Good News all
Ken Skinner went on a 210 out of the harbor towards the old weather buoy 25 miles and had 2 nice 15-20lb albies. He said their was all kinds of meter marks and life everywhere. He didn't launch until 8:30 and was back by 3:30, the wind brought him back a little early. First jig strike was at 20 miles and the second hit at 15. We'll be open at 5:30 and Deke will have the chovies waitin.
Oh yeah Rockcod was excellent today with full limits, 20+ Lings and 11 Halibut
Good Fishin

Fished shallow with the family today down off mdo, just above the closure line. I call it the boiler pot and you got to watch the boilers if you're in less than 70'. Great bite on the lings. Kept 8. All the small rockfish you want.

Fished San Diego on Sunday the 26th for 6 Albies up to 20lbs and one Dodo 6 1/2 lbs. Did not get onto the fish until later in the afternoon. Weather was flat, calm, warm. The water was the same and deap blue. Man, do they have it good. Other boats caught some Yellow tails, Blue Fin and a few stipe Marlins. 35 to 50 mile from shore. They are so spoiled down there, Lots of fishing area, beautiful weather most of the time. Our summer will be gone here by the time we get a weather window to fish for our Tuna.

Fished out of Morro today. Great bait from Doug and great conditions but the fishing was tough!

We stuck it out and managed 3 halibut a nice ling and a few small rockfish for the day. Would have been 4 'butts but had a gaff error :-( best fish of the day.

Between Cayucos and the Ab Farm. 50' deep.

psl live bait report; finally caught our first load of chovies this am, they are in the 5 to6 inch range pretty good size for this time of year. There is just a very light mix of sardines in the mix. Should last all week and through the weekend if the firbags leave it alone..Charlie went flatty fishing when we got in and by 12:30 had 4 legals in the skif not bad for a bait hauler, but what do we know ? open daily at 5.00 am thanks Deke 801-0970

i am one to call you the "fishmaster". is it true that thursday you wanted to go north but got pushed south and still caught 3 keepers butts, 12 bolina and a ling. the next day with such good results south, you turned north and still caught butts all in a skiff that the motor doesnt start. LOL. you are the man. To the guy who wants to restore the old boat. i agree with the two part epoxy but it is pricey. if you dont mind not picking your color, you can call around and find some that they want to get off there shelves. or nearing exp. dates.

Ray,
Hey, here's John's report:
Arriving from the southern hemisphere:

This morning's 2 to 3 foot southern hemisphere (200-degree
deep-water) swell (with a 12-14 second period) will
gradually decrease through tonight.

A 1 to 3 foot southern hemisphere (225-degree deep-water)
swell (with a 13-19 second period) will develop along our
coastline on Tuesday, remaining at this height but with a
shorter period on Wednesday through Friday.

A very low-height, long-period southern hemisphere swell
will arrive along our coastline on Sunday through next
Monday.

The longer-range models are showing a lot of storm activity
in the Tasman Sea, which normally does not produce any
swell along the California coastline.

Thank goodness...crazy what that S swell did. I'd still fish deep if I were you! Like 60-100' or deeper if you can.
Hope you get back out on the water!
later,
steve

Another thought! Gel coat will restore amazingly well. Try rubbing compound and polish on a spot before anything. Unless you can actually see glass fibers coming through, that should be all you need.

Mark, on second thought, if it's in good shape you should be able to wetsand, fill scratches with interlux #7 wetsand to 220 and finish coat. No primer.

I used that Interlux poly on the Fiesta hull this year and it came out good too. But we sprayed it.

Mark, go with and industrial paint. That old glass takes paint really well. Anyone looking for good paints needs to call a gal named Ginger, GNS Industries, 489-3501. She managed De Angelo's industrial piant department for years and when they let her go they went to crap. Ginger's the best to ask what you need and you can do it yourself with industrial two part paint very easily. Order it early and she'll usually have her driver bring it out the same day. It will look better than gel coat ever did.

I use a great two part, high build primer that sands easily made by Amershield. I think it's called Amercoat 370. Come by and I'll show you. You can do the prep work and have someone shoot it for you, even an auto body shop, and do it for cheap. Go with Emron (not Amron) if you want a superhigh auto like finish. Amershield Amron is tougher and Carboline is better gloss but not as tough. But ask Ginger. You could also get a kid from Cuesta's auto body class to do the prep work. Maybe he'd shoot it too. Or if you don't mind paying for it just have an autobody shop do it.

Mark,
Interlux makes a 2 part polyurethane finish that will work. It's called Interlux Perfection Two Part Polyurethane. I've used it, or maybe it's predecessor a number of years back, to refinish a couple of Hobie Cats and a Naples Sabot. Smaller projects but similar application.

You can actually mix and brush this on. As it cures, it contracts and pulls all the brush strokes out leaving what appears to be a sprayed finish. It can be sprayed if you have the ability to do so.

Grab your ankles, though. It's about $100 per HALF gallon. There are other similar coatings out there, I'm just familiar with this one. It held up extremely well....nearly as well as gel coat.

Question: I want to restore and older fiberglass boat that has been sitting in my fathers backyard for some years, but not sure if I can or if it’s worth it. It’s a small 15 foot fiberglass boat. It is darn near brand new except the gel coat is gone off the boat, if you look at the boat the glass sparkles in the sun, and if you touch it the top layer is like dust and will get into your hands most of the boat is like this. Is there an easy paint on gel or is there sanding with a controlled air mask that needs to be done.

If anyone has an idea or someone that you could suggest for a reasonable price Id appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mark

Halibut Tourney Results
Saturday
1- Greg Malik 26.2
2- Bob Hardy 15.2
3- Adam Enticknap 13.0
4- Tommy Patton 12.4
5- Tom Foran 9.2
Sunday
1- Andy Koch 54.2
2- Ray Nanini 14.0
3- Tyler Enticknap 9.2
4- Ronnie Andrews 8.8
tie 5- Nick Reisbeck 8.4
tie 5- Adam Enticknap 8.4

We had 55 fishermen enter this year. We heard
more were going to fish but, I guess the South
swell stopped some. Overall it was a good tourney with Andy, Greg and Bob Sweeping just about all the prize divisions and the side pot.
Jared did an excellent job on the BBQ as allways with plenty of food.
We want to thank everyone who participated and helped out in the tournament this year.
Talk to you all soon
Good Fishin

WEATHER/SST/CHLORO/PROSPECTS

The weather is getting better as the wind and swell come down. Wednesday looks pretty good.
SST looks like a white cat in a snow storm with no good shots for days. No chlorophyll for even longer. The cloud free composites seem to indicate that the good looking water we had on the 21st is gone ! So again it looks like we are all dressed up with no where to go.

San Diego is getting albacore as close as 25 miles which is good for them but has not meant much for us in the past.

Bayside reported 25 albacore caught by a NOAA research vessel a couple days ago so that area out of SC/HMB appears to still be holding fish.

Greetings,
Just got a text message from Pablo. Since no one has posted yet...thought I'd post what I heard.
"Over 50 fishermen, well under 20 fish (for the weekend?). 54.3 lbs Hog won it!!!"
I fished with Aaron today in MB. Never seen the bite slower (or total lack thereof). Three of us fished about 8 hours for not 1 bite! Unbelievable!!!
Could only get better than this weekend!
lat,
steve

We picked up some great baits this morning from Doug and headed out into Estero for the flatties. Fished multiple spots in 50 to 90 feet all the way to China for a complete blank. Painful. Hopefully it will pick up again after the south swell dies. I hope the tourney guys did a lot better.

Fished halibut for a couple hours this morning out of MB....I expected the south swell to be nasty but it was very fishable...We had only 2 bites on the jumbo sardines....One flattie was just short and fish #2 got munched by a seal right at color as I looked on helplessly with net in hand..A couple seals were stupid/hungry enoungh to repeatedly eat our bait rigs right off the bottom in 70ft,which made for a lot of re-rigging....A couple guys in a C-Dory were bounce balling in the same area just north of the Rock and I saw them net at least 1 nicer flattie just on the tide change...We headed in at 10:30..Jeff

Matt, In regards to your bait tank - I'm a huge fan of the bags that hang over the back.
http://www.aquaworld-products.com/superbags.html

They keep bait in the best condition much, much better than anything I've used in over 30 years and they save deck space. You do have to install two permanent brackets that it slips into but since it only needs a supply line (overflow is over the side) it's very easy to remove and stow. They don't need a light unless it's night and usually normal deck lights will suffice. I've never had a probelm fishing around them like a swim step since they don't go into the water like and outboard or an outdrive. Bags last about three years outside in the sun and are much cheaper to replace than the whole package was. I don't know how long they last if you take care of them. No I don't carry them in the store. Though I probably should.

If you do go with a solid tank try to get semi transparent or at least white inside. The fish need to see where they are swimming so they don't get beat up and it makes them easier for you to see when trying to catch them! And use a light at night for the same reasons. I used led spa lights ($10 ish) on the Fiesta wired into the running lights so someone doesn't forget to turn them on and they work great. I'd be happy to look at your boat if you need suggestions.

Michael Gorgita: I have a 1998 Johnson, Ficht fuel injected, that has given me great service. All service work done by Greg at Mark's Marine in Santa Maria. Honest, stand-up guy. He sell's E-Tec's and recently did a re-power for someone out of PSL. Personally, I'll need a re-power soon and will probably go to Marty for a Yamaha or Suzuki 4-stroke, just bought 2 gallon's of oil the other day $55.00!!

Greetings,
What a difference a day makes. Take Taurus' advice....fish deep tomorrow. Got a nice scoop of dines from Deke and headed N of the lighthouse...choppy seas, but no wind this morning.
Fished from 40-70' in the same spots we've been hammering them for 1 30" 'but (60') and no raked baits. Super-slow. Caught a few rockfish early, but then that shut down too. Guys on the radio were having similar luck!
The ocean was very topsy turvy...it looked like crap inside PSL, crazy amount of surge inside and 3' sets on Port Beach!
Good luck to all the halibut fishermen...I think it will be tough tomorrow.
best fishes,
steve

Loose battery connections are a great way to irreparably fry the stator on a two-stroke; been there done that, hope this prevents someone else from same.

tip...this big swell will push the halibut to deeper water...most of the bait also left the harbor today with the swell...if i were looking for a big one, i'd stay outside of 15 fathoms...they just won't be in the shallower areas like they have been.

Just got back from the port and Marti said the sidepot is a go. $100 per boat, bring cash. This could be a good payout if enough guys get in. Half to big fish and half to best five fish for the boat over the two days. This is good for guys that do well but might not have a big fish.

Steve..your story reminds me of a time when my battery decided to die on me, 15 miles from home, on a weak anchor in the surfline. Swells were lifting my bayrunner 22 up and down and if the anchor had pulled we were going on the beach. I pull started my 90 hp johnson on the third pull and got the hell out of dodge. Damn was I freaked out and got two new batteries the next day.

Man if there was a market for fog Morro Bay would have a corner on it. I'm amazed that day after day we don't get a decent SST or Chlorophyl shot where the bay area (Santa Cruz, Half Moon and Monterey) get a decent shot routinely anb they have fog, what gives?

Steve, West Marine and many auto parts stores sell those emergency 12v starters...just keep it topped off and bring it with you on the boat...it has pos and neg clips for the terminals...it's good for emergencies but it always pays to check your grounds and your batt...

Cool guys...thanks for the suggestions.
I think Marty is spot on with the choke...I did not pull that (usually don't have to after the morning start), but that makes since now. Plus I may need to pull harder:-)
I don't have a spare because it is a 15' skiff (no room and trying to conserve weight)...but now I'm thinking of putting a little battery somewhere for emergencies.
How big do you think it would have to be to start a 30 hp? Motorcycle battery size?
Thanks again,
steve

Another tip for the battery connections is to grease the entire connection, it helps the electrons flow, just kidding, it prevents air getting to the silver plate or lead. A good film of grease will help prevent corrosion. I use it on most of the electrical connections, including trailer lights and trailer connectors. Any grease will do, including wheel bearing grease, as long as it will stick to the metal. Mobil 28 is a great synthetic that is used in the electrical industry.

Every time I have an engine starting problem with my 55 horse Yahama, it is a bad connection at the battery terminal due to looseness or corrosion. Remove the leads and clean all contact points with sandpaper or steel wool and reconnect. Always works for me...

Ok Halibut tourney guys, if you have bigger boats
I suggest going in Friday and getting a mooring.
We will have a minus tide around 7:30 Sat morning
and we'll get you guys out as soon as you check in. You can pay the fees anytime tommorrow or when you check in. I'll have taxi runnin first
load off the dock and the following rides off the pier.(too avoid congestion with launching)
We are going to start check-in at 5:am at the store. You guys that have fished the tourney in the past know the routine.
Cool, that being said we had 10 boats out today
with limits of rockfish and 12 halibut (counting Steves) We'll be open tommorrow at 5:30

Steve on your outboard when battery dies or elect. start will not work, make sure Choke is pulled out before using pull cord. Even if the motor was just shut down or warm. Yamaha, Honda,
Suzuki, etc. four stroke all have this problem of hard starting without choke on.

Good Fishin
Marty

ideas, on outboard starting,

is/are plug/s fouled? outboards are harder to pull start if gap is wet or slighly carboned.
if not...
is motor cool and needs choke to draw fuel that may have "hot soak" evaporated.
other ?
is motor flooded ?
is tank vent clear
is filter clean
is kill switch cover letting moisture in and grounding spark.
lots of simple things before deep diagnosis will normally find culprit.

why is your battery week? why no spare?

let us know what you find or we assume John/Taurus got it right with the pull harder comment.

just razzin, stuff/it happens to everyone some times.
dont want to be in a bad place and have that happen.

It is an electric start, but a tiller drive. The electric start is not a key, but just a button on the side of the motor. Do I need to push that in?
Definitely did something wrong...it didn't even think about starting:/

Greetings,
Fished this morning out of PSL. Got a sweet scooop of killer 'dines from Deke (who has pleny of bait for the weekend...he's even sleeping on the boat to insure no piracy!!!).
Tried to head N, but was met by white caps and choppy, steep seas at 5:45. Turned around and headed down to Shell. Ended up with 3 keeper 'buts (24-30") that we caught in about 45-50' of water. Excellent ling and bolina bite too, ended up with about a dozen very nice sized bolina, 1 keeper ling and 4 shorts!
Big thanks to PSL harbor patrol for coming to our rescue....almost. We did a super long drift and the motor wouldn't turn over...tried the pull cord but it wouldn't make the motor fire (anyone know why that didn't work?). Fortunately after sitting for a half hour the battery mustered up enough juice to just barely start the motor. Harbor patrol was already on their way and made sure we were ok. Thanks guys! Thanks for the offer of a tow Lee!!!
Be out there again tomorrow.
best fishes,
steve
Note to self: Get new battery tonight!

Though that was funny seems best we just talk about fishing. no reason to ruin a good chat board.
