dave, i'm not knocking anybody. i'm telling anyone interested in buying bait from morro right now or this weekend it's buyer beware. if you want dead, dying, oversized sardines and are willing to spend thirty dollars a scoop for it its a non issue. i'm sure darby and doug will work through the seal problems and i'm sure they'll get better bait on the next trip. this is a fishreport board. i reported the fishing and an honest assessment of the bait. when it has been good bait i'm the first one to report it. construction's a tough job! jim-it totally depends on the size of the bait, how many fishers you have onboard, etc. if your going offshore you want a litlle bit more. but fishing locally we get by with a half scoop. |

Sometimes the baits good, sometimes it's not. We do our best to make the best. Put alot of money into new recievers, the boat and the net this year. Seals, extreme tides and many other variables determine the condition of the bait. The best bait is NOT usually the bait right off the boat but the bait that has been "cured" for a week in the recievers. This load was weak from the time we put it on. We'll be going again in a day or so. Also, when it's weak or really large Doug will give you a little extra until he runs low so you can cull out the weak ones. The best bait is always the last to go. This is how Doug makes his living so be thankful he's willing to work as hard as he does for all of us and support him. There'd be no live bait service without him. But here's the bottom line: Even if it rolls in the tank it's still cheaper and better fresh dead than frozen. And I've caught alot of halibut and even won a tournament on frozen. |

I have a few general question about bait and do not want to sound like I do not appreciate the bait guys....because I appreciate them...with that said, What does a scoop consist of (how mainy baits)? How much bait does a 20 get you? I have a 30 gallon bait tank, how much bait will that hold? |

Robb, please don`t knock the bait guys. It`s a thankless job. They work their tails off. Some times it`s good and some times it isn`t but it always is better than salted or squid. Capt Dave |

fished out of morro today for barely a limit for three of us. very slow on the rockfish.our plan was to fish halibut all day so we got some bait from virges but wished we hadn't. clearly virges has some problems keeping bait and they definetly need to work on the receivers.the bait was pretty beat up and doug acknowledged that the seals take a toll on the bait. my advice, check the bait before you buy and wait until you can get it right off the billy boy. live bait doesn't mean live bait that you can use. |

Greetings, For the guys asking where exactly I caught those fish today...for the sake of my friends who I told exactly where I was, I'm not going to say. But...I think there are fish everywhere right now. If you don't have any halibut spots now, go out and drift around for while where there is sand and rocks. Move around a lot. If there is no drift, use your kicker/motor to move you along. I use a electric trolling motor to cruise along at 0.5-1.2 mph. I've spent hundreds of hours out there finding good halibut habitat. Put in your time and you'll get them. In addition, leave the rockfish gear at home. Halibut fishing is slow, so if you are expecting rockfish action you'll get bored quickly and switch over. Stick with it and you'll get one. On Tuesday I fished 6 hours before I caught my only halibut of the day! The most important piece of info I gave you...50' of water Good luck out there! best fishes, steve |

Greetings, All I have to say is "Thanks Deke!!!!" Deke has the kind sardines from 4-7". They stayed fresh all day with only a few rolling. But some bait from Deke and give him a good tip for providing us with such awesome bait!!! What a day!!! Fished 3 in the little skiff today for 2 limits of nice halibut. Didn't need to measure any fish (but did anyway!). Two were just over 24" and the rest were 28-34". Unbelievable...It was one of those magical bites that started 15 minutes after we dropped down and ended at noon with our last fish. We had 2 or 3 raked baits, 2 keeper lings, 2 shorts, 5 rockfish and 4 sandsole. The boat would not plane on the way in! The best part of the day was when Nick came over to get a bait, dropped down and immediately landed a 40" halibut all by himself...and it was his first keeper halibut ever!!! Amazing. Flat calm all day. No wind and a barely perceptable swell. Good luck to all that fish this weekend...it should be an epic one!!! best fishes, steve |

Jimmy, it's not about racing guy. It's about fishing. It's about the good times and the bonding with our family and friends. It's about passing along knowledge to our children while we spend time with them. All of this is so that when your kids and my boy are talking about the good times after you and I are gone, they can say... hey remember when... that old jarhead left jimmy in his wake and was already on the trailer when jim got to the dock. ha ha ha |

Here's a pic of two of the halibut we caught today.
Check out the two halibut...a right eye and left eye halibut. Most we catch around here are right eye...but occasionally we get a left eye.
My daughter Zoe's first trip in my boat (she's 2). She did manage to catch 1 gopher that day...mom and dad forgot to get a picture of her first fish

You're saying you have to use line before hooks, respectively? As relating to each; particularly; as each belongs to each; as each refers to each in order; as, let each man respectively perform his duty. Relatively; not absolutely. Partially; with respect to private views. With respect; regardfully. DFG needs to publish their own Dictionary! |

Greetings, Fished PSL in the skiff again today. Fished North of the lighthouse for 3 nice flatties (26", 29", 30") and 1 raked bait. Also caught 2 keeper lings and a few rockfish. Halibut were in 30-50' of water. All fish came on frozen chovies...but I will happily be fishing live bait tomorrow! Absolutely flat calm ocean. No wind at all until noon and barely a breeze until we got off the water at 3 pm. Maybe 2-3' swell. Heading out again tomorrow. Thanks Deke for getting bait Hey, that was one of my students' Dad that caught that big halibut. I think he had a final today and couldn't go best fishes, steve |

Wow...I was a little nervous to ask the question. It sure got a lot of response.Somebody pointed me to page 51 paragraph 28.65...it says any number of lines may be used (Except) When groundfish or lincod are aboard or in posession. Where only one line and 2 hooks may be used. I called fish and game this morning, but when they tried to get me to a warden, I only got voice mail. Thanks for all the input and pointing me to page 51.If they are going to fine a guy for doing all the right things (but the ink gets smeared on his abalone card)We need to be absolutely sure what the regs say... |

Sorry, but respectively doesn't have anything to do with respect. It is this: Respectively: It means in a specifically stated order. Or, as in you can only use one line and two hooks, respectively. |

In posession of rockfish you can only have one rod in the water, respectively. respectively means: as relates individually to each one or to act with or show respect. So, it's up to them if you are breaking the law. If you are trolling with Halibut gear you are probably safe? But, if you are dropping multiple lines and over a rockpile, you are not showing respect. |

My understanding in the last couple of seasons is that you get your halis first, then go fish for RF ( if you are multiple hook set ups and more than one rod) If you have any RF in your posession then any gear in the water has to comply with RF regs. |

from what i understand you can fish as many rods for halibut that you want. you can have rockfish on board and still use multipal rods while halibut fishing(my halibut setups look way different then my rockfish)i have been caught by fish and game bringing up rockfish(released) while halibut fishing whith two rods and never had a problem. were talking off our coast and not inland waters. |

Regarding using more than one Rod, check the first few paragraphs on page 51 of the 2009 Ocean Regs. It states that any time Rockfish or Lingcod are aboard or in possession you can only fish with two hooks and one line per angler. You can fish with two poles off of a public pier (of course if you catch a rockfish that would negate that!) Also it states that North of Pt. Conception you can only use one rod and line for fishing for Salmon (I know, useless right now!). Other than that, at the top of page 51 it states that you can use any number of hooks and lines except for these other restrictions. |

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 Investigation of Fish & Game Commission Member Begins by Dan Bacher The California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) disclosed on May 19 that its Enforcement Division has opened a formal investigation into conflict of interest charges against Fish and Game Commissioner George Michael Sutton regarding his votes on the implementation of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) . "This action is in response to the sworn complaint against Sutton filed by the Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition (CCFCC) and the CCFCC fully supports the FPPC action," according to a statement from Mel de la Motte, the CCFCC President. CCFCC is charging Sutton with violating the Political Reform Act (PRA) of 1974 because of his conflicts of interest on votes on the MLPA while serving on the Fish and Game Commission. The investigation is taking place at a time when recreational anglers, commercial fishermen, sustainable seeweed harvesters, grass roots environmentalists and elected officials across the political spectrum are charging the Schwarzenegger administration with conflict of interest, mission creep and lack of transparency in its fast track implementation of the MLPA. "The CCFCC has more aggressive legal avenues to pursue if Commissioner Sutton does not resign," said de la Motte. "Such measures could result in civil money damages against Sutton, but we are hopeful that he will do the right thing for California." Specifically, de la Motte said Sutton's action in voting to approve the Draft Master Plan of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) violated the PRA because "it was reasonably foreseeable that the decision would have a material financial effect on his own income and on his employer and source of income, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation (Aquarium). As Vice President and founding director of the Aquarium's Center For the Future of the Oceans, Sutton is paid a salary to influence policy and to support efforts to create a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) in California and offshore waters, including fully protected marine reserves." Had Sutton voted to amend the existing MPAs for the Central Coast (which are included in the Master Plan), he would have been voting to gut or weaken a system of MPAs in which, his employer exults, the Center for the Future of the Oceans, under his stewardship, played a "key role" in having adopted, noted de la Motte. "Sutton's conflicts do not derive solely from the mere fact that he is a salaried employee of the Aquarium," stated de la Motte. "He is in fact closely connected to many of the key players involved in the process of implementing the MLPA and these connections create conflicts under the Political Reform Act (See Chart)." De la Motte said that Sutton also violated the Fish and Game Commission's own conflict code by failing to disclose as required by law his employment with the Aquarium. "Sutton's participation in any Fish and Game Commission decision relating to MPAs or to the establishment of limitations on fishing is prohibited under the PRA and a cease and desist order must be issued restraining Sutton from participating in such decisions," he added. Prominent politicians, including Senator Majority Leader Dean Florez (D-Shafter), North Coast Assemblyman Wes Chesbro (D-Arcata), and grass roots environmental activists are challenging the legitimacy of Schwarzenegger’s fast track MLPA Process in light of “mission creep” and conflict of interest charges. Florez in March that he and other Senators plan to ask some “very tough” questions of Chrisman and Mike Sutton, Fish and Game Commission member, about the MLPA process in an upcoming Senate hearing (no date has been set yet.) These questions include why the MLPA has been expanded from a $250,000 process to a $35 million fiasco that is threatening the economy and fisheries on the North Central Coast. Other conflicts of interest that fishermen, seaweed harvesters and grassroots environmental activists are urging to be investigated include: • The role of Catherine Reheis-Boyd, CEO and Chief of Staff for the Western States Petroleum Association, a member of the five-member MLPA Blue Ribbon Task Force. John Lewallen, longtime North Coast environmentalist and seaweed harvester, asks, "Is it coincidence that the Point Arena Basin offshore from Point Arena is the area of highest oil industry interest in Northern California, and the only tract here now open to Minerals Management Service offshore oil leasing process?" • the role of the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation, a private organization, in funding the MLPA process. • The role that Gordon Smith, the former President and CEO of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, plays on the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation Board. Does he have a vested interest in removing from North Central Coast waters the most vocal opponents of PG&E's wave energy schemes - fishermen and seaweed harvesters? Patrick Higgins, 5th Division commissioner of the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District and one of the most respected fishery scientists in California, wrote an op-ed in the Eureka Times-Standard on May 21 slamming Schwarzenegger's MLPA process. "I am both a scientist and a conservationist and favor ocean protection, but the MLPA process is not science-based and, therefore, there is no guarantee that it will achieve its conservation objectives," he stated. Higgins takes aim at the Blue Ribbon MLPA Task Force, calling it a "corruption of the democratic process." "This task force was not established by the legislature when they passed the MLPA," said Higgins. "It is comprised of foundation CEOs, offshore oil interests, marina developers and other friends of Governor Schwarzenegger and has been inserted into the process through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between CDFG and OPC. This is a corruption of the democratic process that North Coast communities will be protesting to legislators, whose intent is being thwarted." For more information, call Mel de la Motte, President of the CCFCC, 805-544-2424. |

Wow, I may have pitched the perfect game...Had a beautiful healthy baby at 0800 hours and sold my outboard on ebay by 2000 hours. So I challenge any of my fellow fish report gentleman this one question: Have any of you ever doubled the size of you family and doubled your Horse Power all in the same day? Top of the world |

Friends: Please scroll down to the entry by Carl Moore under the user name "Tsunami". You can read the complaint at "RightToFish.com". We contemplated bringing a civil law suit against Sutton for his egregious violation of "conflict of interest" laws ... but chose this milder approach. We are hopeful he will resign. If he does not ... we still have our stronger legal remedies. Mel de la Motte Pres. of CCFCC |

Made my first ocean run in my new boat, new to me anyway. Fished south of the domes for some nice reds, a few short lings and one salmon. No we didn't keep it. My brother in law couldn't believe it and let the line go slack and off it swaw, without a barbless hook. Will try and run north this Friday. |

Fyi from Coastside FAIR POLITICAL PRACTICES COMMISSION OPENS INVESTIGATION OF FISH AND GAME COMMISSIONER MIKE SUTTON Sutton Violated Conflict of Interest Laws FPPC Opens Formal Investigation SACRAMENTO – On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, the California Fair Political Practices Commission disclosed that the Enforcement Division of the Fair Political Practices Commission (the “FPPC”) has opened a formal investigation into Fish and Game Commissioner George Michael Sutton. This action is in response to the sworn complaint against Sutton filed by the Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition. Sutton is charged with violating the Political Reform Act (PRA) of 1974 because of his conflicts of interest on votes on the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) while serving on the Fish and Game Commission. Specifically, Sutton’s action in voting to approve the Draft Master Plan of the MLPA violated the PRA because it was reasonably foreseeable that the decision would have a material financial effect on his own income and on his employer and source of income, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation (Aquarium). As Vice President and founding director of the Aquarium’s Center For the Future of the Oceans, Sutton is paid a salary to influence policy and to support efforts to create a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) in California and offshore waters, including fully protected marine reserves. Had Sutton voted to amend the existing MPAs for the Central Coast (which are included in the Master Plan), he would have been voting to gut or weaken a system of MPAs in which, his employer exults, the Center for the Future of the Oceans, under his stewardship, played a “key role” in having adopted. Sutton’s conflicts do not derive solely from the mere fact that he is a salaried employee of the Aquarium. He is in fact closely connected to many of the key players involved in the process of implementing the MLPA and these connections create conflicts under the Political Reform Act. Sutton also violated the Fish and Game Commission’s own conflict code by failing to disclose as required by law his employment with the Aquarium. Sutton’s participation in any Fish and Game Commission decision relating to MPAs or to the establishment of limitations on fishing is prohibited under the PRA and a cease and desist order must be issued restraining Sutton from participating in such decisions. |

Headed out of Morro for our shake-down cruise today. Fishing was fairly slow but we managed to scratch up a half-dozen quality reds, a 26" ling, a 27" halibut and some gophers... tossed back 7 or 8 short ling. Water was really dirty in Estero but cleaned up around the point. The 'butt came from around the ab farm. Was nice in the morning with just some leftover chop. Wind came up around 10:30 and looked like it was going to blow in earnest but it stopped at about 12:30 as was real nice for a couple hours before is started back up. Back on the trailer just after 4. The boat ran great. We did a complete repower with a pair of VP 3.0's and SX drives. We replaced almost everything from the helm to the props. Way more power than the old AQ125's! It's amazing what a bit more power does for you! It's like a whole new boat... we now top out at just over 32 knots compared to the 21 or so before and picked up about .5 mpg. It's rock solid. Bring on the tuna! ---- Tyee --Farallon 25 |

Greetings, Fished PSL today in the skiff. My daughters first trip out on the big pond (she's only two)! Drifted around for a few hours for only 1 gopher, which Zoe reeled about half way in. Cold and windy when we got out there at 9 a.m. Heard from some others guys that it was rough outside...it was bumpy off of Shell. best fishes, steve |

A late report but still... Friday, launched from Morro and headed straight to San Simeon. First drop was about 8am and we were on the reds before we hit the bottom. Great day of steady pick, mostly reds but 2 keeper lings and several shorts. More canaries released than I've ever seen. Stopped just short of full bags for 4 guys. 3 relative rookies on board who were absolutely thrilled with the day on the water. So was I... Good Fishing! Wes |

Had a really good day on the reds today. We started north from Morro Bay where the water was 55 degrees and very dirty. Stopped in front of the ab farm for a half hour for nothing but saw a ten pound salmon swim 5' from the boat. Saw some orcas as well. Then tried Cambria for nothing then San Simeon then the lighthouse for nothing. The water cleared up to 15' visibility at Cambria and dropped to 51 degrees. North of the lighthouse we saw some sea lions feeding on squid. There was no fin bait. At Ragged Point we finally got into the bite. Almost all reds, some quite large for 4 limits. The wind was 6 knotts, perfect for a drift. After a slow start the bite got red hot. Bob |
