I stand corrected. I was having trouble downloading adobe to the lateest version. Banana boy, I have two boats and I spend about 700 hours a year sportfishing, both freshwater and saltwater. My biggest problem is having enough time to keep up with the regs. My intent of the first post was to have some people look at the regs to make sure that peoplle would not get into trouble. Good thing your the expert.

Had 3 boats out today for 57 bonito.
We'll be closed Thanksgiving Day.
Open before 6:am Fri-Sun.
I'll be in early after Rockcod season (Sundays the last day of '08) as long as the Bonito stays around. Deke should have bait all weekend.
Have a Great Turkey day, eat, watch some football, and get ready for some fishin' this weekend.

Hey Chris seems like your coming in a little hot.

I hope your not referring to Harley when you say

"Why would you argue or mention limits without even know the regs. Do you even fish anymore?better get updated for 2009, and get out and fish instead of fishing the internet."

You shouldn't disrespect people. Harley admittedly said

"I think the limit is 5 per person. I haven't checked the regs in a couple of years, but that is what it used to be. It would be a bummer if someone got a ticket thinking the limit is the same as albacore."

He was showing a genuine concern for people to do just as you suggested "know the regs". I don't post this because he is a bro of mine. I have only met him once and have fished on the water around him probably a half dozen times and spoke to him on the radio those days. I post it because I respect him as a man. He works hard and fishes harder and does not wait till someone tells him where the fish are. He goes north, south, and fishes local he knows the regs on the things he fishes for.

I think a better commit would have been to reassure folks that yes the limit is (?) and maybe quote the section in the book so we could all refer to it. Many more stars would have been next to your name.

Oh and Chris I am stoked for your buddy Luke sounds like a great day I hope he post some pics. I wish I could have got my kids out there today on that bite I hope they stick around a little longer.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone

There have been posts of some large numbers of bonies caught. I think the limit is 5 per person. I haven't checked the regs in a couple of years, but that is what it used to be. It would be a bummer if someone got a ticket thinking the limit is the same as albacore.

If you have a boat you can fish Newport bay. Excellent fishing. Drift the channels with plastics for Spotted bay bass or sand bass. If you want to fish outside the bay, hang a left outside the breakwall and fish the kelp off Laguna Beach. If you want you can take a right and head for Huntington flats. Good luck and have fun.

p.s. I have no clue where to fish there, but I used to live in Del Mar and there was geat surf fishing south of 15th Street, where I used to live. Halibut, corbina, spot fin crokers, and barred surf perch were always there...

B.A. Debbie and Larry's wife canned them that afternoon-night. They got 51 jars of tuna. I have 2 smokers and I don't think I can get them all done in one day. I will do what I can this Saturday and the rest Sunday. The 2 big ice chest I had hold about 25 depending on size. We quit at 23. We figured that 23 with the 9, opps make that 8, from Monday was enough. Need to keep a few in the water to breed!

Wayne, make sure Bill didnt leave any more fish in your boat ;-) We hear he's known for that.
I only kept2, Jimmy B kept 7 or 8 , we let nearly a dozen more go, some with our lures!
after we dropped we dropped to 12# test spinning rods for extreme fun, didntget to try the 6# test.
we headed out for rockcod at about the time you went in. Jim picked up an almost 29" ling .
I hope you are getting those fish iced bled and cleaned, they are really better that way.
You got them home pretty quick anyway.
Are Bill or Larry going to can them,or do one of you have access to a big smoker?
Glad to see you guys having that much legal fun.
I reccommend you get a bigger ice chest if you end up fishing albies next year(hope)
Was a great sportfishing experience and good weather. +Jim B jr, thanks for your help
Take that 19 footer out if fish stay around .

I think the 307 bonito count was very conservative. If anyone did not get a limit it was because they didn’t want one. The minute your tackle hit the water you were pulling one out. You could even pick and choose the ones you wanted to keep because you knew there was another one right behind it. We had 3 of us but had to stop at 23 because both of the ice chests were full. Fighting them on light tackle was a blast. I don’t know about the rest of you but I am sooooo sore from all of that I can barely move. The fun was worth the pain. Now if we could only get the salmon and albi to do the same thing next year.

Cats were not meant to eat corn, rice and barley. They were designed to eat Bonito. Cats in the wild would never eat the way dry cat food makers feed your feline buddy. Studies now show dry cat food offers convenience to the owner, and poor nutrition for kitty. Bonito will put your cat on the road to better health and a longer happier life…….hope this helps.

cat food my ass!...Bleed completely right after catching, then right into the ice, lots of ice, wash em down with salt water first so they are clean and wet, then bury them in the ice until you get home, fillet, remove darkmeat and all blood pudding and bones...put enough split fillets in a big gallon size ziplock bag with plenty of olice oil, fresh garlic or garlic powder, whatever spices or herbs you want, the juice of 2 frsh lemons or more if desired, roll em around in that for 15 minutes, let em set another 10 min.......get the weber grill nice and hot and oiled up, slap em on cook on pretty high heat so they get nice brown grill marks, the flip em over and finish with the same with another lemon or 2 of juice being sqeezed over the fish while cooking....salt to taste when done, and hopfully the middle of the fillet will be pink and on the rare side....Bonita taste as good or better than most tunas when cared for in the boat and griled, canned , or smoked....Pea out..

absolute wide open bite on the bonito today.(anywhere from lighthouse to redlight 150-130 water.) 30 total by 11:00. Would of had limit by 9:00 but we ran out of room in the first ice chest. Lucky for us my uncle and cousin had a late start launching so we called for a second ice chest. as soon as the second chest arrived we limited in a half hour. very fun. Thumbs up to all out in the chaos today. fish-on!

No report from us.

Left MB launch @ 6:30 am, got to break-wall, gave it throttle and had bad vibration and loud rumble. Limped back to ramp, went home and pulled outdrive - bad gimbal bearing (Volvo Penta). Ordering parts tomorrow.

Good going on everyone who slayed the bonito; next time for us.

Easy early limits and what a kick to be on to all that fight and action. The area was anything out past and around the red light. Lots of fun!!!!!

That's pretty much the same way I fish for Perch, but I think I will switch from 8# to a 6# leader on 8# line. I will definetely try those bloody sandworms this year. I also use a light bullet style worm weight above the egg slider to cut down on fouling with kelp. See you out there sometime and thanks for the info.

JOHN
As to the perch fishing , I always fish the last two hour of the incoming tide , I look for areas that have a lot of scrubbing action on the bottom, I look for the sandpipers working the sand for crabs , they wash back out , and I stay on the move until I locate a spot where the fish seem to be ,
Sometimes the fish are almost right at your feet other times they are in the far wave,
I fish ultra light fresh water spinning gear with 6# test, carolina rig with a 18 to 20 inch leader , bloody sand worm on a size 4 hook, weight size depends on the surf conditions , you got to keep the bait on the bottom.
Ok John thats about all I got , other than that you can join me some day on the beach .

Bert,
We were pretty much straight off the light house. Look for working birds, it is that simple. The rapalas were segmented, about 4-5 inches long, black or blue on top and silver bodies. They work way better than feathers. The water was surprisingly cold, 57-58 degrees. We trolled at 6 knots with the rapalas about 75 to 100 feet behind the boat. Hope you have fun..

Hey Will, Thanks for the report.

We are going to head down that way (out of MB) in the morning. Were you straight out of PSL? Sounds like if the weather holds they may be easy to find (Bonito). Having not fished for these in years, what size of Rapalas were you using and was any color better than others? Also did you try any feathers?

We will give a report when we get back.

Had to go out one more time this morning. Woody and I left PSL at about 7:00AM and headed out to have some fun with the bonito. About 3 miles out, 150 feet deep, it was wide open with birds everywhere, sea lions, and breaking tuna (well, they are tuna). We started trolling broken back rapalas through the malestrom and immediately hooked up very fiesty bonito. These were 12 to 15 lb fish in cold water and they could pull! For an hour and a half it was non stop delight on our light rods. The drags got a real workout as these guys were hot. We also caught fish on live sardines flylined ala albacore, but the birds were a pain. All in all we caught 15 or so bonito, all of which were 12 to 15 lbs, and we lost a few that seemed much larger. What a blast!
Woody kept a few, saying he likes to eat them, but I am skeptical.
What a day...
Will

Blackie and other Perch fishermen

What do you look for when perch fishing? And are there ways to forecast when you think the fishing is going to be better than other days. I would like to hear what you guys think.

Thanks, John

Fished Wednesday late 7:30start ,Psl, Jim B jr. Came along to give his boat a rest after 4 out of 5days fishing it. At Jim(& Waynes) suggestion we put out some tuna feathers just south of the red light, and put on a couple of aprox 7# bonit o and got the smallest spining rod spooled on a third, within the first hour. We had asap bled gut and ice-packed the 2,then headed out on original course for purisima. ran 18-20knots in light fog until arrival, light chop under a foot. fished 75-100 feet for limit rockfish consisting of aprox 12 gopher, 3large bolina,3small bolina,1 blue ,1yellow,3 ling cod 24.5"/26" and 18.9# bruiser. released 2short lings(slow bite, bit better late day)pulled lines at 1:30pm and headed back 10knots against close/short 2ft chop and 15knotnw wind, very wet ride!, until near harbor entrance flat calm. Cleaned fish at port and savored scraps with wasabi and soysauce, pelicans and gulls swarming cleaning station as usual. Bonito were choice translucent and not fishy. parking lot not a problem with minimal winter trafic but can imagine it might be a big problem next spring. hope to get in another day or so before closure.

The Parking At PSL is going to be different but, we'll see how it works this last two weeks of the season. If it isn't going to work we'll have to address it with the harbor dist. and see if we can do something about it. Anyway the fishings been good lots of reds and lings coming in and the bonito are still around. I'll be opening up a little earlier till the end of the season. We will be closed Thanksgiving Day.
Good fishin

apparently PSL wants us to downsize to pintos and kayaks.
I personally will have a serious problem getting around and parking with the new arrangement that has been so thoughtfully designed.

I did ask...a nine lbs. red is still a very nice fish though. We don't see those too often in the southwest 40's. The biggest one I have peronally seen down thataway was the 10.2 that Joe Romley caught off of Buchon. Next time, try to get a picture to me and I will send it in to WON.

My favorite fillet knives are Forschners. They have a variety of blades and they hold an edge very well. This is the knife that my buddy uses on longrange charter boats out of SD. I've had one for years and just sharpen it every time.

Check out the fishermans solution made by Cutco, it is the best one I've seen. My friend turned me onto one after I saw the one he had for over 25 years.

We've been doing good on the yaks, hoping for another good day.

Can anyone reccomend a good fillet knife. I want one that is ultra ultra sharp and good for flatties and cod. I recently bought two Victorinox's at the suggestion of a tackle store down south. They suck. Too long wide and go dull every time. I want a really really sharp knife that is easy to use and keep sharp. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The vermillion on the Harbor Pathfinder was larger than our bigger ones that we usually get locally. I put 9 lbs. on our jackpot sheet. On a two-day trip years ago with John Rowley a guy caught a 14 lb. vermillion. It was weighed and pictures were taken. I may have a picture of it, I'll have to look sometime. sharon

Have I got a STORY

The following was told me over the phone , by the gentelman that it happened too.
My Good buddy Ralph went out today with VIRGS on the HARBOR PATHFINDER , Sharon was the skipper and Mike was on deck, here it comes , ralph always fishes the stern as he has bad knees , he had his two rods rigged and leaning on the rail in the stern , they had left the breakwater and were heading south , Ralph decided he needed a Beer , so he went to the galley to get one , all of a sudden one of the guys runs in and says A SEAGULL just took your rod , ralph runs out to find his brand new KENCORE/SHIMANO outfit GONE , Mike and sharon turned the boat around and followed the GPS trail back , they saw a otter , and then noticed a seagull strugling on the surface , they pulled over to the thief and after some time did gaff the line that was attached VIA jig to the bird , they pulled the line up with the rod and reel intact, then brought the bird aboard , he had the jig in his feathers .
The jig was removed with no harm to the thief, and Ralph got his new outfit back , he went on to get the JP with a 11# red , much thanks to the skipper and deck hand, if you doubt this story just ask , SHARON OR MIKE .

B.A. Had a tuna steak for dinner tonight. WOW, never tasted anything that good from the store. Bill W. was with me yesterday. We took 4 for canning, We made steaks out of the center of the other 5 and left the front and back sections for smoking Sunday. We went out of the harbor about 3 miles past the red light and turned left. 140 to 180 feet and the water temp was 58 to 59. There was break there form 54. Also no signs,,no birds,, nothing. Cought us by suprise. I marked the spot on my plotter and we just ran back and forth trough them. Lots of hits almost every pass. I will talk to you Thursday night to see how you did.

STEVE
did the meat end up deep red? looks way lesstranslucent than most dark tuna?
we cut the throat, bleed into a 5gal bucket til stop kicking, zip the annus to the isthmus and pull out the guts, pack ice in cavity and chill asap. we wait til later to fillet and remove blood line. did yours come out bad?
if so canning will make it acceptable as sandwich tuna most of the time but not so good fresh or smoked.
