Sardine Selling and netting as a commercial with right lic, permits and regs is legal.
as a sporty you have to use hook and line to retain them i think.
with the advent of the sabiki many of us make bait easier with them.
Hawaiian net only good when bait very near the surface.
F&G commiss has been to busy with groundfish and salmon issues to deal with it.
I think even staff is ok with proposal to upgrade. I might fire off a letter and go to the next meeting if anyone thinks it matters.
Sporties take and use so little of the sardine
biomass that I believe it would be something like
.000000000000000000000000001percent. or less.

DFG reads this board, so they are now aware of the reg. if they weren't before. If you are making bait in Avila, be careful. They will pounce at every opportunity.

Chad/tincan2
I have 2 thrownets , an old vhs on how to throw, and a frisbee style throw bucket somewhere. Back in the ealy 80s I fished the gulf coast of Florida with a freind and learned how to throw
them. all the locals know. After I got older with tiredback and sore shoulders I quit throwing them as live bait was avail at PSL before sunrise.
If I can find the stuff I can loan you a net and the tape to practice with if you are interested.
BTW, unless they changed rules, you can only net
anchovie, surfsmelt, and shiner perch and maybe
squid and shrimp but they still havent acted on the rule change required to make sardine lawful.
you have to toss back any sardine (or bycatch)you net accidentaly.
That was not a problem 10years ago as chovies were the majority but now sardines are so it may not be worth the trouble. fragile baits are injured by the net so I have had more than half of the chovies die in a couple hours.
Dekes drive thru bait is much easier but not always avail so let me know if you want to learn?

I was one of those So. Cal. boys who grew up thinking that bonito was catfood. Boy, was I wrong. When properly bled, iced and the filleted, it is really good. We ate some tonight prepared in an Italian style with onions, peppers, olive oil, oregano, and garlic and it was out of this world. Screw the cats, I'm keeping bonita from now on.

Hugh,
Wed looks to be optimal for this week. I was out on Saturday and you could have wakeboarded. (very nice weather). They were catching them from the entry at the harbor at PSL to 260ft water. If the weather is nice I would head out towards the red/green light and start in about 80ft of water and zig zag east and west from 80-180 ft towards the south. We were most successful on Green Rapalas at about 5-6 mph.

Good luck and be safe. I may go Wed. Try and take a radio if you go. Weather report below.

Fresh to strong (19-31 mph) northwesterly winds will generate
a 5 to 7 foot northwesterly (285° deep water/265° shallow water)
sea/swell (with a 5-14 second period) through today, decreasing
to 3 to 5 feet Tuesday.

A 3 to 4 foot northwesterly (290° deep water) swell (with an
18-20 second period) will arrive along our coastline on
Wednesday, increasing to 4 to 6 feet (with a 14-16 second
period) on Thursday. This northwesterly swell will further
build to 5 to 7 feet (with an 11-13 second period) on Friday.

Strong to gale force northwesterly winds will produce a 9-11
foot northwesterly sea/swell (with a 7-11 second period) on
on Saturday and Sunday.

Preliminary analysis:

No high-energy swell events are expected through Dec. 23, 2008.

(Arriving from the southern hemisphere)

A 2 to 3 foot southern hemisphere (190° deep water) swell
(with a 15-17 second period) is forecast along our coastline
on Wednesday through Thursday.

Hugh,
Winds look OK for Tuesday, but the Bonito have been moving out, which means they may be way out there. Lately they have been caught in about 260 feet of water out to the southwest of PSL. You will have to troll to find them. I would use 6" HOOCHIES about 75 feet back and rapalas in the middle about 50 feet back. Look for birds working the surface and concentrate on those areas, no matter the depth. Good luck....

R Marti/Rad 21for explanation, carefully read thread back a bit further.
I never Said nor meant Michelle "Needs" to be defended, We were discussing party boat catch- care practices, she fairly cautioned me against using generalities ,and professed very good catch care on her own vessels account and presumabley some others. Because she has done so, and I take her at her word, I meant to incicate that if the subject comes up again and the Writer isn't specific, as I probably wasnt clear myself at first, I would go to bat to keep the record straight. so no reference was intended to "Need" in present tense.

Tree Doc, I always remeber Pearl Harbor, and my late fathers stories about where he was when it happened. something like this, foggy from the years. (Sorry Not a fish Report guys)
He had visited aboard the USS Arizona off Santa Barbara for "Semana Nautica" with a Swim/dive team from Santa Maria about 1938 or 1940? and was Duckhunting in Morro Bay With I think "DOC" Smith,(Bill Wilson, thats your grampa).
he was thinking about the combination of Guns and
Boats he was seeing in the back bay and how they reminded him of the awesome arizona he had been on in the recent past. Later that day when he heard about the surpize attack, and that the Arizona was Sunk and Destroyed, he was in disbelief that such a Powerful vessel could be so "easily" Sunk.
He was too young to enlist but at 16 he got into the merchant marine and by 17 had seen the world by sea, mostly in the pacific and told stories of floating bodies at leyte gulf, kamikazes and
port call in tokyo after the war.
He always called battleships "Battlewagons" and had a tatoo of a sailing ship on his arm, made sure his kids could swim and toldus of friends lost in the war,and a strange story of a local (cent coast) Native who was visiting relatives in Japan on Dec41 and was inducted into the imperial navy where he lsot his life at the hands of the U.S. navy! My dad had to track this down to tell the family at his mothers request I think.
WWII in the Pacific is part of the local herirtage, the yacht club was even given to government use in those years and was repopulated by WWII vets the sea in their blood.
There is a torpedoed coatal tanker Just up the coast that had left PSL that night and still seeps crude.
One time about 25 years ago we laid into Morro on the way back to psl fom a long albacore trip
for fuel and beer and respit from the wind and I think it all came back to him again.

The last trip for me of the year but well worth it. Fished off the coke plant about 230 feet of water and got 10 nice bonita, lost 2 and had 4 knock downs. Three sets came as doubles. The dark colors seemed to work best with the bigger jigs. Kept close to the birds and kelp patties. Nice ocean! The fish all got lively at the boat with seversal nice runs. Another cooking suggestion:
Almond (or walnut) encrusted – slice fish, dip in egg. Grind up almonds until fine, pat both sides of fish into nuts, sear in olive oil, high temp, both sides.

Stephen Bengtson,
Your query might be a good question to pose directly to DFG. As I recall, when the MPA guidelines were set, the State Marine Conservation Areas were open to Pelagic Species which would encompass the Bonito. The State Marine Reserve Areas are closed to all Take.

What I find interesting now is the current regulations state the approved take in the SMCA as "Salmon - Albacore" rather than the broad spectrum of "Pelagic Species".

Might be a worthwhile question to DFG's Marine Management Dept. to get an definite interpretation of allowable take in that area.

Fish report 12/7/08 Pearl harbor day.
Jimmy B Jr. reports 260 feet several miles off lighthouse. multi hookups on slightly larget bonito , dark "feather" geting most of the fish,+ 1 on rapala, 1 on swimbait. 1 nearly spooled the 12# spinning rod/reel and he lost a lure Braking it at final line.
Slightly bigger grade of fish yesterday and today he thinks but hasnt weighted or meassured one yet today. no shark interaction yet today.
although he has the wire leader handy.

Catch them ,yes,in these Qtys near port? Iwould argue there, although I hope it Recurs more often. annually would be nice. :-)

My guess would be a basking shark, if it was slowly cruising on the surface. I think we are too cold for whale sharks. My two cents.

We were out yesterday with our boat and another friends boat. Went from Morro to San Luis in beautiful seas and put 5 bonito in the boat with 2 of us. Almost all of ours came on swimbaits. We had to clear the baits about every 5 minutes from kelp. Our friends boat ended up with 11. The best bite for us was out around 220 feet. Fish seemed scattered. On the way back we saw a huge shark just north of Diablo Canyon and stopped in 63 degree water to take a look at it. Sure looked like there might have been bonito there. Didn't know if the closure area allowed tuna fishing so we just watched the shark on top of the water for a while. We weren't sure of the species. It was a beautiful day in the sun and I hadn't been south in a long time. Hope everyone does well today.

Back in from one of the most beautiful days of the year off PSL. Bonito were spread out from 50 feet deep to 300 ft and there were no major concentrations of fish around the birds/bait like there was last week. We put 5 big ones in the ice box and were thrilled. Caught 2 on a green/gold hoochie and 3 on rapalas. Probably tomorrow will be the last chance at these wonderful fish.

Michelle, you may misunderstand me on 2 items?
Large qtys of Sarda Chiliensis are not annual above pt. conception, ivce only seen them about once every 8-9 years since the 60s, many anglers just "sack them" if not educated or assisted.
Party boats( the skippers at least), of course "know how", but knowledge equipment avail, and angler participation/deckhand practice are not always "optimized", the angler is part of that equation, I have seen good and less good examples from local boats. I believe catch care is important, more so with Sarda C.
than most of our other avail species.
We probably agree in general? crew and I watched sacks of dry, stiff fish go from patriotSF to pier a Sunday or 2 back. Their meat was side by side with bled/gut/iced/fish , visually very different. I didnt taste theirs raw, my prefered option.
If all they want to do is "CAN" it it will likely be "ok", or even "good".
But do you think that grilled , smoked or raw it will be equal to B/G/I? are you saying that?
Even canned it is not as "Tasty" as white albacore loin ,in my opinion and that of canned fish buyers nationwide or demand would skyrocket.
The only recent lesser B/G/I peices I remember mentioning were from one of my smokers on a very cold windy rainey night, an extreme exception.
I doubt your Bonito taste any "better" than most
canned, likely the same but I hope it does and you share the recipe :-), always looking to improve!
Likely we both want to improve catch care practices and minimize wasted fish, and maximize the enjoyment and rewards of sport fishing.
If you ever get a chance, get those kids at sea into the bonito, maybe an older group? those fish can bring an ear to ear smile, let me know if I can help.

With only friendly and helpful intent.
sincerly.
B.A.

This is what we are cathcing.

Pacific bonito, Sarda chiliensis lineolata, is a marine species of bonito.

It is colored blue to violet above, with metallic luster becoming silvery ventrally. It has ten or eleven stripes on its back running obliquely from the dorsum forward, and fifteen or more rakers below the angle on the first gill. The first dorsal fin is contiguous with the second and longer than the head. The caudal peduncle is slender, and the body entirely scaled. It has no teeth on the vomer. It has a small keel on either side of the median keel on the sides of the caudal peduncle, and six to eight finlets on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the caudal peduncle. The maximum length is about 40 in and weight 25 pounds. It is found anywhere from inshore to about 100 miles offshore from northern Vancouver Island to Chile , though it is not normally found north of Point Conception. It usually travels in schools or "Swarm". Fish and squid are its main diet. It is caught by trolling and still fishing, using feather lures, spoons, or live bait.

Blackie,

That is a different fish you are talking about. They are nasty (bloody).

Mexican Bonito, Striped Bonito, Bonito, Bonita, Bonito, Bonito Mono, Sarda orientalis.

The Bonito is one of the most common members of the Scombridae or Tuna, Bonito, and Mackerel Family found in Mexican waters.

The Mexican Bonito is characterized by its “tuna-like” appearance, dark blue back, silver sides and belly, and a series of 8 to 11 broken horizontal stripes along its upper sides. It does not have spots between the pelvic and pectoral fins.

The Mexican Bonito might be confused with the Black Skipjack, Eurhynnus lineatus (which has 5 to 6 horizontal stripes along its upper sides and distinguishing spots between the pelvic and pectoral fins); the Skipjack Tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis (4 to 6 horizontal dark stripes on its sides with no spots); and most certainly with the Eastern Pacific Bonito, Sarda chilensis (5 to 6 oblique dark stripes on its upper back with no spots).

The Mexican Bonito is a coastal pelagic schooling species that is found near off shore reefs. It is only found between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz on the Baja California peninsula, south of Acapulco on mainland Mexico, and around all oceanic islands. The Mexican Bonito is normally found in the first 100 feet of the water column.

The “all tackle world record,” caught in Mexican waters as of 2004 stands at 27.0 pounds, with a length of 46.1 inches. The Mexican Bonito is normally an incidental catch on almost any kind of lure or bait. For its size it puts up a horrific fight. It is viewed by locals as a bait fish with the smaller examples pinned to a 7/0 hook with 6-ounce sinker and returned immediately to the deep, or cut into chucks and flylinned or sent to the bottom.

PATRIOT? Ice? call them and ask but they are not accustomed to "catch care: beyond wet gunny sack I think. good question for party boaters.
If no way to ice , if you can, find a way to bleed and gut them you are at step one. fileting and cooling filets might do but that might reduce your limit to 5? size not measureable .
They dont let you (normally) bring ice chests
aboard for several good reasons but ask and see?
I doubt it though.
maybe put a couple of ten pound bags of ice in your gunny with the fish? they are innexpensive.
if you cant do "catch care" there, try canning them if they turn out "red".
Just dont let them dry and stiffen in the sun full of blood and guts. not everyone agrees but
bonita for fresh consumption benefits from bleeding and cooling if at all possible. party boats (up here) not used to handling them. maybe the skipper and crew have a solution?
If they tell you that they are "fine" in sacks unbled I would doubt their fish taste buds but it is safe and some people won't care.
If you want meat use medium gear and strong leader and just sling them over the side. If you want sport use sub 20# spin but you may have to gaff. but they are a blast. bring both? sizling hit run starts it off .
swim straight at you next, and then they run from the boat when they see it, finally they do a small version of the tuna death spiral and they are yours.
Have fun.

thanks Michelle and Eric,

I'll print your posts out and keep em handy. I'll be out for bonito in the morning.

speaking of bonito I have a recipe for a dipping sauce that I used on some grilled bacon wrapped bonito a week or so ago:

mix 1/2part soy sauce ( i prefer san-j organic wheat free tamari which is a better grade than kikkoman) with 1/2 part balsamic vinegar, add a splash of sesame oil. microwave till warm.

Stacey:

There is no magic combination of numbers with regard to swell size, period, tide, wind, etc. for the entrance to Morro Bay. I've seen the harbor entrance break in a ton of different combinations. An 8-foot NW swell at 22 seconds can be just as powerful and deadly as a 15-foot swell at 12 seconds if all the conditions are right. That's kinda how it was last Saturday: 8-10-foot swell at 22+ seconds, coupled with a negative afternoon tide.

About the only rule of thumb that I would ever go by would be that if the buoys (Cape San Martin in particular) are showing 8-foot or bigger, especially with a longer period of 18-seconds or over, it's time to be very wary, check all the other factors (wind forecast, tide, etc), but most of all ASK the folks that work there for a living - the Harbor Patrol and Coast Guard - of what they have seen and expect later in the day. It's called local knowledge and it is priceless.

That said, here are my suggestions:
1. Check all the forecasts, buoy reports, tides, etc. What may be fine in the morning may be deadly in the afternoon.

2. If the conditions on paper (or the computer) look marginal at all and you still decide to go, drive your rig out to the dirt area at the Rock that faces the bay, commonly called "Target Rock." Park and sit for at least 15 minutes and look at what is happening at the entrance.

3. If you still go, before you power up to head out, stop and idle 100 yards or so inside and have another look. Make damn sure that you are heading through the jaws between wave sets and not right into the teeth of one. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people get to the entrance, see nothing because it's in between sets, and go right into the teeth of a set. Take your time, 10 minutes here or there isn't going to make a difference on your fishing day, but it could make a BIG difference in going to Davey Jones' locker or not.

4. When you head out, head STRAIGHT out, not due south toward Buchon or NW toward Estero where you want to go fishing. Head STRAIGHT for the red and white "MB" buoy 1/2 mile or so outside the harbor. DON'T turn left or right until you reach it.

5. When out for the day, monitor the conditions. Call the Harbor Patrol or Coast Guard for an update on the entrance conditions. Don't be shy, that is what we are paid for. We both monitor marine channel 16.

6. When heading back into the harbor, ALWAYS make your approach from the same MB buoy no matter the direction you are coming from. There are some serious shoals on both the north and south sides of the channel up the middle that have caught numerous boaters and turned a beautiful day into disaster.

7. When you get to the MB buoy, sit there for a bit just like you did on the inside before you went out. You'll get a feel for the sets and what is going on. Since you are likely in a power boat, you'll have the advantage of being able to match the speed of the swells when coming in. Watch for sets, and follow one in. Don't try and out race a set because you see one coming, take your time and let it go by.

And again, if in doubt, ASK! At the Harbor Patrol we monitor channels 16 and 12, our phone number is 805-772-6254. Coast Guard monitors 16 and 22a, and their number is 805-772-2167.

Thanks, and be safe. Oh yeah, don't forget to ask.

The other weekend several bonito were caught off Morro. Have the fish moved around the point? Over a month ago I caught a large bonito off of San Simeon and was sure hoping they'd be closer to Morro. We're going to give it a shot this Sat. as well. Hope everyone does well and stays safe. If you yak guys are out there please take a vhs radio with you and give a shout out to all the power boats so there isn't a horrible accident. When everyone is catching fish it is sometimes hard to see a small vessel.

Stacy,

there is none. I usually won't go if it is 8 feet and rising, coming from less than 280 degrees. That is just a starting point though. Saturday's swell was coming from 300 degrees at 8-10 feet so I wasn't worried when we left. I learned that the long interval and high energy of the wave made it do what it did (don't have to explain since you and I were on the same boat). I don't think anyone expected that to happen...I will still stick to not going when there is a big westerly, but Saturday was a good reminder to always keep one eye behind you at the entrance in any conditions.

I always practice coming in between sets when it is small too. It probably looks like I am always over-reacting, but it makes me feel more comfortable with my approach angle, speed, etc. when things ARE sketchy.

I also use my radar everyday while going in and out of the harbor in broad daylight. Then when I have to use it, I know every green nook and cranny.

After all is said and done though, if it weren't for the Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol's support, I wouldn't have attempted it. It was just too scary looking by the time we got there...there is always Avila, especially if you don't have passengers on board.

Marty,
What time will you be open on Sat?

Also can you PM me your email. I want to set up a time with you for some boat maintenance in the off season whenever you are not busy.

Thanks
Chad
