike H (Onieda B) who had spent day at purisima for very few rockfish. Taurus reports lots of bonita off sal(I beleive him). 114 mile of boat travel but the fresh bonita was a treat after no tuna for me for a couple years. still hoping for albies but fatlady warming up. Swell was large but spaced so far it was a non issue in deep water, windchop is ballbustr for planing boats. quite a surge in launch basin at retrieval/low tide. Thanks to Jim for crewing while my brother had to kid sit. Mike good seeing you again, your report of being in the same boat rockfish wise mad us feel a bit less incompetent after the great reports of lings at purisma sat. If you have a tuna "jones" go get soem bonita, bleed and ice them, use light tackle and pretend you are catching albies. If you Bleed and ice they are good for Sashiimi, grill, Smoker, Canner etc. if you dont they are catfood or at best canner fish. Rockfish had a bad day, it happens but we dont get schools of bonita every year. water is full of life off central coast, fish were packed with squid. Go Get em while weather holds. |

Paul, Right in front of the AB farm, just out side of kelp, about 70ft of water. 1st drop then about 2 hours of nothing then second fish about 55-60ft water. Both on Sardines. We then moved South headed back to Morro Bay, stopped in about 5 other places from 75-45ft for nothing. Hope it helps.... |

I fished off the abalone farm for my last trip this year. Tried for that one last big halibut. Bait was frisky huge sardines. Drift was OK and we tried hard and long. But, alas, no hali takers today. We caught a lot of short lings and one huge one, which we kept for dinner. Put the boat away for winter. Maybe El Nino will begin this winter and we will again see the tuna close in. Been a blast, mates. Will out |

HAHAHA... "...MPA's make fishing better." that's funny Steve. The bite has been very off for the last couple days...it happens. At least we live in an area where even when the fishing is slow, you can still catch plenty for dinner if you pay attention and try hard. Don't hit the same spot twice if only a couple bite...those were the only hungry ones. If you keep moving, you will catch a few at each spot. Same thing when there is no drift. |

Steve, I don't know why the fishing was slow for us. Had lots of activity on the meter but couldn't get any bite going. The 4 lings we caught (27-29") were from 4 different spots and the only fish we caught at each spot. Drift was good and set up several times on each spot. Using squid, live dines and various plastics. There were a few other boats in the area and they seemed to be moving around a lot too. We were there from about 10:30 to 2:30. Oh well, that's fishing. Bert, That is strange that you had slow fishing at Purisma yesterday. Were you fishing around the slack tide? I've found the fishing to be slow there when there is no current or drift. We've had great fishing down there every trip...highlighted by lots of BIG lings. I wonder if the new MPA down there is making the fishing that much better because the big fish are migrating out of the reserve and into fishing areas??? bummer no albacore...hopefully the halibut will continue to bite. best fishes, steve |

On Saturday we tried for rockfish in 180' of water off Hazard beginning at 11 and ended at 2:30. The bite was very slow. Only 2 7lb reds and a few small assorted rockfish. I wonder if the new reserves are causing too much fishing pressure in the few ares left to fish? Bob |

Headed out of MB @ 6:30, foggy, ran SW to the 121 line, put in about 18 miles out of MB. Temp went from 56 to a high of about 59 for us; color was bluish. Trolled south to about Pt. Sal, nothing for us, no meter marks, one pod of porpoise but no life with them. Pulled the plug and ran to Purisima, overcast and cold. Couldn't get it to go there either. Ended up with 4 keeper lings and 2 brown rockfish but that was all we could catch. Tried various spots that worked for us before but couldn't make it happen. Stopped at the coke plant on the way in and caught one shovelnose, released. Headed back to MB, foggy again, got back at 5:30, 118 miles total. Water was a little washy but not too bad, ran 20-25 coming back in. Bert Bert |

Looked for albacore today out of Avila. Hit 61 degree water about 8 miles out. Also, lots of seals, porpoises and birds. Didn't put in until 121.00 + 35.00. Not much signs of life. We trolled about 25 miles south west. Got a single and double on Bonita at 34.50 + 121.14(between santa lucia bank + arguello buoy), Trolled down to 34.40 + 121.15. then in about 5 miles, and worked our way back up to where we started. We were 12-17 miles outside arguello buoy. Saw a few sunfish, and some sharks finning around where the bonita were. Water temp was consistent around 61 degrees all day. Color was decent too. Heard a couple other boats talking about heading up to rodrigez and arguello canyon, but could not make contact. Sounded like they may have been out of SB? Weather wasnt bad. -Donny. |

Hey Steve Hendricks, Weren't you involved with the Cal Poly fish tagging deal? If so, I caught one of the tagged fish today. It was a gopher and I called the phone number and left a message with the tag number but threw back the fish. They will have that info on their message machine. If you could relay the coordinates 35.16.718 and 120.54.468 to them I would appreciate is as I did not give them that info. After talking to the fish counter, I realized we should have kept it but I don't keep too many of those kind. Give me a call on where I can find out how far it traveled etc. Thanks, Chip 431-2602 |

PLANNING SUNDAY MORN PSL. Plans will refine as/if/when we get out of harbor. If running conditions look good and swell is spaced widely enough we will head offshore with intent for Bonita or Whatever(hopefintuna?) we can scratch up , with a fallback plan for rockfish. Will probably attempt a bit more southwest or west than optimum because of ride back factors. will share any info vhf 68. We leave radio on dual watch 16/68 Also , anyone new to bonita be sure to bleed them right away and keep them cool , dont treat them like rockfish or you will not enjoy eating them, they taste ok canned but they are awful fresh or even smoked if you dont treat them right IMHO. they are great fun, dont waste them if you are lucky enough. plan B is purisima then run offshore, chasing "radio fish" if any. See you on the water God willing and the creek dont rise. |

hey - first time poster here. Great site! I do most of my fishing North of Cayucos but recently bought a couple of Yak-type fish killers which I plan to use at PSL and MB. We are set up for bait and we have basic electronics. I'd sure appreciate some GENERAL advice on spots to try within those harbors. I realize nobody wants to give away any secrets... Would be willing to exchange info via email with anyone interested in some good coastline north of Cayucos. Thanks! |

Greetings, Headed down to Purisma at 30 knots yesterday. Flat calm and greasy until about 1 pm when the wind picked up to 15 knots on our way home and we had to pound out the last 10 miles The fishing was great as usual. We kept 8 nice 8-12 pound lings (plus released a 20# and 2 other keepers, and lost a couple very heavy fish), 1 6# red, about 15 2-4# bolina, a few nice chuckleheads, and 4 boccacio (released 2 others). Steady pick all morning with a few hot bites thrown in. Lots of fun down there! The wind prevented us from heading out to check out that water, but it was 60 on the beach. good luck to those searching for longfins today. best fishes, steve |

I have put a bonito trip on my schedule for Mon. Since we fish for bonito the same way as albacore...I guess if a hungry albacore is around he/she might bite a hook. More likely to catch bonito though. Price is 100.00 we leave at 0600 if there are enough people to go. We will have some live bait. limited load, 20 people max. No guarantees. |

Steve, We are probably going to make a run down south to Purisma on Saturday. If you go tomorrow, swing out a little and check the warm water coming in. Santa Maria buoy has been up to 64.0 and Arguello buoy up to 62.0 degrees. Water appears to be halfway clean. Let us know if you find something. Bert

WEll, offf season must be near for here I am posting again. After all these years I just learned a new trick for preping fish for storgae or the table. Of course rinse fillets in salt water (fresh water breaks down fish) immediately after cutting and don't let it sit in water after at all. My mother in law, one of the most wonderful ladies you'd ever know and a great chef, soaks briefly again with about a cup+ of white vinegar/1/2gallon of water and lets drain. The fillets' come out perfectly white/pink with no more blood & yellowish gut stain etc. Vacum seal or use a zip lock submergeing in a bucket of cold water to squeeze the air out as you close the zip/seal. Beautiful! And here's my new favorite, very easy rockfish recipie. Place rockfish fillets in a glass baking pan, cover with coarsely sliced yellow onion and a small bunch of cilantro. Garlic, salt, pepper etc. to taste. Smother with olive oil - more than you would think is needed. (My wife swears olive oil is actually good for you. That or she's trying to get rid of me early.) Bake until the fish flakes and the onions are clear. Serve over rice or use for fish tacos!! There's never leftovers in my house from this one. Have a good rest the season and thanks for a great year. |

Nice shootin' Tex, here's one of my personal favorties! Possum Ceviche SERVES 4 -6 Ingredients 1. 1 lb boneless possim meat (can substitue with rockfish, halibut or any nice white firm fish, scallops or whole shrimp.) 2. Juice from 6-8 limes (strained and avoid squeezing the membranes into the juice as they make the juice bitter.) 3. 1 cup diced fresh tomato 4. 1 sweet pepper, chopped (Orange, red, yellow, green, I like to mix the colors for presentation ) 5. 4 - 6 tablespoons chopped cilantro 6. 1/4 teaspoon salt 7. 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar 8. 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 9. 1/4 teaspoon oregano 10. 2 jalapeno or serrano peppers, chopped (or more to suit your taste) 11. 2 tablespoons white vinegar 12. 1 medium onion, finely chopped 13. 1 pressed or finely chopped garlic clove 14. 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 15. 1 dash Tabasco sauce 16. lettuce leaf (to line serving bowls) 17. avocado (optional) 18. black olives, sliced (for garnish) (optional) Directions 1 Dice the meat (approximately 1/2-inch dice) and marinate with 1/2 the lime juice in the fridge overnight remixing a couple times. (this step cooks the meat) Drain off most of the juice (just leave it moist). 2 Add remaining ingredients except lettuce, avocado and olives. Do this preferably a few hours before serving & refrigerate. 3 Toss well and arrange in individual serving bowls that are lined with the lettuce leaves. 4 If you wish garnish with sliced avocado and sliced black olives and serve with saltines or your favorite cracka Also, Joe King just found a freezer alarm that will CALL YOU so your possum meat don't spoil!! http://www.homesecuritystore.com/ezstore123/dtproductzoom.asp?producti d=1627 |

Bob, You shot a possum under your freezer? What the hell were you thinking? I'm a possum lover by the way and I wouldn't be surprized if Fish and Game show up and you will be on the front page of the fishwrap. Were you in the city limits? What was the possum's name? Did he have a family? I've never heard of such a heartless act. Please stay away from sea otters in the future. Do you have a video for You Tube? Get ready for the off season, here it comes. On the subject of freezers, I shot a possum hiding under mine and unknown to me until it was too late, the bullet severed the cord. The freezer was full of a year's worth of game and the smell was so bad I had to get rid of the whole freezer. Thanks Darby for the info below and thanks for providing bait this season. Just did a quick search and found these links for a freezer alarm. I have the $15 one and like it fine. I'll try to get some in the store too. Hate to see good fish & game go to waste. (Unless it's the kind that takes our taxes and fishing rights, then treats us like criminals because we carry a fishing rod.) http://www.amazon.com/Maxi-Aids-TA10-Freezer-Alarm/dp/B00012K6GA http://www.kitchenkapers.com/cdn-audio-visual-refrigerator-freezer-ala rm.html http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0017651515725a.shtml |

I know one way to get the albacore bite going, shut down the live bait. I am leaving next Monday for a couple weeks hunting. We'll make one more trip this weekend (if Doug gets the boat ready) and when he runs out it's over. He may sell a reciever where you can put your own lock on it and self serve but you'll have to talk to him about that. He runs the bait business, I just run the boat. Side note on the freezer. I friend of mine gave me a little alarm that sticks on the front. Only had it for a month and has saved me from a meltdown once already! Can't cost more than $20. Well worth it!

We tried for albacore today out from the rock 45mi on a 257 heading. The water was a good color but the last 5 mi were only 57.3 degrees. Most of the sea life stopped at 38 mi. When we first put in at 37 mi we caught one 8 lb bonito. Also on the way back in we had numerous bonito strikes. The warmest water was about 30 mi out and was 58.6. There were some porpous at 40 mi and an occational meter mark at 100 ft. I had to be in by 2:00 so there wasn't a lot of fishing time. The bait was great from the Billy Boy. Final count was 1 bonito. Well I hope the fishing for albies is better north than south. We went out about 45 miles to 35'00" to around 121'10" and out to the doughnut. There was sea life at 25 miles and some deep marks but no takers. We found a good temp break from 59 to 61 degrees and followed that, cut back and forth for nothing. We did not meter anything past 25 miles. Water was greenish blue. I know there were two other boats around and one boat got some bonita. Thanks to Mark (Ms Mackey) and BJ for helping cover lots of water. Hopefully they got some after we left the area. The bait from the bait dock was mostly anchovies but we got a fair scoop and they stayed alive all day. Great day on the water-no swell, no wind, no fish. Did run through 5 different rain squalls in the early morning. Also saw a blue whale and some humpbacks plus several sharks. Best of luck if you go north. |

Tuna hunters, if any one is going to try for tuna i would recomend you going to 35.20 and 121.44 and troll to the 122.40 line. this is the best water and color i have seen so far. I thought about running on Friday, but went bottom fishing instead, Chuck posted some of the big lingcods we caught. The water color has cleared up real nice and the water temp are at 61 degrees. I have to work all weekend, but I would bet on there being Tuna there. It is only 37 mile from Morro and the weather is perfect.Good luck if some one tries Mike |
