The boneheads are still out there , but they have slowed way down , may be on the way OUT ,
Fished yesterday 11 anglers 10 fish , no jig fish two were hooked up but lost , all were troll fish , 8 on cedar , and three on feathers.
all fish were caught out front of DIABLO and south.
Don,t know how SAL did but I would think it was slow for him also , did see ONE BRAVE YAK out there.
all fish were 8 to 14 # , the one I caught got hit by something while I was bringing it in , I felt a slack line and the fish charged the boat , I bounced him in and his tail was almost gone.
MAKO OR SEAL? anyway I got the fish he got a taste.

Good luck with the Boneheads. I know the kayak anglers are hoping you get ripped all day long. Can't make this trip, but there's a chance you may have some company.

Tincan,

we were catching them on cedar plugs and tuna feathers. I agree with B.A. they'll probably bite anything.

also could someone post the threshold (direction and height) at which the swells will break at/or outside the harbor entrance to morro bay. last saturday looked a little scarry.

Rapalas work great but they are biting everything almost. its fun and easy.
catch care is important in my opinion.
there are people brigning in 10 fish sacks on the party boat that are likely not going to like the taste.
the rapalas are saltwater "countdown magnums" or "cd"s
thety ahve numbers for size like cd14 or cd 18and come in lots of colors.
a couple of links

you can use freshwater rapalas but they will get destroyed and hooks bent if you put any pull on them.
all you need is a suitable hook with soemthing like a hoochie/skirt/squid. the 6 knoots is about right.

Tincan2,
Try hoochies (5") in any color rigged with 4/0 hooks. Bonito eat them up. You don't even need any weight. Troll them @ 6knots 100 feet back and hold on.

Is the Bonito bite still hot? Gonna try the Bonito thing this Saturday I think. After seeing all the recipies, gonna give it a whirl. Can anyone give me a quick tutorial on location and method. I heard last about 1-2 miles right off port san luis in 150ft what and troll rapalas. I mostly bottom fish so forgive the ignorance but are we talking rapalas from like wallmart that surface bounce about 100yds back? Any quick advice would be appreciated. Taking some fishing rookies and would like to show them a good time. Thanks again.

When we can the bonita in good shape (bled right away) there is not much difference with albacore when we make tuna sandwiches. We also make tuna pies real simply: canned bonita or albacore with some chopped onion, thawed or heated frozen peas and cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup. We just add a little milk to make it a creamy soup then mix it with the stuff just mentioned and put it in a ready made pie shell, top with other pie shell and bake until crust is golden, around 40 minutes at 350. You can add other ingredients to filling how you want, like carrots.

Bonita,
Cut 1" thick strips approx 4" long. Set it in the fridge overnight with one can beer, Lemon juice, Lemon pepper, garlic, Teriyaki, Worstershire Sause. I like alot of pepper. Heat BBQ HOT HOT. Lay down foil on grill, quick shot of Pam cooking spray, fish should sizzle when placed on foil. Pound a beer or two, fish should be done.

I use the same stuff for my smoking, just cut the fish 1/4" strips or thinner. 4-6 hours smoking depends on how full the smoker is.

Bonito with bacon, sounds good I'll have to try that..
Post your favorite recipes because bonito are "it" for us right now.
I would not rate bonito better than albacore "canned" in my experience but certainly not bad. how do the rest of you compare it?
It is said that skipack are only any good if canned, but Ive heard some people sahimi them too, but fresh cooked is rated below awful.
I had 1/2batch of bonito smoked come out "muddy"
and another come out nice but weather was wet and cold while running the "muddy" batch and the drying took much much longer than normal. any bonito smoking recipes you guys like? i just used " alby" process.

MAKO ? or other large toothy critter.
while trolling bonito week ago sunday we had a triple on feathers. 1 came undone quickly, heavy 50+#mono leader on tuna clone clipped close to lure end, also 14# to rapala clipped (fresh tied) . just before cutoff 1 fish felt sort of like a seal had grabbed it but we werent in seals at that time.
never saw it, but thinking your mako and his buddies could be culprit?

Yeah, the canned bonito is better than albacore. I had both this year, so I'm not just saying that because there's no albacore...smoked is pretty good too if you liked smoked fish. I'm going on Patriot's trip this weekend if I can get away from work. I think they cost 65 clams and are limited to 20 people...Yay Bonito! (ok to pronounce Bo-knee-tah)

Good job on the mako, that must have been fun. To bad he got away, they are great table fare. There's got to be more especially with everyone bleeding their fish. Saw one out there on the surface on Friday, but wasn't 100 percent if it was a mako.

Went out on a buddies 18ft Wellcraft looking for Bonito. Started trolling at the red light and within 5 minutes had our first strike. We were surprised when a 7 foot Mako came shooting out of the water. It came out of the water again about 5 minutes later(what a sight). We brought it to the boat 5 times and was able to touch it but unable to get a rope around its tail. After 45 minutes of wether or not we should gaff it the hook pulled free. We went on to catch seven bonito.

We hope to improve on the dredging, restriping the parking for better trailer parking and the hours of operation will be open earlier and closed later for longer fishing days.
Thanks again for all the support gentlemen.

...no swells, just waves.

The highlight of our day was a 33 lbs. halibut caught by Jerry Dutsch of Exeter...and getting inside the harbor.

Harrell, thanks for the report, I almost took my 5 year old out of Morro today.

I have heard some white knuckle reports of people trying to come back into the bay with the Coast Guard guiding people in.....Maybe when some of their hands quit shaking long enough and they settle down a bit they will post their storys.........something like 16 foot swells at the harbor mouth..

I have not fished out of PSL for a few years. Will the sling be usable tomorrow? Will there be too much surge at the dock?
Tides look like they will be in our favor. High tide is at 10:16 am (+5.5)and low at 6:04 pm
(-0.4).
Harrell thank you for posting the weather report.
Once we are away from the dock I don't see much issue with the long period swell.

My condolences Mike. Just think what it would have been like overnight with a 12 to 14 foot swell running. No thanks!
Let's plan a winter trip to somewhere warm and fishy.

NOT THE WAY TO END THE SEASON

Ralph and I got to virgs at 10am sharp this morning , for the final trip of the year a two day on the ADMIRAL , we get there early in order to get the prime spot on the stern ,
We did notice some monster waves breaking across the jetty, but we had a lot of time for it to lay down , after noon the line got longer as more fisherman arrived for the final fling , we saw the harbor patrol, or ranger truck go by with sirens blaring , then we saw the COAST GUARD at full speed heading out of the harbor , , this happened twice in the afternoon, found out later it was the surfers having problems with the HUGE Waves.
The boat loaded right on time and we headed out with aprox 35 fisherman aboard , well we got to the green bouy on the jetty and the waves were huge , all hands were in life jackets for the bar crossing, the tide was going out and the two 47 ft coast guard vessels were patroling the entrance , we sat there for about 10 min and the CG said you will not go out , looking at some of the faces on the boat, I think they were happy, me I think it was a good call , you dont mess with mother nature , just watching the CG boats in the opening was awesome , so we headed back to the dock to close he 2008 bottom fish season, all hands were given a full refund , and VIRGS was very accommodating for the folks that came from the valley , they were offered a bunk and dinner for the night , so thats the end , EXCEPT that the bonita are still out there and maybe just maybe monday the sea gods will let us out for a bonita trip .

Took my son out of school Monday morning for the epic Bonita bite...could hardly get 2 rods set before fish on! We had to be in by noon due to the minus tide.We had 5 doubles for the morning...fishing freshwater medium heavy Bass rods.Pulled the hooks off of a tuna feather to tease the fish up to the boat and then Cast back a fly on an 8 weight rod...what a hoot! We caught and released 40 fish....what a great day out with my son...Going again tomorrow to let my girlfriend enjoy the experience...When she gets too tired from pulling on fish, will get the fly rod back out...Happy Holidays everyone...I appreciate our Central coast fisherman that share so much information...

FOR THOSE BOATING TOMORROW:

SEA/SWELL:

This morning's 7 to 9 foot westerly (270° shallow water) swell
(with a 13-15 second period) will continue at this height and period
through this afternoon.

A 948 mb storm developed south of the Aleutians Inlands earlier
this week and has generated a very long-period swell.

Swell from this storm peaked at the SE Papa marine buoy (about 625
miles west of Eureka) early this morning at 23 feet with a 19
second period, which was higher and earlier than was forecasted on
yesterday's report.

Because these waves have such a long-period they are traveling
at a faster rate across the Pacific and will arrive earlier and at
a greater height. Even though these waves will only be 10 to 12 feet,
the most the important thing to remember is that the periods between
the waves are excessively long. This condition will significantly
increase the power of the wave and a great amount of caution should
be exercise by those venturing to the coast today and tomorrow.

This very long-period northwesterly (300° deep water) swell from
this storm will arrive along our coastline this afternoon
at 5 to 7 (with a 22+ second period), increasing to 9 to 11 feet
(with a 20-22+ second period) tonight.

This swell will further build to 10 to 12 feet (with an 18-20
second period) on Sunday, decreasing to 8 to 10 feet (with
a 16-18 second period) on Monday.

Increasing northwesterly winds along our coastline will generate
a 7 to 9 foot northwesterly (290° shallow water) sea/swell (with a
5-14 second period) on Tuesday.

A 5 to 7 foot west-northwesterly (280° deep water) sea/swell (with
a 7-20 second period) will arrive along our coastline on Wednesday,
increasing to 8 to 10 feet (with an 8-18 second period) on Thursday.
This sea/swell will become an 8 to 10 foot west-northwesterly swell
(with a 15-17 second period) on Friday.

Medium-energy swell conditions will continue through next week.

(Arriving from the southern hemisphere)

None to report.

I'm glad you got Brad out on the water. Great photo probably bigger than any fish that he has caught this year.lol The man fishes fresh water hard.

Chris thanks for clarifying I think that shows class on your part. It's easy to misunderstand people on the internet.

FRIDAY , bonito still hitting, Psl crowded for last weekend of rockfish season. even rental moorings occupied I heard!
Bite was good on bonita, so-so on rockfish, per Jimminy B Jr on his own boat via cel.
hope they stay into december and wind stays down.
reminder , PSL boats that draw more than 18"or so
low tide issues need to be watched or you will be "beached" in between surges.

OK this was my last time out. Took a few friends out of PSL to fight with the bonito. It was beautiful and the fish were insane. We trolled with salmon hootchies and we were constantly on to the fish. We caught and released 30 for the three of us. Lots of sea lions charged our fish but they never got one.lit up bone
Very tired and happy,
Will

Johnny,
When I was catching them last Sunday, I was well inside the rest of the fleet in 80-90' of water. At one point I looked over and we were even with the jetty! That is probably only 1.5-2 miles from Port Beach. They are definitely in kayak range...in fact a outrigger canoe paddled by us while we were trolling around. They would be a blast out of the yak. Troll rapalas at top paddling speed:-)
best fishes,
steve

You guys let me know if they get close enough, that would be a blast to hook one on the yak. I've seen huge Butts' come off the pier, usually the ones from the valley. Heard of a time when Salmon was easily caught off the pier too. Looking forward to experience those kinds of conditions someday.

Just got back from fishing in Panama, and the experience actually equaled or exceeded the hype.We fished out of the Panama Big Game Club which is about an hour west of the city of David, near the Panama/Costa Rica border. My buddy and I were the only guests at the lodge during the "off season",but had 4 outstanding days of fishing on a 28ft twin diesel Phoenix just like Bob Hather's boat. The crew was local but manged by Lee Campbell,a career sportfishing and tournament captain from the east coast....Although Lee kept apologizing for the slow fishing and small tuna,we managed to catch over 50 dorado from #40-75lbs,8 tuna in the #80-100lb class,a bunch of Mullett Snapper (like pargo on Meth)in the #40-60lb class,a handful of #50lb class roosterfish, and dozens of misc. jacks, snappers, groupers and fish no one could identify...The 2 high points for me were a couple jumbo dorado (over #50lbs) on a #12wt flyrod, and a #60+ lb tuna on a Yozuri surface popper caught on a spinning reel with #80lb spectra....I would recommend this trip to anyone looking for an extraordinary fishing adventure....Jan.-May are supposedly the "good months" for fishing...They encourage catch and release on all species, but we kept a handful of fish each day for the lodge and the local villiage...I will forward some photos to Bob hater, who will hopefully have better luck posting them than I did.....happy Thanksgiving to all....Jeff

Gonna load up on the two day for the last weekend to fill the rest of my freezer space, then I guess its lights out, except for the COMM fishing.

CHRIS,
Salty Doc hardly needs anyone to come to his rescue, I think he explained his situation quite well and was undoubtedly quite modest about the hours he spends in pursuit of fish.

As you eventually learn and figure out who you just "popped off" on, you'll soon realize the error of your ways.
