Found a great old article from 1978 in Salt Water Sportsman about fishing with plugs (jigs)- "a new rock fishing technique". Virg is being interviewed and gives credit to Bob Gannon for the "discovery" a few years prior. Deckhand Charlie Laninni and Galley girl Rita Gartrell are also credited as first to join in. Bob Gannon Sr. I've been going through and scanning Morro Bay sportfishing history pictures. If anyone has anything you can contribute or can (or know someone who can) help me id people or pictures from the 50's or 60's let me know. The whole project will go up on www.oldmorrobay.com eventually.

That would be great if saltwater if free. More local tournaments would be great, boaters, yakers, and wasn't there a local Perch Tournament in the area? Anyone know when it is?

A lot of people forget that there's a kayak tournament the first Saturday of the season at the Simeon Pier.

Oh yeah and some guy speared a 40# rooster that swam right up to him in the surf, just off a rocky point in low visability. Dragged him around good. Also saw a local riding his bike on Playa Allevenas with a big fish hanging from his bars. I guess the surf fishing is really good and you don't need a fishing license for it.

Had a great trip in Costa Rica. Caught some Costa Rican Perch off sandy Playa Grande. The locals said they're relative to the Snapper, looks like a cross between a Snapper and a Barrie. Went on a Sunset Booze Cruise/Snorkel trip out of Playa Flamingo and they threw on a kayak for me. Caught a bunch of smaller tropical fish and a brilliant colored Snapper called Pargo. The Sailfishing and Tuna are slow due to a cold water current off of Guanacaste. Didn't get a lot of photos, but posted a few my site. All in all it was the perfect vacation of party'n with the locals and relaxation at the beach. The surf was epic too.

I have some pics for CaboDan, sorry it's taken so long. Time for fish tacos.

Marty, I have yak fished quite a bit around here and have been hanging my fish off the side with a home made stringer. The stringer is pretty thin plastic coated cable that is long enough to through my catch up on the deck if the sea dogs start expressing interest. It has worked very well so far. It can be a little tough throughing a limit of rock cod plus a couple lings back on the deck but it can always be done. Those are the kind of fishing problems I like to deal with.

John at cayucos sport fishing has an example of a good yak stringer on his web site.

How are you Kayakers storing your fish on board? I have a 36 inch Kayak fish cooler mounted on the front. The Lings and Reds are so big up at Cape San Martin, It will only hold about 5 fish.Dragging a stringer sounds like a good way to get eaten... ?

I would like to look through the rules of some tournaments, and see how I could make them work in salt water. Plus how the pay out works. I may try to contact companies for prizes other than cash. I know many companies do contribute things. But with the Economy who know what could happen. Then the time of year and type of fish. I would like to chat with you if possible. bille.

Cabo Dan, Great offer on the Tacos for Photos. I was up in Oregon and caught a fish called the Schmuck. It wasn't very long but the girth was immense and smelled from stale beer and had a black eye. If I bring in a picture would you post it,you may have to build a bigger wall. Would that be worth a taco... Gimme a call Dano.

DUNGENESS CRABS !

We went on The Pacific Horizon last saturday out of Patriot Sportfishing for their crab and dab trip. It was a really great trip with with 94 crabs and scads of dabs. The crew, Sal (skipper) and Joe made it a really enjoyable trip. The traps were set on the previous trip so they had a good soak before we got there. Pretty neat watching, with anticipation, as the pot comes up in the exceptionally clean water loaded with crabs.

I brought home 6 crabs and have already eaten two of them and they were delicious. We were going to go again tomorrow but didn't like the sound of 12 ft 12 second swells with both wind and rain to boot. They are going again saturday and I would highly recommend that anyone that likes crab and sand dabs jump on the boat for an enjoyable trip.

If anyone has any question send me an e-mail or give me a call. Again, great trip !!

Went scuba diving with Shawn Stamback slodivers@charter.net on Saturday,we set-up at Virgs dock and were at the spot in 10 min.it was a two tank dive at the 10-E bouy ,the rock structure there was WAY taller and wider than I thought it would be after fishing it all these years.Lots of Blues cruzing the area and the rocks are covered with life,if your looking to check out the local diving area, I can recommend Shawns' operation without hesitation.

Bloody decks forever!!

My wife is always commenting on the fact that I have way more pictures of myself with fish than with her. Too bad it's only one meal per customer, or I could eat at your place for life. Thanks for the generous offer, I will be by sometime soon. I am so glad someone else appreciates fish pictures!

just to let you know , i do tournament bass fishing , every bass is released alive. that is part of the tournament regulations and permit that states we have to return the fish alive . i have been doing tournaments for the past 10 years and have been practicing catch and release for longer. the death rate is very low. we have maybe 1 dead fish a year for the club i fish. you get dock weight for each dead fish.. and no they were not white bass, naci is knowen for 100 fish days. if it was white bass, when they are running it could easy break 200 fish a day...

I was wondering what it takes to run a tournament . Just thinking about a fund raiser of sort. Where can I find the information that I would need, Like what are reasonable fees to make it work. I'm just in the thinking stage. And hope I can make the event tax deductible. Plus would there be any interest here.

Down rigger cannon ball 18 inch leader to a small flasher, Dodger 18 inch leader to a purple haze hoochie.
alot like salmon but on the bottom.
Depth? Where ever they are, the bigger the swell the deeper they go and visa versa

How deep? I was out last week with the Fiesta, just bored fishing sandabs, drifted over a rock and the blues were so thick we couldn't even get to the bottom. To bad the feds say there are none left this year. Not to worry, in two years there will be huge 3-4 pounders and they will take all the credit for saving them in this management cycle. (Never mind they are ten year old fish.) Anyway was thinking about slow trolling for halibut. How deep? How fast and what with?

Dan - I am going through all the old photos since Vrig started in 1954. I have some incredible hisory photos, white sea bass, huge salmon and of course rockfish/lings. Come by and take your pic for the store.

Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch?

Hey everyone, I have enjoyed fishing the Central Coast for over 40 years and continue to do so when the government allows me too... I am a daily reader of this page and really enjoy your fishing reports and discussions.

I would like to invite all of you to bring in your favorite fish pictures which I will proudly display on my bragging walls here in San Luis at Cabo San Luis restaurant. I have many of your pictures already about 25 so far but would like to cover an entire wall with local fishermen.

A free Dos Pescados lunch with our tasty fish tacos will be traded to anyone bringing in a worthy fishing picture. (bring in more than one good picture if you want, one free lunch per person though) Pictures can be regular photo size or as large as 8.5 X 11", or larger if there real good!

Thanks, happy fishing.

More bad news for West Coast salmon
Associated Press
Published - February 26. 2009
West Coast salmon fishermen can expect another lousy fishing season -- the third in a row. The Pacific Fishery Management Council said Wednesday that there are barely enough chinook returning to California's Sacramento River to spawn a new generation. That will likely mean no sport or commercial salmon fishing off California and little off Oregon, for fear of
unintentionally killing too many Sacramento fish swimming with more prevalent stocks, said Chuck Tracy, head of the salmon section for the Portland-based council. Even so, returns are forecast to be some of the best ever for coho and chinook returning to Oregon and Washington
rivers, particularly the Columbia, which will mean a general improvement in fishing north of Cape Falcon on the northern Oregon Coast and into Washington. "The only comfort is it's an upward trend, but not upward enough this year to expect anything but closures all the way
up to Cape Falcon," said Glen Spain of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations, which represents California-based salmon fishermen.
Ocean seasons were generous in 2007, but the catch was poor. In 2008, the seasons were practically shut down coastwide for fear of wiping out the Sacramento chinook run after it took a sudden drop. Both years Congress voted disaster assistance to salmon fishermen. California has traditionally had the biggest fleet, followed by Oregon and
then Washington. The average economic impact of the fishery dramatically dropped from $66 million (€51.7 million) between 2003 and 2007 to $6.9 million (€5.4 million) in 2008. Last year's collapse was blamed primarily on poor ocean conditions producing little for salmon to eat. Fishermen and
conservation groups also pointed to large irrigation withdrawals from the Sacramento Delta as juvenile salmon were migrating to the ocean in 2005 and 2006. Scientists have said a switch in climatic conditions in recent years has produced more food in the ocean, setting up more abundant salmon returns in 2010. In coming decades, salmon are expected to have it tougher, as warming temperatures reduce the amount of water
stored in mountain snowpacks, diminishing flows in rivers where salmon spend the first part of their lives.
A draft report on 41 potential factors in the Sacramento decline is to be delivered to the council in April, when it meets in Milbrae, Calif., to set the final ocean salmon seasons. Actual returns regularly fall short of forecasts, but this year's prediction for the Sacramento calls for 122,196 salmon
if none are caught by fishermen, 196 more than the minimum for spawning a new generation. The Klamath River forecast was also up, but marked the fourth straight year below what is needed for a new generation. Low returns to the Klamath have been a perennial headache for fisheries managers due to dams, logging and poor water quality. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., said he would work to see that any leftover 2008 disaster assistance is made available to fishermen.

Captain Dave,
Hey, I didn't say the water was bad. The levels of mercury are very low in the water, so it does not affect you when you swim or even if you drank the water. That is why only the higher predator fish are bad to eat, because the higher you are in the food web the more these toxic chemicals concentrate in the tissues of the organism. This is why crappie is ok, because they feed lower in the food chain (they eat small fish, but also zooplankton, insects, etc.). I used to eat crappie from there back in high school, but I probably wouldn't anymore. Mercury is scary stuff...it never goes away in your body!!!
You are right, the only native fish in there is a trout and maybe northern pikeminnow (aka squawfish) and perhaps dace or sculpin. That is why folks shouldn't worry if you C & R or kill your limit. I believe the reason why they wanted you to kill white bass IF you kept them was to prevent folks from planting them in other lakes. There is a stiff fine if you have one alive in your livewell!
best fishes,
steve

Steve, that`s the DFG`s CYA message. If it were that dangerous Heritage Ranch would be a ghost town. People here have been eating those fish for years. Tell me Steve what kind of fish is native to a man made lake. The only fish native to this lake would be trout from the Naci river. There are trout here. Time to eat my pound of carp, yuck.

Blackie,
You are not supposed to eat any white bass or black bass (spotted, largemouth, or smallmouth) from Naci. As long as you are not pregnant, of child bearing age, breast feeding or a kid < 17, you can (supposedly) eat 1 pound per week of catfish, carp or sunfish (bluegill or crappie).
There are two old abandoned mercury mines in the basin that leach mercury into the lake...at which point it bioaccumulates into the flesh of the higher predators! There is no problem with C & R of bass...on artificial lures they have less than 5% mortality! Plus they are non-native.
later,
steve

Thanks I'm not misinformed, just I know that F&G would rather you kill them. Back in the 80's at one time there was a proposal to kill the lake to get rid of the white bass. I was just stating to catch 100 bass in one day at that lake they must be whites. If Not I need some lessons for the lake. Probably do anyway.

It`s not uncommon, I`m glad to see them biting like that again. Last year was not too good only 20-30 fish days and not the great surface bite of 2 yrs ago. It can be a fish a cast. Of course condidions dictate everything.

Bob May and Jeff Horton, you are both misinformed about Lake Naci.
1-You don`t have to kill white bass unless you are keeping them
2-White bass aren`t biting this time of year.
3-Most of us that fish here practice catch and release.
4- It`s not uncommon to have 100 fish days. These are hardy fish and seldom die.
5-Spotted bass have taken over this lake.
Bass Attack did nothing wrong, this lake is loaded with fish.

A sport fishing friend of mine had a great idea on ocean fishing that could possibly increase sport limits.
If it was requiered to keep the first 10 12 fish that were brought on board reguardless of species, it would cut waste and catching bigger fish and throwing back the smaller dead for more weight or whatever.

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb. 13, 2009

New Dates For Free Fishing Day -- Fourth of July and Labor Day

David Moore, Interpretive Services Supervisor, DFG Bay Delta Region,

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) today announced new dates for
Free Fishing Day in 2009. Free Fishing Days will be the Fourth of July
and Labor Day, Sept. 7 when DFG will waive the license requirement for
citizens 16 or older. On those days people will have the opportunity to
fish on all freshwater and ocean waters in California.

“There are fish in many California waterways and urban lakes that can
make a very fun day for beginning anglers and experienced hands
alike,” said David Moore, DFG Interpretive Services Supervisor.
“For those out camping near rivers or recreating at some of our
state’s large reservoirs, Free Fishing Day on both the Fourth of July
and Labor Day offers a great opportunity for families to enjoy a
hands-on experience with nature."

All other fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear
restrictions, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. On
Free Fishing Days, anglers also must have the appropriate report card if
they are fishing for salmon in the Klamath-Trinity River System, or for
abalone, steelhead, sturgeon or spiny lobster.

The state features more than 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 4,172
lakes and reservoirs and 80 major rivers. It also has more than 1,100
miles of coastline and hundreds of native fish and shell fish species.

DFG offers several fishing-related programs designed to help people
enjoy one of the nation’s most popular outdoor sports.

For novice anglers, DFG offers Fishing in the City, part of the Urban
Fishing Program. Since 1993, Fishing in the City has provided fishing
opportunities to Californians living in the Sacramento, San Francisco
and Los Angeles metropolitan areas. Fishing in the City clinics teach
youths how to fish and provide an opportunity to fish close to home. DFG
stocks dozens of ponds with trout in winter and catfish the rest of the
year. More information is available at
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fishinginthecity/index.html.

Free Fishing Day can also introduce anglers to DFG’s new fishing
incentive and angler recognition program called the California Fishing
Passport program. The Passport program is for people of all ages and
skill levels. Anglers are encouraged to catch all of the different sport
fish species in the state and can use the passport booklet as a guide.
More than 150 of the most commonly caught species of freshwater fish,
saltwater fish and shellfish species found in California are included as
part of the Passport Challenge. More information is available at
www.fishingpassport.org.
