Kind of old news but I slammed the salmon last weekend just ouside of Morro Bay.On Friday I had a legit #30lb fish plus a 20+pounder fishing by myself, straight out from the rock in 204 ft of water. Both fish came on a lime green crocodile on the downrigger at 80ft trolling through a baitball. On Sat. morning I saw fish in the same spot (along with 30 other boats)...but with no biters we moved inside at 9:30am to 140ft between Toro Creek Road and Whale Rock.We picked up 3 nice fish off a large baitball on Croc`s and green hoochie flasher combos again at 80ft on the downriggers. We also had a double hookup and farmed both fish.I have had all my bites trolling REAL SLOW (1.5-2.0 mph)just as the gear was coming out of the baitballs....jeff

Oh yeah, Rob I do need one, especially since the water is warming up. I feel the albies will be here shortly, so save it for me. I'll be up in Los Osos this weekend unless the weather sucks, going for salmon and butts. See ya

For those that aren't familiar with the area, those coordinates are 54.6 miles from Pt. Ana Nuevo (above Santa Cruz).

There here!

from Bat's
Hot off Bayside:

THE FIRST ALBACORE WERE CAUGHT THIS MORNING BY FRANK(SEA ANGEL) NEAR THE GUIDE ABOUT 70 MILES OUT!
Frank and crew started the morning with a triple hook up and one on bait. They put 2 of the 4 Albacore in the box. The numbers where they are catching fish are 37'05/123'19. The water is flat calm and I have a feeling they will be catching more Albacore through the day because the conditions are good. This may be the earliest time of year I have heard of Albacore.

Well its a big NO GO for offshore this weekend for me and crew. 10-20k 6-8ft wind chopped swell ... no fun. May bang out for some Halibut bounce balling ...but other than that still on the sidelines for the chickens.

Depending on weather and what day you can count us in as well ... The FUCARWEE is ready to run. Have the Beer Festival in Avila for Hospice on Saturday, so depending on wake up, hang over, and weather we will be at the ramp.

Went out or MB yesterday - searched with the fleet, but only one knock-down for 4 1/2 hours of trolling. Tried just about everything in our box, plus bait - all to no avail. However, I must say that the weather was great - and it was an awful lot better than doing work around the house.

The latest temp charts are showing a really nice temp break @ about 40 miles out of morro. It looks like it goes from 56 to 62 degrees in a matter of just a few miles. I'm thinkin of making a run for it this weekend if weather permits. Is there any other boats Going?

Fished again today out of MB. Very nice day on the ocean, very little wind again until about 1:30. We had 4 knockdowns, hooked two fish, and landed one (but farmed the other). Landed a nice 36 incher on a purple haze/green flasher at 90 feet. Farmed the other fish (about 12 lbs) on a brown hoochie/red flasher at 50 feet. The other two knockdowns were on RSK at 90 feet with green flasher. After the second torn up herring, I put on the hoochie and caught the fish 5 minutes later. Is it me, or do others have a hard time hooking fish with bait? We fished about the same area as yesterday, maybe a little further up the coast. It sounded pretty slow on the radio. Only saw one other fish caught.
Hope to get out again next weekend. Anyone try for halibut lately?
later,
steve

Fished out of MB today. We caught 4 salmon, from 24-34 inches. Had two other drive-bys. We caught them East of the floatilla in 160-180 feet of water. Two were on a brown/white hoochie at 50 pulls on a diver, one on a green/white hoochie at 60 feet and another on a RSK at 100 feet on the downrigger. Great day of fishing on a very nice ocean. There was very little wind until about 1 pm. Lots of grey whales in the morning. Saw a pod of huge dolphins, probably 10 feet long. They were grey and molted white. Anyone know what kind?
Thanks Bob for searching for albacore for us. We were thinking about running tomorrow, but will just go for salmon again. Most everyone caught fish today, a few boats got limits.
Best fishes,
steve

Hey Mango , you forgot about the assh*** in the sailboat that was blocking the one side of the ramp on Sat morning at 0600 and said he could not move, so everyone had to back up and use one side , Oh Well got to have something to about we had a O on the salmon but limits of rockfish, I think my karma from IDAHO salmon trolling is following me, where you can troll in lake Coeur D alene for 14 hours without a hit, I DONE IT. Good luck on the Albacore RECON.

Today we made our first run for albacore. I used Terafin to go to the spot that Harrel mentioned below. It turned out that the water had moved and we had to go out 50 mi and a little south to get to 58 degree water. The color was ok but there was no sign of life, not a bird, nothing. We trolled around in a south heading because the white caps were up. At 11:00 we quit and ran back in for a little salmon fishing and caught one 20 pounder before the wind came up at about 2:30.

For the guys coming up here from SB or anywhere else. There are only about 45 parking spots and some street parking available. Overnight parking/camping is not permitted. We have comercial guys that use the parking lot 24/7, there are sometimes broken or left behind trailers and boats, We also have some live aboards and RVs that use it (let me see did I forget to piss anyone off) LOL.
Sometimes it is difficult to park here even at 6:00 am. So use good judgement (or one of our fine motels)

Welcome to Morro Bay and have a nice day.

Weather/SST/Blue Boat-brakes;

Now, tuesday looks to be the best day to check for Albacore. SST shows good looking water 40 miles out on the 35:10 line Terrafin indicates 58-59 degree water in the afternoon and I supect a couple degrees cooler at night.
Mike(BlueBoat) - Champion Trailers is the best place to get disc brake conversion kits. They are on the internet or give them a call @ 1-800-229-6690. Left MB this afternoon @ 1300 on a solo desperate whim... scored big. First fish was 25lb bled, and 2nd went 28lb bled. Just plain brutes! It was hectic but I got bit twice and boated both. Second fish came at 1615 on the way in. Thanks for all the reports guys, because I probably wouldn't have gone out today otherwise.

The weather was great today out of Morro Bay and there were fair numbers fo salmon caught near the rock in 150-200 feet of water. I could see 35 boats around us. A few boats caught 0 but most had 2-4 fish including a few 30 pounders. We caught two 20 pounders and lost another nice one. There are plenty of bait balls to fish around. Both live bait boats are out of commission for about a week so if you are planning to explore for albacore you are just going to be trolling. There is 59 degree water at 35:30 and 121:45 about 40 mi on a 260 from Morro Rock. That is the first place I would run to and I might go on Sunday if the weather permits.

Hey Tsunami, yeah we were out there Wednesday sorry didn't see you out there,it was sure quiet one the radio. We headed out @ 6:00 am and ran straight to the outside area to about 300 ft.The water was real clean and about 49 degree. So we went back to the inside where we had seen some good water on the way out. We put one on instantly, then lost one at the boat later on before being blown out out of there.

The Halibut are here. A friend of mine caught two decent size halibut just north of cuyucos last week. They were both caught on swim baits between the kelp beds.

We fished for 3 hours in front of the rock today in 200 feet of water. There were great bait balls and a great salmon bite. Sam on the Barny C caught 10 for five guys by 10:00 am. 75 to 90 feet down and green hoochies and apexes. The weather was great with no wind by the time we left at 11:00.

We fished out of Morro Bay on Wednesday for salmon and couldn't get a strike, we dropped the balls at 6:30 and trolled 'till 8:30 or so and then headed for the barn. There were a few commercial boats out working north of us so we tried that area and ran down hill from there still no takers, maybe next time? Mango,I saw you out on wednesday did you have any luck ? There is a water temp break out 40 mi on a 265 heading from Morro Rock that changes from 51 degrees to 59 degrees in the space of about 2 mi. If we can get a break in the weather I would like to run for albacore. The Monday forcast is for 10-15 knotts of wind and only a 2-4 ft swell. The first day I can run out is next Wenesday.

Has anyone heard if there are fish out of PSL. I live in Grover and that is a much shorter drive for us. Hoping to head out Fri, Sat, or Sun, depending on weather. We'll definitely give a shout once we are on the water.
thanks for the info guys.

Hey Guys ,,, I just had a thought this morning do you think we can get credit for all the rockfish we are saving with all this wind, It will be real interesting to see what the fish counts will be for this year , and then they got the nerve to close rockfish in JULY, OH well I think JR and I will save the fuel for now , looks like the wind is going to blow all week, good luck to all that brave the wind. Oh yea did everyone hear about the charter salmon boat sinking in SF , one death , sad tale to a great day on the ocean.

I went out of Morro Bay today and the weather was nice for about two hours. We caught 2 salmon, one was 17 1/2 lbs. We fished in 140 feet of water and caught the fish down 60 feet on grey apexes. Read my post below about the Regional Water Quality Board. I heard that the Board directed staff to come back with different alternatives besides making the Central Coast a Marine Protected Area that would prohibit all fishing.

Weather.
Still not a lot of swell but the wind is smoking on the outside.

Will:
When it is blowing on the outside the inside weather, to fish for salmon and rockfish, is usually ok in the mornings.Precisely when the wind will start on the inside is difficult to tell. Sometimes early sometimes not till noon or later. If you live close enough just go and take your chances. When it comes to weather there is no sure thing. Like Blackie says the PGE report is by far the best.

Morro Bay did produce very good catches of salmon for the comercial boats today. I heard from the fish market that they caught salmon right out in front.
More importantly, today the Regional Water Quality Board considered a midigation plan for PG&E's killing of fish larva at Diablo. Staff recomended that PGE pay for creating a Marine Protected Area from Arguello to Piedras Blancas that would prohibit all fishing. The Resource Legacy Foundation, an environmentalist group backed with $130 million from Packard tried to get DFG to get interested to no avail. So the group is trying an end run through the RWQB and the board's staff can't wait to shut us down. Since 18 people asked to speak at today's public hearing, each speaker was given only 2 min. I asked for 4 minutes because I said I represented over 600 CCFCC members but they wouldn't give me the extra time. Even though we only had one day's notice from the Tribune article, Mel de la Motte prepared me with a four page written statement, of which I only got 2/3 into the first page, a summary of the MIG's rockfish study and a letter from the Deputy Director of DFG stating their opposition to the MPA which I had entered into the public record. This was necessary if we have to sue the RWQB in the future. When my 2 minutes were up members of the audience yelled out to the board to let me continue and that I could use their 2 minutes but the board refused. I was so pissed that I left at that point and don't know what action was taken by the board. Stay tuned for an update. This could be the worst thing that ever hit us fishermen.

bob's first post was "a" limit which is two fish now its 6 fish (3 limits)his next post will probably be all 40 pounders. It's been my experience that a "secret" salmon spot lasts about 20 minutes before the fish move elsewhere.I had a secret once but the people I told it to couldn't keep it. I'll bet that if bob's boat was sinking he wouldn't keep that a secret ! See, this is what we do when the wind won't let us go look for Albacore !

ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!

Friends: We need your help and support. Another insidious evil effort has arisen on the central coast with a goal of shutting down recreational fishing.

PG&E has allegedly been guilty of killing millions of larval fish in their "cooling systems at Diablo Canyon". They contend that this has not had a big impact on surrounding fisheries (and we know this is true because the fishing near Diablo Canyon has been fantastic ... I fish near Diablo all the time and know how good the fishing is in that area). Nevertheless, PG&E just wants to get the government off their back ... so, they are willing to pony up big cash to buy themselves out of this problem.

So, the Water Quality Control Board needs to know what to do with the money that will repair and ameliorate the problems caused by Diablo's warm water discharge ...

So, what do you think they are proposing? Don't laugh here ... they are proposing joining up with the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation to help construct "Marine Preserve Areas" ... where fishing will not be allowed. CRAZY! They are actually proposing MPAs that would stop fishing along the central coast ... Here is the impact:

1. Put Virg's and Patriot Sportfishing out of business unless they are willing to travel long distances up or down the coast to get to open areas.
2. Essentially kill all private recreational fishing along the central coast.
3. Cost communities like Avila Beach and Morro Bay millions of dollars in lost income from rockfish angling losses, motel losses, fuel losses, restaurants, sales tax losses, etc. etc.
4. Force those who want to go groundfish angling to spend much more in fuel (and pollution) to go long distances to get to open areas ... create more risk of danger ... cause less time fishing because of so much travel time.

I could go on and on about the evil of this proposal. MPAs have never been shown in the last 50 years to improve the fisheries in adjoining areas. That was the reason the Channel Island Marine Santuary proposal was not going forward until Gray Davis appointed a personal "hack" to the Fish and Game Commission that he knew would vote in favor of the CIMS closure (and eventully got the CIMS approved on a 2-1 vote by the Fish & Game Commission).

The MIG group of this county spent an entire year evaluating the viability and effectiveness of MPAs last year and voted NOT TO INVITE OR ENCOURAGE THE MONTEREY SANCTUARY TO COME INTO OUR AREA ... because the MPAs are not effective or helpful (except to close down fishing).

The Resources Legacy Fund Foundation (left wing environmentalist group) has weaseled its way into the graces of the Water Quality Control Board by saying how great these MPAs are. The Water Quality Control Board is having a public hearing tomorrow at

895 Aerovista Way
San Luis Obispo, CA

This topic is suppose to come up in the afternoon. It would be great some of you could appear to voice your disapproval of this absurdity.

Live-fishermen ... you will be totally out of business if this MPA is created ... unless you want to travel up to Pt Sur or down to Pt. Conception to find your fish. I don't know how to attach a copy of the staff report, but I will forward it to anyone who contacts me.

The CCFCC will have a representative at the meeting to tell them how misguided and off-base they are. We certainly will file lawsuits to stop this idiocy if it comes to that.

Mel.

The forecast is no good for the next 7 days. Not geat big swell but wind, wind and more wind. NOAA is calling for 15-25 through the weekend and the computer models show it through Wednesday ! The mornings may be ok on the inside for salmon/rockfish but expect to be blown out early. As for Albacore - good luck and I don't mean finding the fish.

Well, we have have been watching that water the last two weeks, and after the wind subsides I believe we are going to bump out and take a look. Would be nice to have some coverage when we pull the trigger. I will keep in touch Stacey, Still hoping to fish the WON tourny at Catalina the 21-23 ..but if not I think we will run outside here and have a look around. With these strong NW winds suprised the water has acctualy heated up over the last two days .....this year could be epic!

If I remember correctly we were catching albacore in the 3rd week of May last year, I’ve been looking at the terrafin and the water near the csm buoy down towards the elbow looks promising for LFT. We are thinking of making an exploratory run towards the end of the month on either the 22nd or the 29th if conditions permit. Is anyone else thinking of making a run on either of the two dates mentioned above?

Friends:

THEY'RE BACK!!!

SALMON BITE IS BACK ON CENTRAL COAST

Last night three of the Patriot crew guys went out to look for salmon and came back with a limit of six!

Today, Steve Moore and a few crew & friends went out to see if it was a fluke or not. We had a slow pick for five salmon by 12:30 p.m. Then another Patriot Sportfishing crew member, Dustin, brought the Patriot out with two more fishermen and they started "mooching". They quickly hooked and landed 3 nice salmon. So, not being stupid, we got rigged up for mooching too. We quickly got on a big bait-ball and got into a hot bite and landed another 7 big salmon. So nine fishermen on these two boats nailed their 18 salmon by 2 p.m.

Thank you to Steve Moore and the crew of Patriot Sportfishing for a nice day on the water. It was the first time I had been mooching on the Central Coast ... and it was a blast!

Be sure to use barbless circle hooks for your mooching (I recommend 3/0 hooks.) If you use 2 hooks, be sure that they are "fixed" at the bottom and the upper hook is not "sliding". You can do well with whole bait hooked through the nose .. or cut-bait herring.

The fish are hungry ...

Here is a picture from today's outing.

Mel.

Jim, Check the Diablo weather link at the top of this board. That report is usually right on the money. The Bouy report will also give a realtime look at what is happening and a forecast for the next few days. Be careful about the KSBY weather report, we have had our A** kicked in the past when they said it would be "a good day on the water".

From the looks of the SST the water temps are approaching 58 degrees at both the CSM buoy and the PSL buoy with a sharp temp break. Virg's is selling great live bait, a mix of sardine and anchovie. I bet the first albacore come this month. Lets get some.

We went to Moss sat/sun for limits of salmon and great weather and the best steamed clams I've ever had at a place called Phil's fish market which is across the bay,the salmon were hitting watermelon apexes and white hootchies, moochers were doing well also.It sure would be nice if Morro bay would go off with the salmon like monterey bay does, but I guess that a 2.5 hour drive isn't too bad. If your going to drive up to Moss landing and are going to use Espinosa road be carefull making the run across the freeway it's a suicide run for sure.

bloody decks forever!

Went out fishing rockcod on Sunday and we did ok. Left from Morro. It was windy either from the shore (hot) or from the sea (cool). Limits of blues( some large schools}, reds and a few gophers. Using squid and jigs. Consistent bite at about 100 ft. The blues bit anything and the reds liked the color red. It was sure good to be out on the water again and I sure appreciate all the good info from the rest of you.

I ran up to Moss Landing Thursday for salmon and the bite was great for the first two days. On Saturday we only caught 5 12-15 pounders and on Sunday we got skunked as did many of the commercials. Today the bite was also dead. On Sunday we tried to motor back home and fish rockfish on the way down but the weather got too nasty at Point Sur and we had to return uphill against 10 foot seas and 23 knott winds at 7-8 knotts. Thanks to Randy Jonson on the Marlin and John on the Teacher's Pet we were able to hitch a ride back home. I heard there is a salmon bite off of San Simion on Sunday.

Virg's reports 18 Lingcod on Sunday. Did they really catch 18 buffalo cod that met the 30" regulations or did they include the shorts too. That would be awesome if they caught that many legal cultus cod.

Friends:

Let me throw out some advice (for what its worth) concerning rockfish angling under the new rules.

There are very few lingcod that are above 30 inches in length (new size limit). However, there are many lings that are smaller in size. They are voracious and will attack almost any bait or lure in their zone. It can be annoying to catch smaller lings on almost every drop ... so you need to use lures that are more likely to attract other species. Lings usually are caught right near the bottom.

There are many tastey red rockcod available in nearshore waters. They really like plastic/rubber swim baits (the bigger the better). Drop to the bottom and slowly jig upward 30-40 feet off the bottom. Then drop down to bottom and start process again. A school of reds usually looks like a small "tee-pee" or upward collumn near the bottom on your fish-finder.

Lings also will go for the big swim-baits, but not as frequently as they bite metal or lead jigs like Braid slammers and Jax Jigs.

Also, blue rockfish, olive rockfish, and bolina tend to hold higher in the water. If you have your own boat, blues, johnny bass and bolina will often appear as small sideways stringy objects holding suspended midway or toward the surface. Drop down to this midway depth and you might start having fun catching blues, johnny bass or bolina. The ling cod usually do not hang out in this area. If you are fishing with Patriot Sportfishing or Virg's, they will usually tell you the depth that is holding fish. They also will be avoiding lingcod areas since very few lings will make the 30 inch limit.

If you really want to find those 30-inch lings and other monster rockfish ... you will need to fish above the lighthouse above San Simeon.

Good luck guys.

Mel.

Friends:

The Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition (CCFCC)is a local organization that fights to protect the rights of recreational fishermen. Recently the PFMC (federal regulatory body) wanted to close down all groundfish angling from Pt. Conception to the Oregon border until August 1, 2004. Because of strong efforts of the CCFCC and our lobbying efforts to gain a separate region along the Central Coast, we were able to get the PFMC to allow the "south-central region" (from Pt. Conception to Pt. Lopez) to reopen for rockfish angling in May and June (with only a closure in July). We have formed a good relationship with the Director of DFG (Ryan Broddrick) and his chief deputy (Sonke Mastrup) in recent months. We think the long-range prospects for recreational fishing along the central coast are good!

On a different subject, the CCFCC thanks all the good citizens who paid for auctioned items at the February dinner in Morro Bay at the Community Center. Marc Riley bought a fishing trip on my boat as part of the auction. We took Marc and three buddies rockfish angling on the May 1st reopener. Pictured below (from left to right) are Terry Andersen, Marc Riley, Joel Riley and Pat Murphy. These are some of the nice "reds" they bagged on Saturday. It is so nice to be back on the water bringing in those beautiful and tastey rockfish.

Rockfish: Since I started this I guess I better try and clearify what I think the changes are.
"If you want to be terrific you have to be specific"
Sounds like something Johnny Cochran would say.

Now included in the ten fish limit with out a sublimit are; Gophers,China, Grass, Black & Yellow and Kelp rockfish and don't ask me how to identify them !
There still separate limits, both size and quantity, for Boccacio (1 ea at 12"), Greenling (2ea at 10 ") and Cabazon (3ea at15"). These are all included in the ten fish limit.
Lingcod is now 1 ea at 30" good luck !
Still zero take for Canary, Cowcod and Yellow eye and our area will be closed in July for rockfish.

Steve, I left out the "nearshore" in the subgroup term and you are right about anyone fishing for rock fish they better get a copy of the regs/changes which are in a chart on the F&G marine resourcs page.

Harrel, Not entirely true. Yes, the nearshore 2 fish sublimits did go away, but there are still other constaints. 1 Boccacio, no canary, Ling Cod must be 30 " as well as some other rules that anybody fishing our area should be familiar with.. Steve at Patriot

The regs for rockfish have changed effective 1 May.This time for the good. You can keep the first ten fish and it doesn't matter what they are. F&G did away with the subgroup limits. Smart move it was only killing them to release them anyway.
Also I heard that Matt (took over Charlies bait operation at Morro) has live bait, anchovies and sardines.

Friends:

I have received a report that the administrator of this web site and 3 other anonymous fishermen made a trip from Morro Bay up to Monterey (by sea). Along the way they decided to try bouncing for halibut ... and hooked this nice lingcod. The 20 pound specimen was 36 inches long and was RELEASED UNHARMED. I might head for that fishing hole after rockfish season reopens this Saturday to see if I can bag that fish ...

Good luck to everyone on the coming weekend's reopener.

I have fished moss every weekend since the opener for limits and made many a friend and family poop pink. Watermelon apex has gotten 90% of the fish, one on the greenback mack croc, one on straight rsk, and opening day all on green hotspot with phaze hootch. The apex is great as no flasher to fight. Fish have come from 20-50 feet max for us. Early a.m. bite. We have been done at 9:00 only once and that was because there was three of us (6fish) other that that 7-8 a.m. Chip Tamagni tamagni@charter.net

Andrew

We caught our fish on Dodger with green & white Apex, Green Hotspot with Clear Rotery Killer And Red Hotspot with purple haze hoochie. They were 50 to 60 Ft. down.
Slips @ Moss Landing are 50 cents a ft. 12 bucks for a 24ft. I had mistaken the price on previous post

Good Luck this weekend.

Moss Landing Report;

Three of us Fished Moss today for limits by 10:30. A little slower today but still limits for most boats. We only mooched so it took a while for us to find "moochable" fish. It was much less crowded today than the weekend was or will be. This Saturday commercial salmon season opens so be prepared for many, many boats. Most of the boats including ours were about 4-5 miles north of Moss in 200 ft of water aand most fish came in the top 50 ft.
