Anyone drooling over the idea of albacore enchiladas yet? Four in a tray for $12, corn tortilla with green sauce or flour with red sauce. Morro Bay Community Center this Saturday. You can call me for tickets 674-4854 or message at home 466-2369. It's for non-profit Central Coast Women for Fisheries. I will put a sock in it now about this event. sharon rowley

One more thing I thought of interest; The Wave Energy Project proposed off of Montana de Oro. If you didn't catch the article in our local Rag, here's a link:

Groovy idea, I just wonder how much fishery we will kept out of if this deal goes down? Anybody else watching this? Mel? Local Sportboat Owner / Operators?

Anything coming out of PSL? I saw a couple boats running in from the outside yesterday around 2:15 on what appeared to be some real nice conditions.

Wondering if our Bonies are back out there?

bimini tops, Isinglass encloseures or anything in canvas fabric. Thanks for your reply. Mike

Hola Todo, I just returned from a couple of days up in the SF Bay area where I met with a few friends who volunteer at the Rotarian clinic down in La Paz, BCS. Part of our group will be driving down around the end of February. We plan on taking a little time driving down, as we may have to stop along the way to see some patients in (possibly): Ensenada, San Quintin, Bahia de los Angeles, and Loreto. If there are any interested travelers who would like to caravan down with us you can contact me at: boe4fun@charter.net Bien Viaje, Paul Boe

Dennis, I use a surf wetsuit, it keeps you warm and if you ever get washed into a rip current or off a sandbar, you can float and will not drown. If you get too hot just pull your wetsuit down a little and you are cool again. Wetsuits also let you get out in the water which is cool because you can literally catch fish at your feet and sometimes you can feel them brushing against you as you fish. Be sure to get booties too!!

Dennis, when all else failed on the perch at Montana de Oro I used to take a catfood can and boil a few small sandcrabs in seawater over a sterno puck, turns em red,
Use a two foot leader to a swivel under a slide sinker.
I almost never got my feet wet cause I used a long pole, Blackie has a different method and I'll wager it may be more productive but what the hey, I stayed dry and warm. And he's hardcore.

Blackie, saw some of those red tailed perch at the cleaning station today, they all were a lot smaller than the barred from the central coast.

Mike, Rockfish are open all year with the exception of some species in OREGON. I kid you not that the regulation book is over 100 pages, but most of of it concerns trout, steelhead and salmon.
We went out today and got chased off the water by the thickest fog I've ever seen (OK I'm a chicken and a newby up here, got no radar and the GPS can't see the rocks and there are a lot of them)
I'm an old sailor, not bold
Don't know what exactly a canvasman is. commercial?
Anyhoo still got a few black rockfish and farmed a small canary.
Blacks up here are the same fish as blues down there I reckon, they school up and will bite anything. taste the same too. yum.
Oh, and now I gotta go get a "skipper" license from the state cause my boat has more that 9hp.
Maybe it's a good thing, but more folks drown up here on kayaks than powerboats, costs ten bucks. Oregon has a way of nickle and diming ya.
But when the planets line up.........awesome.

I mostly fish for Perch with jeans and a pair of boots often hardly getting wet. Sometimes barefoot in shorts depending on the conditions. It's all a matter of preference and where you want to fish.

Mike (greencaster),
Hey, nice work on the winter rockfish. Not many days you can get out up there in the winter. Oregon actually has a great chatboard.
http://www.ifish.net/board/forumdisplay.php?f=28
They mostly fish from Newport to Astoria, but some guys on there fish down your way. It will be especially handy when the tuna come in.
Have fun up there. Hope you've gotten out crabbing!
best fishes,
steve

Howdy to all my California central coast friends! The better half and I have been traveling for a while, but have spent the last week at our new home port of Gold Beach Or. And low and behold the typically nasty weather laid down enough for a offshore run.
I gotta tell you folks, the fishing up here is awesome, three limits of lings and rockfish in about two hours, including launch and back on the trailer.
I sure wish the local folks up here had as good a report board as you do, also nobody talks on the radio much either.
saw a guy at the fish cleaning station with a mess of surf perch too.
Come on up and visit, If i'm in the area I'll help you out with local info.

Sea kittens grow up too! Cows or cats would eat us too if they had a chance. Do not mistake a cat's respect for one that is dominate for love, they are killers plain and simple and if you do not believe me ask their friends the birds.
Plenty of room for all Gods creatures...right next to mashed potatoes! So do yourself a favor and save a cow!....eat a PETA member!

Great people and the winter prices are cheap.. Just check mexfish.com for fish reports.Everybody have a great day......Jim

Well General, here's whats happened lately-
Had two boats Sat for bonito for one hook up but it was lost. Sunday one boat bounce ballin for Halibut, no luck. Same boat dropped 4 Dungeness crab pots, they pulled this morning for about 10-12 legals. We also had one boat Sunday for Sand dabs, they had a few but no size to them. So If you like Dungeness crab and have some pots to soak for a couple days it might be worth a shot.

Tincan:

See my post from Friday, December 5 in the archives. As for low tides, the launch at low tide generally doesn't present a problem. Extreme minus tides (-1.2 or lower) can be a factor if you have a big boat (long trailer) and you put your trailer down too far. The concrete ramp does have an edge that I have seen people drop off of. On these tides just take it slow and easy. On any big tide change, high or low, the current can be a factor for sure. Just be aware of and plan for it whether launching or retrieving.

With the Harbor entrance, low and outgoing tides don't present a problem unless there is a big swell, generally 9-10 feet and above. "Safe" is such a relative term and relies on so many factors that there is no magic answer. Again, see my post from the 5th, it goes over exactly what you are asking. And if you ever have any question, CALL US!!

I know the hoist gets sketchy at PLS during low tides. Has anyone had bad experiences with the launch at MB or getting out of the mouth at low tide. I know there can be a serious drift at the ramp but what about the mouth of the bay? I seem to recall there can be a sand bar build up. Do tides affect this much. Is it safe at the mouth during low tides? Thanks much

Steve,
I hope you have good fishing in Bay of L.A. They are having much better weather down there this year than last...although water temps dropped from 69 to 63 while I was there.
Punta Chivato sure has changed...apparently someone bought the whole point. they put up a 10' fence with 3 strands of bob-wire on top! There is an entrace area, but no one was there when we went through. They shut off the water, took out the pit toilets (good ridence) and trash barrels...at least there is no charge now! We had the entire beach to ourselves for 5 days!!! It was epic. Each afternoon we would sit on the beach after our morning session with the binocs drinking pacificos, eating fish tacos and looking for working birds. On three afternoons we spotted birds, hopped in the boat and ran out a mile or two to catch 10-15# yellowtail on surface iron. We call it watching TV!
Post a report from your trip.
lat,
steve

This explains the stocking situation.

California Department of Fish and Game News Release
December 11, 2008
Contact: Carrie Wilson, DFG Office of Communications, CalOutdoors@dfg.ca.gov

California Outdoors Q&As: Plenty of Good Fishing Still Awaits
www.dfg.ca.gov/QandA

Question: With this recent lawsuit halting trout stocking in so many of the state’s popular lakes and streams, realistically, how can we now expect to find any quality fishing left anywhere? This situation sounds very bleak for anglers. What is the DFG doing about this, and what’s the best we can now hope for? (Stephanie B.)

Answer: Despite the lawsuit, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) plans to stock at least 771 bodies of water with more than seven million fish this next year! According to Staff Fisheries Biologist Jim Starr, the current suspension in the stocking of hatchery-reared fish in other waters is a court ordered interim measure that will result in DFG not stocking approximately 20 percent (roughly 180 bodies of water) of the waters normally scheduled for stocking in 2009. At DFG, we are aware of the effect this will have on the communities that have come to depend on our fish stocking programs and we don’t want to minimize that effect. DFG is working to identify waters that are currently on the non-stocking list that may qualify to be stocked after further evaluation and consultation with the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

An important point to remember is that just because DFG will not be stocking hatchery-reared fish in a given body of water (which in most cases is someone’s favorite fishing hole), there will still be fish in those waters waiting to latch onto an angler’s lure or fly. Local governments, concessionaires and water body managers that have or may have had a Private Stocking Permit since 2005 to stock these lakes can continue to do so, it’s just that DFG is court ordered not to plant any of our hatchery reared fish in that same body of water, if it is deemed a non-stock water. And, as always, the time shared with family and friends enjoying the outdoors will still be there … not to mention all of the tall tales that will be told about the big one that got away!

Stay tuned to DFG’s Web site for regional information about where, and how much stocking will continue throughout the state.

they stock the lake pavillion in atascadero even though it has sewer lines leaking into it they say they test the bacteria level before they stock but how and were they do they test, all the bad stuff sinks to the bottom ,do they go to the deepest water in lake and test the sediment? of coarse not! and were if the data so we know the fish are safe to eat, insted of writing our governer we should write our local hells angel group for help .

The local lakes will not be stocked this year due to budget shortfalls. If we ran our businesses the way DFn'G runs theirs, the same state would put us in jail.

Bob I disagree with you on the hunting. There are fewer laces to hunt. I haven't bought Deer tags here in years. Because public access is limited to where you get to hunt. And I believe that some areas are a draw for. Example if your liecence is for here you can't go to northern calif to hunt. And I can for see the same thing happening to fishing. We don;t have 1100 to fish due to access plus the new no fish zones. Fresh water there are laces off limits or restrictions. And there are seasons on some of our fish. You are limited to where you can take your boat and some places NO KAYAKS Due to fresh water mussels. WE get less oppertunities and our prices increase I would like to know why the increase and see the money get there before I say something like I'm OK With it. I don't mind paying my way, but want what I ay for. Just Imagine you going into work and TELL your boss today I get a dollar an hour It isn't much of an increasejust a dollar. But that dollar adds u to 8.00 er day 40.00 er week I think you get the picture. So this increase times the amount of fishermen how much money is that and where is it going TO THE STATE BUDGET. It is just an added tax that they will short F&G and now we pay more tax to make up the difference. The tax is hidden by saying we have to increase the fishing lienece fee. JUST MY OPINION.
P.S. then our Limits keep decreasing if their programs work why is the fishery in such bad shape. Question Athority!!

Baja Fish Report:
Just returned from 2+ weeks in Baja. No troubles traveling through N. Baja...just travel during the day (like I always do). Fished 14 days straight. Had good weather most of the time, with about 5 days of El Norte and 10 days of very little wind. We fished between Isla San Marcos and Bahia de Concepcion.

My pa with a nice San Marcos YT.

My buddy Doug with a nice surface leopard grouper (Punta Chivato).

Doug with a nice surface YT (Punta Chivato).

My buddy Peter with his first YT.

Me with a nice San Marcos YT.

I personally don't have a problem paying more for a fishing license in CA compared to anywhere else.... we live in f*@king California!!! we can fish anywhere and anytime in places people in the rest of the country only dream about!! Don't start bitching if you don't take advantage of the freshwater or vice versa.... they can't pro rate a fishing license.

We have alot of waters to fish and also alot of water for the fish and game to enforce and regulate, much less the hunting aspect.
I`m surprised the fees arn`t higher. If you like to fish and need extra funds drop star bucks for a month and one might have enough moneys to pay for a launch on top of the licence fees.

This is out of a San Diego Tribune.

At $41.20, the 2009 California fishing license is nearly double what adjoining states charge their residents yearly. California officials point to tremendous fishing opportunities as a reason for the higher fees, but don't tell that to the angler who exclusively fishes the ocean and not freshwater, or the stream and lake fisherman who wouldn't know a rockfish from a sheepshead.

A 2009 resident sport fishing license will cost $41.20, up from $38.85 last year. And those who want to fish offshore will need an Ocean Enhancement Stamp for $4.75, up from $4.45 last year.

A $2.35 increase in the resident fishing license is about average when compared with rate boosts in recent years. But any increase right now is going to affect anglers in this tough economy.

However, this increase is not close to those assessed on California anglers in the 1980s.

In 1984, the sport fishing license nearly doubled, from $6.75 to $13. And in 1986 it rose from $13.75 to $18.

A check of nearby states shows a vast difference in the cost to fish in California.

Nevada charges residents $29, but also requires juniors 12 to 15 years old to pay $13. Seniors 65 and older pay $13. Members of the military pay $9, and American Indians and disabled veterans fish for free.

California doesn't have a fishing license for juniors. All youngsters 15 and under fish for free.

California has special licenses for residents older than 65 and for disabled veterans, and it also allows some American Indian, disabled, developmently disabled and legally blind anglers to fish for free.

Arizona has some incredible deals, not just for fishermen, but for hunters, too.

An Arizona fishing license costs $23.50, but the state also offers a hunting-fishing combination license for $54.

Arizona takes it to another level by offering residents family packages. A family fishing license in Arizona for a couple and two children younger than 18 costs $69.25 for the year. A family hunting license (a couple and two children younger than 18) costs $88.05. A combination fishing and hunting family license costs $137.20.

Oregon charges $24.75 for a resident fishing license, $6.75 for juniors 14-17 years old and $12 for seniors 70 or older who have lived in Oregon five consecutive years.

A release from the Department of Fish and Game this week points out the many opportunities that fishermen have in California. But does that justify charging high fees to residents?

The DFG release, by Carrie Wilson and Harry Morse, points out that California has more fishing waters than any state. California has 1,100 miles of ocean coastline, 4,172 lakes and reservoirs, 29,664 miles of streams and rivers and 1,800 miles of bay and delta waters.

Wilson has developed the Fishing Passport Program, which offers incentives for people to wander around the state to catch 150 fish and shellfish species. It's like a traveler's passport in that for each successful catch, anglers receive special stamps in their booklets, and they can keep track of the species they catch.

The DFG, despite the recent loss in court over its stocking practices, will plant approximately 7 million rainbow trout next year. Salmon hatcheries will release more than 20 million young salmon.

The bottom line is that California's anglers will decide whether it's all worth $41.20, plus a stamp.

Sandabs - all you want.

20-30 fathoms sandy areas, sabiki bait rig no bait needed or a small jig. Excellent to eat, delicate flavor, fine texture. You can fillet but easier to head & gut then cook and eat like a trout. They don't keep well though. Get fishy in the fridge and mushy in the freezer.

Take some crab pots with you and set on the reefs while you are fishing. Sandabs make good crab bait too.
