Tuna water heading our way ??SST

Looks like we have some pretty good albacore water heading our way. 58 degree as close as 130 miles and pretty clean. Had to downsize the resolution to post but if anyone wants the "big" picture send me an email and I will send you the full resolution image. I will put together a mailing list and send updated images periodically. Fingers crossed that this will be our year !!

Jeff - I've been diong it that way for over 25 years and never had a problem. Like I said the technique I use is not for the tourists or those who don't drive a boat well. Especially those who don't pay attention. Do be carefull but if you know what you're doing, it works great and you don't have the parking issues at the ramp either. Even when I use the sides I do the same routine.

Evening Guys-n-Gals
Last couple days we got a handfull of boats out
with 1/2 to 3/4 limits, to the guys that braved the wind. Had a half dozen Lings and a Halibut.
We'll be at the launch at 5:30

Matt- What Darby explained about the trim tab
was spot on. If it is still acting the same
call me at the launch and I'll see if I can help
you out.

1st thing guys sorry about my spelling and punctuation but a couple things as far as safety and launching ,it was a couple years ago during salmon season a father launched the boat and went to park the trailer ,he left his i would say 12 yr old son and his friend to watch the boat ,it was tied up to the south dock at the launch ramp ,well as dad was parking the truck the son thought he would do dad a favor and warm the boat up ,well dad had just filled up at the gas station and the boat was an i/o ,need i say more , blew the hatch right off and the boat caught fire somewhere but we couldnt tell where ,lesson 1 always remember to use the blower to get rid of the fumes , well the kid used there fire extenguisher but i guess it wasnt big enough so we tossed him ours ,lesson 2 ,always check to make sure you fire extenguisher is up to date ,as you guessed it ours was dead ,so theres 2 important lessons i will remember forever and yes we did call 911

A good idea is to start your boat as soon as your engine will pick up water. This is usually before you are past the point of no return. Coordinate with your driver.

Mike Very Good Point I think they will just go around to each area until fishing is shut down.

Darby That current you have there is real strong. One year I was with a person whom didn't pay attention which way the current was going . at the time I weighed 135 lbs he had a 28 ft Skip Jack. I was asked to hold both front and rear lines. While the third member parked the truck. Member number one was in boat starting it. I had to let go of one line because It was pulling me off dock. He was pissd I let go. But if I fell in, the whole thing would have went. It worked out in the end. I think the most important thing if you launch in the center is will your boat start right away. If not use the dock down current side. Just my opinion seeing many people who don't start the boat at home or wash area before they launch. Just my opinion.

Charles do not sound so happy, this is how they work. They get their foot in the door and just keep working on it.They will have the whole ocean closed to evrything but picture taking. That is why we must fight for Southern Cal as much as we fight for our area!

Carl Moore ... and others:

As you know the MLPA process has been a horrible experience for commercial and recreational fishermen. The anti-fishing environmental groups, such as the Packard Foundation, RLFF, NRDC, and Monterey Bay Acquarium have been running rough-shot over fishing rights.

One of the key hacks for the environmental groups is a member of the Fish & Game Commission, MICHAEL SUTTON.

If you go to RightToFish.com you can view the Complaint the CCFCC has filed with the Fair Political Practices Commission. This is great reading. Our lawyer did a fabulous job of research on this issue.

Mr. Sutton should resign from the Commission.

Ok, just one more. "Boat launch tips you may already know." Get side rails on your trailer and riser posts on the back end of it. With the side rails, all you have to do is get the bow in the “slot” and the rest of the boat follows. Mount your tail lights on the risers so they will never go in the water again and fairwell tail light corrosion issues. The risers posts also allow you to always easily see the empty trailer as it disappears beneath your tailgate when backing down the ramp.

Now that’s done, you can use the middle slot at the MB launch ramp while all the tourists are waiting in a long line for the sides. They need to use the dock, or the “down hill” side because of the tidal current. But you can put your buddy and gear in the boat and unhook, (If you’re smart it’s his boat) then back him down in the middle slot. He backs off and leaves. You park the truck in the lot across from GAFCO pick up any last minute bait or stuff at Virg’s and he picks you up on the dock. On the way in he drops you off, pick up some burgers at Lil’ Hut, meet him at the launch ramp middle slot where he drives the boat right on the trailer because no one uses the middle slot. Pull forward a bit so the boat is on the trailer and he can raise the out drive, pull to the cleaning station to tie down the boat. Letting your buddy off the boat is optional. Again, no waiting. You do need to know how to drive a boat but as long as you can get to the trailer, the side rails will guide you on every time. If the back end of the side rails are under the waterline, the riser posts indicate where they are. OK, no more posts from me – tonight.

Little boats are not my forte' but here’s my $.02. If your engine does not have power steering then most likely you have a trim fin (torque tab) out of adjustment. This is the little fin that extends below the cavitation plate. Do you see that? It is designed to counteract prop torque. It is usually adjusted with a 3/8" allan wrench through the little hole above it. The rule of thumb is if the boat pulls right, then you move it to the right. It will take a few small adjustments and test runs to get it right.

With power steering: Normally, the power steering will "hold" the drive in place and not allow prop torque to steer the drive. If your power steering is not working properly (out of fluid perhaps) then prop torque will take over. When the boat is at the dock with the motor running, is the steering easier one way compared to the other? If that doesn't help, see Marty!

I was once fishing on the princess with capt Rita and saw what I think was a whale shark. It glided under the boat several times and it had a huge gapping mouth open. At the time i thought" we need a bigger boat". Anyone know the difference between a whale shark and a basking shark? Are sightings common up there?

Gang:

Regarding the 3 or 4 parallel parking spots in Morro Bay along the fence just outside the regular launch ramp parking lot, our maintenance guys had a look at it today, and it looks like we are going to try again to squeeze a few spots out of it.

There will be two spaces a little over 60 feet long, and one space about 35 or so feet long. The catch is, there will still be NO PARKING IN FRONT OF THE ROLLING ACCESS GATES ALONG THE FENCE. We will mark the ground with red along the gates, and white hash marks where the parking limits will be. We'll also renew the signs. This, along with the painted ground will hopefully solve the gate blockage problem and open up a few precious spaces where every little bit helps.

But everybody needs to do their part in keeping the gates clear or we will be right back where we started! Thanks.

Fished yesterday with VIRGS , boy what a differance , im spoiled , there aint nothing like your OWN boat , but I also like the PERCS , they clean your fish and you don,t have to wash the boat , you come in and walk off with a bag of fish.
See ya on the water .

I tell you that it does make a difference to get up to the Cape San Martin area. There are fish on pretty much every rockpile. You can just fish outside the kelp anywhere the bottom is lumpy and catch fish like crazy. Some huge halibut also near the rock/sand interfaces. I am a real olive (Johnny bass) fan and they are thick up there. Also, some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere on Earth. We are fortunate to have such a cool place nearby. If it were closer it would not be as pristine.

Everyone, I have visited several harbors over the years and have to say I think we have the best harbor department on the coast! Any other would just write a ticket. I have a few to prove it. Do all you can to support them and let everyone know the best places to park if you see them. Especially our visitors that may not know their way around. If they have a good experience, they may come back and that's good for all of us in the lr.

When I go out I park across the steet from GAFCO. Virg's docks usually start to open up around 6:30 and will be open at least until about 2pm. If it's open feel free to use it just don't go far if it's after 2pm. You can load at the bait dock too all day long. We'll have some room on the bait dock this year too so you won't have to side tie to the Billy Boy to get bait. Great opener, glad to be fishing again! Have a great season!!

Gang:

A few of you might have gotten parking warnings in Morro Bay around the ramp last Friday, Saturday, or Sunday from the Harbor Patrol. Here is the deal:

The 3 or 4 parallel parking spots along the road just outside of the launch ramp parking lot proper, along the fence before you get to the rinse down station, are posted "no parking" for the entire length. This is because the upland land owners behind the fence all have large rolling gates that they have a right of access to, and with trucks/trailers all along the fence, they lose that access. Is it a major issue every time their gates are blocked? No, but it occurs often enough that we've had to restrict parking all along there. We've tried to just post "no parking" in front of the gates-only over the years, but invariably some people don't get it and block the gates.

The second place that we had to issue some warnings was in the parking lot just past the rinse down station, next to the Embarcadero Inn hotel. While there are 4 long parking spaces in the southern end of the lot for trucks/trailers, the rest of the lot is marked for single vehicles only and we had a number of truck/trailer rigs parked in the lot helter-skelter and taking out a lot of useable space. That the car show was last weekend only made matters worse, as the whole town was packed and parking was at a premium.

Last, we had to issue a few warnings to people that parked one or two rigs beyond the end of a normal row in the regular lot, where the painted semi-circle end marks are. While one vehicle may be no big deal provided it is a very short rig, invariably the next guy comes along and thinks this is OK and does the same thing. Before you know it, we're getting calls from people that have parked properly who can't get their rigs by because the corners have been cut by these end parkers.

So what to do? Truck/trailer parking is obviously limited. Please mind the parking laws, signs, and marks. They are not there just because, they are there because of hard-learned experience. For overflow after the normal lot is full, and the four spaces just past the rinse down are full, we have the following suggestions:

1. 2-3 more rigs can fit in the parallel spaces across the street and a little north of the rinse down station. That is, if there are no regular vehicles already there.

2. Get up above on Olive and Morro or thereabouts, then take the staircase up/down that goes up the bluff across from Tidelands Park. Pick-up/drop your truck driver at Tidelands dock. This also gets your boat quickly out of the way at the ramp docks since you're heading down to Tidelands.

3. Park in the big lot across the street from the Great American Fish Co. and south T-Pier. There is generally alot of truck/trailer/RV space there except on the most crowded weekends. This will only work with 2 or more fishermen, though. Launch boat, truck driver heads up the road, parks, and meets boat on its way by. Heading in, boat drops truck driver, boat gets to ramp and truck is already there and ready to go; pretty slick. Drop and pick up spots can be our Harbor Patrol dock, Virg's if you need to stop there and get bait or tackle, supplies, etc., or on either north or south T-Piers alongside another vessel.

Sounds like the opener was a good one all around. Thanks all for your patience and understanding.

Cracka, never drive over fish to catch fish, There are plenty of fish to catch between Morro and San Simeon. Taylor Freeland taught me to fish where they live, not where the landing wanted me to fish. Turn on your meter and find them.

Greetings,
Fished PSL yesterday in the skiff. Drifted for halibut again, but no love. Got a few rockfish, 2 short lings and a keeper cab. Pretty slow compared to Friday.
Nice work on the Flattie Steve. Good sign for a productive halibut season:-)
We are having a huge plankton bloom. With all the wind we've been having, there has been a ton of upwelling (hence 49.3 water I recorded on Friday)...now with the longer days there is plenty of light for the plankton to grow. We had very poor vis around PSL too. Makes for good ocean conditions...lots of bait to follow!
best fishes,
steve

Tried spearfishing around the kelp beds by Cayucos Saturday. 3 gophers, 1 black bass, and 1 perch. The visibility was terrible. Does anyone know what is causing it? It looks like billions of tiny green objects. We also fished a little. 1 black and hooked and lost a ling.

Question, What factors determine if its worth running to Ragged Point and beyond. wind/waves..
It just does not seem worth fishing unless you go the distance...any advice?

fished san simion area for rockfish and got slammed on a shrimfly ganion. the fish fought me tooth and nails and thought i had a white sea bass. when it got too the surface i couldnt belive it. the fish had slapped the fly and buried the hook right under the gill plates solid. i grabbed the gaff from my friend and nailed and up over the rail came a 45# halibut. think i might check out that area on tuesday with live bait. 145 feet deep in clean water.

Blackie I also use the braid jigs the seafox and braid also makes one called the squid thumper both are lucanus like. I bought mine off E-bay and after shipping was alot cheaper than the lucanus. If I remember they were $5-$6 after said and done. Check it out it might be worth it.

Looks like everyone had a great opening day/weekend. That’s great. We had such an amazing opening weekend. Ran to Port on Friday at 5:30 to find 15 boats ahead of me, got in the water ran to purisma calm seas, about 15 other boats down there most seemed to be working way south of me, fished some of my favorite spots for Limits of the largest Bolina I have seen, and 2 reds, at noon we have 5 legal lings in the boat, the c-bass boat came over to us to borrow a weight and reported limits of lings, I told my 3 buddies we can land 3 more legal lings, on our next drift the second it started to rain and I mean really within the first minute of drops coming down my buddy Jason hooked a large ling hitchhiker on a bolina, maybe even it was biting on the weight he was fishing, after yelling at the top of his lungs for the gaff he spooked the fish and took off, the next thing i know, my buddy Calvin c and I both hooked into and landed legal lings each both over 10#, being our count to 7, with 4 people fishing, Calvin and I both dropped again with the 2 others already in the water, he used a swim bait, I used an old red iron (little paint left on it) the next thing I know we both hooked into big fish again with seconds of dropping, landing another pair legal ling each, (that was 5 lings in this one spot 4 landed, and there was rain factor, has anyone ever seen a great bite like this start right when the rain starts? I have never seen that. We tossed back the smaller one and ended up with limits of very large bolina, 2 reds, 1 large Cabazon and 8 lings, it was an awesome opening day and the maiden voyage of new boat the Mary Jane III,
Such a good day I had to run again yesterday, ran to same spot but it was a very foggy ride good thing the GPS works, got to the same area seas were calm ran down very fast, at purisma it was sunny/foggy, only 2 other boats there sat, fishing was very hot as well but the day before was impressive, ended up with limits of large bolina, 5 reds, 4 cabazon, 1 white belly and 4 legal lings, also caught a nice sized flounder , only fished 5 hours yesterday had to get back and clean fish. F&G was checking every boat when we got back to port, Had a great opening weekend. Looks like everyone did good...

Hey Tin Can,
Braid makes a similar jig for 1/2 the cost. I tried one on Friday and it worked OK on the reds, but not as well as the squid lead heads. I caught a few lings on it also. It was green and pink and 4-1/2 oz.

Went up to Cape San Martin on Friday. Left MB about 6:30AM and it was lumpy, mixed up seas until just north of Cambria, where it pretty much glassed off and the lumps went away. We stopped north of the CSM rocks and fished 100' reefs for lots of hungry reds and olives. Fish were hitting a squid pattern lead head the best and we had many triples. Ended up with three limits of nice reds and olives. Tried out deeper (200') for not much action. Ride home against a soft south wind and light rain was smooth and fast. The south wind completely smoothed out the earlier northwest bump. Never saw F&G or Coast Guard. Hundreds of filleted reds were in the dumpster when we got back at around 4:00PM. It was a great opener!

Made the trip to Pt Sal and Purisma on Friday. Beautiful Day not much wind till about 1-2pm. Great ride there and back. 12 Gophers (nice size), 4 Reds, 1 leagal ling. About 4 shortie lings, one canary (went back of course). Bite was average I would say. Dead in some spots then hot in others. Used the Lucanus jigs. Lost about 50-70% of the bites. Still mastering I guess. They really chew the tails and with those small hooks, its really an art to profect, but they did get the attention most the time. They are also relatively easy to unhook when stuck. Got stuck several times and only lost one at $14.95 (ouch). Good luck.....also thanks Harrell for the call that morning, helped a lot.

TOTAL COUNT
26 REDS to 9#
1 tree 2 big jonnys
and 1 friggin gopher
3 lings to 12#
Was a great day on the pond a little wind in the morning , just fished the sea anchor.
Fish cleaning was EMPTY when we got back , a few boats and guys still there that were fishing today .
anyway thats it for this weekend.Good luck to all , go get them there fat and sassy , all fish were talen on swim baits and a couple on iron , OH yew , our buddy on board bought a couple of the HIGH DOLLAR LUCANAS baits at the boat show and two of the lings came on tit , was a orange looking thing , but for $18,00 a pop it better catch fish, swim baits were BIG HAMMER six inch , seemed the ones with the green and with the red egg sack worked the best.

Fish north from MB, as far north as the radar domes in So. Cambria. In depths of 50-140'
9 fish average for 3 of us. No keeper lings, 7 reds, rest was assorted rockfish.
Very flat and calm conditions after 10am. Really nice. Got some rain but not too bad. Overall a great day on the water.
Best set up was lg egg sinker, swivel and 2' leader with squid.

We fished north up by Diablo. 80' & less using Gulp baits. 8 lings, 6 were legals, kept our limit & released the others. Also got a good pick on some reds, a lg flounder, bolina, a cab & 2 gophers. Blowed like crazy after 10. Couldn't stay on the fish so came in. All-in-all a great opening day. Got checked by USCG for safety and DFG for anything illegals.

Greetings,
Fished PSL in the skiff this morning. No bait, so we drifted frozen squid and chovies. Only 1 flatfish, but it was a sandsole. Had a decent pick on rockfish around any pinnacle we drifted by. Ended the day with about 15 assorted rockfish, plus 1 keeper ling and cab.
Confused ocean today. Not much wind until 9, then steady breeze out of N...picked up to about 15 by 10:30. Headed down to Shell and fished in calm waters until it started raining at noon:-(
Not fishing tomorrow, but hopefully Sunday.
later,
steve

Sorry for the delayed reply. I would go with John Lindsey's forecast since he is the only one that actually forecasts the exact area that we fish .

Good luck to all that go tomorrow and I will be montoring 68 if anyone needs anything.

Harrell (or anyone else),
What do you make of the forecast on Saturday??? NOAA is saying vaiable 10 knots or less...picking up in the afternoon.
But John (PG&E) is calling for moderate to fresh (13-24 mph) Southerly winds...shifting to gentle to moderate (8-18 mph) W-NW winds on Saturday.
That is a big difference!!! Southerly winds > 15 mph are brutal against a NW swell!!!
Thanks for you evaluation.

steve

Guys,
If you use the Tide Table at the PSL website BE SURE to change the default seting from GMT time zone to Local Time zone. The system always defaults to GMT which if you dont read the fine print it gives you a completely different tide table. Could really screw you up. I noticed it this morning while checking tides and saw the data was completely different than what everyone was saying. I checked three other sites and it took me 30 minutes to finally read the fine print and change to local time and have tides match up. This could really be disastrous if you dont read the fine print. PSL should link to a site in local time. Even though they have the disclaimer in size 8 font, why risk it. Just link to a site that has local time. Just wanted to make sure everyone knew and perhaps I am the only one that skipped the fine print. Be safe....

Marty have they changed? I would think that Info would be in the regulation book. What good that book is I don't know. So it seems we should check the information on the internet every day before we fish. If you don't use a G.P.S you are in trouble. I wish there were some defined Land marks that are visual to use. I wonder if some way this could be done because when I use the kayak I'm not sure exactly where the borders are. I plan to use kayak Saturday.
