Amir,

Of course it has pictures of people showing off their catch! this is the alternative to killing the fish! As you will notice with most of the pictures the fish are supported in the correct manner so as not to cause damage to the fish while its picture is being taken (a fish has to support 8 times it's body weight out the water than it does under water)
This is like going on Safari in Africa - before they used to take a rifle and shoot everything until they realised game was becoming scarce - now they still shoot game, but with a camera!!!
I apologise if i am forcing the point but going on the evidence - the point needs forced!!!!

Yes everything has a learning curve - make this lesson a steep one!!

Just a response to the below para.

"Do not support your actions with a proffessional body that is set up to guard against your very actions

Please answer this;;;; Does the IGFA have pictures of people showing off their catch or not ??
My reference to IGFA was with respect to the pictures of the catch of fish. Not the catch & release or the bag limit which I do not argue. I have my own point of view on that and PS also note that theres always a difference between guiding another people and enforcing your point of view and trying to prove that you are the boss and Im the master as I know all. The difference can be seen from Chris's post & your post.

Also do remember, that every thing in life has a learning curve...

Amir

Amir,
there is no doubt that your catch is very respectable. Beautiful fish indeed! The way they are treated, is not. However, it is also your choice, and you are free to do whatever you want with the fish you catch. If you are a family man, please reflect on this: Would you like your children to have the same fishing opportunities as you do? This is what a wise old man once asked me. Again, please don't feel insulted. Well done on catching the fish, it must have been a great fight. I just don't agree with the killing of fish.

Dear Troller,
Indeed, people on this forum tend to support the views of those who seem most knowledgeable at the moment...thank you for pointing out the flaw in my "theory" although i admit it is not mine, and i will look up the source. Is it true that larger fish contain better genes then in their roe? Hope you don't get discourage by the fickleness of some posters here and stay longer than some other gurus.

Dear Pranab,
Thank you for agreeing with me, although I was misinformed. yes, there have been many conflicts here on this board, but contrary to your statement, most of the more knowledgable contributers stay away from it, for example Kit, Jeen, Heber, AJ, Martin James, etc. Before you make a statement like "The beauty of this forum is there had been so many fights & so many misunderstandings but at the end of day we talk to each other & this forum survived".
i beg to differ. this forum has become a place where many fights end up in valuable members leaving.

Let us hope for the good of the community that this will end.

As usual, i hope nobody feels personally insulted by my comments

So, back on a happier note:
Went fishing yesterday, the bridge between Marina Mall and the main island of Abu Dhabi. Tide was out, strong current, tried casting spinners at the queenfish, lots of follows but no bites. switched to a small popper, and immeditely picked up 3 queenfish to 3kgs. they were all released to grow bigger, but since i was fishing alone i have no pictures

Amir,

This is an exerpt taking directly from the IGFA website - the Presidents message:
PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH

Lead by example. Whether it be limiting your catch, modifying your gear selection or practicing catch and release, there are ways that we can improve how we impact our fisheries. We can also pass these philosophies on to the next generation. As we get older, time seems to move more rapidly. Before we know it, that child or grandchild of ours will be an independent, decision-making adult on the water. Influence every opportunity you have. The small lessons you teach today may have profound impacts on our game fish for years to come.

Do not support your actions with a proffessional body that is set up to guard against your very actions.

Now if you don't accept it from me - accept it from IGFA!!!!!!

Spear fishing is also sports fishing if Iam right.

What do those guys do with the 100+ pound fishes that they kill while spear fishing.Arent those guys sports fishers?

All professional charters (inlduing the fujeira guys) have pictures of dead fish on their websites, what about that?

The discussion can go on & on, but I am too inexperienced to keep this topic going on, therefore, I call it a quits on this topic.

Troller,

Thanks for your advise. Whoever leaves the forum, its good for them that they doesnt visit the forum anymore. The forum is not dependent on any single individual. Alot of people have left the forum for different reasons where new members have also joined in. I have not seen any forum where the fishing reports are not supported by pictures (Ref IGFA, PGFA)etc.

I am a angler. Not a commercial fisherman neither a sportfisher. However, ones get experienced enough I would definitely like to become a sportfisherman.

As long as the fish is dead and the catch is not given away to the cat, I would not release the catch------ HOWEVER, I DO PRACTICE CATCH & RELEASE OF THE JUVELINE OR SMALL FISH, specially humours.

I would like to also advise that we restrict our discussions withouth people who is not directly involved or directly addressed, Otherwise we could dragging people who are not directly involved in to a controversy.

Pranab,
Perhaps you could extend the duty that Kit did to you, to Amir and explain why killing 100kg's of fish is not conducive to sustainable fishing and that as a responsible forum we send out the wrong signals by posting photos of dead fish all over it.
Amir, are you a sports fisher man or a proffesional fisherman? Are you fishing for fun or for money? If you wish to continue fishing for fun then forget about taking an excess amount of fish to contribute towards the expence of your charter - it's not a viable reason to kill on this level.
Martin James, Fishing expert and coach that runs courses out of Fujeirah, visited this site around 2 years and discontinued because of the amount of fish being killed and photo's of such. What a crying shame! Imagine we had someone with his knowledge to ask questions of on this forum?
Chris, i am sorry if i am opening up an old wound with this topic but it seems that while the majority of people who read my post supported my views (and indeed yours - one for the pot was ok) that 48 hours later Amir is being congratulated for doing the complete opposite and killing 100kgs + of fish.
Also, whereby 1% maybe the statistic you give for catches taken by rod and line, remember that most of these catches will be coastal, unlike purse netters and longliners. The coastal areas are both nurseries for immature fish and the place where fish spawn therefor taking fish in this area is to take fish when they are particularly valuable to future stocks.
If, as Pranab pointed out, that once a fisherman is knowledgable and experienced, they begin to practise catch and release then surely there is a lesson there for those of us that are not....

Pls note that the 20+ cobia and king were given to the boat guy as we chose the keep the smaller ones as its easy to cook.

Nevertheless to say, that we caught plenty of fish. May be around 100 kg+. Later one we inquired from the fish market and they told us that they would have purchased the fish @ 20/ kg. If we had done so we could have covered half of the trips cost.

hi Abdul,

You are right. The king fishes usually run towards the boat when hooked and then they take their run. If you manage to gaff them on their way in its not a problem.

However, the cobias are a great fighter. They really make the reel scream. Cobias taste very good. I have heard that cobias are from the kings family. Not sure about that. may be others could throw some light on it.

Bravo, Bravo!

Very nice catches Amir.

The Kingfish might have been much easier to managed than the Cobia.

What do you usually do with the Cobia? Are they good to eat.

Cheers!

Hi pranab,

As discussed, the King was caught around 10:30 am.

We left from the marina next to Jumeira beach hotel.

As for the location, as i do not have the GPS locations, I can only say that we went striaght from the Burj and we went around 30-35 miles in to the sea.

Dear troll ,

I totally agree with chris . Commercial fishermen does the max harm to the fish habitats . But having said that i totally agree what you said that we should all in a small way be responsible for catch and release .

But i also realise that may be this thing of catch and release comes to some one early and to some one little late .

I give my example . I started fishing only 2 years ago . In the begening i was so excited about it i used to keep every single fish i used to catch . I remember i had a friend by the name kit who used to tell me pranab why you want to keep such smaller fishes .

But with passage of time i think i tried to realise what he used to say . But it did take time , i mean the this change to come .

And now i do not practice 100 % catch and release policy . I take one or two if its really good size for the table .

I am trying to change my self to 100 % catch and release policy . But what i believe we should try to talk to people who are keeping all the fish by talking personally over the phone & not voice it over the forum as it raises a storm which is uncalled for . Like kit did to me spoke personally and made me understand the effect of over fishing .

I think that is a smart way of reaching the objective . We here are a small community of fisherman in dubai yet we talk a lot about fishing among our selves .

The beauty of this forum is there had been so many fights & so many misunderstandings but at the end of day we talk to each other & this forum survived . By the way troll trying to arrange a trip out of port rashid next friday . I would appreciate your company if you wish so .

With regards

Pranab

Hi Guys,

Went on a family trip with my wife & Shans family for a trolling session from Dubai with a charter company for a full days trolling session out of dubai.

Left around 7:30 am. reached the spot at 8:45.

Within the first 10 minutes the reels started screaming and Shan landed a 20+ kg cobia. The fight lasted for 10-15 minutes and the cobia was brought to gaff. Then started again. Now it was my turn. It was my first trolling experience and i lost the fish near to the boat. Then after 5 minutes the reel screamed again. This time I made sure i do not lose the fish. After 5 minutes of fight the fish appeared and it was a yellow tail barrcuda of around 7 kgs. after a while the reel went of again and shan managed another 20 kg king fish.

All in all we managed three cobias ( one was 20+ and two 8+ kgs), plenty of kings (one was 20+ and the other ranged between 3-8 kgs)

Species caught were barracuda, kings and cobias.

It was a great trip. My first trolling session.

As shan had his trolling set ups, we put two of his set up with 30 lb lines and 8-10 kgs daiwa rods coupled with daiwa trolling reels. The other two set ups were of the boat guy, not sure of the equipment.

Unable to post other pictures. I am in facebook under the name of Amir mufti. Other pictures can be seen from facebook.

The fish were wieghed when we return using the boat mans weighing scale.

Dear troller, dear forum,
There has already been enough blood spillt and tears shed on the topic of Catch and Release on this forum. In my humble opinion, keeping one fish for the table is ok, releasing the rest. If you have paid for an expensive boat charter, and your friends and family ask for a fish for the pot, because they can't go on a charter, then there should be nothing wrong with bringing back more then one.

Statistically, recreational fisherman account for less than 1% of all fishing. Long liners and netting are responsible for most of the rest.

Nevertheless, I am not trying to say that it is ok to kill fish without measure or reason, merely that instead of us recreational fishermen bickering amongst ourselves, we should do more to fight the causes of all the death.

Please do not feel like i have attacked you personally. If you do feel like I did, i sincerely appologize, it was not my intention. My intention was only to show how i feel about this.
Personally, i prefer to release every fish i catch, and buy the fish to eat.

Hi Troller,

I refer to your last post. Ps note that we were four guys and we splitted the catch. The picture taken does not mean to show that it was a barbaric act. besides that we all got our share of fish for the table. besides this, the picture also meant to brighten the post itself.

Additionally the pictures and the report does not show the catches that we released back.

I cannot recall even one instance where we have thrown away the dead fish as it was not consumed by us.

Ramzi,
I could have worded my last post better and offending you was not my intention - but this is something i feel very strongly about and it is something that this forum needs to promote so that our children can enjoy our sport the same as we do.
I have nothing against you taking a fish or two to feed your family with - i guess 4 or five of those fine fish would have fed around 15 people.
My rule of thunb is this; If i intend to eat the fish i catch that same day then i will take just enough for those that i know will eat the fish that day. If not it goes back to breed to provide future sport and stock. Otherwise i will buy my fish out the fishmarket - these poor fish are already dead. So perhaps thinking about your neighbours and friends you will consider the dwindling fish stocks and protecting the sport which you are obviosly enthusiastic about.
i refered to the dark ages as posting pictures of dozens of dead fish sends the wrong message and killing like this should be a thing of the past.
Happy new year to you as well Ramzi. Perhaps my new year resolution will be to temper my emotions somewhat - i hope yours will be to become a responsible catch and release fisherman and protect our sport for future generations...

Dear Troller,

Happy new year, no i was not offended by your comment.

so no worries, FYI, we split the catch among ourselves, then with my share, i fed a family of 4, then with the remainder, i gave it to some to my neighbors and friends on the same day, as i feel that if i wanted to refrigerate them and re use it, i would have just went the the fish market.

out of curiosity, what exactly do you mean by grow and stop living in the dark ages?

Ramzi, i take it you ate all those fish???
I am sorry but trophy shots of so many dead fish make me sick and i will never see an argument for killing such amounts on a fishing trip. One or two for the pot fine but continue to kill like this and there will be no fish left to catch.
Promoting our sport in a responsible and positive manner needs to be all about the preservation of our resources - not some bragging right to display how many fish we can kill in a day - grow up and stop living in the dark ages!!!!!!!!
Get with the picture mate - catch and release!!!!

Hi Phillip,

how much do they charge. I mean what would be the cost for a 7 hour trip and do they only do bottom trips or they also do trolling.

Went out with Kim, Anton, Zaman, Amir(not Amir Mufti) and Febian on an early morning boat trip last Friday.

Pushed out at 6.20a.m. as we can only have the boat till 10.30a.m due to "another" booking. Wind was very cold and sea was considerably quite choppy but still manageable.

I was only jigging while Anton and Kim were initially jigging then bottoming and the other three were bottoming with hand lines.

Was very frustrating due no hits on the (ever so productive blue)jig. Eventually rigged my other rod with a bottom fishing (sabiki) rig. Only managed to catch 2 Shearis while others managed to catch sultan Ibrahim and a couple of trevally.

Just as we were about to head back, I decided to drop my "blue" jig. Immediately I got a hit. As it was not giving much of a fight, I thought it was a kingfish but it turned out to be a 3.5kg barracuda.....which had almost swallowed the whole of my blue jig....which is quite strange as they usually attack their prey at the mid-section!

The (ever soo productive) blue jig SURVIVED (YET)another trip with more teeth marks.

I don't use steel wire leader and only use flurocarbon leader as the steel wire is kind of "spooking" the fish. However after every hits, will check if there are any bite marks on it and remove the damaged section or replaced the leader totally.

Shino Monster Chaser PE2 (light jigging) rod with Daiwa Freams KIX 4000.

Cheers!

p/s Later on, found out that the boat was booked by Amir Mufti and his buddies which managed better catches.

Cheers!

Hi Antonello

Fantastic Hamour you caught there, that will make some nice eating..!! :-)

Don doesn't have a shop as such yet... He has all his Kayaks stored by his home and rents from there. But he will be more than happy to drop the kayak off at a spot in Abu Dhabi if you know where you want to go out from. His details are Mr Don Revis mobile number 050-542-0820.

Let me know if you need anymore details and when you plan to visit Abu Dhabi, we can go out together if you like?

Cheers.

Morning all

Hope you all had a great weekend?

I went out yesterday from the same spot as last time only this time armed with a "Feel Free Moken" Kayak. I woke up at 6am and set off to collect the kayak from Don Revis who's details i've posted here earlier. It was thick with fog and as i was driving out i did think is this a good idea? I arrived at the spot and literally whilst i was unloading the kayak and gear, the fog lifted and out came the sun. To my left there were at least 300 flamingo's in their natural habitat and if some one dropped a pin you couldhear it a mile off, total peace and quiet. So, i set off in the kayak and rigging up everything before i got in. This kayak experience was my 2nd and i'm so glad i got to use a fishing kayak this time as i makes such a difference. I had been looking at Malibu kayak's after Beefy's recent posts but having tried the Feel free - Moken, it worked pefectly for what you need. There is plenty of storage space behind for a milk crate and gaf, spare rods, a confortable thermo padded seat with back rest, in between where your legs are there is a small storage area with water tight lid(great for storing the mobile, car keys, etc) and then in front a long storgae area suitable for boxs of hooks, lines, jigs, lures pliers etc and on the bow a large storage area that you can store your fish in. If you want to see it in more detail, here is the link, i had a yellow kayak.

http://www.feelfreekayak.com/inter/kayak_moken.htm
Back to the fishing....
I set off and began trolling, there were some large kings about chasing bait fish i trolled for about 1 hour up and down, up and down the channel, changing lures as i went along but no success! I then changed the method to bottom fishing and again tried this for an hour and a half but no success, a few bites but nothing hooked. The problem here was my anchor(home made 4 litre milk bottle filled with sand) was bouncing off the bottom thus not holding me in place and thus resulting in me drifting. This made the weight bounce off the bottom and therefore non productive. "Anchor to buy" noted in my hand book and i moved on to fly fishing. During the 2 hours i had been fishing, i had been made to jump as in shocked by at least 3-4 good sized (at a guess i'd say 4-6 kg) Queen fish surfacing no more than 5 feet from the kayak. The noise made by them surfacing and because i was in an isolated area with no traffic noise or construction made it sound like a boulder had been dropped in the water from a great height! They caught me by surprise each time because i was tying another fly or lure onto the main line. Most of the time i caught glimpses of their huge tails. By this time the wind hand picked up and made it very difficult for fly fishing and now it was reaching the time for me to head back and begin loading the kayak and gear back into the car.

This was my 2nd experience kayak fishing and i'll definately be back for more. One thing i have learnt from this is that the fish are not scared to approach the kayak ie you appear as though you are not there. I think beacuse there is no engine nosie and that the kayak drifts across the surface of the water with no noise(unless you are paddling) then you are just a floating platform. Once i have the anchor, i think it will be 100% more productive as you can sit in one place and fish, fish fish...Anyone wishing to try out this method of fishing is very welcome to join me or if you fancy going alone, Don rents out the kayaks by the day or for a few hours and he is keen to promote the sport, he is based in Abu Dhabi. My kayak adventures will continue...

Thanks all, hope someone caught over the weekend... :-)

Went out today with Ijlal to a new spot for me out of Abu Dhabi past Mussafah and on the way towards Saudi although not as far as Saudi.. :-)

Ijlal hooked into a Queen fish and landed it..1 for the bag. Unfortunately all i could land was 4 very small fish that you would probably keep in your fish tank at home..stripey and very spikey little bu**gers they were and tricky to get off the hook.. all were realeasd back to grow bigger as i don't have a fish tank at home...:-)

Lots of surface action and this is the 2nd time in the last month i have seen very large king fish jumping out of the water chasing bait fish. Lovely to watch even if i didn't catch anything worth shouting about. We both tried popping/lures for them but no success.

I am heading there again Sunday ths time armed with a kayak :-) and let's see if i can land one of them..

Well, hope you are all enjoying the holidays and getting some time fishing.

Cheers.

Hi Suli,

Its Al-Ras....not Ras Al Khor. Its just a row of shops selling fishing tackles just next to Deira Library. Other nearby landmarks are; St George Hotel, Deira Fire Station(Civil defence as you call it here).

You won't be able to miss it if driving along Baniyas road which is between the Deira abra and the Radisson SAS (formerly Intercontinental) Hotel...towards the fish market or the Cornische. The road diversion will force you to drive almost at the doorsteps of few of the shops.

Other highly recomended shops are Barracuda and Knotika marine mall. The deira Barracuda is located just next to an optical shop also along the Baniyas Road....directly behind the Sabka Multi Storey Car parking. The other Barrracuda is located at Marina Diamond building at Sheikh Zayed Road...near to the JBR(Jumeirah Beach Residence).

Knotica is located along Sheikh Zayed Road also. Loated in the Al-Quoz Industrial Area at the third interchange.

Let me know what you are after so can guide you further. Reel, Rod or lures?

Cheers!

Hi Adam,
Yes my lure is hot, unfortunately it was taken by barracuda when my line leader snapped before it landed. I bought new one with the same color, hope this will be hotter. Well, thanks for your company, I admit that was my first time on boat fishing/trolling. I’m happy and had enjoyed much.

Abdul & co., good luck to GT trip!

Troller thanks, I caught 1 flathead last Saturday by shoreline fishing. (if this the one in the picture)

Merry Christmas to All!

Hi guys,
Good to see some action being had this weekend - not good to see so many dead fish however - catch and release if your not going to eat!
My flat head trip was a bit of a disaster! Too windy for yak fishing and i battled against it for 30 minutes before heading in.

I went out from Ajman today however and it was beautiful! I had a huge Loggerhead turtle emerge within feet from my yak which was a fantastic experience.
I was fishing with a very light estuary rod with a small shimano reel loaded with 10lb mono. The other rod was an 8 ft light spinning rod. Both of these rods i used to use for flathead in Oz.
I bounced shrimp on both rods for about 20 minutes with no action. All of a sudden both rods bent double and i knew i was not into any flathead!
I desperately fought the two fish for a good 10 minutes, altering the tension on the reels as i went so as not to snap my delicate line. first fish in the yak was a 12lb catfish which i released. Second in the yak was a 7lb snapper, a real beauty which i have just fed myself, my brother, his wife and two kids with - fish and chips - it was great!
Fantastic day out in the yak and looking forward to more action over the holidays.

Good luck to you GT'ers when you head up there - remember, keep em off the bottom!
Great Cuta Roland!
Happy christmas fellow fishers!

Will be having another go at the GTs in Mussandam, first week Jan. :-)

Finally, will get to use the new setup comprising of a Custom-made popping rod from Fishpal (aka Chua)made from T-Russel GT-Kevlar blank (specially ordered from Matagi Fishing workshop, Japan) mated to a 10000 Stella spooled up with 300yds of Berkley Whiplash 80lbs braid with 200lbs topshot(leader). :-)

Lets hope that the weather will be favourble/permitting!

Cheers!

Hi Suli,

Glad to hear you had a bit of success over the weekend. As for the lures, there isn't a way..(I can think of) to add extra weight to improve your casting distance.

You will have to scout around for those having heavier mass. Adding something to make it heavier will also distort the swimming action.

There are few Duel "Alie Magnet" which have ball bearings + magnet inside them to improve casting distance. The ball bearings will shift to the tail section upon casting and additionally, the rattling sound is claimed to attract more fish.

However, the size of the lures will also determine the number of hits/strikes as only big fish will attack big lures. So even if there are fishes around, if the lures are considerably too big...they won't strike.

Cheers!
