Matt, regaurding the ficht motor, I haven't heard anything good about them other than ficht is f***ed. Not my opinion just what I heard.I know a guy that has a ficht with probably less than a couple hundred hrs. or less on it and his e.c.m. went out, 2800.00 for recoditiond one!He is repowering instead. The thing is practicly brand new and he's dumping it.I would do more research. |

Suggestion; Since Hugh has posted his e-mail address I suggest that , instead of wasting space on this site with futile attempts to change his mind, we talk to him direct and get back to the real business at hand...fishing reports. SST/Chlorophyll: Excellent shots yesterday. We have more clean warm water out here this year, already, than we did all of last season. All we need is some calm weather to go prospecting. With the first Albacore reported yesterday and good conditions close in it is shaping up to be a good year. Hugh will be happy to know that there is a limit on albacore so we can't deplete them by reporting where they are. Robb; What do you mean by bubble ? Stacy; What do you mean by altimetry ? |

thanks. after looking at the sst today you have to like our chances after this wind lays down. i think harrell had a post about looking for warming water pushing into buchon and that's what's happening. in fact that area and out to and above the donut looks decent. it looks to be the same water the sea angel got them. |

TWINFIN yes there are paralles to the surfing world where we can get online and read about a swell coming days in advance, we know what direction and what beaches will be affected , then before heading to the beach we check the web cam just make sure. so with the knowledge comes no wasted fuel or time in support of saving the plant but no more pulling up to an empty parking lot. It is to be said that org. such as Surfriders have cleaned and opened accesss to more beaches by members that keep informed by web sites such as this. to reply to the post that i am a sad angry fisherman. no just someone that is willing to put his ass on the line in the effort to find a balance on building a effective, supportive blog while saving some of the purity. the replies on both sides of the issue are healthly for the sport with no disrespect |

hugh, you seem confused or sad or something. If I am sad or threatened or insecure in my angling abilities or feel divided against my peers or misinformed about a lot of things,or I feel bummed out because someone I deemed unworthy by my standards didn't pay their dues just like me or the people I know, or maybe doesn't have a family fishing history like mine, & they learn something I think should be secret, or they catch some fish from a spot I caught some at before & thus cause state closures, then I like to cheer myself up by going fishing or talking to people about fishing,it seems to turn my frown upside down. Remember it's just my opinion though,Jeff |

Hugh do you really think Sports fishing is what is causing the salmon numbers to decrease. there are many factors in that not just sport fisherman. I believe that sport fishing has minimal effect on the numbers. |

Hugh, with all due respect....if you are serious about declaring informative posts detrimental to the future of sportfishing, shouldn't you also be pointing a finger at Furuno, Garmin, Lowrance, Raymarine and all the others who make FINDING fish so much easier? I do understand your concern, and would say that the most rewarding fishing comes from those discoveries you make on your own...too much information is not necessarily a good thing. For the most part, I think most, if not all, of the folks on this board are willing to help each other out...and not sell the farm to do it. Better targets for your concern vis a vis the issue of closures are abundant....and more deserving of that concern than the group of fisherman on this board. |

Hugh, I understand your concern. I frequent a fly fishing board also and nearly every member of that site would agree with you. However, there is one big difference between their situation and ours. The fly fishers that I deal with typically target freshwater fish that live in streams and rivers. Too much pressure can literally destroy a stream for good. The ocean, on the other hand, has the capacity to replenish itself due in part to it's size, as well as the ability of fish from other close localities to "fill the void" left by a fish being removed. I'm sure we would all agree the single biggest threat to this activity/way of life/means of survival that we love is closures. They're a lot like gun control - first they take one zone, but you know in the end they want to take away your right to fish altogether. And, like gun control, the way to defeat the machine is through shear numbers. If a beginner reads a post on this site and gains a little knowledge that he/she can use to catch fish and thus become addicted to fishing, then they're one more person that we'll have on our side when it comes time to stand up and fight. True, most of the people who read these reports are not newcomers, but sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. One more thing. If actual FACTS were being used in determining whether or not an area will be closed (i.e. a reliable way to determine that fish populations were on a rapid decline) then I would be compelled to jump on your band wagon, but every single person who reads these posts knows that area closures are based on complete and absolute absurdity. Two years ago they said that MPA's were a response to fish populations having declined. Then sampling from the "soon to be closed" areas were compared to samplings from the immediate areas surrounding those closed zones and, low and behold, they discovered that MORE fish were caught from the areas going to be closed. Then they flip-flopped and said that these areas needed to be closed not because of low fish counts, but because they would serve as a "safe haven" for the fish already there. If they want to close an area they can come up with a reason without our help. The REAL problem is bad politics, and decreasing fishing pressure here or somewhere else won't fix that. The battle is underway and troop recruitment is the best solution. Respectfully, Jeremy P |

Hugh - I'm glad it's only your opinion too. You're just one of those guys who like to poach information and hoard it to yourself. It's a big ocean...are you afraid of someone catching your fish. Don't worry there are others like you who feel the same way, but they usually don't post anything, just poach information. Really? My opinion is that sport fishing pressure has nothing to do with it. I also agree that blogging helps keep the sport alive. How else can people be heard in a common place amongst people with common or opposite opinions. Get over it and learn to accept it. Maybe post a fish report someday instead of just reading them! It feels so good. |

Hugh, I guess I am confused as to the motive behind your post? Are you trying to gather an entourage of antibloggers? I understand some of your concern regarding the "putting your time in" involved in fishing. Unfortunately this is the age of information dissemination, which is notorious for spreading the word on things beyond the realm of fishing. It does not take away from the hard workers, but it does make those secret spots that much sweeter. The parallels with the surfing world are uncanny. While there are some regulars on this board who share information, there are many who keep their lips tightly sealed. I think all of us forget that there are many "lurkers" who do capitalize on this board, but it is not the intention of the vital many to give away all of the secrets. I assure you there are many secrets left to be discovered. This is a large area with copious amounts of fishing opportunities. While some may piggyback on other's successes, the true fisherman will be rewarded for their hard work. I really hope you are not attributed something as complex as the salmon issue to posting on board, because that would be a little bit ignorant! I respect that it is your own opinion, and I could not forego my own. Tight lines Nick |

Hugh, we share this site as a respective effort to keep the green house gasses down to a minimum by lowering the fuel used by hard working fisherman. For instance, I posted earlier that I caught a "shit load of fish" (a whole bunch) in shallow water by placing my boat into kelp patches. This post might help others from "fucking around all day" (searching) for fish. Perhaps, we respective fisherman give too much information. However, it is simply what we do as a collective effort. By the way, I am just having fun at your expense. Peace / Love / Dope |

harrel. i dont recall the name nor do i remember any bill that was being pasted that was to close the bay off to fishing and what funds the site spent defeating the said bill. i do know we can love something to death. i know that we have lost salmon season from what i call blog fishing pressure. everyday the fish are re targeted with every electronic device and then broadcasted to folks not even on the water. anyone.if they were there they would know and deserve to be on a hot bite. JEFF. it is my point that the blog does tell them depth, and how to's. ( just look at the ball bouncing blogs. did u see the fleet fishing halibut after a one day bite? . i did appreciate that all responces were kept respectfull as i will keep mine. it is only my opinion |

Hugh; Do you know who Lucille Packard was ?? Here is a paraphrase of her infamous statement; "I want those damn fishermen off my bay." (Monterey) She said that before this site was born ! She had and now her daughter does, the resources to make it happen. This site and others like it have kept them from closing down fishing completely. |

Hmmmmmm... So the purpose of this site, is just to brag about, look what I caught and too bad you dont have any friends to tell where to fish. So what if they know where the area is. Do they know what to do when they get there..... Current, Depth, Bait, etc. Someday you might just wish someone was close enough to help if you need some assistance. Do unto others...... |

i want to know if anyone shares my concern with sites such as this giving too much fishing infomation. many of us oldtimers(5th generation) have to live with closure after closure due to fishing pressure. if the blogger fisherman are unwilling to fish the "off days" or spend time enjoying the ocean learning for themselves where halibut spawn they may not need to be out there. |

Got a half scoop from deke this a.m. (15 bucks). He gave us at least 25 dines and even asked if that was enough. Since my wife and I were only fishing a couple of hours, I told him that was plenty. If there are four guys on a boat, you should get a scoop if you can hold it depending on what you are fishing for. |

OK...I dont want to start a big fued about the bait guys, I know they have to make a living, I appreciate their hard work and know that fuel isnt free..I also would not want their job..with that said, can some body break it down to me real simple like.... when buying bait, how much is a half scoop? by this I mean how much should it cost and how many dips of the net do you get? How much is a scoop, and what does a scoop consist of? I figure the anweres to these questions could keep a lot of people (like myself) from complaining on this board. once again, bait guys...I appreciate your efforts. Its just that last week I paid 20 bucks for about 20 big sardines. If the going rate is a dollar a sardine then I paid the going rate. |

Well, absolutly beautiful day on the water today. Had 37 boats out with 3/4 to full limits, 24 Lings, and 27 halibut (Counting Barbara's 10) We couldn't launch the bigger boats until we got a little more water. We'll have minus tide in the morning again so we probably won't get started until about 6-6:30. Just got off the phone with Deke and he will let me know within the hour if he'll have bait in the morning. I also ran down with Roger (patriot) to the S.M. River this morning with my boat and pulled my dungy pots I set last week for a couple nice limits. Good Fishin Marty |

Went out of Port today trying for halibut. Had to wait until about 6:30 or 7:00 to launch due to the minus tide. We did some ball bouncing a little in the morning and then we tried drifting frozen bait with no luck "no live bait". We tried a little bottom fishing but the bite was off when we tried so we bounced ball again late mourning early afternoon caught one keeper halibut, but right after that the wind kicked up and made it real tuff to fish so we went in. Fish was caught in about 50 to 60 foot water. |

Aloha boys and girls, There is a good ono bite going on over off of Kona right now. While trying to pick up aku for bait with light outfits (20#)and small hoochies, we kept hooking up onos that would fight great and then, bing! they bit through the line. Also caught shibis doing this. We put on the 50# rigs and heavy leaders and started catching 40# onos right outside Honokohau harbor. What a blast. I will post a picture when I get home. Great eating! I look forward to the albacore season. Will |

ALBACORE PROSPECTS This year is really shaping up great and early. Bob and Stacy's reports confirm the conditions out there. So now we watch for the temp breaks and clean water and weather windows. We still need some clear days to see the big picture. San Diego has not been reporting much in the way of albacore and that may be a good thing for us, we'll see. |

the water was absolutely flat. we began the day at the ab farm for halibut. no luck then decided to head out in search of tuna. we ran out about 10-15 miles from pt estero, i left my terrafin in the pickup and made a call to mike and harrell for numbers to run to. thanks. the warmest water i metered was 60.8 at 35-20 x 121-24, it was clean at a current line. came back in and boated 1 halibut in 65' of water. i'll be back out on the reel deal in the a.m. |

Evenin All We had dozen out with nice bottom fish 3/4 to full limits, 8 lings and 7 halibut. The hoist is operating fine and nipped that problem without too much damage. We'll be down at 5-5:30 to get you in the water. OK with all the LFT talk, I will be willing to come down earlier but, I have to have at least 3-4 boats going out. Last year I had some guys (Not saying who) talk me in to coming down at 3:30 and not one showed. Anyway if any of you want to try call me at the launch and we'll work it out. Deke did not find any bait today but will be back trying in the am Good Fishin Marty |

I ran out 32 kt mi on a 260 from MB for looking for albacore today. I only had 5 hours to play so I didn't run any further. The amount of sea life out there is massive. Bait everywhere, mostly down about 100 ft. There were whales, porpoise, turns, sealions. Water was not purple but clear enough for albacore and varied from 60-63 degrees. Most of the birdlife was just sitting so it wasn't feeding time. Also saw a shark and some fish meter marks. We bait fished some patties and baitballs but no fish. I trolled for about 2 hours. Wish I had more time because conditions were great. Bob Hather |

Just talked to Stacy. He was out 25+ west of MB. They found clean 60 degree water but no action, Bob Hather was also out there but no detailed report. I will let them post details. Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone thinking of running out tomorrow. |

NICK, unusual but possible. Bonito have been in San luis Bay/pismo area in early June ,right into about 20-25feet of water but I havent seen it since mid seventies and then only 1year. We have seen plenty off pt.sal and santa maria river in july, anything is possible but not common in past. I have caught alby into about 3/4 mile off morro entrance but that was one late season fish, he coulnt dive down much when he ran, too shallow! Might happen again but 8-10 miles or so is extremely close around here historically I believe. Others were catching them inshore of us. I saw lots of fish caught right off of buchon buoy by others. again , not often, extremely rare. but last years bonito bite was also a "black swan" event, until it happened and kept happening. I never got any those nearshore yellowfin but I have seen them caught offshore of morro while on exploratory trip. |

Yeah lets hope those bonnies come in close like they did in November. That was a hell of a good time. Has anybody ever seen them come close this time of year? What is the closes the albies have ever come to the coast? |

Haven't posted in awhile and couldn't seem to use my old account, had to re-register............ I heard on the radio that they're serving up FRESH caught albacore on the BBQ for the Morro Bay Music Festival this week-end. Anybody heard of the commercial guys bringing any home? Water looks real fishy out 60-100 NM |

Been talking to some commercials fishing the bank for blackcod. Big school of bonita seen yesterday about ten miles out. On the bank blue water and lots bait balls 30 - 60 fathoms down. One guy said something was pushing the bait up where sheerwaters were diving on it. Said he was busy so didn't look to close but it definitely wasn't porpoise. |

Fish caught under the authority of a sport fishing license cannot be bought, sold, traded or bartered in any manner (FGC Section 7121). I wouldn't post on the internet that you are trading fish in California, unless you bought that bag of fish at the store. |

For those of you that make your own jiggs, They can easily be powder coated with a heat gun. You can get powder coat from any powder coat shop. I traded a bag of fish at one shop and a $20 dollar bill at another. It is way better than a rattle can.

Evening All Well we had a little problem with the hoist this morning. The drum brake had a broken wire on the accuating solenoid and the brakes fried. We were not supplied with any spare parts when the hoist was redone last year. I did get some ordered today but, they will not be in until next week. I was able to have the brake plate relined by the guys down at Coast Clutch and Brake. I just picked it up and will be installing it first thing in the am. I probably will not be launching until at least 'till 7-7:30. Sorry for the inconvienence but, I'll try and get it up and runnin' asap Good Fishin Marty Oh yeah Deke should have bait by the time we start launchin |

Nice to see your still playing with the Chlorophyll stuff Harrell. I Remember when we first starting doing overlays when Fullspeed was born. Sure has come a LONG ways since then. Hope to hear your voice on the water this summer. Dustin |

SST/Chlorophyll We now have good temps in our usual tuna areas (58-63)but not real clean inside the 122 line. I watch the NOAA SST/Chlorophyll sites to get the latest info which can sometimes be earlier than the posting on Terrafin or Tempbreak sites. I have a mailing list of people that are interested in chasing albacore and I send these shots to them. If you are not on this list but want me to send these shot to you just send me an e-mail and I will add you to the list. |

Not enough thanks goes out to those guys that take the time and money to make that run early in the season and come back and post a report. I know a few on here use to join me, Hather has always put in his time and shared reports ... good to see some motivation back on this board. Really is about the hunt .... And buddy boat! The more coverage the better on an early season temp break. Nothing better than calling another boat in to the first fish if the year. Glass is half full this year in my mind. Way to many dry runs ....... Lets hope! D |

Let me know when you run Mike, I could use a 50 mile run of salt air and Cpt Morgan. I put in my time running past 60 for a couple fish, someone should go take a peek ...... the drought has to come to an end someday! |

Good Morning All, I'm planning on launching out of Leffingwell with a 13 1/2' Gregor when the swell is down. Does anyone have a map with the long/lat numbers so I can stay out of the non-fishing spots in that area? Thanks in advance, Paul Boe |

I am a new member but i have been viewing the reports for a few years now. I have fished out of MB ever since I can remember, mainly for Halibut but also for the usual rock cod and what not. I have always wanted to fish out of PSL! The only thing stopping me is I dont know the spots. I have a 14ft valco that I will be fishing out of. I have heard a lot of mention of the Pea Patch. I am just lookong for some pointers so I dont have to go out and get skunked until i find my own spots. I am also wondering about fishing the kelp beds of shell beach...... as far as what is there. I am mainly looking to target Halies. Any hotspots in the bay? I have always used live bait but have heard a lot of talk lately about swimbaits for halibut???? Any pointers on that would awesome! I would appreciate if i could get some info shot to my email joedaddy2401@yahoo.com Thank you look forward to responces and further posts...... |
