Hey guys, just a quick one- We'll be opening the launch @ 5:30 all week. Deke has been lookin for bait but, not enough concentrated for a set. Hopefully soon!! The Harbor Dist. asked me to tell any of you that are interested how deep the launch is, Go to www.portsanluis.com and hit the tides and soundings link. They have been dredging all week so it's actually deeper than it says now. They will be sounding the area often. Should be a great weekend. Marty |

We usually have a pretty nice dinner, with tunes, cocktails etc. We'll look for you on Fri. night. Look for the "Spirit of San Luis". Saturday we plan to do a lot of "scouting" for good numbers ... Weather supposed to kick up again starting Saturday afternoon. Hope we are on our way to the barn by then ... Mel |

Mike Moore 'I bought a bottle of Collinite wax at West Marine in Santa Barbara recently and put it on a small area to try it out. It feels like it is way smoother than other waxes. It is pricey 20 bucks or so. Going to be good to go fishing again at PSL. |

Went Ab Diving this weekend out of Albion, Mendocino County. Very windy and rough, but lots of 8" plus Reds. Stayed at Seafoam Lodge, Little River, Dennis Smith owner. Ocean views. Very fisher, diver, pet friendly. On way home hit Ab check station. Five wardens, Sheriff, CHP and Ab sniffing dog. The ink had run on our tags from the water and slime in our ice chest, so cited for an infraction. Warden advised us to experiment with pens to find one that resists Ab slime. Oh well, check your tags before you hit the road. |

i fished this morning around the 10-e. couldn't find the squid and the water is very dirty. big plankton bloom. little spots of fin bait around. water was 52. looks like the weather is coming down for the weekend. that was a sailboat up on the beach this morning. a big one too. looks like they had to demolish it to clean it up. too bad, looked to be a nice ride. |

Anyone use Collinettes boat wax? Heard it's among the best. No signs yet of albies down below but pretty good signal on seabass at the islands prior to this blow. Mostly schoolies but some 50-plus models at Catalina. Water still pretty cold. |

Carl--CTDyck--IMHO, a day on the big pond is a perfect way to waste time. Naturally tho, the place not to waste time is at the dock either going in or coming out. And there always seems to be a few, old salts included, that forget the plug in the excitement of gettin' back on the water. so with that said, have a good time out there, be prepared with all required Coast Guard safeties (including a check of the date on your flares), don't forget the plug. In my 30+ years launching round here, the CG seems to do a lot of boardings in the early season for that very reason-check safeties. Al McVey--remember a few years back guys fishing (trolling) Hali down by the Coke Plant had a serious run on the WSB. Seems to me, like all fishing the trick is being in the right place/right time/right gear. In that case it was hootchies over chovies on trap rigs, behind small chrome dodgers, fished right on the sandy bottom. BTW, We've caught WSB shorts (released of course) at Pea Patch, SR Reef and inside SLO Bay drifting straight live baits on Hali rigs too. And, a few large dead WSB have been found inside the SLO Bay over the years. Cloud out |

Six people rescued from a sinking boat off Cambria Sunday April 27, 2009 08:16 AM Sunday, April 26, 2009 Reported by: Jimena Martinez The Coast Guard was called out to rescue six people stranded on a sinking boat. Morro Bay Coast Guard received reports of a boat filling up with water late Sunday afternoon, about 15 miles northwest off the coast of Morro Bay, near Cambria. Morro Bay and Los Angeles Coast Guard sent out lifeboats and helicopters. After about three and a half hours the Coast Guard was able to rescue all six people. There were no injuries. An investigation is underway to find out what caused the 65 foot boat to start sinking |

Wow!! AL... That seems like an easy question. Im not an authority on this, very few are. But I have caught seabass while actually in persuit of seabass... I can only give you a few pieces of wisdom ( read shear Friggin madness. )OK Here goes... Yes they really like squid and are usually not far away...They call them grey ghosts because its common to catch them at first light...Moon is everything,... a day or two before and after the full moon is usually when thier caught w/any consistancy... They like alot of current...A squid or two on a wihite candy bar has caught many... I usually use the old sliding egg sinker rig w/red beads just like halibut fishing, it not un common to catch them while hallibut fishing... 100 ft or less works... Not really a troll fish...I take that back there used to be two old guys that used to bounce ball of gaviota state in thier old glasspar who allways had huge halibut and SB... Structure, sand, kelp, shallow green water, bait and patience might get you into one...When you set the hook and feel a big PULL BACK...you just might have a SB... That should be about as clear as mud... GOOD LUCK!!! |

What are the methods for catching white sea bass? I know they like squid, but can you fish them on the troll or with jigs? Do they have depth and temperature preferences? Thanks, Al |

Gang: With rockfish season almost upon us, thought I'd offer up some info in no particular order. Mechanical failures in boats are about 90% either electrical or fuel related. Keep both systems happy and you'll eliminate nearly all the problems. Before even planning a trip on the ocean, make sure your boat is in seaworthy condition, especially if it's been sitting most of the winter. Personally, I try to run my boat's motor in the driveway off-season at least once a month, preferably twice. For those of you who have no off-season, I'm jealous. If your gasoline fuel has been sitting in the tanks all winter, even if you added Stabil or some other preservative before parking it, before you head out top-off with some fresh gas. If you're running diesel be sure to treat with proper amounts of biocide year-round. Change your fuel filter, even it only has minimal hours on it as a bad or old filter can be the root of many problems. Ask me how I know. Check your batteries and electrical system. I did just that this weekend and found that one of my relatively new sealed deep-cycle batteries is dead, kaput. Pull apart all your battery connections, clean all the terminals including the battery posts and make everything bright and shiny. Then apply a conductive grease or paste to everything as you put it back together. Ditto all your terminal blocks that are subject to the elements. 95% of all electrical problems can be traced to bad battery and terminal connections. Ask me how I know. Stick your head in every hole and use a mechanic's mirror on a stick to check all your wiring runs and hidden areas. Mice and other rodents have a habit of bunking down in boats and chewing on the wiring, creating all sorts of strange and un-traceable electrical problems. Ask me how I know. If you have any kind of hydraulic steering, check all the reservoirs. Seals sometimes have a nasty habit of drying up if they sit around without use and are not exercised, thus letting the fluid seep away often unseen. On outboards and outdrives, check and/or change the lower end oil, as the prop shaft seal can be subject to the same issue. Pull your prop once in awhile and re-grease the spline. Also change the cotter pin when doing so, DON'T reuse the old one otherwise your prop might part company with the boat next time you shift into reverse. Ask me how I know. Check all your safety gear. Make sure your flares are up to date. I can't possibly go down the entire list here, but feel free to call either Morro Bay or Port San Luis Harbor Patrol and ask for advice. While there is a list of safety gear required by law, there is a much more extensive list of prudent gear that every boat owner should carry. The bottom line is be prepared to self-rescue in all foreseeable instances. But equally important is to know when to swallow your pride, check your ego, and call for help. Ask me how I know. ALWAYS check the weather and sea conditions before departing. Conditions can change by the hour from great to deadly. Look at last week - Monday and Tuesday were in the 90's in Morro Bay, then Wednesday on were a full-on blow. Be prepared. Always use local knowledge whether it be friends, the harbor patrols, or the Coast Guard. If in doubt, CALL! Have patience at the launch ramp. Take your turn whether launching or retrieving. When launching, get your boat in the water and walk it out to the end of the dock so the next guy can launch while you are parking your truck. If you have engine problems after launching, walk your boat around to the other side of the dock if there is space to get out of the way. When retrieving, try to have your truck ready to go when the boat gets to the dock - avoid docking then having to make a 15 minute circuit for the truck if you can. Until we get a separate kayak launch spot (some years away at this point), be prepared to have them in the mix. Instead of blowing up at them when they dawdle in the launch lanes, kindly suggest that they use the middle lane in Morro Bay. Except for a few brave souls (yes, I'm talking about you Harold Davis), the center lane is rarely used by trailer boaters and is always available for the paddle folk but they just don't realize that space is useable. Last, don't forget to put the plug back in. Ask me how I know... Eric Endersby Harbor Operations Manager Morro Bay Harbor Patrol |

Cracka, not much in the bay right now. There is some in the back I heard but not a lot. There is squid outside of the entrance. Rumors of a 50lb white seabass yesterday but no visuals so I have to think is is just that (a rumor). Plus the h2o is a little chilly for those guys. |

Paul Parking lot is tight but, should be ok. We'll have harbor patrol help with the parking. Should you decide to go on a mooring, they are $6.00 per nite and you can park your trailer up on the hill at no charge. The hill is the area up by the boat storage. It's probably going to be pretty busy opening weekend so for any guys wanting to go out to the moorings early I'll start running the taxi when we start launching around 5:30 Marty |

bill miller yes i use it and its great. use it on your deck(fiberglass) and it makes clean up a breeze. its a non silicone base so its not slippery so use it on everything. great on metal as it gets rid of water stains and corrosion. if your metal has heavy pits use a brass wool along with woodys and the shine will come out. be sure to buy the metal conditioer along with it. i order it from jerry down here in morro bay and yes it is pricey but a least you dont pay shipping. the product has saved me from houres of cleaning after pulling some lips and i highly recomend it. |

Has anyone tried Woody's Wax - I've seen it advertised for the last couple of months, mostly in WON, but I've never found it on the shelf or anyone that has used it. It's fairly pricy, but if it refinishes metal as it claims, then it would be worth it. |

Tim- Launch cards are pre bought launches. You buy 9 launches and get one free. It's a punchcard you keep in your wallet or I can keep it on file. I do it several fishermen that like to lose them. We don't sell a whole lot during the year but, quite a few at Christmas time. Marty |

i ran up to cambria early this morning to take a look around where the light boats were set-up the last couple of days. not enough business for those guys so they took off. that area is holding lots of squid though. i easily made 30- 40 pieces of squid and drifted from little pico down to san simeon creek inside about 60' out to 100' very large area of working birds. looked pretty good. water was 56ish. i gotta believe some c-bass will show up sooner or later. i headed down to villa creek with the rest of my bait to drift for flatties but the water is very dirty. more suited for salmon. took a look at cayucos. it was a bit cleaner but no biters. metered some fin bait around and there looks to be some bait moving into the bay. didn't really expect much today, but chance favors a prepared mind. |

I prefer to launch the Whaler Conquest there at Port and made the significant changes to the original trailer bunks to make it easy on you guys so I hope to take advantage of your new hours. Could you please elaborate on the "Launch Card" that John spoke of? Is it something us frequent users can take advantage of? |

Britt Tides are good in the morning early. There is a -0.6 @ 10:48am but unless you draw 3+ feet you will not have a prob. We are going to open at 5:30 and close when the last boat comes in or 1/2 hour before dark (around 7:00pm) -Marty |

Al--thanks, I hope they sell "compliant" dip nets at the marinas. Maybe I'll need to consult my attorney if I do decide to catch some shad. Beware the Bronzespotted rockfish Cloud out |

Saw the squid boats working off San Simeon tonight after working at the Castle. Any reports of WSB? It looked like a day we dream about out there, warm and flat. |

Cloud, It was dip net only when I was up there two years ago Ray. I don't think you can use cast nets in fresh water. There are usually big schools of shad around both the north and south launch areas. Al |

I went surfing at Pismo on saturday and saw some great signs outside. Despite super cold water conditions there were a lot of birds working bait about a half mile off the pier. I'm sure that there were salmon pushing the bait up out there. What a beautiful weekend at the beach! wILL |

Decided to take the boat for a shake down cruise to Margarita...Jack broke so off to NAPA...removed old jack and tossed it...It landed up against a small tree full of bees...Sprinted to my truck without getting stung..came back in an hour, Bees were gone so I uncovered the tires to find two flats...Finally made it to the lake to find some minor electrical problems (wash down pump and live well)blown fuses.... A lot of drama for an hour on the water |

Greg thanks for the info. We haven't made up our minds and will probably paddle out wherever the conditions look best. Pt. Dume in Malibu sounds like a popular spot. |

Interested in any striper reports from San Antonio--anyone been lately; whasup? What are the regs on getting shad for bait? As I recall it was dip-net only years ago (haven't been in a long time). Thanks, Cloud out. |

Johnny, Forget Refugio unless you are targeting flatties. It looks good but all that kelp is attached to a structureless table-flat hard bottom. Naples is better, or even Malibu. Rockfishing south of Conception isn't anything like it is up here though. I'm kind of surprised that the get such a long season down there considering how few rockies their appear to be. |

it's a shame ....the catfish, sunfish, and others cruise the spawning grounds waiting for a nest to raid...it only takes minutes..less time than it takes to hook ,land, and release a fish...bed fishing is legal, but it's a shame and nothing to brag or teach others about |

My sons fish report, santa margarita 4/17 we started out throwing luers at the bank and and got one 2# bass off a popper went to a cove and beached the boat, we don`t need no stinkin` boat. In this cove we could see females on the nest and males chillin on the out side. so we sitecasted from the bank and bam they were feisty and ready for a fight. all released, biggest 4#, lost huge fishes spooled and all. should have brought 50# test. one of them was at least 24" jumping out the water, kinda like bass masters .catfish were cruising the beds. they are hot and ready to go. but as we did we practiced catch and realease to protect the fish population. fun fishin` ryan out |

Seawead I checked out the site and read a ton of posts. Sounds like the rockfishing sucks south of Point Conception. People mostly target Halibut and Threshers. |

Does anyone know of any great kayak fishing spots south of Point Conception? We're thinking of paddling out Monday morning near Naples Reef or Refugio, but we are open to any suggestions. The Yak Pack! www.CayucosSportfishing.com |

Chip, please don't tell people how fun sight or bed fishing is,I want all that fishing for my friends & myself. I take issue with people criticizing me, for the way, where, when, and for what I fish for, if it's legal. With the government endorsed and enforced, exorbitant fees and laws and misguided use of revenues collected from sportsman, misuse of sound science or adoption of unsupported junk science as fact. Blatant support by MBARI officials to further their own agendas and pocketbooks at the expense of any person or group (read fishermen) in there way. Pardon the pun, there are bigger fish to fry then someone fishing, catching, or eating a LMB. My family and I love to eat fresh fish, including LMB (or smoked YT or canned tuna from John and Sharon, ummm tasty!)and will forever continue to do so. That being said, I release over 95% of the fresh water fish I catch. This should be a non issue with fishermen. Maybe we as fishermen can worry about other stuff....such as: 1. Fishery policy makers in bed with environmental whackos. 2. Media that turns a blind eye to truth regarding fishing, hunting, trapping, off road use, and too often portrays us as enemy of the environment or resources that we love. 3. Landings, captains & crew, boat & tackle manufacturers, restaurants, so on and so forth losing income or their business because of ill founded policies. 4. Destruction or selling of our resources by the governor, blue ribbon task force, DFG, etc, etc,(peripheral canal, MPA's, and fish kill on the Delta.) 5. Unchecked destruction by marine mammmals. 6. Kids being brainwashed into believing fishing and hunting are wrong. Oh, I also think fly fishing only areas on rivers and streams suck too. Dave, sell me all your tackle and I won't keep the bass I catch on it! Ha Ha! ;) Jeff |

All the b.s. about this guy being against bedding bass and that guy for it if the fish are released quickly to return to the bed is about a joke. I know many of you (and me) were out at Villa last year when those big halibut were coming into spawn. We caught our share and kept them and ate them. We also kept rockfish that were pregnant and ate them. So what gives that makes this any different. Site fishing is fun. It's not cheating unless their is some lake rule or law. I site fish for doroado all the time in Mexico and for roosters in the surf. So what. |

We stayed at Avila this weekend Wife spotted a person come in with a broken Ab shell about 10 to 12 inch in diameter. I bet an otter got it. As far as the fresh water talk, Isn't there a fresh water area in this site. If it was used maybe some of the B.S. might stop. Just a suggestion but thought that is why there are two sections. |

Hello Everyone, Boy there sure is alote of talk about bed fishing bass. I heard a rumor that our season was being held for opening until June 13th. Is this true? Also on the hush there have been quite a bit of Halibut, caught this season so far. Another rumor, anyone feel like sharing? Best regards, BBQ. |
