Greg, dead on again. Michele you are right about club leadership changing but what dosen`t change is that I made a living bought a house and put my kids thru school running the Diablo. That can`t be done now and thats sad. You weren`t at the meetings and were asked to leave because I was a Partyboat skipper. These clowns backed Webb all the way. Carl Moore let`s go fishing where? Sangria, Big Fatty this ain`t a joke. Michele, John D. and I were talking today about what you are doing and wish you the best. Capt Dave |

Mike, I won’t belabor the point but the Cambria club knew exactly what Jim Webb was up to. All the members of stakeholders group certainly knew Webb’s position. He spoke as the president of the club at Commission meetings and his letters were in the public records on Cambria Fishing Club letterhead. If members disagreed with him why weren’t they at the F&G meetings? The Cambria Fishing Club sold us out. Live with it. I do. |

The Cambria Fishing Club is a club. The Members and Officers change. Holding the club responsible for something that may or may not have happened under a different leadership isn't really fair in my opinion. I think the Cambria Fishing Club is presently a group of people with many different opinions who love to fish. They are welcome on my boat anytime. |

Mike "Ok I had enough of this subject , lets go fishing". I'd love to go fishing, but it seems like some envrios hi-jacked the system along with a friggin Judas and a club that just sits there and says he does'nt speak for us kinda ruin my day. Sorry to say Jim Webb get's no love here. Carl Moore Tsunami |

Blackie, the letter that Bob`s group wrote to local fishing groups is the one I`m talking about. Not the one Jim wrote to the trib. At that time the club was backing Jim 100%. After the Webb letter to the trib Bob and I were featured in side by side viewpoints. Unfortunately the water is still running under the bridge and the fishing club at the time did nothing to help our cause. Capt Dave |

DAVE; The letter you are refering was written by JW for sure.I dont remember BACKING It , nor would I , I think it was wrong of him to write it send it to the paper with the sole intent that WE as a club were ALL of the same opinion , for those of you that know me , you know i would NEVER back some BS like that , I am a sport fisherman , a commercial fisherman . JIM spoke for himself he did not speak for the club even tho the reference letter made it appear that THE CLUB BACKED IT , I still have the letter. Anyway its all water under the bridge it was something they were going to do to the fisherman and i dont think all the JIM WEBBS in the world made any differance. There is a great old saying that I go by ( YOU CANT FIGHT CITY HALL , BUT YOU CAN SURE SHI- ON THE STAIRS ) It been my motto in times , as a way to protest. Ok I had enough of this subject , lets go fishing. BLACKIE |

Greg, you are dead on, sorry Blackie. I lived in Cambria from `81 to `04. When the process first started I went to a few club meetings and gave my view. The club said they were backing Webb. I was there when the letter from Bob Hather`s group was read, they thought it was a joke and there was no such thing as a right to fish. They backed Webb all the way. That town changed so much I`m glad to be out of there. Capt Dave |

jeff no we are beach fishing , the club does fish the yak during the season . GREG; So you think because of JIM WEBBS actions that the whole club is to blame? for your information the club had NOTHING to do with any actions in The club has been around for at least 35 years , and I dont really think that we as a group approved of his actions the MPA process , what he did was strictly ON HIS OWN , and do YOU really think hes the reason all this has happened to us , I dont think webb was in the north spear heading the MPA , or in the south of us . It was bound to happen , Jim just happens to be the SCAPEGOAT in our area. You can rest assured the CLUB had nothing to do with the actions of the DFG . |

Mike is the Cambria group on kayaks? ~ Jeff Blackies pride in his club is charming. But what should never be lost to the memory of San Luis Obispo anglers is that Jim Web, and his Cambria Fishing Club gladly handed the White Rock MPA to the Fish and Game Commission on a platter and applauded its devastating expansion at the final Commission meeting. The Harvey Street launch and adjoining fishing grounds was for SLO kayak anglers arguably the finest natural combination in the entire county. Never let it be forgotten that Jim, who is anything but a local, and his merry band in Cambria wasted no time in throwing us under the bus. |

Michele, Next season I will post my days off so everyone can expect bad weather on Mondays and Tuesdays. Also the baby is due mid May of 09, I will be grounded for 2 weeks and unable to fish. You should expect epic fishing during that time....Im sure glad I spent all that money on electronics...they will be out dated by the next time I use them.....lol |

Went out of Port San Luis Sunday and trolled in front of Diablo for nothing.Trolled south and picked up 1 Bonito at 12:30 pm. He hit the black and purple Rapala at 135' in front of the red light. Stomach was jammed with sardines. Quit trolling at 2pm because of a sick girlfriend. It was lumpy but still a decent day on the water. |

Stacey, I have not tried that yet. But with the luck I am having this year, I am scared to pick up a new hobbie. Seems every time I have a day off and can go fishing, the weather turns and I cant fish anyway. Hopefully I can hook up with Blackie and learn a little perch fishing. |

PERCH REPORT Them fish are biting for all you who have the fishing blues , the CAMBRIA FISHING CLUB has a new leader for this years AL ROWE memorial trophy JIM WEBB just took over first place from YOURS TRULY , jim caught a 2.2# , 16 inch barred perch last thurs , good going JIM , but it aint over yet , Jim said he lost a bigger one . For those who have not tried , light tackle perch fishing in the surf is some fun and a bonus is there great eating. Now is the time for the bigger fish , come march they will be spawning, so we lay off them at that time, got to keep the fish having them babies , unlike other fish perch are born alive so if you catch a fattie turn it loose . Ok got to go get em. Blackie |

A Christmas suggestion...It is my opinion that the very best place to eat on the Central Coast is The Dock Side Cafe by the Coast Guard station.Try the Bbq Oysters, they are too die for.The fish tacos and swordfish K Bobs are oustanding. Super great atmosphere and live music on the weekends sometimes. It is dog friendly so you can bring your pooch. The owners Mark and Bonnie are the best. Merry Christmas everyone.....happy new Year! |

Well the board is slow so read this: Fishing Tale <img> Four married guys go fishing. After an hour, the following conversation took place: First guy: 'You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I would paint every room in the house next weekend.' Second guy: 'That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I would build her a new deck for the pool.' Third guy: 'Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I would remodel the kitchen for her.' They continue to fish. When they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word, they asked him. 'You haven't said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this weekend. What’s the deal?' Fourth guy: 'I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, gave the wife a slap on her butt and said: 'Fishing or what ever?' and she said: 'Wear sun-block.' |

A few bonita still around just south of Diablo, 140 ft. area. We did not get any on the Pathfinder today (trolled for only awhile then went sand dab fishing), but another boat had a good morning bite before we got there. Most fish a little deeper (rapalas). sharon |

Tuna or not, you all should try the sandwiches at Shell Beach Liq. Top notch food and Tom is a great guy. I always get the grilled pastrami lettuce and tomato, Tom calls it his PLT instead of BLT. Wow its good stuff. It was not me catching tuna, I got the big 0 this year for the first time in 10 years. Maybe Santa will bring us all a huge school of tuna next season, and a few less environmentalists. Merry Christmas! |

happy holidays everyone... got something for you all to chew on for a bite. Our local market owner over at Shell Beach Liquors claimed to have had a regular from the area "Larry" come in a week or two ago with a big bag of fresh tuna that he got offshore about 20 miles from here! Number one, who the F is Larry...and two.. think someone really could have gotten into the LFT's and not let the word out??? anyway, I am sure that Tom from the liquor store knows the difference between bonito and sashimi...se he's a pretty good sounce... so maybe 08 wasn't a bust all together anyway. |

Al - Only one trailer boat launched on Sunday for Bonito with no luck. Had one boat out today and he said he couldn't find any water over 53 degrees. No bird life or feed anywhere. We'll be open normal hours if anyone wants to go giver a try. It's pretty cold on the water the last couple days so bring warm gear. Marty |

Sardinops Sagax. A food, a bait, an industry. This is mostly speculation but is based in what were considered "facts" by fisheries managers. when the regs/rules were formulated. Sardines were already considered "depleted" after the "collapse" of the Moneterey Cannery trade. Huge takes by lerge commercial nets were the norm until about mid-late 1950s. http://www.american.edu/TED/sardine.htm In this you will read that anchovies are assumed their primary competitor. There were once vast schools of Sardine, then for combined reasons of climactic/currents and fishing pressure there were then vast schools of anchovy. Now there are vast schools of sardine again and possibly lesser numers of 'chovy locally. anchovies were so plentiful they were naturally included, sardines were in lesser abundance and were excluded or just overlooked becasue of fishery collapse. I think if these rules were written today, there would be many more small "baitfish" "included" with some broad limitations, and so. cal would be allowed to use them in some places for bait take rather than a broad ban. We fished Avila a hour in 60s and 70s and sardie were rare but anchovies were abbundant seemed about 200/1, and gradually the ratio has shifted to soem number greatly favoring sardine. Deke may have the best idea of their local prominence since hes been providing us with bait here at PSL. You also have the Clupea Palassi (Herring) and we used to use it for salmon bait along with anchovies and sardine. For now I just buy "seasoned bait" from Deke before sunup and on the rare day I toss the net I let the Sardines go, even if some of them become halibut or segull food. |

PSL Report- Bonita still around the red light. I went out today (a day off finally) stopped at a dozen. picked fish up from the red light out to 200ft Saw a couple orcas today, pretty cool animals. Homer and I will be opening up the launch at 6:00am. The Parking lot was re-striped again today. It should be easier to park with the spots angled. C-ya out there! Marty |

Fished the Abalone Farm/China Cove area yesterday for halibut. They're still around. Caught two in 65 feet of water. 32" and 28", both on plastic. Nice day on the water. |

Bait. Wonder who got that research grant? Yes everybody, watch the weather. Not a giant swell forecast, but big enough with gale winds on top to make it potentially very bad. Super low negative tides in the afternoons to boot. Today is the biggest tide change I've ever seen around here; 7.9 ft high tide this morning and a -1.9 ft low late this afternoon for a 9 foot change. Be safe. Steve Barstow, Read the posts below! Tomorrow is not supposed to be a very nice day out there!!! From John Lindsey: Strong to gale force northwesterly winds will produce a 9 to 11 foot northwesterly (300° deep water) sea/swell (with a 7-11 second period) on Saturday, decreasing to 6 to 8 feet on Sunday. Be careful out there!!! later, steve |

Sardine Common name for various small fishes (pilchards) in the herring family. Six species of sardine are generally recognized: five in the Pacific and Indian Oceans (Sardinops species) and Sardinia pilchardus in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In 1998 US researchers announced, following analysis of mitochondrial DNA from the Sardinops species, that they were in fact probably widely dispersed regional populations of the same species, rather than different species. |

Thinking of going out tomorrow hopefully for bonitos. Are they still mostly out of Avila/PSL or has there been any kind of showing out of Morro Bay? What's the best bet as far as lures, trolling depth, etc? Any input will be appreciated. Thanks, Steve |

Paul: You are asking the wrong guy about "pacific" sardines. As far as I'm concerned they are all "bait." I couldn't tell a sardine from a mackerel if you slipped one into my shorts! I was just reading the regulations. I'm sure that somebody else out there can tell us all about it though. Eric |

RE: sardines - read your reg book page 37, section 27.60 (b): there is no limit on the following species: anchovy, grunion, jacksmelt, topsmelt, Pacific butterfish, queenfish, sanddabs, skipjack, jack mackerel, Pacific mackerel, Pacific staghorn sculpin, round herring, Pacific herring, Pacific sardine, petrale sole, and starry flounder. As per a previous post, sardines are NOT included in the list of species included in 28.80: Dip Nets and Hawaiian Type Throw Nets, so presumably a sabiki rig is the only viable and legal method? I have personally loaded up on sardines in avila bay in 20ft of water with a throw net. the water must be dirty enough so they don't see the net or they swim out of it as it drops. One good cast and you have a scoop or more if they are thick!!! I have never seen any regulation naming sardines as a non take species |

Fished out of Morro Bay today for "Halibut" caught three nice blues, one fat gopher, and a keeper Johnie Bass. Left my dinner for the Sea Lions and Seals. Perfect flat ocean and no wind. Hope common sense prevails sometime soon and we can catch fish when the ocean allows!!!!!!!!! |

FYI: 28.80 DIP NETS & HAWAIIAN TYPE THROW NETS. Dip nets of any size and baited hoopnets not greater than 36 inches in diameter may be used to take herring, pacific staghorn sculpon, shiner surfperch, surfsmelt, topsmelt, anchovies, shrimp and squid.Hawaiian type throw nets may be used north of Pt. Conception to take such species. Don't see sardines in that list. |

Sounds sorta like rule change delayed by lack of staff time to study and devise . "rejected" go to page 16 of this link . comment #25 and answer. studying this should take less than a weekend for anyone familiar with west coast sport practices IMO. It might come up in other places too. No one is proposing bag limit changes that i can see. but I guess its better that the dfg doesent make any hasty rule changes as they are wont to do in the past. http://www.fgc.ca.gov/regulations/new/2006/dfganalysisocean.pdf |
