Had a fun day on the water on saturday morning. got out early and was trolling on a 150 heading near the red light close to shore when we got a triple hook up to start the day on some 7-9lb PACIFIC BONITO. One came unbuttoned so we iced 2. pretty much the same story for the next hour. Meter marks everywhere and all the other boats around us were stopped too so everyone was having fun.Swell was getting bigger and close so we were eager to back after getting our "tuna fishing" done for the year! They all came on the troll on rapalas and feathers and whatever the hell else you would drag behingd the boat. Pretty fun. Big fish was just over 13lbs and made 5 or 6 good runs.. put a smile on our faces.

I have a mooring in PSL that is ready for service that I haven't used in years. The one I have costs about $2000 and I will sell for $500. Service costs about $250 per year and rent for the space it covers is about $750 per year. It handles a 25 ft boat and costs about $200 to upgrade to a bigger boat. 541-4992 Bob Hather |

Fished out of Morro Bay today. Offshore wind swell was fierce. 3-4 feet in some cases smacking right into the side of the boat. Windspray after windspray. However we endured and made it to the AB farm about an hour later. The bite was good Not WFO but steady all day. The first drift was at about 10 knots NO motor just wind. Drifted Dines from Doug from about 8am-1pm. We boated a total of 4 Flatties, one legal first then followed by 3 fish about 27, 29, 30lbs respectively. Lost a 5th good size fish about 10 minutes into pull. Broke leader. Also caught a few short lings, blues, goher and a very nice BIG Red. Broke my net in half on the last 30lber....crappy weather.....perservered...and got some good fish. Fun day!

Dont waste those Bonita Guys. They are Good To eat, But you must bleed them ASAP and keep them cold all day. Gut them and pack ice in cavity -is even better, or add a little salt to your ice if you have a lot of ice. They are not forgiving like albacore, rockfish etc. Otherwise, you are fishing for catfood. It is good Raw,Grilled,Smoked,Canned etc maybe not the best deep fried but you could do that too. I learned the hard way as a young man who swore to eat what I Take home. You can wait til later to remove bloodline. The old icechestis OK Butit has to have ice in it. not just enough for the 12 pack. buy it at port before you go out if you dont have access to enough at home. 60degree salt water is not cold enough to store them in all day. If everyone knows this I appologize but im so tired of seeing Guys at the fish cleaning station with dry, stiff Curled up bonita with dark glossless fillets that are nearing jerky temp. Their families are not going to like it. Jim B(jazzy) make sure to set a good example for everyone. also, try that bass pole or that trout rod, you will grin ear to ear, gauranteed, and take newbies and kids with you so they will start out loving fishing. if you use less than 15# test you may want a small net or gaff or just use 4ft of 30+# and flip them over the gunnel' by hand, and tiel good knots. their teet will say up 8-12# mono so you might have to check line end and retie somtimes. Wish I could be there. |

Josh, When we fished Purisima in May, 2 of us caught 4 legal lings, some nice reds and a 6# cabezon. First time down there and we just motored around until we metered fish on the sonar. Last trip, 10/25 was slow for us, fished the same spots and moved around to some others but still managed 4 lings along with a couple of bolina, but that was all. Big area and we fished mostly from 70-90 feet of water. If you really want numbers, I can go out to my boat and fire up the GPS. Let me know. Bert |

No trouble Will. We need purists when we get confusing. Mea Culpa. Im Guilty of spreading the Name. As a lifelong central "Kalifornia" Saltwater fisherman I understand there is a time for "Taxonomical precision". and Fun! I learned most of the Street Names for our Quarry and use them interchangebly with proper names and scientific Names.(boored in off season) But since this is a sportfishing board I often say BonitA instead of "pacific bonitO" . even the biologist speak to fishermen this way or they wont be able to communicate. Just as I dont say we caught a 10 kilogram ophiodon elongatus, I say a 22# lingcod. I might say longfin instead of albacore instead of thunus alalunga, (only a relative of T. albacares!). Heck, everything is a restaurant is rock cod or red snapper to the waiter. and Deke would never speak to us again if we went over and said do you have any engraulis mordax or just sardinops sagax in the receiver? although I Admit I never thought anyone sounded smart calling our local croaker "king cod or king fish" as a waiter in the olde port inn once tried to describe the special of the day to us. Bonita is just the local word, its all local ,on the east coast their bluefish is nothing like our "blufish". Bocacio are "red Snapper". whatever you call em I hope we have a season for Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, next year. And go get those wild bones while you still can , its one of the few sportfish opportunities we have had this year. as is anything in a seafood restaurant . |

Josh, They are in my dad's boat. Just head down there and turn on the fish finder. Not much relief down there, so just motor around until you see some fish on the finder...if you don't see fish, don't stop to fish. I usually fish from 50-80', but there are definitely a lot of fish deeper. The fishing seems to be slow around the slack tide. Sorry I don't have numbers. If it is slow, stop and fish pt. sal on the way back...it is always good there! post a report. later, steve ps be careful going down there is the NW wind is going to blow...it is painful!!! |

I know that i will get in trouble for this, but it is "Pacific BONITO". I can't helpt, it is the biologist in me. Will Pacific Bonito (click me) Family: Scombridae (Mackerel and Tunas) Genus and Species: Sarda chiliensis Description: The body of the Pacific bonito is cigar-shaped and somewhat compressed. The head is pointed and conical, and the mouth is large. The color is dark blue above, dusky on the sides becoming silvery below. There is a number of slanted darkish stripes along the back. Pacific bonito are the only tuna-like fishes on the California coast that have the slanted dark stripes on their backs. Range: Pacific bonito occur discontinuously from Chile to the Gulf of Alaska, with the greatest area of abundance in the northern hemisphere occurring in warm waters between Magdalena Bay, Baja California, and Point Conception, California. Natural History: The preferred food of bonito appears to be small fishes, such as anchovies and sardines. Occasionally, they rely heavily upon squid in their daily diet. Bonito may not spawn successfully every year in California, but successful spawning does take place further south each year. The bulk of southern California spawning appears to take place from late January through May. The free floating eggs require about 3 days to hatch at average spring water temperatures. Young fish resulting from local successful spawnings are usually first observed by the various live bait haulers when they are 6 to 10 inches long in the early summer months. These fish will often weigh 3 pounds or more by the fall of the year and by May of the following year many will weigh 6 or 7 pounds. Fishing Information: Pacific bonito are excellent fighters and have hearty appetites. Once a school is aroused they will take almost any bait or lure that is tossed their way. Most Pacific bonito are taken by a combination of trolling and live bait fishing. The schools are located by trolling feathers, and live anchovies or squid pieces are used to bait the fish once located. Fishing for bonito generally takes place offshore in 300 to 600 feet of water, but may occur next to kelp beds when the fish are near shore. Pacific bonito may arrive off of California as the ocean warms in the spring, but may never show up if oceanic conditions dictate colder than normal water temperatures. Bonito anglers generally catch 1 to 4 year old fish, weighing between 3 and 12 pounds. Pacific bonito fishing tapers off in the fall as the water cools, but persistent anglers still find good bonito fishing around warm water outfalls associated with power plants. Other Common Names: bonehead, Laguna tuna, magneto, striped tuna, California bonito, ocean bonito. Largest Recorded: 40 inches; 25 pounds. Habitat: Pelagic Environment Return to Top of Page |

One Bonita, one ling and half limits on the roch fish. The bonita was aproxs 1.5 mile past the red can. I thought I needed to check my Transducer for the fishfinder, it was reading a water temp over 61.5 all day. But tempbreak.com says it was warm. |

We generally troll at 6 MPH with 4 rods. When the bite starts getting crazy we cut back to 3 rods. The lures work the top 5 feet of water and we don't use the deep dive lures, just the normal CD-14's and the Yo-Zuri equivalant. All colors work but the green mac from Yo-Zuri seemed to be picked up the most. A morning bite for sure. After 1:00 it's dead...tight lines!!!

Taurus had said several days agothat they were near the outside buoys, there have been a lot lately when people go out. Few went out last few days. Troll between the red light and the northwest buoy "white"(green) light. look for birds and bait, Tuna clones, bonita feathers, chrome lures, bone jigs, rapalas, bait anything but your rockcod sinker should work. A couple of weeks ago they were at point sal and before that some were also at the diablo canyon intake. Just get out there and find them, look and troll and listen to the vhf and share info with the others. no guarantees but if you find them you will have fun. use light saltwater gear for best results(fun). Bleed, gut and ice them asap. If you go rock fishing, troll on your way out and keep your eyes open. Ask marty at the launch if he has any info. Your chances are Very good. |

I live in Santa Barbara and have gone out the past two saturdays fishing for Bonito. We have done very well each time catching an easy 10-15 fish between 5-9 pounds. We troll Rapala's at the oil rigs and makes for a very fun filled day without having to travel very far offshore. Well worth the time to travel up here. Not sure with the most recent weather if that will change the bite, but if the swell is down I going out again this Sat. |

Marty, There have been a lot of bonita out of SB and the Gaviota coast. We fished up the line from Gaviota on Oct. 20 returning from a surf trip and caught six in only a short time. Lots of bait and life near the beach but we caught ours trolling just outside of the kelp line. Didn't try to put numbers on because of a limited ice supply. The fish we did catch were around 6 to 7 lbs. but I have had a few freinds fishing for halibut catch some as large as 10 lbs. I also talked to a commercial on the 26th who said he caught fish all the way from Miguel to the one mile out of SB many of which were of the larger variety. I will prob try to go out fri or sat with plenty of ice. Canned bonita is pretty good although I would rather be canning albacore. John |

Considering that our season is almost over and that for the most part we have had slim pickings (no tuna or salmon) I would not hesitate to bag a nice soupfin. If bled, cleaned and iced they are very tasty indeed, reminds me a lot of Wahoo. We got one a few weeks ago drifting for flats. |

That soupfin would be tempting to me as would thresher but I haven't ever got one to the boat. They used to catch a few off the santa maria river while either salmon or halibut fishing. I have had threshers trash my salmon gear and do some nice aerobatics nearby but none to gaff. Last self caught shark I ate was a spiny dogshark in 1979 while a starving student at Cal poly, it was good baked in lemon ,butter and wrapped in foil. but skinning it was the end of a pair of pliers. I have killed a couple 3-4' dogsharks and given them away but I dont want to repeat the skinning process, anyone have a better way. maybe cook skin on? I though inshore sharks would return after the gillnets went, I cant blame that on the otters? The offshore sharks all got Finned by the foreigners as far as I can tell, I only see them as singles now, smaller and mostly blues. but i dont miss the days of losing fish to blues. I once ate great white served to me by the owner of the old frenches tackle shop in avila, it was good, but they banned that, mixed blessing, danger for divers and swimmers, danger for seals too. If you catch a shark at least consider releasing it but dont feel guilty eating a legal, theres plenty of stuff the law makes us waste, even dead that I would trade for the sharks. |

Yeah Chip you're right about the shark thing. I advocate catch and release on the sharks all the time now. That Soupfin was my last and only keeper. It was great meat and the 50-60lbs was more than enough for some time. Now, I'd much rather chase the same sharks I catch down on another day rather than keep it in the freezer for a few years. but to each their own. |

Dan, we caught one last year and they are really god eating, however, be prepared to take some smack from some on this board that don't believe in killing any sharks. Remember, it is your choice and there isn't any season on them. |

A couple buddies and I went out Friday aboard the psycho fish and headed up by the ab farm for a nice day on the water and a reasonable mix of rock cod. One keeper ling and at least 8 shorts. But the fun really started when we moved into shallow water to try for halibut. After drifting for a while enjoying cold tecate's I reeled up my light weight pole to see if the bait was still kicking and thought I was hooked on a rock when it would not come up. Then the rock took off like a rocket, spooled me but we fired up the boat and chased this beast. After about 20 minutes and another spool run I got the fish to the boat, it was a 5-6' Soupfin shark! We amazingly were able to get it to gaff on my light pole and cod rig. What a blast! Also it was nice that everyone was able to steer clear of the jaws. We killed it and cleaned it on the spot. It hit the grill later that night with an olive oil, butter, garlic and lemon marinade. I really did not know what quality to expect from the 50 plus lbs of steaks we got from the shark. Wow, awesome, like fresh sword fish. Loven it. Has anyone caught a soupfin around here? Are they common? They sure do taste good! |

Jocelyn I found the info on the hatcheries on the Coastsidefishingclub web site. you have to register and then go to the discussion boards.Lets hope the count will end up a lot better than last year. Lake Shasta is the lowest it has been in 16 years we need lots of rain for these fish to have chance. Mike |

Coleman Hatchery has taken 11 million eggs. Their target is 12 million fall run salmon eggs so they are getting close. they have taken in approx. 7,700 adult fish with a target of 9,000. The run has been slowed down to about 100 fish per day entering Battle Creek. So far they have counted 12,500 entering the creek. The fish that do not enter the hatchery will hopefully spawn in the creek itself. Nimbus Hatchery still has not opened the ladder yet due to warm water but they are expecting to open it next tuesday after the weekend storms. Feather River Hatchery's numbers have not been updated since 10/18. 2008 adults is 4,170 compared to last year's 3884 through the same date. Merced hatchery through 10/25 for 2008 is 2 adult fish. thankfully there is 1 male and 1 female. last year through this date there were only 3 adult fish. Mokelumne through 10/25 for 2008 is 6 adults. last year through 10/25 was also 6 fish. Iron Gate Hatchery has received through 10/25 2008 7,191 adults, last year through 10/25 3,884. The jack count is really up this year, 956 compared to 150 in 2007. Trinity Hatchery the ladder is still closed. |

WOW what an eyeopener , if we managed a company the way DFG manages we would be thrown in jail in a heartbeat , thats just downright FRAUD no matter what they say or how they try to SPIN it , the gov needs to take them to task on this one. Blackie |

Sure, let's let DFG increase our license fees... after reading this, I think they have enough cash on hand. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/26/SP9H13NF3B .DTL |

Marty, I usually run long range on Thursday, I fish San Simeon and it costs $86.00. The last two trips of the season will be $100.00 and (weather permitting will go to the cape). I haven't heard anything about Federal waters opening for 2008 or 2009. www.centralcoastsportfishing.com |

Brit, I'll be fishing somewhere between Piedras Blancas and Cape San Martin, it all depends on the weather and how the fish bite, we did pretty good at the lighthouse today. The 29th and 30th will be limited to 27 passengers MAX no matter what. On these dates, reservations are made when you pay for the trip, but If you call me on the phone, I will hold a couple of spots for you until you know if your son can get off work. 704-2084 Marty ~ www.centralcoastsportfishing.com |

psl harbor used to be good, but not lately, near rocks and under piers were best. lately its starfish , spider crabs and kelp if anything and an occaisional swell shark. night time was best but some in daytime. My brother tried a year or so ago and got zilch keepers and lots of the above junk. Gear, hoopnets and pyramid traps with rock cod carcass bait. Offshore- above lighthouse @ Santa Rosa Reef edges about 88 ft also used to have some but your floats will be a navigation hazard there somewhat. the commercials used to drop lots of traps in 100-200 feet but I havent been paying attention. Who knows, you might drop some traps , go rock fishing and pull your traps on the way in? let us know if you find anything worthwhile, I think the otters may have cleaned the keeper ones out pretty well but I hope Im wrong. |

Michele, Where are you going on the special long range trip Nov. 29 and 30? How many people are you taking, and what is required to reserve a spot? My son and I want to go on the 29th, but he won't know if he can get the day off of work until Nov. 15 or 16. Thanks, Britt |

Fished out of Morro Bay on Tues. Planned on heading up to my spot North of Cambria. Had good water until we tried to get around the Point. Ran into large swells with three foot wind chop on top. Stopped and ducked inside by the Ab Farm. The bite was slow and we had about two or three fish in the box! Headed for home when we saw a huge flock of birds working some kelp North of Constantine. Stopped and just killed the blues. It was a no Red or Ling day but at least we had fish. Good luck to all and I have to go back to work until next week. |
