Eat it the same day, Bonita's in the top three for me. Try to keep it a day longer in the fridge or worse freeze it, I agree it's cat food. That's why there's no commercial market, it just don't keep.

Hali's been slow inside Morro but hear some bigger ones being caught out front in 60 - 100 feet.

The fish in the top photo are Skipjack Tuna. I've never eaten one.

As for Pacific Bonito, I agree John!

Last week I was given a jar of Boney caught out of PSL last November when they were going off here. The fish were cared for properly and it was fantastic eating! I've smoked lots of Bonies that I caught in waters south of Sandy Eggo and it is also fantastic.

Heads up, don't ever take your boat trailer to Absolute Auto on Capitolia and Sacramento St in SLO for break work. First they bid a new master break cylindar and line flush for $365 but then they called me to ask if I would show them how to install it. Then they asked me to make two trips to the auto parts store to buy fittings they didn't have and while I wasn't looking they put auto grease in the wheel bearing rather than marine grease. They found that 15 ft of break line was plugged and needed replacement. That $22 part should take all of 30 minutes to install. So the bill came to $698.86. I said that if I had known that the extra break line would cost me $350 extra I would have put it in myself. By the way, the last time I had the bearings packed a guy who used automotive grease and the bearings lasted two years before the wheel broke off.

Hey Harrel, bait was no problem. There is a receiver right befor you leave the jaws. Bait was large dines. I am not sure what a typical scoop is. All I know is he dipped his net 4 or 5 times. Must of been at least 100 dines all together fo $50. His hours were from 4am to 8am. Sound like he is only there when there is enough busines though. Not sure how to find out if he is going to be open except when he post on coastside. Heard of a great bite at 36.07-123.35 out and down from there. Running out of Monterey on Wednesday. Gotta get em while their here!

Did you go out of HMB ? What is the bait situation there ? I heard that someone broke in to the receiver.

The marine layer is breaking up now so we should have some good images today. Hope it clear by 2pm so we can get a decent chlorophyll.

Otter Diver, if your going North, I would launch out of HMB. 40 to 50 miles out of HMB versus 80 plus out of Monterey. Fished yesterday for a double and 2 singles. Most I heard was 15. Seemed most had under 10. 37.20-123.20 - 37.35-123.35. Go now because the wind is comming back on Thursdat pm.

122.05 34.3 is looking pretty good on the partial shot we got. solid break and fairly blue... 80 miles though.

For an 80 mile run I'm tempted to head to Monterey and known good numbers.

Need to decide pretty soon lol... fishing somewhere tomorrow.

ran out saturday past the old weather bouy to find 58 degree water and no sea life. continued on a 210 til we found 59 degree water. set our lines and an hour later, purple rapala goes off. after a little scrambling we get the fish to gaff, 21 lbs. trolled til 1130 and called it a day. not bad for a half day trip. sorry no numbers, didn't bother to look, too exited i guess.

Ray:
Wish I had some good news for you but I don't. I think that our areas inside the 122 line were pretty much plowed over the weekend with only about a half dozen tuna caught. The only area that might not have been checked is the area 0n the 121 line below the 34:40 line. I suspect, based on a good report from outside the Davidson, That "our " fish are still outside the 122 line. The latest SST shows the warmest water out there. Don't think the forecast for wednesday would be good for a long run outside the 122 line.

BA Stewart--thanks, good safety reminder for all, especially since monitoring of 16 is a CG requirement if the radio is even "on".

Harrel I've got good range on the boat but Oregon is kinda outa the question :-), could sure use some good news prior to Wednesday morning. Hoping hoping hoping.

Steve H--Congrats on your trip. Sheesh I'd like to just be able to *look* at a fresh salmon at this point. Would like to hear more about the Coho, if/when you have time. How being caught--trolling, drifting, casting etc? Gear class?Ocean or river? Hafta use barbless hooks? Bait or lures? Do they jump much after the hookup? What is the local situation for renting a boat/guide etc? TX! RC

Oregon Report:
Greetings from Newport,
Man, I wish it didn't rain 8 months out of the year up here! Anyhow, never got ride out for tuna...but did get out for salmon and crabbing. Went out Friday about 10 miles and once we found the Coho is was WFO. In a little over an hour we caught 20+ fish and our 9 keeper hatchery fish by 10 a.m.:-) Nice sized coho from 8-14 pounds. We had several doubles and 2 triples!!! It was amazing. Went out yesterday in a little zodiac and got 14 dungies and landed 1 salmon, but it was wild.
Lots of folks getting tuna out 40-50 miles...averaging probably from 20 fish/boat. Hopefully I'll get out in a couple weeks in my friends boat.
Sorry to hear there aren't that many tuna there.
best fishes,
steve

One more thing Eric;

There is an experimental microwave based SST that can look though clouds being tested. Right now I think it is pretty low resolution like 25km.

I think it would be usefull early in the year to see what's coming and where it is headed. Don't see how it would tell us much now as to where the best spot would be to look for LFT. Need high resolution SST and chlorophyll.
It would be an interesting exercise to go back in their archives and see if the early data this year showed the warm water hitting Oregon first and with it the albacore. It sure seems that the main body of albacore are in Oregon again.

Didn't hear of a single fish caught today out of a dozen or more boats.

Has anyone looked at the HYCOM hybrid sst stuff from the navy? Fairly interesting, part realtime data mixed with a forecasting model. I can only find fairly low res stuff but it at least points to trends when we don't get realtime shots and could be a useful tool.

This latest shot has a pretty nice looking, solid, connected, plum headed right at us... http://www7320.nrlssc.navy.mil/GLBhycom1-12/navo/uswestsstnowcast.gif

Put that radio on scan or tri/dual watch if you can.

1 chan. 68 only not best strategy IMHO(if choice), or if no scan capability let others know to bring you in the loop if there is one. hope you only need your radio to brag and tell us how well your doing and to zoom us on the fish if need be.

Sounds like they had decent fishing Between the Guide and the Pioneer today. A boat a little North of that area had 25 and many boats were in the teens inthe Pioneer area. Leaving HMB a 4am tomorrow.

We put in @ 4:30 am in Morro heading for the bait dock, heard on the radio that it was closed???? Put the Radon 21 in reverse at the bait dock and lost the shift control cable, WTF? Our controls were froze in reverse so we shut down. We drifted down the bay and were able to side tie at the T pier. A lot of boats cruised by in a hurry to hit the grounds ( understandably) but offered no help. The Harbor Patrol said that it would be 2 hours. Thank you Steve4Baja for the tow back to the ramp.
It is nice to know that there are people out thare willing to help out. Thanks Steve!

Launched out of PSL this morning and ran out towards the old weather buoy. Got the lines in the water at 8am in clear blue, 57 degree water. At 04/06 around 930am started marking some bait and a bunch of marks. Just as we were contemplating dropping some bait down a rod took off. Black and Purple cedar plug about 100 feet back. Water temp where the fish was caught was 58.1. Nothing after, and all the marks disappeared just as fast.

Only heard of 4 fish caught amongst the boats that were out there. One boat had a double, but that was it for the day for them last I heard.

Scratch fishing, but atleast it was really close!

We'll be making a bee line towards the donut (210) out of Morro Bay. Depending on the wind forecast we may go 30+ miles. if there are other boats running try to spread out from us to broaden the search area. we'll be monitoring 68, I think the boat is named sea angel. or i may be contacted by cell at 610-1525

Eric, I will havethe boat int he water sunday too late to fish and have kidfishing with little ones on monday but I may run tuesday AM and/or possibly wednesday.
forecast prelim looks better tue Wed than monday but these "shorter" trips can be made if fish are found.
Someone out of psl or morro will likely run sunday before sun up to beat wind, old weather buoy was aprox ~245deg mag psl not 210 degr but 245degr psl gives very decent return headings. Wont have internet on the water but if We run, it will likely be toward last reported fishrather, than pre planned search.
hope its a beginning of a "tuna season".
tight lines and screaming reels

Fished solo out of PSL today with some of those chovies that arrived at Deke's. Complete inhalation compared to the let them eat it size of the 'dines. Ended up with a limit of rockfish, five sand sole, and two legal flatties (27" and 28") and two shorts. Conditions remained small boat fishable til past noon with some amazingly clear water outside the jetty.

I just spoke with a buddy who went out 20 for no fish. I didn't get any details as to where he went but would assume the location of the old bouy. I've hitched a ride and will be out looking in the a.m.

Albacore report.
Talked to " Big easy" a few minutes ago. He worked the area where the fish were caught yesterday for no fish. Heard another boat say no luck either but don't know where they fished.
Should be a few more boats out looking tomorrow.

NOAA forecast for the weather bouy says 10 to 15, 4 ft. at 11 sec. sounds pretty fishable to me.it's only 20 mi. not far to go if you get turned around by the conditions.

Marti;
Doubt it will be 30 kts out there. Probably 15-20 by noon. Just enough to make it sloppy fishing. If the Santa Maria buoy is down in the morning then there might be 6 hours or so to fish but if it is blowing then probably not.

This same lousy weather is forecast for another week. Great to hear that there are some LFT in our close water. It sure looked good a week ago when we had that one good SST.
