SST Fairly good SST last evening but no chlorophyll. There is a 60+ break as close as 20 miles and the temp break at the Rod has move in to 45nm. If only we had a chlorophyll. Weather Still no end in sight for the wind but the sunday forecast on the inside is a little better. |

Weekend Weather: The forecasts and computer models indicate continuing wind especially on the outside where we hope the albacore are waiting for us. The inside water for the halibut derby should be ok early with afternoon wind. As to what time it will get breezy is anyone's guess. The tide could be a factor sat am as it will be close to 0ft between 6-8 am. If you have a boat that draws a lot of water better get in line early or put it on a mooring friday. |

Sorry guys computer froze up yesterday Steve- We can get a 16 and under but you guys entry fees will be the prize money, like the other boats fees a small percentage will taken off for the bbq expences. Andrew- Sorry but, we have had this issue in the past and it got pretty heated. So everyone on a boat has to be entered in the tourney. I hope that doesn't change your mind about fishing. Jonathan- I have been opening every morning at 5:30am whether we have boats that early or not I think Deke has a handle on the furbag and net situations so he should have bait the rest of the year. Any way we launched 14 boats today with 3/4 limits and 10 halibut Any other questions about the tourney please call me at 595-7895 or 595-7214 Thanks and Good Fishin Marty |

On ball bouncing, I like to run my three way swivel w/ a 6' leader to my two pound ball. Then I run a one foot leader to my dodger, then an 8' leader to my hootchie. I send it down fast and it never gets tangled. Those halibut see it up high and react quick because its further away and they don't want it to get away. I go about 2.5 knots. |

FYI: Here is a link to Maptech that allows you to find Lat/Lon for almost anywhere. If you select "topo map" it shows the ocean bottom, if you want to pick a rock to fish or a sandy bottom for halibut no problem. This Lat/Lon feature has just recently returned to Maptech and best of all it is free. http://mapserver.mytopo.com/homepage/index.cfm?lat=35.1469404&lon=-120 .702563&scale=100000&zoom=100&type=1&icon=0&searchscope=dom&CFID=16847 3&CFTOKEN=13846332&scriptfile=http://mapserver.mytopo.com/homepage/ind ex.cfm&latlontype=DMS Weather/SST/Chloro: Bottom line is the weather sucks and there ain't no pictures. And the bad new is: don't see any light at the end of the tunnel for another week.Maybe a little hope that the wind will clear away the fog for at least a glimpse of what we may be missing !! |

my thought of extra passengers on boats entered in the tourney is the POTENIAL for problems. i dont think anyone would cheat but it opens it up to question. what is fishing. i would hate to bring an extra non entered passenger on board with me, and have someone say he watered the baits or handed me a rod, tied up a new rig or even handed me the gaff and be questioned on it. could someone drive the boat while i bounce balls? we wont be set up to judge such manners. whatever you decide marti i am still fishing. i want it to be fun for everyone. |

We are putting together a weekday 1.5 day charter trip out of Channel Islands to chase tuna at the rod as soon as the weather settles down. The boat is going to be the Pacific Islander and costs $5,000 with 24 people recommended. That comes out to only $208 per person. Exact dates are TBD and will probably be put together on only a couple of days notice if the weather opens up. The boat has plenty of weekday availability. I posted a thread on getbentsportfishing.com under the charter forum that you can respond to if interested. You can also email me at matthonea@gmail.com or call me at 805-453-7655. Let's do this! |

Yea, I left them Steve. Not a big deal, they were my back-up pair. Bouncing with 3way and Flasher/Dodger: Adjust your leader length if your tangling, and as Steve said ..... Make sure everything looks right before dropping down and do it slowly. Bottom then a couple cranks up untill you find that you are holding near bottom with lead in the sand. Good Luck in the tourny guys |

Dustin, Hey, did you leave your sunglasses in my boat? Just found them while cleaning it up on Friday. Live Report: Pablo has 3 flatties in the box by 8 a.m.!!! Matt, I had that same problem the 1 time I tried bounce-balling. The advice I got was to let your rig down SLOW...do it like "pulls" when you are fishing for salmon with quick release lead. Hope that helps. Marty, So are you having a under 16' division? lat, steve |

Matt; I usually just use the sliding egg sinker and red bead just above the swivel and 15lb. floro to the hook, for the reasons you just stated. I've seen a skipper buddy of mine just put on an egg sinker and a hook no swivel and do well... I only fish the stinger rig when I'm just in the sand as they snag on everything... And you break the stingers off...Hope that helps...That Halibut Fishing |

Flat fish rigging...My 2 cents... I've never known halibut to be bashfull, usually if thier there, they will eat...I think its all In (not overreacting) on the bite. And the hook set. I think it is important that whatever rig you choose as long as its a sliding rig you can better your odds...I'm with you guys, you want to just thumb the spool while out of gear as they dont like resistance...resist the urge to set the hook @ the first bump...I also agree when you decide to set the hook click it in gear let the drift bring you tight then stick um...What Im personally still struggling with is how long you let them chew on it? I feel it can be quite some time. Because somehow even when you've set the hook (you better not have buttoned down the drag) They will always sound when they see the boat for the 1st time. I think most halibut are lost boatside when they snap you off because your drag is too tight...on that first run...Back to the point...I feel those bastards just hold the bait in thier mouths and dont fully eat it...cuz on many occasion when I fished them at San Martin Island where you can see everything. Waters clear and shallow...I've brought them along side on the second run knowing I've got them... Only two have them open thier mouth and let the bait swim out right out of gaff range... Thats what makes it so additive for me... I LOVE IT !!! |

Albacore Report- Ran uphill 90-miles from Ventura out to the Rodriguez in very Poor weather (blowing NW 15 to 30-kts) not the 10 to 15 as forecasted. Could only make 7 to 10-kts the last 50-miles to reach the bank. Caught 3 Albacore (two boats) fishing just a few hours. Building wind drove us off the bank early so could not expand coverage. Clean water and 59 to 61.7 degrees. Albies are there so with good weather it could happen. Off to Kona for 10-days to chase big fish. |

i am still old school fishing a single hook for halibut. it is like a darby says" i like my bait like my woman, they have to move" and a single hook helps. the trap hook seems to bleed the bait. the sercret to a single hook set is open gear and let-em eat. BEFORE any hook set slightly lift the rod tip to feel the fish.if not let more line out, if so, click in gear, point the rod tip, drift till line slack gone and set hard. miss some but at least you'll get more strikes. marti dont think any system is fair for every one but how about the side bet go 50.00 a boat and 20.00 for each passenger. i fish alone and will have to put up the 100 while another boat we 4 people pays 25.00 to win the same. kick it around some. see you soon. ps. harbour always nicer when Tami in town |

Steve rigs for halibut the exact way I was taught from some of the best sticks on the coast. Sad to say that I forget how to tie that style of trap rig from being off the water for so long. IT WORKS Nice to see your still putting meat in the freezer Steve. Timmy, Why is the Tailchaser not out at the ROD already? Get the old man .... lets go. |

MIKE, If you lauch night before, moor, and leave early Port San Luis will get you to the Rodriguez and back a quite few miles difference when multiplied by 2, but the wind factor on the north return is still an issue. Like you, I factor the wind into that run up there with fish presence. I have been lucky and on runs down there but on shorter ones in same direction ive gotten the cold salt waterboarding treatment and dont desire it for 70 miles after tasting it for 50. port san luis parking can be awful under the new arrangement so you might want to avoid any friday -sunday if the fish are bitting. harbor people are helping out but if the wind lays down and the fish bite you may have to park your trailer a mile away. see you out there when the wind sets down. |

Joe, you are probaly correct on the fact leaving out of Santa Barbara. The Rod is about 85 miles from Morro, the problem is I live in Visalia and there is no direct way to get to Santa Barbara. I can almost get to San Diego by the time I go around to Santa Barbara. So it is easier for me to go from Morro on a calm day. My boat kicks it at 35 miles and hour. I made the run earlier this year and found nothing but water! So I will have to wait on nicer weather. I wanted to go Sunday to Santa Cruz, but the wind is going to blow and the swell is going to build with a mixed swell to boot.So I have promised a few guys a bottom fish/halibut trip in the morning. |

Jonathan, I have tried several rigs for Halibut, but the one that I have had the most luck with is just the standard reverse dropper loop. I think it helps to have that weight hitting the bottom, kicking up dust, and making vibrations. That is one of the reasons bounce balling is so effective. When I am on a Halibut drift I leave my reel in free spool and use my thumb to contol the line, letting just enough out to stay on the bottom. When I feel a pick up, I lift my thumb off to let out line, slowly count to 5, put the reel in gear and when the line gets tight - set the hook. |

My rig and technique is a little different from this, but this is a good starting point. I use a sliding drop sinker ABOVE the swivel and a trap rig. Plus I usually let them chew it for a good 10 count with sardines...chovies you probably wouldn't have to wait as long. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfQTvdcpVEY |

mike I think the best way to get to the rodrigues is out of santa barbara, head up toward san miguel and anchor out for the night, to leave early in the morning. of course wheather permitting. i beleive its 60 to 70 miles. |

I was thinking of going on Sunday, but the weather window is closed for Sunday. To far to go with the iffy forcast, 80 miles no problem on the boat, but guest up to 25 plus, plus building seas perdicted in the afternoon on the trip home, up hill is a killer and not a smart thing to do. I will have to put it on hold, Monterey is going to be the same.Just can't hit the lotto and stay home to fish! |

I can remember trolling just outside Hazard Canyon in a 16' Bayrunner and catching 40-50lb albacore on these old funky hex head feathers. That was probably in the early 80's. Last El Nino we were catching monsters right in the salmon area outside the rock with 12" sardines for bait. Woody caught a 74 lb monster that year. He also tels me of catching 100+ lb yellowfin in the same area in the 80's. Bring on El Nino. |

Should the Good Lord bless us with a good Tuna Season, are there any canners out there that would split the take? And what is a fair split? Lets all hope that this is a problem...I am off to light some candles. |

Mike, I was a serious bass fisherman until my boss, Milt Ratslof took me tuna fishing the time. After catching my first tuna I sold the bass boat. I even included the importance of tuna fishing and owning a boat trustworthy enough to go after them when I proposed to my wife....we were living about 500 miles from the coast at the time, she had no idea what she had got herself into now that we are living back on the Central Coast.... Got to love her though, she put of Lasik eye surgery and sold a horse so I could buy my boat....I am on my 3rd boat in 6 years... Top that Grillo....lol |

My very first Albacore was caught off of Pecheco rock about six miles out. I knew nothing of Albacore, I was bottom fishing in 300 feet of water and a guy came buy trolling feathers. I asked him what was he fishing for and he said Albacore? So I followed him out to where there was a fleet of boats and then I was hooked. First Albacore was a58 lb on bait and I can not stop thinking about hooking my next fish. This is why I answer the question, why go 80 miles out for a shot for Tuna, its in the blood! |

mike. i had to give you a 5 star rating on your post. i so remember pulling on 60lb fish that were so greasy. 15 fish days with virgs all while in view of land was the norm. i think darby still has a picture of a childhood friend , danny kellog with a el nino LFT on his shops wall. i ran out of money that year and had to trade darby a hunting trip on the ranch. life was good. |

Matt, we caught Albacore 6 to 12 miles off shore, 40 to 60 lbs was the norm. The party boats would bing back 500 fish.It was unreal and I caught Tuna as late as December 5th. So pray for El Nino. |

Hugh just looked at the site. Nice water to run up in but didn't do as well as last time up there. Interesting drift, seemed like it changed every time we moved. Did get some big reds and coppers but no legal lings. |

I keep on reading predictions of an El Nino event happening soon. I have never fished the Central Coast on an El Nino so I am not sure how that will effect us. Can someone please tell me how this would effect our offshore fishing. Thanks |

Greetings, Fished PSL in the skiff again today. Got a nice scoop of dines from Deke and head N. Very nice ocean, but confused NW then SW winds in the morning. Wind picked up pretty good around 10, but then laid off a little and it was only blowing 10 knots when we left at 3. Ended the day with 4 keeper halibut (1 24", 3 26-28"), two shorts, 2 16" sandsole, and way too many raked baits. Probably missed at least another 4 or 5 halibut...arrr!!! Fish caught in 40-60' of water. Vis was OK outside, but pea soup green inside. best fishes, steve |

Fished yesterday out of Halfmoon between the Pioneer and the Guide for 9 fish. It was one those "you should have been here yesterday" trips. They had 20 + the day before us. |

i checked out the close temp break per the 14 july terrafin, there was no discernible break. I found clean 58 deg water about 15 miles out of psl with birds and porpoise. I trolled for about an hour with no luck before heading in for rockfish |

Adam, yes 12' from dorsal fin to tail...The only 2 parts I saw was a big dorsal fin and about 12' back was a tip of a tail sticking up, they were very dark collored almost black. it surfased about 40 foot from my boat....I wonder what the ratio is from nose to dorsal. I can post the lat/long of white rock if your interested, its on my gps |

Thought for anybody thinking about 2day to rodriguez and overnight at s miguel island that hasnt done it before. There is a somewhat common weather pattern there, ...there are SEA protected anchorages but Beware a howling near 30 knot Northwest wind that comes up around sunset and seems to blow 35-45knot gusts. blows like a banshee. The island and kelp seem to keep the sea down but you wont sleep well the first time you hear its loud whistle off every antenna, fishing rod etc. Once you get used to it and learn not to set your beer or sandwich anywhere the wind can catch it you will be fine. check the santa barbara channel entrance bouy wind and add about 6-8knots. but if you have a boat that can do rodriguez and good ground tackle, enjoy the show. you probably already know this. |

Jeff, scratch what I said about virgin land. I made the mistake of promicing my best friend and his 12 year old an epic day...we had less than a dozen mixed rock fish for 4 anglers...Went all the way to Gorda...Next time I will only promice a boat ride. But this is only the 2nd time I had a bad day up there. Boarded by F&G who could not have been nicer. Saw a Huge shark by White Rock 1, had to be 12 foot from fin to tail. I have no idea what kind of shark it was though. |
