i fished halibut on tuesday. made bait in cayucos and fished around point estero for one flattie then back down to just below constatine in the afternoon for another. rockfish was slow allthough i didn't put much effort in. i got a bunch of new swim baits from virges but the reds i caught would only eat my old beat up scampi's. go figure |

For the guys wanting to know about pacific coast fish I would suggest picking up a copy of Dr. Milton Love's book "Probably more than you want to know about pacific coast fish". It is a very informative book and very easy to read. Each particular fish in the book has info on range, diet and fishery. Dr. Love is also a very humerous writer and you will find yourself laughing more than once as you read the book. |

Interesting...this is from my Alum OSU (Go Beavs!) ***** M.S. Thesis Defense ***** Tuesday June 9th 3pm Burt 193 Mr. Charles M. Barr M.S., Marine Resource Management Advisor: Dr. Lorenzo Ciannelli "Are there two subgroups of albacore, Thunnus alalunga, in the North Pacific? Evidence from variability in catch, seasonal migrations, and length composition in the coastal fishery of North America" North Pacific albacore (Thunnus alalunga) is a highly migratory and commercially valuable species of tuna. All stock assessments and management decisions for North Pacific albacore are presently based on the assumption of a single, uniform stock. However, a growing body of evidence from diverse sources suggests that there are two subgroups of albacore in the coastal fishery of North America. These subgroups are believed to occur north and south of 400 North latitude. This study investigated the existence of the proposed subgroups using more than 40 years of logbook and port sampler data provided by the Southwest Fisheries Science Center. We examined regional differences in the coastal albacore fishery using three metrics: 1) catch per unit effort (CPUE), 2) entry and exit date, and 3) size composition. Distinct regional differences were observed for each metric. Spatial mapping of average CPUE by month suggested that migration into the coastal fishery occurs at two distinct locations: approximately 450 North latitude and 300 North latitude. Seasonal availability, expressed as average CPUE by month, differed between the two regions. Average entry and exit dates were also different between the two regions, with the northern region starting on average one month later (July) and ending one month earlier (October) than the southern region. Moreover, albacore from the southern region averaged 2.5 cm longer than those caught in the northern region. These results support previous findings and suggest that the coastal albacore fishery is comprised of two subgroups with distinct migration routes and size characteristics. The results may have implications for the management of this fishery, particularly if these subgroups represent separate and distinct stocks. Because this study did not examine reproduction, further research is needed to determine if the subgroups spawn independently in space and time. |

Bob- That's a really nice haul of longfin. You really have to like the way things are shaping up on the water plus lower fuel costs. I have a good feeling about this. I will be at the islands this weekend fishing exotics. |

As far as the range of Pacific Halibut...last year there were three confirmed pacific halibut caught in the Santa Barbara channel, one by my nephew when he was dragging for shrimp. It was about 15lbs, another was an est. 80lber caught in a gill net three miles out. They are out there!!!! |

Mike, a few years back I made an albacore run on June 3rd and caught 22 fish. At 5 PM yesterday the water was 61.5 degrees at 60 mi and 59 degrees at 50 mi. The ocean is dead flat. We have good bait and fuel prices are back down. Maybe its time for a peek outside. Bob |

Don't get to eager to see the albies show in June guys. I would love to be proven wrong, but every time except once I can remember when they show in any numbers in June they go away until late September and then don't stay long. The one exception; about 1998 or '99 they stayed all summer, the weather held and our last trip was in February! Otherwise, I'd rather see them on schedule in August. |

Yes some wardens can be real pricks and take all the fun out of a really fun day. Shit happens and try not to let it bother you. It's their problem and not yours. You're legal, have fun! Fishermen know how to eat a fish; eat the meat and spit the bones. Todd was a prick and fortunately he's been promoted past dealing with us. He sited me once for not properly filling out my deer tag. It was filled out, just not properly. The deer was in his brother's cold box that we all know he checked because he validated our tags every year! When I said it was rediculous he said, "Some people think that's the best place to hide a deer."!! If you know Mark (Todd's brother) you know how rediculously absurd that statement is! That's when I learned it's just a game. Real game management depends on us. |

Local Albies may be a reality gang. Only a partial SST view but 61-plus-degree water is close to the 1908. We had fish in 59-degree water just a few years ago in early June (near Donut), 10 fish for two sticks and half on bait. The Push this year seems to be coming from SW so they could be there right now. |

Here's a nice Oregon Pacific Halibut. They get a few in Northern Cali along the Mendocino and Humboldt coast, but I don't think they come down as far as San Fran. They get hundred + pounders every year up in Oregon...but the true monsters live further North. Paul, I talk to Stacey and he said they were 4-5" long, which I'm assuming is an adult market squid? |

Good morning everyone. Im a long time lurker first time poster. Im headed over to Pismo Coast Village this weekend and would like to get out for a little fishing maybe out of the PSL area. I dont own a boat and dont like fishing in crowds. I would like to get my 12 yr old son out this weekend if possible. I will be heading over thursday afternoon and staying till sunday. I'm willing to split or maybe even cover the fuel cost, help with clean up and supply the snacks for the trip if anyone has room. I hate to ask this way but my buddy here in bako that I have been going with is headed to Alaska for a week for a little hunting & fishing trip. He has offered his Davis but im not comfortable taking his boat out yet as Im still learning the ins and outs of it and the ocean. shoot me an e-mail if you have room for two more passengers Liv2huntducks@yahoo.com Thank you! For one, shape is a tell tale. Pacific's have a very diamond shape. I believe the Pacific's are predominantly right eyed...I think that's right, maybe it's left...better look again! LOL! I don't think you'll find too many Pacifics in our area. The Pacifics are the BIG Daddios up in Alaska. |

Diablo has a 1 Mile Radius Security Zone. That means STAY OUT! Diablo will put a call out on the radio to notify you that you're in vioation. If you're not listening and don't respond, they'll just notify the Coast Guard. I have personally seen boats in it that left and a short time later saw the Coast Guard pick them up further down the coast. |

I have been checked so many times by Todd that I lost count. In his earlier days he was pretty tough especially if you were hunting. I have never received a ticket from him because I have always been legal which is the way we all should be so we don't attract attention as a haven for illegal fishing etc. If you have something to hide, he may find it. One year he snuck up on our camp way out by running deer where we were looking for pigs. It was the 2nd weekend of deer season and he thought we were poaching. He kept looking around the camp area for a deer and kept saying, "where's the deer guys" but never found one because there was none. He spent some time time hiking to where we were so he hoped he was going to get us but didn't because we we LEGAL. Remember, he has more authority than most of the other authorities. I for one wouldn't want to screw with him. He does work by the letter of the law. |

got boarded by F&G yesterday as well, and let me say these 2 guys were not nice about anything, no tickets because I wasn’t doing anything wrong, they just made me feel like a criminal , going through all my stuff, I follow every rule, read the regs, ect. It is one thing to come over and do a check but and open search and rude comments I was shocked by, and again not nice either of these guys were. cueball is a good name for the fish nazi, long story short I just hate being treated like a criminal for doing what i love to do, it just kinda takes the fun out of the day. With that being said i don’t hate all F&G most are polite but sometimes they come off with an attitude from the beginning, the 2 yesterday out of Port were at best not professional Does anyone else feel the same way about being boarded and searched or am I over re-acting? |

We left too early to get bait out of Morro Bay so we had to fish halibut with frozen bait. We went to the pea patch and had agreat day on the water. Two large soles, 3 keeper lings (threw back 5) lots of assorted rock fish. We had several halibut strikes but couldn't hold them. F&G boarded us to but were great guys. There were lots of whales and dolphins in the water. It's great to get out again. |

Had a slow steady pic on assorted rock fish Saturday up at Cape San Martin. Not as wide open on the reds as last week. We caught a 10 lb cab and lings were plentiful. Water color has cleared up. There are some big salmon in the area which could mean the counts in the delta were low because the salmon stayed in the ocean becuase of the low rainfall. Lots of whales and a few orcas around. The SST is not looking good for the albacore. Bob Hather |

chip, The other warden was Jason, met your wife at walmart; she was getting a license. I fished pt sal yesterday. there was tons of squid in the area hitting shrimpflies. also a good number of mackeral in the area. I dropped a sabiki and loaded in seconds. I had unexperienced folks on the boat and had them drop the squid back down for no luck on the possibility of wsb. |

Read the posts from Sat and took the boat to Avila for a shot at the flatties. Got a 1/2 scoop from Deke and headed up to the patch. Found some great drifts for one short and four legals 25-28". After the Cape San Martin run yesterday, this boy is tired but my wife and I are on a fish diet for a while. Looks like a good season for us around here. Back to the tree work for five days. DFG came aboard and asked if we had any rockfish and we did not as we threw all of them back which was good because we were fishing 2 rods each. They (Todd and the cueball) were totally polite. |

Jim there just isnt a lot of structure around S.B. for lings. Best bet would be the Channel Islands. Lots of lings at Port San Luis. |

JIM try for halibut off Henreys beach a few miles west of the harbor. It is the beach at Los Positos Dr. There is a restaurant there to use as a landmark. Also Goleta beach or Naples reef. |

Your right, Nick Twinfin: If you've ever seen the panga guys in la paz ( bay of dreams ) or anywhere for that matter... they just fill up the front of the boat with water, throw the bait in... a 5 gal. bucket is all you need... and a throw net... THOSE GUYS ARE GOOD!!! |

Great to here baits in...and the halibut right behind them... speaking of bait heres my 2 cents...Never over crowd your bait tank or it will die... a 1/2 scoop is plenty on most skiffs your better off going back for another 1/2 scoop later... most every time Ive bought a whole scoop Ive ended up tossing it out in the bay... theres another option when just putting on 1/2 scoop... that leaves room incase you want to motor over to the pier and jig up some of those smelt the halibut love those damn things...as far as the bait being to large that shouldnt be a problem, big halibut wont mind... I promise! |

As far as the bait tank goes, I used one on my 15 ft. aluminum today. I didn't have any pump and I manually drained and filled my tank. Not ONE BAIT DIED ALL DAY! We nailed a nice 17lb 'but and some good lings. All the old timers gave us a hard time, but we produced the KISS (keep it simple stupid) way. Deke provided da kine. I am sure billy boy does just as well. Long story short, don't blame it all on those guys, they work hard to get us the bait. |

As a matter of fact...as a rookie..I dont know if I need a scoop or a half scoop...I buy bait for halibut and for Albacore...So when I asked Deke this morning, do I need a scoop for 2 guys to fish today... he said no, a half scoop will do you just fine....and he was absolutely right...He could have made another 15.00 from me....but he was honest..I got layed/laid? off my job last night due to the economy, but I still tipped Deke...because I appreciate these guys a ton..... |

Darby and Doug.....Marty and Deke...they do all that they can to make our time out on the water as good as it can be...I appreciate the heck out of these guys...Hey, bait dies...I have never blamed the guys that stayed up all night catching it for us....and then being up at 5 AM to sell it to us... I want to thank FISHMASTER....and all here that gave me the basics of bounceballing...Bob Gannon of course who is my fish Guru....The info. that you all share to all of us certainly helps me out....We fished PSL....and we got 3 Halibut...27" 25" and 24"....And I caught the very first one as soon as I dropped down the bounce ball rig with the Dodger followed by a trap rigged sardine... the next two came on a sardine with a 3 oz. weight...bite was at 11:00 AM It was a great day....thanks to our fishing pros...that help us ....others.... to learn.. |

Chip makes a good point. To much flow actually kills or "washes" the bait. Ideal flow is 15 to 20 minutes to fill up your bait tank. Also it helps to have the infill pointed sideways to create a slight circular water flow. This encourages the bait to swim in a circle against the flow instead of aimlessly bouncing around, running into the sides where they bump their noses and die. Some people blame the bait but it's really their tank. The bait does take a beating when it's caught in a net, crowded and scooped onto the boat, crowded off down a shoot into the reciever and then crowded again and scooped onto your boat. If your tank is hard on them they are not going to last long. I have tried all kinds of bait tanks in the last 30 years and unless you can get 60 gal+ deck tank, the best bait tank you can buy are those bags that hang off the stern - by far. |

Got a load of sardines from doug this morning and headed up to cape san martin for a great ride up. A little slow in the a.m. but it turned on real well for easy limits for the two of us. Got into a wide open ripper on the three pound yellows and caught and released at least twenty in 15 minutes or so. The left over bait was still alive in the parking lot at 4:00 p.m. so all that bull about poor bait is just that - bull. Yes they were beat up a little but we only lost about ten all day. Many people have way too much water flowing into their bait tanks which decreases the life of bait. A minimum of 15 minutes turnover time for bait tank water is key. And yes a 40 gallon tank helps. |

Evening All We launched 46 boats today with 3/4 limit avg. 30+ Lings and 60+ halibut. From the lighthouse to the pea patch looked like opening day of salmon season. The flatties looked like they were still bitin' good. Some went to the river with no luck. The purisima rockcod was wide open again with full limits and plenty of fat lings. Homer and I will be back at 5-5:30 Deke should have a fresh load of bait in the morning. He's out right now. Good Fishin Marty |

Tim and all here is my best halibut spot: Between the Pismo pier and the Santa maria river in 20-100 ft. of water !! The neat feature about the Maptech site is the cursor reads out Lat/Lon so you can pick a likely spot and put it in your GPS and check it out. |

To add another resource for maps, check out sailvector.com Huge database of all naut. charts, easy navigation. If you know the NOAA chart number, click it, or use the find tool in your browser to search. I found it through using Skyvector.com (for aeronautical charts) http://www.sailvector.com/ I have wasted so many hours looking at numerous charts... |
