IN GENERAL: Fast-paced action from the Thetis Bank down toward Santa Maria Bay continues its red hot pace. Lots of fish in the teasers and plenty of double digit counts reported by the few boats in the area. Wahoo also showing up in the pattern enough to play havoc with the teasers. Plenty of action for estero (estuary) aficionados with plenty of corvina hitting everything from poppers to sub-surface flies. A few snook hooked, but lost. Rounding out the species list were pompano, jacks and lots of cabrilla to keep Pudge Kleinkauf's group smiling and raring to go in the morning. Water Temperature 67°-79° Air Temperature 60°- 82° Humidity 35% Wind WSW 11 mph Conditions Haze Visibility 5 miles Sunrise 6:31 a.m. MST Sunset 5:49 p.m. MST Oct. 31 First Quarter Nov.8 Full Nov. 16 Last Quarter Nov 23 New YELLOWTAIL - Still around. CORVINA - Pop, Pop, Slam. What a kick SNOOK - They are biting, we are just not catching. HALIBUT - Chartreuse Clousers and sandy beach, slow retrieve along the bottom equals action. SIERRA - Everyone forgot to look. |

IN GENERAL: From two to 10 miles outside the entrada all the way up to the Thetis Bank, football-size tuna are thick. Wahoo at the shark buoys 240° - 270° 14 miles out mixed in with dorado. Zack Thomas, Pacific Coast Sportfishing editor, reported the marlin at Thetis were unbelievably thick. Several other yachts transiting to Cabo also reported excellent fishing from above the Thetis to seven miles off of the anchorage at Santa Maria Bay. Inside the bay, the same yachts were complaining about how tough the mackerel fishing was. Esteros yielded good leopard grouper catches to go along with the continued corvina bite. The old standby spotted bay bass were there for the taking. I am headed there next week to fish with Anchorage guide Pudge Kleinkauf and her group for four days, so stay tuned. She always comes up a winner. Water Temperature 67°-79° Air Temperature 69°- 82° Humidity 81% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:28 a.m. MST Sunset 6:05 p.m. MST Oct 25 New Oct. 31 First Quarter Nov.8 Full Nov. 16 Last Quarter YELLOWTAIL - Entrada and entrance to Santa Maria Bay pretty good. CORVINA - Want a rush? Try a popper. SNOOK - We are ready, they're not. HALIBUT - Chartreuse Clousers and sandy beach, slow retrieve along the bottom equals action. SIERRA - Slow this week or not noticed because of everything else going on. |

IN GENERAL: One for the money, two for the show, the Thetis Bank pileup begins. One local boat reported multiple marlin strikes and releases as well as wahoo and dorado. Back closer to the entrada on a 240„a heading 17-20 miles, among the shark buoys, one boat reported triples on the wahoo and dorado. At the entrada, yellowtail were on the chew and even biting the fly. Back at Belcher¡¦s there was a pretty good halibut bite (I know halibut, marlin, wahoo and dorado in the same report is pretty weird.) The esteros seemed to have awakened as well with corvina, pompano and mucho bay bass. Water Temperature 67¢X-79¢X Air Temperature 65¢X- 82¢X Humidity 98% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:25 a.m. MST Sunset 5:58 p.m. MST Oct. 18 Last Quarter Oct 25 New Oct. 31 First Quarter Nov.8 Full YELLOWTAIL ¡V Baja Deep Diver, slow retrieve, down deep. CORVINA ¡V Still the most common catch in the esteros. SNOOK ¡V A few smaller ones. HALIBUT - Chartreuse Clousers and sandy beach, slow retrieve along the bottom equals action. SIERRA ¡V Slow this week or not noticed because of everything else going on. |

IN GENERAL: After all the recent Chubasco smack downs, let the sun shine in! That was the tune heard most often this week. Jess Telles, Visalia, Calif. (in the San Joaquin Valley) had a big smile on his face as he slid into a tuna stop in front of Cabo Pulmo that wouldn’t quit. By the time the scales settled he had racked up an impressive even dozen mixed yellowfin and bonito on the cast. Our See Thru Deceivers did the trick for him. The next day, he opted for a shot at billfish and wasn’t disappointed. Well, maybe a little. He connected twice, but both time the fly came out before he could bring them to the boat. I’ll bet he will be back soon to even that score. The arroyos continue to flow, but are passable. AIR & SEA - Water temperature 81°-86° Air temperature 72° - 91° Humidity about 78% Wind WNW at 3 mph Conditions Cloudy (FEW) : 20000 ft Visibility 15 miles Sunrise 6:16 a.m. MST Sunset 5:52 p.m. MST Oct. 18 Last Quarter Oct 25 New Oct. 31 First Quarter Nov.8 Full o OFFSHORE: A few blues, stripers and sails providing the best action. Few tuna to be found. o INSHORE: Still pretty dirty water with a few jacks and roosters beginning to show again. o BEACH: After all the storms it is very hard to even get around. Lots of flowing arroyos to deal with. Best bet is to fish the edges. BILLFISH – A few blues and stripers to go along with a good sailfish bite. YELLOWFIN TUNA – Best action was at Cabo Pulmo. DORADO – Better than it’s been, but not what we had hoped it would be by now. ROOSTERFISH – Bubba among the missing, small ones are at the edges of the arroyos. JACK CREVALLE – A few smaller ones in front of Punta Colorada. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK – Cabo Pulmo holding a few. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Slow. SIERRA – A few here and there. |

IN GENERAL: The threat of Nora managed to keep most of the boats inside the bay for most of the week. The threat’s gone just in time as a few trailer boats began to arrive for Fall offshore pileup. Won't be long before the Southern California transiting yachts will begin to arrive. Based on the reports so far, it should be a good season. Back up in the esteros the action has been spotty since few boats have been fishing this week. A few reports of plenty of bait being seen near Devil's Curve. We still have a few slots opened for our Magdalena Bay Estero Sampler call Yvonne for more information 800 919 2252. http://www.bajafly.com/Pudgemag03/ Water Temperature 60°-78° Air Temperature 68°- 82° Humidity 59% Wind NW at 2 mph Conditions Haze Visibility 5 miles Sunrise 6:22 a.m. MST Sunset 6:05 p.m. MST Oct.10 Full Oct. 18 Last Quarter Oct. 25 New Oct. 31 First Quarter YELLOWTAIL - Last report had them under the bird schools outside the entrada. CORVINA - Both the pier and bridge produced good catches. SNOOK - They are here, just need a few anglers. HALIBUT - Still up in the shallows at the sandy beaches. SIERRA - Also at the pier. |

Thurs., Oct. 02, 2003 Report covers the period Sat.-Thurs. (9/27 - 10/02) IN GENERAL: The buzz continues to be the offshore action, which seems to be improving daily. Dorado, more striped marlin every day and reports of tuna farther out sound enticing. Most of the action is on a 240 - 270° heading from the entrada beginning at about 7 miles and out as far as 25. At the entrada, bird schools point the way for both the yellowtail and skipjack feeding on the surface. As the surface temperatures continue to climb it should only get better. Water Temperature 60°-78° Air Temperature 70°- 88° Humidity 96% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:19 a.m. MST Sunset 6:12 p.m. MST Oct. 2 First Quarter Oct.10 Full Oct. 18 Last Quarter Oct. 25 New YELLOWTAIL - Look for the birds at the entrada. CORVINA - The most consistent species for the entire year. . SNOOK - Not much pressure, but they are there. HALIBUT - Chartreuse Clousers and sandy beach, slow retrieve along the bottom equals action. SIERRA - Watch for the birds inside the bay.

IN GENERAL: Sounds like most of the activity involved either fishing for shrimp or cleaning up in the aftermath of Hurricane Marty. Shrimp trawlers have shown up from the mainland and are scooping up the tasty crustaceans on the outside of Santa Maria Island. Yellowtail with a few white seabass are under the bird schools in the same area. The pinnacles in the middle of the entrance to Santa Maria Bay are holding a few grouper and if you are lucky, an occasional yellowtail. Again this week little action to report up in the esteros because of a lack of anglers, not fish. Water Temperature 69°-76° Air Temperature 71°-82° Humidity 90% Wind NW at 2 mph Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 7:17 a.m. MDST Sunset 7:17 p.m. MDST Oct. 2 First Quarter Oct.10 Full Oct. 18 Last Quarter Oct. 25 New YELLOWTAIL - Bird schools or pinnacles. CORVINA - Pretty good early morning bite at the pier and bridge. SNOOK - Got to target to find them. HALIBUT - Most sandy beaches holding a few. SIERRA - Mixed in with the corvina. |

IN GENERAL: Fishing is great! That’s the answer I heard when I made my Tues. night call to pangero Enrique in Puerto San Carlos. What about Marty? I asked. “We had lots of rain and wind,” Enrique continued, “but Sunday we caught yellowtail, grouper and halibut at the entrada.” There were lots of dorado at the shark buoys about 7 miles out on a 240° heading from the entrada, out a bit further were lots of jumping marlin and 10 miles further were schools of tuna. Back in the bay, the focus continued on commercial fishing for shrimp. There was some flooding and damage at Lopez Mateos and Ciudad Constitucion. Water Temperature 69°-76° Air Temperature 71°-85° Humidity 92% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 7:14 a.m. MDST Sunset 7:25 p.m. MDST Sept. 25 New Oct. 2 First Quarter Oct.10 Full Oct. 18 Last Quarter YELLOWTAIL – Under the bird schools at the entrada CORVINA - Plenty to play with - either at Devil's Curve or near the pier. SNOOK - Must be hiding from Marty. HALIBUT - Continuing action for those who are interested. Plenty on the south side of Belchers in skinny water. SIERRA - A few under the bird schools. |

IN GENERAL: Six miles = dorado, 10 miles = stripers, and further some yellowfin tuna. The pinnacles south of the entrada continue to yield grouper and even an occasional yellowtail. With light pressure (remember, the shrimp season is now open) Devil’s Curve came alive with a few smaller snook, pargo and even the corvina joined in. If it was chartreuse it got bit. Water Temperature 69°-76° Air Temperature 71°-90° Humidity 96% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 7:11 a.m. MDST Sunset 7:33 p.m. MDST Sept. 18 Last Quarter Sept. 25 New Oct. 2 First Quarter Oct.10 Full YELLOWTAIL - Keep hearing rumors of a fair whack at Thetis Bank. CORVINA - Began to heat up at Devil’s Curve or closer to San Carlos at the bridge. SNOOK - A few smaller ones; where’s Bubba? HALIBUT - Continuing action for those that are interested. Plenty on the south side of Belchers in skinny water. SIERRA - A few under the bird schools. |

Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (9/10 - 9/12) IN GENERAL: You can tell it is Sept. and shrimp season is open in Magdalena Bay. All the locals want to tell me about shrimping. There are very few doing real fishing, but here goes. Want dorado? As they say, Go West, about six to eight miles should do. If you start seeing some jumping marlin, you have probably gone too far. Plenty of tuna for sashimi to be had closer to the Thetis Bank as well as a few yellows on the pinnacles. Speaking of pinnacles, there is one about a mile south of the entrada that has been producing some nice-sized broomtail grouper if you get deep enough. Back up in the esteros, it must be good because there was no pressure from the locals. Last week, a school of yellows showed up – are you ready for this? – at the pier! It was wide open for a short time while creating quite a buzz in sleepy San Carlos. Water Temperature 69°-76° Air Temperature 71°-90° Humidity 96% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 7:11 a.m. MDST Sunset 7:33 p.m. MDST Sept. 18 Last Quarter Sept. 25 New Oct. 2 First Quarter Oct.10 Full YELLOWTAIL - Take your pick either the entrada or Thetis Bank. CORVINA - Either the bridge or pier is a good bet. SNOOK - Quiet. HALIBUT - Continuing action for those that are interested. Plenty on the south side of Belchers in skinny water. SIERRA - A few under the bird schools. |

Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (8/9 - 8/12) IN GENERAL: Probably one of the coolest places to be in Baja right now both from a weather and a fishing perspective. Yellows continue to snap at the entrada. Estero plunking is providing great sport with a mixed bag including snook, leopard grouper, pargo and a few pompano rising to the challenge which is usually a chartreuse Baja Deep Diver that lands in their face. Be sure to try the bridge at the entrance to town, Los Barriles estero (estuary) and Devil’s Curve. For best results, spread out, explore and mix well. Subject: Look for the Secrets
Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (5/23-5/27)
IN GENERAL: Beginning to feel more like summer in the bay. Outside is still cold water and high seas. While the stock spots are producing fair catches, this is the time of year to devote some of your time to exploring. With over 130 miles of bay and esteros, who knows what secret spot you might stumble into. Just imagine, you may be the first person to introduce a fly to a spot. What a cool thought.

YELLOWTAIL - Watch for bird schools at the entrada on around to Santa Maria Bay entrada.
CORVINA - Strong comeback this week with white and silver flies getting their attention.
SNOOK - Believe it or not, dredging the center of the channels with a See Thru Deceiver has been very effective recently.
HALIBUT - We even caught a few up in the esteros.

Subject: Commercial Nets Nail Snook
Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (5/21-5/23)
IN GENERAL: Sounds like the commercial fisherman are scooping ‘em up in the surf on the east side of Santa Maria Bay reportedly some snook to 50-pounds. What a shame! Those fish are way too valuable a resource to catch only once, additionally, they are the brood stock. Devil's Curve produced good catches of corvina and a few smaller snook.

Subject: And the Snook Came Out to Play
Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (5/17-20)
IN GENERAL: After two days of so-so fishing, the California DeKaye group got a glimpse of what Magdalena Bay is all about. Alex Lidow, Hermosa Beach, landed his largest snook ever. Fortunately, he hooked it a 100-yards from the mangroves and managed to keep it from getting back up in the roots on the two runs that went deep into the backing. The monster took a See Thru Deceiver with an olive back and didn't want to return it. After a 20-minute epic battle, Alex brought it close enough to get a net under it. Several quick photos later it was back in the greenish waters of Magdalena Bay. Our pangero, Enrique, swore that it was every bit of 30-pounds and believe me, everybody was smiling and high-fiving as if they had won the Indy 500. Later the same day Charles Kittrell, Carmel, caught a leopard grouper on a flash Clouser that demonstrated what a bad attitude they have. That third day made believers out the group and they are already planning their next Baja Adventure in Magdalena Bay.

Subject: Looking and Snooking
Report covers the period Wed.-Fri., (5/14-5/16)
IN GENERAL: (Note: Sorry, report is limited because of communications problems and a down e-mail server.) We’re fishing the esteros with a group from Northern California, Chuck Dekay, his son Deke, Alex Lido and Charles Kittrell. We’ve had a few shots at the elusive snook, but so far nobody has hung one. Spotted bay bass continue to brighten our days along with an occasional pompano, small jack and corvina. Mornings continue to be a tad foggy, but when the sun breaks through it looks like a French impressionist painting.

YELLOWTAIL – Brave the early morning fog and the chop on the way home and head for the Thetis Bank.
CORVINA - Fair with a few being taken on the surface with poppers or on chartreuse Clousers.
SNOOK – We haven’t caught any, but we’ve heard of some in the five-pound class.
HALIBUT – Head for Punta Belcher and bounce a chartreuse Clouser on a sandy bottom.

Subject: A Nice Mixed Bag
Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (5/9-5/13)
IN GENERAL: Beginning with Devil’s Curve and working back down to Puerto San Carlos produced a mixed bag yesterday (5/12) with a few small snook, jacks, pompano, corvina and a couple of grouper providing enough action to keep the clients busy. I will be in San Carlos later today to meet four clients that will be fishing for the next three days. This is my first visit since Jan. and I can't wait. We will be doing some exploring in some rumored hot spots and I will fill you in on Sat.

CORVINA - Fair with a few being taken on the surface with poppers.
SNOOK - The ones caught recently have been in the five-pound class.

IN GENERAL: Cold and windy is beginning to sound like a litany. Devil’s Curve was slow this week, but back in Los Barriles estero (my personal favorite) pompano bit with a vengeance and one snook was caught that was a few pounds short of 20. As soon as it warms up a bit it should get good quick.

Subject: Serious Snook Reported
Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (4/26-4/29)
IN GENERAL: Rumors abound of some serious snook action down Puerto Chale way. For the last month I have been hearing stories of Grande Snook being caught. One monster that was verified weighed 37 pounds. Nobody is talking specifics, so I think I will go check out myself in a week or two. If you can get there, Thetis Bank has had a fair yellowtail snap with an occasional dorado showing up. The esteros around Puerto San Carlos have not been producing much to talk about this week, which can be attributed to few anglers trying.

YELLOWTAIL - Thetis Bank is a long way to go for a yellowtail, but if that is your desire go for it!
CORVINA - Plenty around, both surface poppers and Baja Deep Divers are working well.
SNOOK - Now if I could get one of these guys to eat the popper I would be stoked.

Subject: Cold and Bumpy
Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (4/19-4/22)
IN GENERAL: Cold and windy are not my favorite words to begin a report, but that's the fact. The good news is May is coming and it will warm up. In re-reading what I just wrote, I realized that our “cold and windy” might be your warm and balmy, so on with the report: Grande halibut again this week; and that is a relative term as well but, a 15-pound halibut in Baja is large. Offshore, the seas were rough and the locals stayed close to home. Up in the esteros there were a few corvina, grouper and maybe a snook if you worked hard.

Subject: Lumpy, Bumpy Ocean Makes Things Tough
Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (4/16-4/18)
IN GENERAL: Sounds like plenty of dorado are under many of the shark buoys on a 240° line extending out 35-miles. Also, schools of yellowtail up on Thetis with a few dorado mixed in. The problem is the Pacific has been pretty grumpy for the past few weeks and makes it pretty tough to get out where the fish are. Back at the entrada, the water is full of langostia and has essentially shut off the bite. The best bet is in the esteros with a fair bite for corvina, grouper and a few snook. Big tides and strong currents should subside next week making it even better.

Sat., April 19, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (4/16-4/18)
IN GENERAL: Even though the 80º blue water has moved out a bit, and despite the full moon, the fishing has been very good. A lot of tuna are being caught with most of them in the 30- to 35-pound class. Blaine Burnette of Bakersfield, Calif., fishing with Luis on the panga “Gringo Loco,” scored the biggest yellowfin with an estimated 230-pounder. The two speed Shimano 30 reel and 760 Calstar rod helped to make it a catchable fish, despite the 5-1/2 hour battle on 60-pound Izoreline. Bruce Marshal and 11 year old son Nick, from Aliso Viejo, Calif., fished with Santiago on the panga “Gitana.” They released two sailfish and took 8 tuna in the 25- to 35-pound class. Bruce told me it was so wide open, they could have taken another 10 tuna if they had stayed a little longer, but his son kind of “wore out.” (At least that is the excuse he gave me. I kind of think Bruce was a little worn out also.) One day Captain Ruben on the “Yellowfin” did not have a client, so he and a couple of friends went out for their own sport, and to possibly find the big tuna. They ended with 12 yellowfin from 35- to 60-pounds. Adolpho on the panga “Dos Hermanos,” fishing with a client from France, told me the roosterfish action is fantastic. At one point they got into a school of roosters busting a ball of bait. They were all huge fish and his client managed to catch and release three fish out of the school before they broke up. The roosters were all in the 40-pound class.

IN GENERAL: The fishing would still have to be considered on the slow side, but when the boats get a fish, it is going to be a beaut. Inshore, we have a very large influx of mackerel and black skipjack tuna. The captains are trolling a small hootchie to get a few of these and immediately bridling them on a large hook to be used as a slow troll live bait.
The smaller mackerel are ideal bait for a large tuna, marlin, sailfish, or large dorado. Several boats each day are getting hookups on a blue marlin, 25- to 35-pound dorado, or 100- to 250-pound tuna. The interesting thing about it is that when the boats are trolling 7- to 10-miles offshore, they have run past the fish. Most of the fish are being taken in the vicinity of the bait schools and are only 1 to 3 miles out. All the fish are being taken on blind strikes and even the tuna are not showing themselves.
A few of the captains, like Santiago on the panga “Gitana,” have chosen to not go around in circles all day only a mile or two off the beach and have been running 45 miles to the 80º water. He has been consistently getting 1 or 2 sailfish and at least one tuna in the 100-pound class every day this week.
Besides the skipjack, there are also a few sierra, chulas and jack crevalle being taken inshore.

Subject: Snook in the Mangroves
IN GENERAL: Zack Thomas, The SD Log’s “Fishrap” editor, called me about fishing in Magdalena Bay a few weeks ago. I set him up with our Numero Uno guide Enrique Soto and sure enough he caught a 12 kilo snook at one of our secret spots on Tues. (3/11) I can't wait to see the photos. That wasn't all he caught. Palometa amarillo, corvina and halibut rounded out the day’s catch. That was so easy, I understand he is headed out to the entrada to see if he can put the hurt on some of the quality grouper that have been biting this week. Who knows, with his luck he may find a few yellowtail as well.

IN GENERAL: The halibut bite continues out on the north side of Punta Belcher. Plenty of spotted bay bass strung out along the rock structure from Punta Belcher to the entrada. Up at Devil’s Curve the jacks went wild this week and mixed in were a few snapper and grouper. The corvina has also reappeared after a couple of week's absence. The dorado found earlier in the week at the entrada seem to have moved a little further out.

Subject: Decisions, Decisions
IN GENERAL: Up in the esteros toward Lopez Mateos, the jacks broke wide open with double digit scores being common. Added to that were a few nice-sized corvina to fill in the gaps and even two nice sized pargo. Out at Punta Belcher, spotted bay bass dominated the catch with some grandes up to three pounds. The Magdalena Bay version of the giant halibut bite continued this week with one 10-kilo critter being reported on the north side of Punta Belcher. If that’s not enough, a large school of dorado was spotted less than a quarter of a mile outside the entrada.

Subject: March Madness Begins
IN GENERAL: Most of the action continued to be out near the entrada. Sierra, barracuda and of course plenty of spotted bay bass. There are a few grouper to be had up to 10 pounds. Back up in the esteros, the corvina came back with a vengeance with good counts for everyone. Not too many snook, but there were a few found in the five to seven pound range. Whale watching has continued to improve as well.

Subject: Try the Entrada
IN GENERAL: The best action has been at the entrada or at least that is where the fleet is spending most of its time. Cloudy, windy conditions failed to discourage our eager clients and they weren't disappointed with plenty of yellowtail, barracuda, spotted bay bass and an occasional leopard grouper to play hide the fly with. Up in the esteros the corvina and small jacks provided a fast pace the made the day seem too short.

Subject: Bay Bass by the Ton
IN GENERAL: More and more whales arriving at the entrada every day and they should begin to move into the bay. There has been a fair yellowtail bite a mile or so outside the entrada with a few fish reaching the mid-teens. All the rock structure on Magdalena Island from the entrada to Belchers is holding tonnage of spotted bay bass with an occasional leopard grouper to keep it interesting. At Belcher, there has been a consistent halibut bite in shallow water and on the North side of the point the sierra have been showing early morning.

CORVINA – Well, it was great for the last two months, but is beginning to slow down.
SNOOK - Only an occasional one. Next month should be better with the lessening tides. IGFA has created a new category for Pacific snook, so there could be a few world records in Magdalena Bay's future and maybe yours.
HALIBUT - Usually the sandy beaches are best, but we have been getting a few up in the esteros.

Catches consisted mostly of corvina, palometa, pompano as well as the ever-present spotted bay bass. While fog hampered the pangas getting out in the mornings, it was worth the effort.

Subject: Waiting for the Whales
IN GENERAL: The weather is probably the best in Baja right now. The fog we had earlier this week has dissipated. It is sunny and no wind and believe me there aren't many places in Baja that can say that. Corvina are the best bet and there are plenty of cabrilla to fill in the slow spots. Snook are around and when the current lessens a little it should be pretty good fishing. Still slim pickings for the whales, but the count went up 100% with the number doubling to two in the bay this week.

Subject: Oh, Those Hard-to-Find Snook
IN GENERAL: Our trip is over and everyone had a ball! Ben Mintz, of Chatsworth, Calif., caught everything from cabrilla to corvina ultimately racking up about a half-dozen species. However, he and the rest of the group got a lesson in how elusive snook could be. Don Sloan, Borrego, Calif., my old fishing partner, was the corvina champ for the three days and also managed to farm a few quality snook. Paul Weaver, Carlsbad, Calif., owner of Farewell Harbour Resort in British Columbia, joined us for his first trip to Magdalena Bay and found out that his 7-weight was just a tad light for the critters he encountered. We had perfect weather except for some fog in the mornings and that was not a problem with my trusty GPS. All in all, everyone had a great time and we are planning another trip for late Feb.

IN GENERAL: Judging by the cooler water beginning to flow into Magdalena Bay’s offshore areas, it may be that the fat lady has sung and we will have to wait until next Fall. Subject: Winding Up 2002
IN GENERAL: I am back in California and the 2002 Flyrod Marlin 101 Series is history. The weather was about the best we have ever had with calm seas and light breezes until Wed. (12/11), final day. Plenty of dorado, wahoo and yellowfin tuna, but the marlin fishing was slow at best with only one or two a day showing during the first five days. Finally, on the last afternoon, we found enough to make the trip interesting with 10 events in rapid succession beginning at noon. Feeders and tailers contributed to the excitement. We had six shots, four takes and hooked two. We all hated to begin the slide back to the anchorage and ended up not getting back until well after dark.
Inside Magdalena Bay, the fishing continued to produce good catches of corvina, grouper and a few snook.

Subject: End of the season
IN GENERAL: (Via Satellite Phone from near the Thetis Bank). We’re at the end of our final Marlin 101 trip for 2002 and we must candidly admit to seeing few fish this time. Doug Mercer, from East Hampton, NY, got an IGFA-legal striped marlin on 20-pound test on Mon. (12/9). All-in-all, we raised four marlin, saw lots of birds and bait and lots of dorado, tuna and wahoo, but the billfish have been few. The weather has been very, very nice with calm seas.
Inside Magdalena Bay, our panga skipper Enrique reports corvina, pompano and lots of spotted sea bass in the mangroves with yellowtail and dorado in the entrada. Subject: Marlin Dead Ahead
IN GENERAL: (Via Satellite Phone from near the Thetis Bank). We’re on our second day of the final Marlin 101 trip of the 2002 season. The weather is beautiful, sea is flat and there’s little wind to speak of. Yesterday (12/6) we ran all day heading for the fishing grounds. We saw a great deal of sea life as the annual whale migration has begun in earnest; we had lots of dorado and raised one marlin. We are currently heading for the Thetis Bank and tomorrow will be our first full day of fishing. We should have a better report on Wed.
Inside Magdalena Bay they’re experiencing the lowest tide of the year. Weather is beautiful and warm. Because of the abnormally low tide, clamming is spectacular! On the other hand, few boats and pangas are fishing. Those that are going out are nailing pompano, corvina and grouper up near Devil’s Curve.
I will be going down for our first mangrove trip of 2003, Jan. 3-7. There’s still time if you want to join me for a shot at the snook as well as other critters, call Yvonne at 800 919 2252 or visit http://www.bajafly.com/magjantrip.htm

Subject: It Gets Tougher
IN GENERAL: Reports were sketchy this week. Outside the pinnacles dorado and tuna were found feeding on schools of sardines with few marlin mixed in. Above the Thetis a few miles there was a few marlin found, but not exactly a bonanza. I will begin the final 2002 Flyrod Marlin 101 trip tomorrow (12/5) and will be calling in updates from the boat, so stay tuned. Inshore up in the mangroves the fly-rodders put the hurt on snook to 20 pounds using a Greenie (see the recipe at) http://www.bajafly.com/images/greenie.jpg Also, pompano, corvina and grouper up near Devil’s Curve.

IN GENERAL: Both zones are producing good catches offshore. Up toward the Thetis Bank, look for the bird schools crashing on the sardines. Not only are the marlin there, but also the dorado and wahoo are mixed in. They’re also down toward Punta Tasco down toward the Potato Bank or outside the Pinnacle.
We are down to the wire and still have two rods available on the Dec. 5-13 Marlin 101 trip. You still have time to make it and I am sure it will be worth your while. Subject: Marlin Sizzle
IN GENERAL: This week the zone moved further to the North near and around the Thetis Bank. Striped marlin continued to bite with a vengeance with most boats reporting releases in the double digits. Add to that the continued showing of dorado, tuna and wahoo and you come up with some tired anglers at the end of the day.

Finally, there are some quality yellowtail at the entrada, with several fish caught in the 20 pound class. This is deep water stuff and you need to use a shooting head together with a heavy fly like a Baja Deep Diver. http://www.bajafly.com/baja_deepdiver.htm Up in the mangroves, the currents were strong and made fishing tough. Subject: Marlin Mania
IN GENERAL: Here’s the latest Marlin 101 report card – Flocks of diving birds are everywhere. We’re seeing spectacular green flashes as the fish have moved outside to the Southwest from Tosca. This area is as good, if not better than where they fished the first couple of days.
Our guests had 31 “events” Thurs. (11/7) (an event is when the fish is enticed into following the teasers), when they hooked 12 and caught 4. Yesterday they had 22 events, hooked 7 and caught 3. Total for the trip: 89 events, 20 hooked and 12 caught by the 3 anglers. They were fly-fishing I.G.F.A. 20# test. Anglers are Joseph Blubaugh, Salem Ore.; Jim Gill, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Nick Smith, Lake Park, Fla.
Weather has been very nice up until Fri., with some large swells late afternoon.

IN GENERAL: Nick Smith, Lake Park, Fla. and friends, Jim Gill and Joseph Blubaugh began their Marlin 101 trip yesterday morning when they departed our overnight anchorage headed for Tosco, below Pinnacle Rock. They arrived at noon and raised 17 fish, got 3 to grab a fly, landed 1 and lost 2. It was beautiful weather in the morning, a little windy in the afternoon. It was a great way to start the trip.
Little to report inshore and in the mangroves. The high tide has given the snook plenty of room to hide in the mangroves. We should have a better, more current fix on things by Sat. It has been warm, with no wind until after 4 or 5 in the afternoon.

Subject: It is looking good
IN GENERAL: Our "go-around" trip, bringing an offshore cruiser from La Paz all the way down the Sea of Cortez to Cabo San Lucas, then turning right and coming up the Pacific side to Magdalena Bay in preparation for our annual Marlin 101 series beginning next Fri., is history. It was a great adventure. The group from Montana got to see a lot of Baja from a new perspective. We anchored each night at a different anchorage and fished into the night and then all day as we made our way to Magdalena Bay. They caught everything from marlin to trumpet fish – more than 20 different species by my count. Then, to top it off, they had the opportunity to snorkel and photograph a couple of dorado we brought to the boat. All-in-all it was a memorable experience for all of us.
Now on to the important stuff. With many rumors indicating everything from wide open to terrible fishing off of Magdalena, I was anxious to see what the conditions were for myself. What I found was fishing that lives up to the Magdalena Bay reputation. We arrived at our first spot below Tosca at 11:30 and by 2:30 had caught a dozen dorado, three wahoo and had two marlin strikes. Continuing up the line toward the entrada, we found our first bird flock with large schools of sardines being chased by marlin and tuna in less than a half-hour. Later, on the way in, I spoke with Punky Langston, a fellow Tuna Club Member who was taking his boat the Double Hookup home from La Paz. He hooked 12 marlin and landed seven in an entirely different area than we had been fishing. Suffice to say I imagine this may be one of those Mag Bay years that has made it famous.

We departed LaPaz last Wed. and almost immediately began seeing (and catching!) fish. We’ve had calm seas and good traveling weather. So far, we have caught striped marlin, sailfish, wahoo and tuna during the day. Fishing at dusk on the anchorages has been excellent with our flyrods accounting for pargo, cabrillo, pompano, jacks and roosters.

IN GENERAL: I can’t believe it’s time, but we are on our way to Magdalena Bay on the go-around trip. From all the reports, we should find the bigger tuna between Las Arenas and Las Frailes and the blues just around the corner from Cabo. Should be interesting, since we will be going right through the Bisbee Tournament fleet on our second or third day. Reports about the offshore at Magdalena Bay continue to be encouraging and I will probably run all night to get there. Most of the marlin reported are closer to Cabo San Lazaro than on the Thetis. Still, the dorado thing going on at the entrada as well. Up in the esteros the snook continued to bite with a few caught in the 10-pound range.

IN GENERAL: Light pressure this week up in the esteros with only a few trips. The average catch was a couple of snook to 10 pounds, pargo, grouper and a few small corvina. Offshore, the dorado seemed to have taken up residence for the summer and the shark fisherman have been seeing a few marlin. This is basically on a heading of 210-240, 16-18 miles out from the entrada.

Subject: Hot and Hot
IN GENERAL: The good news is the Thetis Bank is holding a few yellows, the bad news is the water is off-color and there isn't anything else going on there. Back down the hill a little, say 210-230° degrees, 18-22 miles, there are a few tuna and marlin being seen. Back inside of that heading 13-18 miles there are reports of a fair showing of dorado. Up in the esteros we had clients that caught four snook, corvina, a couple of grouper and one pargo. Even though one of the snook was in the 15-pound class, they opted to head out to the entrada the next day. There they found a couple firecracker yellowtail and small grouper and that was it. Near the rocks the spotted bay bass action was almost non-stop.
AIR & SEA: Hot with little wind. Air Temperature 69 - 80 Water Temperature 69 - 76
YELLOWTAIL - Close to the bottom and smaller fish says it all.
CORVINA - A few smaller ones at the Power Plant, bridge and near the pier.
SNOOK - Deeper holes along the main channel will be your best bet.
HALIBUT - Any sandy beach that doesn’t have any nets will probably yield a few.
SIERRA - Slow, but Punta Belcher is the best bet.

Subject: Three Good Reports
IN GENERAL: Wow! Three good reports in a row. Out in the Pacific, the stripers, dorado and tuna are beginning to put on a good show and according to Brian Freitag, of Mag Bay Tours, the white seabass are biting out in front of Santa Maria Bay. Back in the esteros, Enrique Soto reports a continued up-tick in the fishing for all species in a number of different spots. One of the better ones is Devil’s Curve with some better quality snook in the mid-teens being caught on Baja Deep Divers in chartreuse.
AIR & SEA: Sunny and hot with light afternoon breezes. Air Temperature 70 - 80 Water Temperature 69 - 82
YELLOWTAIL - You are going to get down in the water column so use a Baja Deep Diver and 300 grain shooting head.
CORVINA - Not very big but aggressive on a Clouser either chartreuse or olive.
SNOOK - Look for the deep holes along the main channels and fish the edges, letting your fly sweep out into the channel.
HALIBUT - Too much other stuff going on, but there are plenty of smaller ones near the sandy beach across from San Carlos. Try a slowly retrieved chartreuse Clouser.
SIERRA - Pretty slim pickings.

IN GENERAL: Enrique Soto reported good action in several areas inside the bay that included snook, leopard grouper, corvina, pompano, and spotted bay bass. The good news was the bite was spread out and not just in one spot. Maybe things are beginning to turn on. On the outside on a 210 heading 23 to 28 miles out there have been reports of dorado and the first of the marlin are moving into the area.
AIR & SEA: Sunny and hot with light afternoon breezes. Air Temperature 69 - 82 Water Temperature 69 - 82
YELLOWTAIL - Everything is down deep so use Baja Deep Diver and 300 grain shooting head.
CORVINA - A fast two handed retrieve with small Clousers yielding good results.
SNOOK - Look for the deep holes along the main channels and fish deep in the water column.

Subject: Gillnets are Killing the Resource
IN GENERAL: The fishing inside the bay can only be described as tough. I guess it shouldn't surprise anyone since almost any of the stock spots you go to have fences of gillnets. And the sardina reduction fleet is working around the clock to catch every last sardine. Whatever gets through all the gillnets won't have anything to eat anyway. This could be one of the most pristine and productive bays in Baja if the Mexican government would wake up and smell the coffee.

Subject: Hurricanes Blow By
IN GENERAL: On the outside, the seas were heavy with some 12 to 15 foot swells reported from the two hurricanes that passed below Cabo this week. Down below Tasco to above the entrada some 83-degree water was found. Tuna seiners were working the area wrapping large schools of yellowfin tuna to 40 pounds. The entrance to Santa Maria bay produced some yellowtail under the flocks of birds. Inside the bay, there’s still good halibut fishing near the any sandy beach. Up in the esteros, there has been a steady pick on corvina, grouper and a few snook to 10 pounds.
AIR & SEA: Partly cloudy with some breeze in the afternoon Air Temperature 69 - 82 Water Temperature 69 - 82
YELLOWTAIL - Santa Maria Bay was the best bet this week.
CORVINA - Fair catches through out the bay.
SNOOK - Devil's Curve and Mario's Spot seem to be the best producers right now.

IN GENERAL: While late, summer conditions are finally beginning to happen – at least up in the esteros. A few snook to 15 pounds were caught and released this week on our greenie deceiver. Also a few leopard grouper, jacks, and corvina were caught using chartreuse and white Clousers. One boat traveled 25 miles on a heading of 210 degrees and was rewarded with a handful of tuna to 50 pounds even though the sea temps were around 65 degrees.
AIR & SEA: Clear sunny skies with little wind Air Temperature 60 - 72 Water Temperature 60 - 65

IN GENERAL: Thump, grumble, growl . . . like a sleeping giant, we are starting to hear rumblings that Magdalena Bay may be springing to life. A rumor here, a good catch there make me believe that things are beginning to stir. So, I think a trip to Puerto San Carlos is in order next week to find out for myself. Larry Kenny, Abenaki Publishers (Saltwater Fly Fishing and American Angler magazines), and maybe my friend Don Sloan will join me in a quick trip late next week to see what’s up.
AIR & SEA: Still cooler than normal with the wind still being a factor. Air Temperature 60 - 72 Water Temperature 60 - 66.
YELLOWTAIL - Aha, they are there and coming to the surface on slack tide at the entrada. Nice sized fish to 20-pounds so the rumor goes.

Further outside the entrada we are starting to hear sketchy reports of dorado and billfish. Also, a few tuna are starting to show as well. IN GENERAL: Better conditions in the last few days produced a few yellows at the entrada and the sierra finally returned on the current rips in the bay. Up in the esteros, it is still time to explore some of the mangrove channels that are often overlooked. If the stock spots don't produce, go exploring.
AIR & SEA: Clear skies with windy conditions in the afternoon. Temp 60 - 75 Water Temperatures 60 - 68
YELLOWTAIL - You will need a shooting head to get down where they are hanging out.
CORVINA - Still plenty of smaller fish throughout the bay.
SNOOK - Little pressure this week.
HALIBUT - Find a sand beach and give it a go.
SIERRA - Watch for the birds, and the current rips. Here’s a tip: the current rips are usually easy to spot if you watch for the foam along the edges.

Subject: Great Days Ahead
IN GENERAL: Same story here: cooler, overcast and windy conditions keep even the most determined fly-fisher close to the beach. Heard a few rumors of yellowtail at the entrada, but nothing that I could confirm. Up near the Power Plant there were a few corvina and several smaller snook caught using a small chartreuse Clouser. I looked at the Satellite Sea Temps provide by Terrifin and it looks like we can expect the offshore to get active in the next month or so. There is a warm water current working its way up the west coast of Baja and is now up as far as Punta Tosca. I would not be surprised if the tuna and dorado made an appearance offshore soon.
AIR & SEA: Still overcast, with windy conditions in the afternoon. Temperature 63° F / 17° C Humidity 81% Dewpoint 58° F / 14° C Wind Calm Pressure 29.94 in / 1014 hPa Conditions Overcast Visibility 3 miles / 5 kilometers
YELLOWTAIL - Maybe a few down deep, but don't hold your breath.
CORVINA - When things get slow, go check out the bridge at the entrance to Puerto San Carlos.
SNOOK - Warmer water near Power Plant holding a few smaller fish.
HALIBUT - Find a sand beach and give it a go.
SIERRA - A few around the commercial pier.

Subject: Cool Weather and Clouds are No Help
IN GENERAL: Explore, explore and then explore some more. Right now the best game plan is to pick an estero (estuary) and spend some time exploring it at low tide so that you know where the deeper holes are. Then go back to those holes and fish on either an incoming or outgoing tide. Fish them like you were fishing for steelhead, using the current to sweep your fly out toward the center of the channel. When you get bit, hold on tight and let the current help hold the fish mid-channel so you have a chance to land the bigger ones.
AIR & SEA: Still overcast, with windy conditions in the afternoon.
YELLOWTAIL – Scarce, hit or miss for a few down deep at the entrada.
CORVINA – When things get slow, go check out the bridge at the entrance to Puerto San Carlos.
SNOOK – Check out Devil’s Curve.
HALIBUT - Sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser are a good bet. I know this sounds redundant, but that’s where they are.
SIERRA - A few around the commercial pier.

AIR & SEA: Overcast conditions persist here and when the wind picks up in the P.M. it is downright chilly.
YELLOWTAIL - A few at the Entrada, but not enough to make the run out there.
CORVINA - I can’t believe how many of you overlook the bridge at the entrance to town.
SNOOK - Look for the deep holes and pound them.
HALIBUT - Sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser are a good bet. I know this sounds redundant, but that’s where they are.
SIERRA - A few around the commercial pier.

Subject: A bit more garlic on the scalops, please
IN GENERAL: The most action this week was the opening of scallop season. With over 400 permits issued, I don't think the tasty morsels have a chance.
AIR & SEA: Warmer morning and windy afternoons.
YELLOWTAIL - A few at the entrada.
CORVINA - The bridge at the entrance to town is pretty good early mornings.
SNOOK – Devil’s Curve is the best bet for these guys right now.
HALIBUT - Sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser are a good bet.
SIERRA - Watch for the birds out in the bay toward the entrada.

Subject: Magdalena Bay Update
MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Wed., March 06, 2002
IN GENERAL: The entrada continues to provide a few medium-sized yellowtail. Up in the esteros, the corvina, spotted bay bass and pompano have been the best bet.
I will be attending the Fred Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show in Long Beach. I'll be in Buenavista Beach Resort Hotel's booth on Thurs. (3/7) and Hotel Rancho Leonero's booth on Fri. Stop by and checkout some of our new flies or chat.
AIR & SEA: Sunny skies and 70-59 degrees with some wind in the afternoon.
YELLOWTAIL - Good action near the entrada.
CORVINA - Up towards Devil’s Curve .
SNOOK - A few smaller fish down in Almejas Bay.
HALIBUT - Try the sand beach directly across from Puerto San Carlos to the west with an olive or chartreuse Clouser.
SIERRA - Slowed down this week.

Subject: Marlin, marlin, marlin!
. IN GENERAL: Marlin!, Marlin!, Marlin! That cry was heard loud and frequently on the 6th and final trip of our Flyrod Marlin 101 Series. Our guests this week were John Cole and his wife Charlotte “Acha” Lord from Reading, Mass., longtime client Michael Uremovich, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and our East Cape guide Jeff DeBrown. All were looking for their first marlin on the fly and nobody was disappointed.
With multiple shots daily, they were all able to add striped marlin to their personal lifetime species list. Pink Billfish Babies were just what the marlin wanted as they came charging into the pattern slashing at the hookless teasers. Flat calm weather prevailed for five of the six days with a cold front arriving yesterday (12/11), the final day. However, this did not deter the marlin and we came into the anchorage in the dark once again last night.
Today, we are headed for the pier and dry land after 36 days on the boat I am ready go home and get an “Yvonne fix.” It is just as well we are not fishing today because it is much rougher than yesterday and probably will remain that way for several days. This trip concludes our 2001 series and in spite of less fish this season than last, it still has all the earmarks of a success. More on that next week after I return to California. I will send out a synopsis and the statistics of the entire series. If you are not on our e-mailing list and would like to receive the report, just e-mail me at bajafly@usa.net and I will send a copy to you.
Three of our 2002 trips are already sold out and we have scattered additional bookings for the other three. If you are in any way considering marlin on a fly, call our office for the latest availability for next year.
AIR & SEA: Cool mornings, warm days and jackets at night. When the winds blow, it can be a little bumpy, but all-in-all it has to be considered near perfect. In the mangroves, it's still T-shirts and shorts.
MARLIN - Large concentration of fish from 20 west of the anchorage at Santa Maria to 20 west of the entrada.
DORADO - A few here and there, but no bonanza.
TUNA - A few schools still up on the Thetis Bank and we saw several larger schools mixed in with the porpoise yesterday west of the entrada.
YELLOWTAIL - Not many this week
CORVINA – Continues good to very good to downright excellent.
SNOOK – We haven’t heard of any monsters, but lots of 6- to 9-pounders.
HALIBUT – About the same.
SIERRA - A few caught near the entrance to Santa Maria Bay.

Subject: Help, We're Surrounded by Marlin
. IN GENERAL - Guests this week are Cynthia and Michael Garrity from Bozeman, Mont.; Dr. Marlene White, Roanoke, Virginia; and the always-present Ray Barker Smith from England.
What a day they had yesterday (11/16)! Moving away from the other marlin boats fishing conventional gear and all alone on a scouting mission, the good ship Mary Lee found lots of yellowfin tuna on the Thetis Bank, then moved to Lazaro where they caught multiples of yellowtail from 5- to 7-pounds, perfect for the flyrod. Next, they traveled 17 miles off the beach to the Double 6’s and found the marlin they’d been looking for - big time! There were fish behind every teaser they put in the water. Everyone had a fish hung at one point or the other, but only Michael Garrity brought one in. It was his first marlin.
They got back to the anchorage at 7 p.m. last night, celebrated with wine and sushi and got ready to head back out this morning.
AIR & SEA: Temperature high 75, low 69. Water is perfect.
MARLIN - Now that we know where the marlin have been hiding, things have brightened up.
DORADO - Seeing some under the bird schools.
TUNA - All along the Thetis Bank.
YELLOWTAIL - Try the area they call Lazaro for firecrackers.
CORVINA - Either the bridge coming into town or try up by the power plant.
SNOOK - Devil’s Curve is a good bet.
HALIBUT - Several caught in the surf near the entrance to the mangroves at Santa Maria Bay.
SIERRA - Great early morning bite at Punta Belcher with a few barracuda and spotted bay bass mixed in as well.
