This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending March 26 th 2007 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company operating out of the new Pez Vela Marina. As one of my old bosses used to tell me……”The hardest part of Forecasting is the predicting the future bit……..” …………..and we have been predicting/hoping for some weeks now for the bite to pick up to the standards expected of the rich waters of Guatemala. Finally the blue water has moved closer in and the appropriate stars seemed to have lined up so that the billfish have concentrated and are feeding well. There has been a steady improvement each day over the last week, with the numbers of fish raised each day now comfortably in the teens and twenties. The “Reel Diver” had a high day late in the week with 35 raises and constant action through the day. The Karr party had “11 by 11” fish to the boat yesterday, when they decided to switch and try some reef fishing for Pargo and Grouper – but a strong start to the day ! The Blue Marlin are still around, but the numbers have diminished as the conditions now are clearly more favourable for Sailfish. We are hoping for the bite to continue through the new moon, and look forward to the last part of the season (hopefully !) being the best part of the year for our clients over the next 6 weeks. Our Favorite Fishing Quote for the week: “Reading about baseball is a lot more interesting than reading about chess, but you have to wonder : Don’t any of these guys ever go fishing ?” ~ Dave Shiflet Contact us at: enquiries@greatsailfishing.com or to register for our weekly fishing report and other > information please click here : > http://www.greatsailfishing.com/en/register.html or > contact us at greatsailfishing@yahoo.com |

This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending December 24th 2006 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company operating out of the new Pez Vela Marina. This week saw the continuation of blue skies, calm seas and an ever improving bite both offshore and inshore. We reported last week on a few days that the Sinclair party fished and were rewarded with raises in the 40-75 range each day. This snap of the Cap’ns log shows the results of another fine days fishing with 75/66/45 raises, bites and catches respectively. It is certainly the Season to be Merry down here !!.........not just fishing, but catching as well !! As we came into the New Moon the fishing stayed close in at 12-30 miles and the Blue Water was apparent as close as 15miles. The inshore fishing has been strong as well – the return of the Commercial shrimping boats has given the fleet the ability to focus on areas where there are bound to be fish – Amberjack until your arms are sore, as well as a decent showing of school yellowfin right off the beach. There have been some Roosterfish caught in the melee as well, mostly being caught on fast trolled Rappalas. We at The Great Sailfishing Company would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families the best for the Season (and not just the fishing Season !) – and a safe and prosperous New Year. We hope to see more past clients early in the New Year, and would welcome the opportunity to make 2007 the year that you finally catch that Sailfish on the fly, join with your friends in a trip to remember, or introduce your children to the thrill of offshore fishing in a safe and welcoming environment. Whichever you aspire to…………..we hope to see you soon ! Our very Best wishes : Les, Carlos, Kevin & Jim Contact us at : enquiries@greatsailfishing.com or to register for our weekly fishing report and other > information please click here : > http://www.greatsailfishing.com/en/register.html or > contact us at greatsailfishing@yahoo.com

This fishing report is for the week ending December 11th 2006 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company operating out of the new Pez Vela Marina,Guatemala. Last week saw the start of the ILTTA (International Light Tackle Tournament Association) fishing the waters of Guatemala again. The Great Sailfishing Company had all 3 Bertams fishing in the tournament, which lasted over 5 days with a “rest day” in the middle. We were please to host the “Chivas Girls” aboard the Island Time (they hadn’t seen such a wide beam in a long time) – you can see the thumbnails here and on our website. Fishing was fast and furious, but with Blue Water ranging from 16-45 miles out, it required plenty of cruising to find large numbers of Sailfish. This was achieved by the last day of the tournament however – as our Bertrams raised substantial numbers on the final day, ranging from 45 for the “Joint Venture” to a record 56 for one of our newest additions, the 35ft “Reel Diver” while our other new addition the Island Time (38ft.widebody) had 53 bites – perhaps there is something to be said then for the low frequency hum of the big Detroit Diesels in raising fish ! The tournament rules meant that we hosted different, and mixed groups of anglers on all boats each day, so it is hard to draw any conclusions from the numbers of fish brought to the boat – and in the end, it is the challenge of our boats and our crews to raise the fish………..and I don’t think anyone can argue that 56 raised on one boat didn’t give the anglers a good chance at winning the tournament ! If you want to come and experience the phenomenal Sailfishing – and it is only getting better – please feel free to contact us at enquiries@greatsailfishing.com or to register for our weekly fishing report and other > information please click here : > http://www.greatsailfishing.com/en/register.html or > contact us at greatsailfishing@yahoo.com

This fishing report is for the week ending 11-12-06 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company which operates out of the new Pez Vela Marina, Guatemala. The fishing grounds for this past week varied between 15 miles to as far as 47 miles. Seas this week have continued to stay calm with sunny skies and light to no wind in the mornings. Very good results continued this week with boats reporting raises in the teens to the low thirties, with releases also in the high single digits to low twenties on conventional tackle and with some boats reporting 3 to 4 releases on the fly.We at the Great Sailfishing Company hosted several groups with one releasing 10 Pacific sails out of 13 bites. At one point a little chaos broke out when they had a blue marlin and 4 sails in the spread. Cap´n Nestor directed the focus towards the Blue Marlin which aggressively pursued one teaser to the other teaser and on to the pich bait....... only to be finally beaten by one of the lit up Sails, at which point the commotion of two hooked up sails proved too much and he sank away from the stern...for next time. Our Sunday charter wanted to target meat fish (we fish how you want to fish) and were rewarded with boating 7 nice dorado,5 yellowfin tuna and several mackeral along with releasing 2 sails. This week saw good to very good results with boats reporting raises in the teens to the low thirties, with releases also in the high single digits to low twenties on conventional tackle. We at the Great Sailfishing Company hosted Dr.DeNunna and son who fished with us for four days. Over 2 1/2 days targeting Pacific sails they released a total of 31 sails along with boating 5 dorado (one in the 40lb + class). The other 1 1/2 days they wanted to target marlin. This fishing report is for the week ending 10-30-06 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company which operates out of the new Pez Vela Marina, Guatemala. The fishing grounds for this past week went out from averaging 30 miles to as far as 45 miles over the past month to 35 to 50 miles. Seas this week have continued to stay calm with sunny skies and light to no wind in the mornings. This week saw good results with boats reporting raises in the teens to the low twenties, with releases also in the high single digits to mid teens - most boats releasing between 8 to 12 sails on conventional tackle. The most exciting news is that the marlin bite this past week has been Great...... with most boats reporting at least one Blue Marlin in their spreads every day. At the end of the week all of the boats released anywhere from one to four marlin within 4 days. Another reason why we are looking forward to the imminent arrival of our latest 35ft Bertram, the "Reel Diver" - as she is fully equipped to chase those marlin with a full tower and a Marlin door. We are looking forward to a continuing strong Marlin bite - and invite you down to experience it for yourselves !! This fishing report is for the week ending 08-20-06 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company which operates out of the new Pez Vela Marina, Guatemala. The fishing grounds for this past week ranged from 30 miles to as far as 40 miles. Seas started out fairly nice ranging between 1 to 3ft at the start of the week. However, on Saturday caused by a storm, seas were as high as 6ft. However, on Sunday clam seas were once again the norm. This week saw fair results with boats reporting raises in the low single digits, with releases also in the single digits. Once again there were lots of Dorado and yellowfin tuna to be had. On Saturday and Sunday we had the Mark Hill party which released 3 out of 4 sails and on Sunday released 2 sails, boated 6 dorado and after a 1 hour fight released a nice 400 to 450lb. Blue Marlin, nice fishing guys. We are very happy to announce that we have a new addition to the GreatSailfishing fleet - a widebody 38ft Bertram Convertible sportfisher. She has a 14.5ft beam - so lots of space in a huge cockpit for when the action gets frantic - and a beautiful fully refurbished Release fighting chair. As soon as you walk on the dock, the boat stands out because of its triple-spreader Lee snr outriggers and the classic Bertam profile. Inside is fully airconditioned for your comfort when underway.......and in case you need it, a little rest and relaxation on the way back to the dock in the evening. With the arrival of this vessel, The Great Sailfishing Company is now able to offer a complete range of Bertam vessels from 28ft to 38ft to accommodate your party. Seas started out fairly nice ranging between 1 to 3ft at the start of the week. However, by mid-week caused by a storm seas were as high as 6ft. We had a charter on Thursday that had to turn around because of these high seas. By the weekend clam seas were enjoyed by several parties. This week skies ranged from cloudy at the beginning of the week with overcast/cloudy days by weeks end. Some nights saw downpours. Most days started with light breezes in the mornings which picked up in the afternoons. This week saw fair results with boats reporting raises in the mid to high teens with releases in the mid to high single digits. Once again there were lots of Dorado and yellowfin tuna to be had. At the start of the week few sportfishing boats ventured out and by mid-week those that tried turned around. This past Saturday our company hosted two charters. Our boat the Joint Venture along with the La Piragua entertained a large group from Banco Industrial. They reported raises in the mid-teens and released 5 sails on the Joint Venture and 8 sails on the La Piragua. Both boats reported boating 10 and 9 dorado respectfully, could have been more but they didn't leave the dock until 9:30A.M.(our boats usually depart between 7:00 to 7:30A.M.). The fishing grounds for this past week have ranged from as ranged from 20 miles to as far as 40 miles. Seas this week have varied from mild ranging between 1 to 2ft to moderate 2 to 3ft seas. This week skies ranged from sunny to overcast days, with a some days bringing light rains; however there as been some nights with light to moderate downpours. Most days started with no to light wind in the mornings to light / moderate winds in the afternoons, same as the past two weeks. This week saw fair to good results with boats reporting releases in the low single digits to low double digits. This week we were happy to host the Jay Halpenny party from Canada. Their first day (Tuesday) saw only fair results with releasing 3 sails out of 7 bites and 6 Dorado. One Wednesday they had a good days fishing releasing 11 sails out of 20 bites and also boating 20 Dorado. On Thursday they also had another good days fishing with releasing 9 sails out of 14 bites. All on conventional tackle. On Friday we welcomed the arrival of Sam Swisher and his son out of Boston. Their first days fishing was on Saturday and they were great releasing 5 sails and TWO Blue Marlin, the first marlin (estimated at 300lbs.) first appeared off of the left teaser. With the marlin rig in hand (Penn International 11 50 wide with 50lb line mated to a tournament graphite rod) the fight was on. About one hour later another marlin again appeared off of the left teaser, estimated at about 200lb. Sam’s son chose light tackle and the fight began, about 1 ˝ hours of a great fight the marlin was in and released. Both of the Swishers had smiles and explained that they were their 1st marlins and on the same day. Today (Sunday) saw another good day with 3 sails being released and another Blue Marlin in the 200lb. Class. That’s right, 3 marlin in two days with another day to go. First week in April, Mosquito Lagoon Here it is April already and the fishing is good. The Speckeled Trout have been bitting good and there are some nice sized ones, running 12-23 inches. You can also expect to catch 15-25 shorts each trip out. There are still some 15-17 inch Redfish around and you can expect to catch up to 20 of them each trip. There are some large Reds in the mix as well. Berkley Gulp has been working great on both the reds and trout! Gold spoons have also been good. There is still at least one school of big black drum around the Haulover Canal and the Port St. John power plant. The power plant also has a lot of Jacks and some small Tarpon directly offshore. I had two young men and their dad out earlier this week, and there is nothing like watching an eight-year old catch a 23 inch trout. His eyes lit up and his face turned into a great big smile. He was laughing and yelling to beat the band. It's worth the effort to take a kid fishing. Try it if you have the chance. Let's talk a little about fishing ettiquite; I don't want to step on anyone's toes and far be it from me to start preaching... but I was raised to respect the rights of every fisherman on the water. A little courtesy never hurt anyone and it sure makes for better fishing all around. If you see someone anchored and fishing in one spot give them some room. Don't crowd right in on top of them. Keep enough distance between you so each of you can cast toward each other and not get you lines tangled. Both of you will catch more fish and have a better day. Good fishing to you all! The record-breaking catches seen during March madness in Guatemala is over with new records set. There are enough stories to dominate Happy Hours wherever fishermen gather for sometime. April began with the fish being less concentrated as they spread out looking for bait. There was consistent action beginning at 20 miles for both sails and an occasional marlin in calm seas. No Report Received this week – Last week’s report repeated As expected, the WFO action couldn't go on indefinitely. This week, the catches were still in the low double digits as the sailfish scattered in search of bait. The acres of small baitfish that had been reported for the past few weeks seemed to have disappeared leaving no other choice than to resort to more exploring. The fleet did find action anywhere from 15 to as far as 45 miles offshore as the boats spread out in search of herds of sailfish seen in the previous week. You can imagine how many times this week’s visitors heard, “You should have been here last week!” Water temperature 78 - 82 Air temperature 72- 84 Humidity 94% Wind: Calm Conditions: Clear Visibility 6 miles Sunrise 5:59 a.m. CST Sunset 6:15 p.m. CST |

Adios Whales . . . Sailfish Records Smashed REPORT #1002. “Below the Border” Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996 Endless Season Update 03/18/06 San Jose, Guatemala This was the week that was and will be remembered for a long time. Sailfish action exploded, reports of sailfish everywhere was the norm for the past week, allowing fleet records, boat records and personal bests to be smashed during the week. Will it continue, Quien Sabe? It is safe to say this week will be remembered for a long time – maybe forever! – and the bar for high boat counts and personal catch records has been raised significantly. Guatemala continues to demonstrate why it is considered the destination to deliver the highest volume of sailfish. Marlin, not what you would expect to hear from Guatemala, but true. The past few days have shown the fleet raising 8 to 10 marlin a day! These are mostly little blues in the 150- to 200-pound range, though three nice fish have been seen. The sails are here, but are decidedly un-aggressive as huge schools of bait are everywhere. Early in the week the wind blew all night and Monday morning the fleet was greeted with grumpy seas and the prospects of it getting worse before it got better. By late Monday afternoon the seas had subsided and the sun was shining bright. Chris Pearson, from Boise, Idaho and Jack Balch, Fremont, Calif., wrapped up their trip early this week calling it one of the most intense fishing trips of their collective lives. While the action was slower than usual for Guatemala they considered the trip a complete success. In the four days they raised 47 sails, cast to 27 and landed 11. During their entire trip they never were out further than 24 miles and had excellent weather except for Monday. Chris had never landed a sailfish before so he was thrilled with the results. Jack a seasoned veteran having fished with us once before demonstrated what he had learned on his previous trip out fishing his buddy Chris by one sail caught in the final few minutes of the trip. Fly selection was pretty basic with pink poppers being the definite winner for the guys on this trip. Action was hit or miss this week with more fish beginning to show later in the week. Chris Pearson, from Boise, Idaho and Jack Baltch, Fremont, Calif., after a slow start in the morning with more misses than hits, came up with a strong finish in the afternoon with Chris catching his first sailfish ever. Jack, not to be outdone, added to his total with the first one of the trip late in the day. Lots of high fives and more than a little bit of Guatemalan rum in the bar. With three days to go, it could get interesting tomorrow. The trick this week was to find the blue water, which seemed to moving around. The calm seas made it easier for the fleet to spread out and search for the action anywhere from eight to 35 miles. Early in the week, there was more seeking than catching! By mid-week the captains had narrowed down the area and everyone’s results improved and double digit scores were not uncommon. With an occasional blue marlin and some fat dorado for variety, everyone had plenty to talk about over fresh dorado hors d'oeuvres at happy hour. With the fleet spreading out and a few boats traveling out 40 miles – most pulling the throttles back at 10 miles or less – the fishing has not been terrific this week. Single digits were the norm with very few exceptions. When the sails did appear in the pattern, they were pretty lethargic and tough to get to take a fly. A few boats did locate a school of porpoise and did well on yellowfin tuna. While the fishing was not up to the usual Guatemala standards, the weather was calm seas and clear skies. The first week of 2006 really fizzled the first few days, maybe both the anglers and fish partied too hard welcoming in the New Year. Mid-week, the fishing began to get its groove back providing enough action to keep bars buzzing at Happy Hour. In addition to the customary sailfish bite, there were just enough blue marlin to make the angler think about which rod to grab. There were even a few fat dorado streaking into the pattern with a gold and turquoise flash to confuse the game plan further. 2005 finished up with a bang with most boats finding fast-paced action. The blue water for this week has been averaging between 17 to 30 miles with calm days and flat seas. Many boats reporting double digit releases. A blue marlin pop this week had the crews scrambling to figure out which gear to use. There also plenty of dorado in the 20 to 40 pound class and one boomer that tipped the scales at 50 pounds. As 2005 season winds down, the chatter on the dock is about another great season that once again confirms the fact Guatemala offers some of the finest sail fishing in the world. With most of the action within an hour or so of the dock – and calm seas – it looks like the season will go out with a bang; and, there could even be a few new season-totals records set. The local fleet, along with a few yachts that arrived recently, have reported good to excellent fishing most of the week. With fishing like this, it’s hard to take time to get ready for another great Christmas in Guatemala. Action early in the week was a couple of clicks slow as boats scoured the waters 20- to 40-miles offshore for the mother lode. By mid-week, the herd was found and the action was cooking again. Mr. Wern Blasaditsch and Rodolf Hotter from Germany fishing on the Tranquility, a 31-foot Bertram, had better action each day as the week progressed. Their best day, they raised plenty of sails, releasing double digits all on the fly. Tom Pero, editor of Fish and Fly magazine and professional photographer Walter Hodges fished aboard the Maverick with Sailfish Bay owner Robert Fallon. Since neither had ever fly-fished for billfish before, there was a steep learning curve to deal with. By the end of the week, however, they both had notches on their flyrods for released sailfish; not to mention, plenty of photos and enough stories to impress their friends for some time to come. It will be interesting to see their take on Guatemala Sailfish on the Fly in Fish and Fly magazine some time next year. This week ending 12-16-2005 we welcomed Mr.Wern Blasaditsch and Rodolf Hotter from Germany. They went out on the Tranquility 31ft. Bertram and on their first day released 8 sails on conventional, 3 on the fly along with a few dorados. On their 2nd day they released 6 on conventional and 8 on the fly and on their 3rd. day was solely fly-fishing and they released 10 on the fly on 15 bites. They have 3 more days of sportfishing and we will report on they next week. Most of the boats have been traveling between 20 to 40 miles and experiencing mild seas. Our new addition to the fleet is the Joint Venture a 35ft.Bertram she just arrived in Costa Rica and will be here in 3 days. She is roomy with a lot of cockpit space for fly-fishing and they are reporting that she just lays down the waves. This fishing report for week ending 11-25-05 is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company which operates out of the new Pez Vela Marina,Guatemala. The 2005 Presidential Challenge starting 11-19-05 and ending on the 21st. This years turny saw a lot of action with the two top boats releasing 39 sails and a marlin each, with one hour making the difference between 1st.and 2nd place. The action ranged between 20 to 40 miles with a couple of boats going as far as 50 miles on the last day. We weclomed Alex McCleod out of London,U.K. who joined us for 4 days of fly-fishing. Alex who had been fly-fishing in the past for sails had yet to boat one,Alex read that Guatemala held the worlds record for sailfish both with conventional tackle and on the fly. So after some reseach he booked his first trip to Guatemala. After boating 12 sails in four days with a few that got away Alex said ¨Guatemala is all that I have read about and it sure feels great when those dreams come true¨ Not only was Alex rewarded with 12 sails but several dorado on the fly as well. Alex fished on-board The Stragos 31ft.Bertram and fished between 20 to 25 miles. |

The Stragos also reported keeping 3 nice size dorado. For the other sportfishing cruisers that went out this week the average was between 18 to 27 releases. We will have the results of this years Presidential Challenge within the next couple of weeks. The fishing for Guatemala this week went from BORING to WFO. Early in the week, boats were traveling 40 to 50 miles to find good action ranging from high single digits to mid-double digits with a few here and there on the fly. As the weekend approached, the fish moved half the distance to the beach ranging anywhere from 15 to 25 miles. The sailfish bite turned on and by all accounts the 2006 Season has begun! Boats were reporting an incredible number of the fish that Guatemala is famous for raised and caught. With even a few yellowfin tuna and dorado thrown in; it was a great start for a new season. All the storm activity during the past month has driven the clean water forty to 50 miles offshore. While the fishing is good, it is not up to the usual level found in Guatemala. Sounds like there are few YFT and dorado mixed in as well. While last month’s hurricane “Stan” left a mess in its wake, the area has bounced back quickly and the port is getting back to normal. While [resort hotel] Villas del Pacifico sustained some damage, they are cleaned up and back in operation. For this week ending 11-05-05 we had a group that went out fishing Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday. The fishing was out between 40 and 50 miles and each day they had between 5 to 7 bites and released between one and two sails. For most boats that went out this week they had between 4 to 8 bites and released between 1 to 5 sails on conventional tackle. Most of the boats that went out this week also reported catching and keeping dorado and a few tuna. The water continues to improve each day from Hurricane Stan. As far as conditions at the Villas del Pacifico Resort and our private houses they are fine,in fact, one would not know there was a flood if not told. In short, conditions at the port have returned to normal. For more info. e-mail us at greatsailfishing@yahoo.com or visit our web-site at http://www.greatsailfishing.com |

For the week ending 10-30-50 fishing is starting to pick-up as the debree from Hurricane Stan settles down. Our charter boats the Stragos and Tranquility went out three days this week and were releasing two to three sails per day plus a few dorado. On Saturday they did some inshore fishing and were rewarded with lots of jacks and red snapper. It will take a few more days before most of the debree from Stan will be gone. The boats were fishing between 40 and 47 miles for the sails, several other boats reported bites from blue marlin without any hook-ups.For more information e-mail us at greatsailfishing@yahoo.com or visit our web-site at http://www.greatsailfishing.com and please remember that the Joint Venture 35ft.Bertram will be available for charters starting in Dec. |

With all the recent storm activity, the water has be off-color and fishing has been tough. Everyone is hoping that the fringes of Wilma don’t extend the poor conditions. There is still a lot of dirt in the water and it will take a few more days before the fishing returns to normal. One local tour operator had a group that went out on Tuesday and Wednesday with only one sailfish being released on both days with a few dorado and their group canceled their final day which would have been on Thursday. It appears that several tour operators are getting their boats ready for their first incoming groups starting next week.We are all hoping that by then Guatemala's great fishing conditions will have returned to normal. Our company just purchased a 35ft.Bertram out of Florida and she (Joint Venture) will be ready for charter on Dec.6th. 2005 Please check out our complete line of new fly-fishing rigs,we have also added several 8,9 and 10wt. rigs for dorado and inshore game-fish. Because of the large clean-up effort after Hurricane Stan, no boats that went out. Also, it will take another week or so for all of the river runoff to get back to their usual levels, thus bringing the blue water back normal distances. To bring everyone up to speed, there has been some very heavy flooding to some parts of Puerto San Jose and Puerto Iztapa. A few of the private houses in the Villas del Pacifico Compound were flooded with two to three feet of water but most are OK. At the resort,a few large trees were fallen and some flooding to the employee quarters and parking lot but the resort is OK and ready for our clients. Currently the roads to both the Villas and Marina Sol are closed but should open soon(they just opened yesterday). There were no boats reported fishing. A little note on the bright side,I was talking to one of our captains and he explained that several of the shrimp farms got flooded releasing tons of shrimp and a lot of the locals got their nets and caught a lot of shrimp. He said his family and friends had a real nice shrimp feed eventhough his house was flooded(a little silver lining). |
