My buddy and I will be in San Carlos April 17th. We're pretty experienced here in Massachusetts (Stripers, Blues) but have no clue about San Carlos. Can anyone help? What can we expect to catch? Who should we charter with? We plan on bringing 113H and 114H Penns with medium to medium/heavy rods and medium spinning gear. Is this O.K.? Should we bring wire?

I just got back from fishing there and the yellowtail fishing wasn't very good. The squid had just hatched so there was to much food. The whales were there and lots of dolphins

I would like to take my wife and kids fishing for Yellowfin tuna, Dorado, and Wahoo. Obviously, I would like recommendations for someone who is reasonably priced, knows the waters, and is reliable for their knowledge of fish. I am the fishing "nut" so the family need other things to do. Can you give me any information
Thanks

LAKE FORK REPORT
In the last several weeks' fish have been caught in numbers in the early morning hours on buzz baits, top water stick, and clear pop-r's along grass beds in 4 -15 foot of water. When the top water action quits try small shallow running crank baits in a natural shad color over the top of the grass where the grass is approximately two feet under the surface. Large10-inch worms in black or blue flake colors and jigs have been producing large fish in underwater creek channels. After 11AM the fish have been playing hide and seek, use your graph. I have had success on a number of fish using a Carolina rig with French-fry type plastic worms, watermelon color in 15 - 30ft of water. Large crank baits like Mann's 30+ along side wood structure in 20ft. I also have been having luck trolling with the large crank bait in open water near the Dam. Fish turn on again around 6:30PM until dark. Look for schooling activity, it is starting to take place and it will pick up near the end of September.

FISHIN WISCONSIN STYLE
This week my travels have taken me to the great state of Wisconsin for an Invitation only fishing tournament on the Wisconsin River near the Town of Mosinee. A select group of approximately 75 pros was invited, including such names as Danny Hurd from Leesburg, Indiana, Neil Stadler from Antigo, Wisconsin, Treg Whitaker from Roger, Arkansas but formally a Wyominian and myself, Skeeder-D from Quitman, Texas. The Wisconsin River Tournament was held on July 5th, 2002. The clock started at 5:30 AM. I was tired from driving 1,120 miles to get there and when I did, I realized the other pros were only using spinning tackle with ultra lite line with 6 - 8 lbs test. Being from Texas, I always think "big", especially when coming from Lake Fork. I forgot my lite stuff. So Gander Mountain fishing store was glad to assist me with the supplies I needed. An out of state fishing license cost me only fifteen dollars for a four-day pass. Back to the tournament: The area were the tournament was being held, I noticed there were no fiberglass boats, only heavy duty welded aluminum John boats. Large rocks stuck out of the water everywhere. So I was lent a boat with no trolling motor, "OK". After we launched together we all headed North on the river. Shortly after we all started I noticed guys jumping out of their boats and pulling them across the tops on the rocks against the current. I kept going on by, and then bang I was stuck. Then I was also pulling my boat, as the others just shook their heads. Danny Hurd, not knowing the river took some deep, steps between the rocks and spit some water out to. Finally the fishing began in some deep water I think, I had no fish or depth finder either so everything was a guess. Neil Stadler, being a local pro started catching small mouth bass right from the get go. He was using a Mann's chrome lip less crankbait. Danny Hurd used a 4-inch tube jig, a green, red flake color. I used a 3-inch smoke grub, and Treg, used a little George type bait.
I was the first to catch a keeper. Every third cast I lost my bait. I went through countless numbers of hooks, weights and grubs. I caught numerous small mouth bass, walleye, and catfish. The catfish would make my heart race because I would believe I had the record fish that would win the tournament on the line every time. I noticed from a distance that Neil lost as many crankbaits as I did grubs. That was costly. My competitors were highly frustrated over the conditions and the fish bite. Because of the narrowness of the river, you would have to go along ways to get by other boats to get a fresh spot (unfished water).
Danny Hurd finished first, I finished third. I forgot to mention that Danny is my brother-in-law. If you never fished the Wisconsin River, I give it five stars.

I would like to encourage readers to e-mail me at skeederd@hotmail.com or call with upcoming event info, stories of your hunting & fishing experiences and any areas of concern or debate.

Take care until next week:

Subject: Fish Report - Week of June 22

Just got back from a week of fishing in San Carlos, er 2 days of fishing, 2 days of boating, and 3 days of margaritas. The wind was awful, forcing us off the water five days. Overall we caught 10 dorado, hooked a marlin but broke a crimp after about 5 minutes, also broke a line on a good sized sailfish.

Everything we caught was between 29 & 37 nautical miles out from 180 to 215 degrees from Marina San Carlos. I heard of one boat out at 45 miles that had a great day, then two days later someone got caught in high seas at 40 miles out... Heard rumors that there are giant sized schools of baitfish around the East Cape/La Paz area and that is holding the Dorado south.

Almost everything we caught was on feathers - the dorado on mexican flags or pablo blancos, the Marlin and sailfish on pink & whites.

LAKE FORK AREA FISHING REPORT
Going for numbers or Size? Schooling action has started on Lake Fork. Numbers of largemouth bass can be caught on main lake points and flats. These fish range from 8 – 16 inches in size. LOCKHART "Chuck and Spin baits in chrome or Tennessee shad colors work best. You can cast this bait twice as far as a rattle trap. In the dark before the sunlight hits the water my clients are still throwing black buzz baits. Use buss baits with a black blade and a trailer hook attached along shoreline grass and weeds in 3 foot of water. Other top water action has is still a little slow. The mid day heat can make the bite real slow. The heat also slows down the angler when sweat is dripping in his/her eyes. Larger fish can be caught fishing grass near 5 – 10 foot drop offs and in creeks. Use 10" power worms and fish them slow. Using Carolina rigs on main lake points working your way down from 10 – 30 foot of water have been producing fish on those days where everything else seems to fail. Use small 4 inch plastic worms or lizards. Also using small crank bits like MANN'S 15+ has picked up a few casting a little ways out from the bank. White or chartreuse Spinner baits are recommended on windy days in water 5' – 15' around tree lines. Lake water is down approximately 8 Inches and it is clear to lightly stained.

Be careful of stumps when you leave the boat lanes. Also quick thunder storms with high winds have been common on the lake the last couple of weeks. Surface Temperature is between 82 – 87 degrees.

Subject: Fish Report week of 10-13 through 10-20

The Dorado fishing was excellent all week. The water temp was 83 degrees and the weather was excellent. The sea was rough some days and like glass others with a light breeze from the west. Dorado are about 15-20 miles which is a bummer due to the gas prices in Mexico. The Dorado were in the 25-35lb range and you could get your limit everyday if you wanted. There were a lot of pilot whales, dolphins, seals, and skip jacks jumping about. The trip was great. San Carlos is a very gorgeous area and I highly recommend it. I have GPS coordinates to some pretty good spots if anyone is interested.

Subject: Weather in October

I'm interested in going down to San Carlos in October with my 21' boat. Are the roads okay from Nogales to San Carlos. Is the weather bearable that time of year? I'm a real weather wimp. I don't mind it hot, just not Africa HOT! I normally go to LA Bay and have always had a lot of success. This time I'm looking for Dorado and I hear San Carlos is THE place. Is this true or just fish stories?

Subject: Dorado, dorado

Here is a report from my buddy Stu Burnett:

"Three short words say it all - dorado, dorado, dorado!

The wife and I just got back from a week in San Carlos, Sonora, and I have to say it was probably the best week of fishing in my life! The trip down Mex 15 from Phoenix took 9 hours towing the Mackerelena. Figure a minimum of 45 minutes at the 21 km stop for the Sonora Only permit and tourist visa. Tourist visas are now $21 for 180 days when I paid for them at Banamex. The Sonora Only permit (as always) is free. The road down is in pretty good shape with a few bumpy miles here and there. Tolls (with the boat) are 192 pesos ($21) each way. One other thing we found interesting on the way down -- they have pictures of a police car with an officer standing next to it posted on billboards at ground level here and there along the way, usually in the middle of nowhere. We wondered if the police ever actually hide behind these, or if they were some kind of "We're watching you!" reminder. We had a good laugh.

Put the boat in at Marina San Carlos. They had no gas for a couple of days, but had plenty at the end of the week for $2.00 a gallon. Marina Real was charging over $3.00 a gallon for gas. Slip fee with water is still $9.00 a day and they now require a $25 deposit for an electronic key card to access your dock. No live bait was available, but it wasn't needed anyway.

We fished five straight days, with some snorkeling around San Pedro Island on one of those days. On two different days, the water was absolute glass. We'd be 25 miles out within an hour of leaving the dock. The best fishing was on a 180 heading 20 to 26 statue miles from the entrance to the harbor. Fishing was also good anywhere between the 180 and 210 heading. Lots of whales, porpoise and kelp in the range I mentioned above and crystal blue water at 82 to 84 degrees.

The dorado were thick in this area. Thick in quantity and thick in size. It seemed like they got bigger by the day. I was pretty happy coming in with a limit of 25 pounders the first couple of days until I got a new personal best of a 50 pound dorado on the third day. This was an absolutely magnificent fish! Also picked up a 26 pound dorado under a turtle. Lots of marlin and sailfish action, too. The billfish were cooperative most days and we had several hookups that came unbuckled. Caught and released a 150 pound class marlin one day and a quality sailfish a different day. We also spotted a large shark and actually had him come into our pattern, but he didn't take a lure.

The dorado actually got to be pests. We sighted a nice billfish on the surface and before we could get to him --zing -- another dorado. Same story with the tuna. I was able to locate a school of yellowfin in front of the whales and porpoise and as I trolled into them -- zing -- yet another dorado! We did manage to finally get a tuna hooked up, but he spit the hook while he was still deep. I didn't feel too bad because after I called the other boats into the tuna bite, they experienced pretty much the same. Another boat, The Greek reported that out of seven hookups, they were only able to get one nice tuna in the boat. Several other boats reported the same thing. So it goes! I never thought I'd hear myself say I that I did NOT want to catch anymore dorado, but I found myself shaking them off the lures at the boat because we were at limits and didn't want to gaff any more of them. At limits with plenty of tail sticking out of the box!

You know fishing is good when you're standing outside the casita talking to a neighbor and a cicada suddenly starts buzzing and you jump and turn around because it sounds like one of your reel clickers going off again! Pavlov fish conditioning, but absolutely true!

As for lure colors, it didn't seem to matter. We were getting hit on large dorado pattern marlin lures, a pink and blue Doorknob, tuna feathers (blue, red, or white), daisy chains, cedar plugs, Catchy spinner jets, and jetheads. Lost my beautiful new Star lure to a big bull dorado at the boat, but that's fishing -- you end up losing a few now and then. All in all, a VERY good week of fishing!!!!"

Subject: Week of June 3

Just returned from three days of fishing in San Carlos. We caught our limit in Dorado each day, with 5 bulls over 30 lbs. Striped Marlin were everywhere except on our lines, three bit our lures, but no hook ups. One burnt thumb as I was letting a line out with a free spool when one hit. Had one sailfish on, but practiced a long release.

The weather was hot, hot, hot, with temps around 100F each day. Winds were variable, one day winds and rollers were too high to fish, the next day, the sea was like glass. Surface temps ranged from 73 to 80F, found fish at every surface temperature! We found fish from 14 nm to 25 nm, 180 degrees to 220 degrees. Most fish were loners. We did find sargasso patches one day, but the fish were smaller.

Saw many whales, porpoise, sea turtles, and rays. I hear the fishing is better in October, anyone been down there then?

Subject: March 17-22

Just returned from spring break in San Carlos. Weather and sea conditions were just ideal-calm seas and sunny skies. Got some bottom fishing in at San Pedro Island north and south points and off San Antonio Pt. Nice catches on yellowtail and calico bass on sardine chunks and yo-yo irons. Tried trolling with Rapalas without success but others were doing well on the troll with wire line. Heard isolated reports of yellow fin tuna southwest of San Pedro in isolated patches of blue water but we could not locate them. Water continues to warm.

We also saw fin back whales almost every day! Most sightings were in the channel between Catch 22 Beach and San Pedro Island. Sightings included a cow with calf on March 20. Also saw a large pod of dolphins off San Antonio Point!

Subject: Great bottom fishing

I just returned from San Carlos and had to share a great experience. I took 5 friends with me to try our luck bottom fishing. We went out several days and did ok. On our final outing we went out aboard the Pez Villa with Ramon and Luis. Ramon carfully selected a spot off shore of catch-22 and we dropped anchor. My first fish was a 9 pound Calico bass. We did fantastic all day long. Ramon was always working hard to ensure that we had a great time. If the fishing slowed we moved a few hundred feet and the action would heat up again. We caught calicos, whitefish, and Scorpionfish and eat a terrific meal of seviche and fish tacos prepared fresh while we fished. I have chartered boats and fished with most of the local captains but I have never had a better time than aboard the Pez Villa. If you need a boat or a guide stop and see Ramon aboard the Pez villa he is usually to the west of the marina across from the marinas gas station. If you see him tell him his amigos Eric and Michelle look foward to seeing him in March.
