Fished out of MB on Friday for some decent fishing. Likely had 3 limits for 4 anglers. Kept the quality fish including one 28" halibut-nice surprise while rockfishing-and one really nice red. The water got nice and flat in the PM after some morning sickness, but very fishable all day. It is getting warmer up to 54 degrees in spots as well.Have a great weekend out there!

Greetings, Fish were between 35-55' of water, but have heard of fish caught all the way on the beach. I always use the trap rig (and still lost one yesterday!) The water has been pretty clean. I'd say 4-6' of visibility, maybe a little more. I'm guessing Marty will start launching at 5:30...but maybe 5. They were launching at 5:30 this morning. Deke has his bait pens in the water and was working on them today. He'll be looking for them tomorrow. He is open as soon as the boats start slinging. Fished Mussel Point today with Stacey on his new, to him, 24' Parker. Nice boat!!! We had outstanding gopher fishing, but also landed 3 keeper lings (+ 6 shorts), a few china's and 4 or 5 bolina. Limits of rockfish for 3. Steady breeze all day...got blown off at 2 pm. Thanks Stacey!!! Good luck to all that go out this weekend. It should be a zoo!!! best fishes, steve |

San Miguel Island report from last weekend. 3 day limit pass- 3 days limits. not really fishing, more like harvesting. Want baccacio, 1\4 way down, Jonny ? 1\2 way down, Reds or lings ... hit bottom. Mon. Lines in the water at 0700, limits by 1100, on the trailer and headed for home by 1300. Weather was great. Did have one Sea Lion attack the boat and bite the side...strange. |

Steve, Mind if I ask how deep of water you were fishing and were you using trap rigs on the larger baits? I have not had much luck with dead chovies over the years with hallies. We've found some great spots in 10-20' of water in shell over the past two years and want to hit them, but everything I've heard the fish are in deeper water. |

Greetings, Fished in the skiff today out of PSL. Launched off the pier at 8 a.m. with two bags of frozen chovies (I saw Deke later and he just put his bait cages in and will be looking for bait tomorrow). Tried to head N, but after one slammer that popped my buddy Stew's neck (sorry man!), we headed down to Shell Beach. Boy was that the right call. Excellent bite all day. We got 3 hali's (23", 28", 30"), 1 keeper ling (25") and about 15-20 rockfish...kept a dozen nice bolina and a few blacks. Finished our last frozen chovie @ 1:30 and headed back with about 15 knots of NW wind chop beating us up on the way in. best fishes, steve |

Weekend weather; Not looking as good as it did earlier this week. Swell is coming up some and most likely afternoon wind. Watch John's (PG&E) report for the latest and the best for local conditions. There has been a lot of cover on the outside so no good SST shots lately. |

I have to generate some cash to buy the new Honda 225. This has to be done without the old lady finding out...not that she is old and not that she is a lady but I have a garage full of stuff that might be of value... *2 two speed custom rod combos $325 each *20 polished aluminum rod holders / rocket launchers (the kind you use to build custom tops) also Dad is a welder so if your looking to building a top....he can do it. $25 each *45" transom bracket made from 3/8" aluminum with swim step (would be great for a diver building a boat) $850 *Not sue what these are worth but I have thousands of salt water plastics....maybe the board can tell me what what salt water swim baits are worth 4" 6" and 8" assorted colors *Honda 130 HP 4 stroke out board in excellent condition $4000 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-130-HP-25-OUTBOARD-MOTOR_W0QQcmdZ ViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318 Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem1c 09d00d5bQQitemZ120423714139QQptZBoatQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQ5fGear Jim g 805-610-4498 |

Fished MDO this morning in about 150ft. of water. Very spotty, about two limits for three of us. Mostly gopher cod with johnnies, starry's, coppers, and quite of few treefish in the mix. About 10 short lings ranging from 12" to 23." Steep swell, packed in close made it for a short day. Not much wind though. IH |

Billy Boy is ready to fish. Went out and looked a mile north & south of the rock last night for a shake down. Everything's right except no bait anywhere yet. We cannot set near the rocks or we'll destroy the net and it needs to be inside of about 75 feet or the net won't reach the bottom and they just swim under it. So if you see anything that's not near the rocks and inside of 75 feet deep, let us know. |

Here is the report. Chartered the Rita G from Michele Central Coast Sportfishing. We arrived at the boat 0600hrs my son a friend and 20 of my officers. I thought for sure it would be a puke fest as 18 of the Officers had never been on a boat before. Michele got us out the harbor and headed north to the promised land San Simeon. The weather was great a little fog that burned off in the mid morning and little to no swell most important NO WIND. We started out 190ft picked a few gopher cod and a few johny bass. We made a short move and it was on a few reds started coming over the side. About that time we had our first and only puker she had one too many red beers the night before. But she was a trooper she puked and got back to business catching fish. We fish through out the day filling our sacks with assorted rockies. Micheledid a great job keeping us on the fish. As the day rolled on I looked over at my son and he picked up a jig stick and started chucking a white Mega bait style iron that we had poured together. On his second toss I look over at him and he goes bendo. He looks over at me and I get to see those braces as he is smiling ear to ear. A few minutes later he yells GAAAAFF. I see $$$$$$$ in his eyes he has the jack-pot money spent as his fish come over the rail. He mentioned to me the night before "Dad after I win the jack-pot will you take me to buy an Ipod touch". After his fish hit the deck I tell myself the little shit did it. Through out the rest of the day if you didn't throw white iron you got no love. I even tried swimbaits with no love. I went back to the iron and scored one of the two legal lings. The final count for the day. 26 anglers - 156 reds, 104 assorted rockfish, 2 lingcod, 1 ocean whitefish I can't express enough Central Coast Sportfishing class A operation. Great skipper great crew if you get a chance book a trip. http://www.centralcoastsportfishing.com/ It was a great trip it has been 7 years since I was on a Charterboat. Even though it was a great trip I am glad I have my own boat. |

Is it legal to shoot the sea lions in such a case. Or use a paint ball gun. Personally is I felt threatend I would shoot it. then fillet him. He will just do it to another boat And I hope the boat won't have kids on it. It seems that the sea lions are getting brave and don't have fear of man any more. |

Fished last saturday just north of the rock with all of the great info. from you guys about ball bouncing. It all worked really well, no tangles, no problems what so ever....Water was very dirty so my chances were probably pretty slim....but it was good practice..Early into it, I had a large sea lion come up to the boat to check me out..This is common...but then this guy was getting really persistent about wanting to look inside my boat..Enough so that I wacked him on the head with my rod a couple times to chase him off..This didnt deter him at all and I felt he was going to jump in with me...So I reeled in my gear and Just as I got it clear of the water...In he came! My Big Ice chest at the back of the boat helped keep him on the side of the boat...and I went to hitting him with my rod....actually this hardly phased him..but he did then decide to leave, just as my Hoochie stuck in his back....finally the hook bent and I got all my gear back...I was fishing alone so I wasnt able to photograph this whole scene....would have been funnier than hell if anyone could have watched it..Is this common? |

will- i never was impressed with the way the engine cover is waterproofed against the transom. they may have changed this. it was a couple years ago i looked at them at the fred hall. i'm talking about an inboard model, of course. also it seems like i didn't like the way they finished or didn't finish the inside of the rails all around the cockpit. check it out. |

NARCD I would fight that one to the end , if you filled them out as required by law , you were not over limit , and fully cooperative with them , its just bullshit , I respect the laws but when they get CHICKENSHIT it gets my dander up , and raises my JARHEAD HACKELS and I will fight them to the END ........ On another note we were also on the water today on a another kind of TRIP , we were aboard the 40ft sailing vessel of one of our club members , Herb ( and thats all you need to know about him ) anyway we pulled the traps that he had set a week ago, got some nice crabs , nothing like he usally gets , but there on my PLATE now and some of my neighbors also , also got schooled to the fine art of BOUNCE BALLING , Herb knows this I have seen his results last year , He knows how to catch them and where there at , today was not our day we had two lings , short caught by Herb , and two blacks one by me one by wild bill , Jerry watched. Had a great day lost two traps and were back at the meeting by 1400. THATS all Blackie |

fished today up in front of san simeon point in about 70 to 80 feet of water for a limit reds and whitefish. nothing big maybe 2-3lbs with 2 over 5lbs. all the fish came on a green flake scampi. i don't usually travel far for rockfish but the water on some spots i like to fish up by estero was pretty dirty. it cleaned up nice near white rock and the dead calm morning conditions let me run wot all the to san simeon. no fog and the wind finally came up i guess about noon. but not bad. looked around for the squid in front of cambria but couldn't find any. i had a feeling as i haven't seen the birds working the last couple weeks. anyways ran back down to villa and constatine to bounce but the water needs to clean up a bit. i did see a lot more fin bait above cambria than morro and looked to be a hatch of some kind inside the bay.tons of whales today pilots? i think and some grays. also right around the old radar bouy there were several salmon finning on the surface. maybe next year a different report..... |

No personal experience, but I've seen a lot of them in Baja around La Paz. They're constructed of a copolymer theromoformed plastic and are supposed to be very, very strong. Check out their website at: http://www.triumphboats.com/ |

Rogcab, just so happens I went out on the same hull you are looking at yesterday. It was powered by a 150 hp honda. We ran it at 40plus kts at lake Naci. It seemed to be a 1st class boat and I know the owner has run it to Ano Nuevo. I wouldn`t hesitate to take it to Purisima. Capt Dave |

Does anyone out there have any experience with Triumph Boats. I'm looking at a used 06 195cc w/ a suzuki 140. It's a plastic type of hull which i'm not too familiar with and almost 40 years newer than what i have now. Any info would be much appreciated. |

Friends: We headed north yesterday and fished about 8 miles above Piedras Blancas. We fished in about 60-80 feet of water. It was a steady pick and caught a limit of nice lings, reds and olive bass. Fog burned off about 11 a.m. and it was a glorious day thereafter. The vote today might have impact on future of MPAs along the CA coast. Some members of F&G Commission believe the whole MPA process should be put on hold unless the legislature can assure that the "monitoring process" will go forward. It is unlikely that state will be able to budget any money for monitoring. CDFG says monitoring will cost somewhere between $10-$25 million per year. It is unknown if putting MPA process on hold would have any impact on the existing MPAs along our Central Coast. I will keep you posted. Mel |

We were one of the boats that went south yesterday (Sal/Purisima). Slow start but after the tide changed to a strong incoming the bite picked up. We stayed at Sal/Mussle for our 4 limits, mostly bolina. The boats that went to Purisma did great on big lings to 16lbs. We still had a little time after we got our limits so ran back up to the coke plant to check it out for halibut but no luck. Worked 60ft for about 45 minutes in water that was not clean enough yet. MEMORIAL DAY WEATHER: Except for this wednesday which will probably be breezy the forecasts are good through the weekend. Might be some afternoon wind but no big swell or strong winds. Could be fog so if you don't have RADAR stick with a boat that does. |

We had a dozen boats out today, 8 went south with just about full limits around and 27 lings. Local guys had 'bout half limits. I'll be in early if anyone wants to make the run south. Marty Jim- Good call on going with the single powerplant. You will be happier with the lighter stern even if you go with a kicker. |

Just got back from Specialty Marine in Ventura, Eric could not have been better as far as customer service goes....However he did talk me out of the twin motor set up and into a new Honda 225.....If anyone is looking for a Honda 130 HP Four stroke outboard with 400 hours on it give me a call. It has been taken very good care of and is still on the boat for sea trials..$4000 firm. Jim 610-4498 |

Sorry Tim - eveyone - back then the toilets drained directly through the hull. From inside the head (bathroom) where no one could see us "fishing" we were flushing the baited hook and hand lineing fish back to the boat through the plumbing! The guy on deck would gaff the fish when the fishes nose stopped at the through hull. It was so frantic on deck the captain who told us to stop fishing was too busy to notice. That or he was so impressed with his son's resourcefulness he never said a word. Kind of gives new meaning to "brown cod fishing" don't it! |

Felt the wrath of the south winds up in Cambria and got blown off at about 10am. Glad to hear it laid down for you guys in the afternoon. Drift was so quick we had problems sticking the 8 oz irons on the bottom. Was kind of a bummer considering Saturday was so nice and Sunday was forecasted to be that way. Just the way it goes sometimes I guess. |

Mr. Bateman? Wow, now I really feel old. Woody and I had some battery problems early, but made it up to Cambria by about 10 AM and found some nice reds in about 100 feet of water. All came on plastics. Water was real clear northwest of Point Estero and it laid down pretty well in the afternoon. Fish tasted awesome.. |

Yeah Darby, the old guys that used to be up there every albie season sure miss the good old days. Plus, Jocko's is seriously missing alot of business because of it. Any chance you can get Luckenbach to run a "for old times sake" trip? It would be good to have a season this year. Mikey |

Here's a Mike Lackey fish story for you. We were about 15 on an insane Morro Bay albacore albie bite. Because it was so WFO Mike's dad, Captain Weldon Lackey, wouldn't let us deadhead kids fish and told us to "JUST STAY OUT OF THE WAY!" After awhile, Mike handed me a gaff and told me to stand at the port side and "STAY THERE". I remember thinking, "Boy these Lackeys are a bossy bunch." But since he seemed to have a reason for it, I did. A few minutes later this fish starts a wierd cirle about 10 feet out, ran into the side of the boat and stuck there kicking it's nose right into the hull so I gaffed it! It came up with a hook and about 40 ft of 60# mono on it. That's it! Mike came out of the galley and before I could explain, coiled the line off the fish, pinned on a fresh bait and said "Your turn!. Wha. .?" I started. "GO DROP IT DOWN THE HEAD!" "Then pull like hell until it won't come in anymore." "And lock the door!" By the end of the day we had some sore hands and half a dozen fish that "People just gave us". That was the wosrt part about it, we couldn't tell anyone how we got 'em!! |

Well another nice day on the pond. There was a Marine Layer (Fog) in the am but, we had several boats make the trek south to purisima. They did good with 3/4 to full limits and a lot of lings. The guys thst fished local had a little harder grind at it with most with just 1/2 limits. We had 53 boats today, 42 lings, and 3 halibut with Dan Bivens boy catching his first hali weighing in at 18.2 lbs. The weather looks like its going to hold for a couple days. Good Fishin Marty |

Greetings, Fished PSL in the skiff today. Used frozen chovies and squid. Fished in a foggy, but glassy ocean until noon. Got 1 24" 'but and 4 sandsole (2 decent ones around 16"), plus 4 blacks and a few gophers. Nice day on the water...just wish we had some more of the right kind of flat fish biting! We did earn some good Karma today by pulling a boat from nearly off the rocks. We kept hearing a "hey!" for about an hour...we thought maybe it was ranchers, kayakers or hikers. Finally as we drifted a little closer we looked over towards the "hey" and saw someone waving a shirt. We motored over and found 3 guys in an old boat with an even older motor in about 15' of water probably 100 yards from the shoreline. We tried to jump them, but nada. After giving them a rope (they had none) I towed them out in to deeper water, but they also had no anchor. They had no radio or cell phone reception in that close...so I called the coast guard who contacted harbor patrol. They eventually got their motor started and fished the rest of the day. Please carry at least a few safety items if you are going to fish around here. At least an anchor...those guys got very lucky there was no wind today or they would have been on the beach! Plus don't rely on cell phones...there are many dead zones up and down our coast. They got lucky I fish in that close...most folks don't. Don't depend on someone else to save your day!!! In addition...if you need help, yell "HELP!" "Hey" doesn't really spur a lot of interest out on the water. best fishes, steve |

Out of Port San Luis @ 6:30ish(thanks for the ride Marty). Headed down to Purisma in quite foggy viz, but gentle seas. A couple of blips on the radar but not so much as to keep us less than 20knts. Our first drift was about 7:30. A short ling, and 2 boccacio. After that, it was on! We kept 5 ling(25-30inches), 2 yellow eye and 3 canaries!(just kidding)! Really, the boccacio were aggressive. A few vermillion and an assortment of other reds. No blues, blacks or gophers in the bunch and all in the "quality fish" range. We let go 3 lings that were just touching 24" but let them go in case they shrank on the way home. Headed back to the barn at 11a.m., got back by 12(good seas with a trailing South)in the fog. All in all, a great day of fishing for 4 with a take of 26! |

We fished for a couple hours off Hazard Canyon in 70 ft of water for only few rock fish. We also caught 7 or 8 just short lingcod and one keeper. The day began with a cold south wind and small whitecapps so we made it a short day. Bob Hather |

Made a really nice little stop on the 1st morning of our 5-day trip and are celebrating the first Albacore catch of the season at about easy day and 1/2 range. John Humphries claimed the first at 24.5 lbs on the troll and Gerald Gaughen caught the first baitfish, a 19.5-lb Albie. Next came Calvin Kumamoto with a 19.9-lb Bluefin on the troll. Beautiful water and weather conditions. We are now heading down to the islands and will report more later. It is time to go fishing!!!! Good fish'n, Mike and the Vagabond Crew |

good stuff darby. one thing i've learned over the years here is to check the 46028 bouy (cape san martin) before you head out of morro bay. you can be sure of some sloppy water if its been blowing 15+ with gusts all night. if its laying down at night, plan on a decent day. |

I know most of you have this but some still ask for weather reports. Here's the local interactive weather buoys link for weather. http://www.lajollasurf.org/nocal.html Click on the bouy in the area you want to see. That shows current and past conditions. Click on "Latest NWS Marine Forecast" and scroll down for the area you want to know about (WATERS FROM PT. PIEDRAS BLANCAS TO PT. ARGUELLO). Keep in mind the weather on the "outside" ie. "10 TO 60 NM OFFSHORE" IS NOT very often the same as the inside, 0-10 miles offshore so don't let that scare you out of a good day fishn'. You can usually always get the morning in anyway and if it's going to blow just run North and come home with it. Also you can get on John Lindsey's daily forcast list. He is the most accurate for local "inside" weather. (And Harrell Kimball!) To request subscribe email PGEweather@pge.com . By phone call (805) 545-3768. Bob, would it be possible to have the forum pages link to the bouys in the area of that forum as well as a general "National Data Bouy Center" link? And maybe post this info permanently here. I did a seminar in Santa Maria last night and nearly everyone there reads this page but never posts so I'm sure for every post there are hundreds of readers! |

O.k. I guess I'll qualify myself since I'm new here. First I love this site and have been reading ya'll for about a year now. Lots of great advise, tips and stories! My Stepdad is Steve P. with the "Carmen" and he used to have the Cha Cha as well, fishing mostly from Port San Luis. I've spent many an hour fishing from these vessels. In fact we are heading to Purisma tomorrow(Sun). Now, getting back to the shark thing. Dave(Sangria), no, the gal in Avila was simply the slowest seal in the bunch. Swimming at times and conditions as she was and had been for many years,, well the odds are she would have an "incident". Darby, love your posts! Chief Niehus, great story as well. Will Bateman, absolutely love the photo's! I believe those are from South Africa and the one with the kayaker was NOT photo shopped! I checked on that one a few years ago when I first saw it! O.k., this post is getting a little long so I will just say this,, YES they are out there! And ever time you get in the water, are taking a chance in being attacked by something you can't see or something you can, like a jelly fish. In California, statiscally speaking the numbers of Great Whites are very small and the chance of being struck,, well I hope you get my point. Although, it does happen. Avila, Pismo, Estero Bay,,, enough siteings to make anyone nervous. I know a guy, years ago paddling way out side of Montana de Oro. Maybe you know of Casmere Opolinski(I hope I spelled his name right). The paddle board that he (borrowed) was savagely attacked. He fought off the fish and safely returned to shore. He still surfs and paddles like a mad man. God love him! My end point is, I understand why people are afraid of the ocean. But, I'm more afraid of some bimbo yaking of a cell phone in rush hour traffic. Everyone, have a great weekend and good luck on the water! |

Look if you guys are worried about a white shark. Check this item out called Shark Shield. I own one it was designed in Australia. There is a web sight for them and if anyone wants to see one I can show you mine. It works on electrical force shield that effects those black receptors on the shark's snout. I got mine from a Kayak fishing site. |

One more thing Jim; I would put a digital tach on your boat then you can set both engines at the exact same RPM. Is the second engine counter rotating / If not you may need to talk to someone on how to offset the torque that tends pull the boat to the right (I think it would be right) My engines are counter rotating so it balanced out. |

Jim; I think you made the right choice all things considered but then you knew my opinion. On the fuel flow system. There are less expensive ones out there than flowscan. The best thing that I have used mine for is to know the total fueled used at any given time and especially when we hit the dock and it is time to collect the "donations". I never had much success optimizing performance because there are too many other factors when setting cruise speed. '. |
