Just talked to a commercial fishing buddy who was on the escarment today - inside the donut. Didn't see anything there but talked to a boat on the Rod who said "jumpers for miles with bluefin mixed in". That probably means a puddle of fish here and there but they're there. I really like the idea of a two day with an overnight at Miguel in Tyler's!

Yeah, but I'd probably get your Votes!! I wouldn't know what to do if soemone wasn't pissed off at me. Someone besides my wife.

No Harrell, we'll let those guys who sell that bait make that deal. We're in Morro so show 'em to us (or someone at Virgs) in the boat, not the back of a truck or the cleaning table. I'll set you up next time you go out.

So much for political correctness. Don't ever run for public office or your last post will show up in the headlines. You will have pissed off PETA and all the NOW crowd, though I'm sure you don't give a s---. Right on, bro.

Well, I for one dont believe I will be fishing with Cracka. Jim, why is it that you always have 2-3 other men with you when you go fishing into the "virgin land" but wait until you clear the harbor before asking... So, how far do you guys think you can swim? Is this your version of getting stuck in the backwoods? I'll just stay on my own boat, thanks.

Two scoops of bait to the first boat that shows me or Doug 10+ albacore caught out of Morro Bay! These are the first conditions I've seen so far that get me interested in albacore. Looking at the water breaks, temps and plankton, I'd say the 1908 (78 Miles) has fish. John says start at the donut (51 mi) at daylight and head for the 1908 if nothing is happening. That's from the master. Also the Rodriguez (80 mi) looks the best and I hear some fish were caught there today - you know how rumors are though. I'd start at Arguello canyon. It's on the way there looks really good with a hard clean break.

Going baitfishing again tonight so maybe some fresh stuff for the morning. The last load of chovies is still curing up but most the weak stuff has died off by now.

Choosing a bait. I like chovies for chum- they stay nearer the boat where sardines tend to spread out and take the school with them. If you have to chum with sardines pop an eyeball out with your thumbnail first then they swim in circles or just chunk it. Most the world, outside of California, chunks albacore and it works great. But I like sardines best for hook baits - stronger and larger. big bait = big fish you just have to let the fish eat it longer before you engage. Otherwise picking a good bait is like picking a good woman. Why start with an ugly one? You want one that's active, hard to catch with all the parts in all the right places and no bloody nose.

It was definitely the Rodriquez mount. They call it "The Rod". There haven't been tuna reports from there in years. It's definately a trek but you can pull a 2 day and spend the night in a protected cove at Miguel.

Yea I always forget how to spell the lake so I short cut it ,
If you are listining to the radio when you are out fishing , listen for the FISH ASSASIN OR THE FISH WISPERER, my brother and his son fish the lake at least three days a week , making a nice check every month from the AVISTA power co.
Good luck up there.

Tim
I think thats what we call fishing, FISHING REPORT FROM S.D. AND SOUTH
JR and I left Sun afternoon , headed to SD stoped and picked up the other two of are crew, hit the boat at 0100, Owner waiting with BAITED BREATH , we fired her up and headed out for the bait dock , filled the bait tank with three scoops of big dines and chovies , bait cost 75.00 . Ran south till gray light , dirty water at 35 and 40 , put the lines in washed the gear till we hit 55 miles , was a mixed swell with 6 to 8 swell, not comfortable but nothing for that boat , the owner is from texas , so he was thinking about throwing up , the other two guys were green and hurling , JR and I just having a good time , the bad part is the break was at 80 miles , the owner wanted no part of that , we turned around and headed back , found a couple patties on the return , I got a 20# off one , Jr got a 10# and one of the hurlers managed to drag his ass topside for one other fish ,all YT we were in the berth at the YACHT CLUB at 1600 , and of course the chummers were better.
We fished the kelp beds the next day for short WSB , calicos and lots of seal hits ,
The fishing SUCKED , but he company was topdrawer ,some of our crew just was not feeling up to PAR , I dont think they are up to another CABO RUN Any time soon.
Guess we just gonna have to go to get our ALBIS from half moon.

WEATHER Good news for a change. The wind is coming down ahead of schedule and it looks like both wed and thurs will be good up and down the coast.

That water off Monterey and Halfmoon held up well in the wind and there was a report of 8 LFT caught saturday at 36 miles from Halfmoon in sloppy seas.

Tuna Prospecting

This week is not looking good. Windy for another week except for wednesday but the latest chlorophyll shows mostly dirty water out to the 122:00 lon line. Maybe next week.

I got a good chlorophyll off of Coast Watch this morning and sent it out to the "list" If you are not on the list, send me an e-mail and I will send you a copy and put you on the list.

Blackcod – My new personal favorite smoked fish. Someone gave me a few and Sharon Rowley suggested don’t bother eating it but that it is good smoked. Boy was she right! Better than salmon! I’m looking into the regulations for recreational take but you can get it from the local fish docks and fillet it yourselves. It is very oily but supposed to be very healthy, omega 3’s.

1 cup brn sugar
½ cup bakers sugar (white)
1 cup soy
2 cups salt water
1 tbs. Sea salt
~ 1 TBS black pepper

If you like a little kick add some sarachi (not sure if I spelled that right but it’s the hot sauce in the oriental section with the green cap and a rooster on the front – if you don’t know what it is you’re missing out!) or crushed red pepper flakes – or both. I also added a touch of Italian spice mix to one batch and that was very nice.

Marinade in the refer for 12 to 15 hours. Put it in the smoker for 12 hours or more. Again it’s very oily so it doesn’t dry out like most fish. I forgot the first load for 15 hours and it’s wonderful. I put two loads of chips – one hickory to start (I don’t usually use hickory for fish) and one load of alder to finish. Remove from the racks and place on several layers of newspaper and paper towels at room temp over night to absorb the extra oils. Once you put it in the refrigerator it will firm up nicely.

Thanks in advance,

We had a half dozen boats out today with 3/4 to full limits 12 lings and 2 halibut.
Weather was tolerable today, the wind didn't start blowin till after noon. Looks hopeful for tommorrow. I want to apologize to all of you that went out last weekend and had to wait for the late launch time. I was on vacation and it was out of my control. I will not leave for the rest of the season. Homer and I will be in at 5:00-5:30 to start launching. Deke has a full load of bait for the weekend.

I am still working on the Halibut tournament.
It will be on July 25-26 with the BBQ on Sunday.
We are not going to get too crazy this year with
raffle prizes, but we will have a few good ones.
I might throw in a little Suzuki outboard into the prizes. The entry will probably be $80.00
per fisherman. (5.00 more thn last year)
We will pay 1st-5th place both days and an overall big fish winner. Prize money will be determined by total entries minus expences for the BBQ. So hope to see you all who participated in the past and some new faces as well. We are also thinking about a couple of other catgories like under 15' boats and one for kayaks.
Any questions call me at the store.
Good Fishin
Marty

Yeah Blackie,
Kona is really hurting also. Lots of fish, but no fishermen with the big $ to charter the boats. Maybe we need a fishing stimulus package, the other ones are working so well. All the stimulus I need is a trip out of Morro in my little boat.
Pray for tuna and some brains in DC.

ROB
The vessel now resides in SAN DIEGO at the SD yacht club , the ownew has decided that cabo was not profitable and we could utilize the boat more , if it were closer to us.
Things are not real good in CABO right now for the SPORT FISHING industry.

Weather/SST/Chlorophyll

Not looking good through next tuesday. The models are showing a one day break in the wind wednesday but the chlorophyll is showing a lot of dirty water in our areas. Doubt it will have cleaned up by wednesday. Will continue watching.

Evenin all
Slow day again today, wind lookin bad until the weekend. I'll have more info on the halibut tournament later in the week.(Fri.)
Harrell and the rest of you LFT hunters. If you guys want to go from PSL, I'd be willing to be down as early as you want and wait until the last boat comes in. Now that is provided that we get more than a couple three of you going. Make sure that you guys give me at least a 12hr. notice.
Anyway I hope they show up soon and close.
Hugh- Should be plenty of moorings no problem.
Good Fishin

ALBACORE PROSPECTS AND ALBACORE PROSPECTING.

I feel more optimistic right now than I have in the last three seasons. If you look at the SST/Chlorophyll shots of the area, where there were big counts of tuna, you will see as good a picture as you could ever want. All the attributes are there and best of all, there is/was a large body of fish "trapped" in that plume !
Looking at the most recent SST shots of our area I see a similar plume developing in our area solidly connected to the south west. When this lousy wind backs off we may have a shot at LFT. Which brings me to the PROSPECTING part of this post:
If we get the right conditions we should get 6-10 boats to go at the same time, fan out like five miles apart, and give it a thorough look see. It is way to easy for one or two boats to miss the fish. I know of four of us so far that will join in. Let me know if you are interested. My plan would be to go on a week day if possible.
I will be watching the weather and SST with anticipation.
