Ahmed, Being honest, I am not as skillful of an angler yet to use lines a light as 8lbs. Additionally at the area I was fishing, there are underwater structures which had rubbed against my line when the kingfish was making its run after hitting the (I regard as a) small popper. Infact I saw it following the popper a few times, coming just about a couple of feet away from where I was standing.....before hitting it. I ever tried using lighter braids but it just snapped while casting my lures so from then I decided to use 15lbs line as the lightest. Maybe you could teach me how to properly use lighter lines. Ciao! |

Hi Musa, The fish you have in the picture seems to be a Grunter, locally called the Nagroor. Generally available in the market and is for sure edible. What time do you intend to go to Ghantoot on the coming friday. Saleh, The line class for king fish depend on the size you intend to catch. Personally I have experienced the kings to be not great fighters. The only fight they give is their first run after that I have experienced that they run towards the boat. Thanks |

Hey Abdul you call 15 pounds line is light for kingfish? Kingfish is the easy fish to land and can be landed on 8 lbs line easily. |

Hello Guys, I have been in this part of world since last 7 years and has been going for fishing for 4-5 years. Most of the time, we had the best loaction for fishing in Abu Dhabi. Last weekend, I was on the same spot near refinery/Electric Poll just before the city while going toward AD from Dubai but could get a small sherry in late evening. Next Time, I do plan to visit Northern emirates as somebody advised it as the best loaction. Havent tried Deep Sea Fishing yet, but look forward for it if someone is ready to pool for the trip. pls mail me shamshad66@hotmail.com I am staying at Al Nahda Sharjah these days. Happy Fishing-Keep an eye on your lines. |

Not an expert in trolling. Best lure I had used was the Yo-Zuri crystal minnow greenish or red head, about 4-5in long. Catching barracudas is the easiest thing in life . NO MATTER what your lure or bait, if they are present........you'll catch them. Had never caught a kingfish trolling. All the kingfish I caught were while jigging using 80gms jig from Jazz Jig....believe it or not....all using one particular jig. Even barracudas love it. It was put out of comission just after five trips....due to badly injured. Now keeping it as a momento. Browse through previous postings, you will come across it. Closest thing available in the UAE is the Duel TAMENTAL polyhedron jig. Orange or pinkish colour is very effective for hamour. Ciao! |

Yea my friend hook a needlefish but it got away, gave a nice show on its way to shore...Im just wondering how is a sabiki rig useful when this fish usually stays close to the surface of the water? should I use a floater? By the way I want to thank you for your advise on al ghantoot! Best fishing spot ive ever been to in my life! (since I started serious fishing 2 months ago this shouldnt be surprising). Casted the sabiki rig and within 30 seconds I hooked 2 fish...one with a black spot on its back on each side and the other was shiny silver in color with BIG eyes...Lost the sabiki rig on the second cast so i used normal wight and "size 2" hooks. then while I was taking a nap with the rod in my hand I felt a strong pull...Started reeling the line in and landed 2 fish at once! dont know what they are called but they had spikes on their backs..probably 800 grams each! also caught a seabream. the rest not worth mentioning...used old prawn and shrimp as bait. 10 pm until 8 am. Not much action an hour after sunrise. Tried using a plug which i borrowed from a friend but with no use...it was about 3 inches in length and too light to cast out more than 10 meters out..I also never tried trolling before in my life so it wasnt much use... Also want to thank everyone on the forum. Learned a lot from the posted info. Abdul can you give me the 101 of trolling? would love to catch a barracuda or a kingfish! Im sure you understand how fishing can be so excited especially as a new comer like me! Thanks a lot buddy.. |

Caught a pair of those (at once) by using sabiki rigs with prawn/shrimp as bait. The hooks have to be of size 14-16 and you will have to be quick to set the hooks otherwise their sharp teeth will cut off the line. While the line is being retrieved, they will give a bit of topwater acrobatics. Ciao! |

Holla, Any of you guys know how to catch needle fish? at least thats what I think that school of fish was...Thought they were baracudas in the begining but they where much less agressive n thinner than I expected. They definitly wherent halfbeaks so I guess they where needle fish. Smallest one was about 2 feet long, the largest one was about 4-5 feet long. If you are intersted in catchin em go to ghantoot right before sunrise and youll see them swimming around Tried everything to catch them but they just kept on pulling the sardine of the hook! |

Musa, For predatory fishes like kingfish, barracuda and queenfish, try casting those 4-5in plugs/poppers/stickbaits/pencils to replicate an injured baitfish. Flyfishing is also quite effective......as proven by Tacklebloke/fishpals. As for halfbeaks, use a suspended float rig with prawn/shrimp as bait.....but with tiny hooks. As for others which are bottom feeders, just use the normal hook and sinker rig or even one of those sabiki rigs will do. Saw lots of campers at that place during weekends BUT the saddest thing is....ALL THE RUBBISH which they left behind!!!!! Hope everybody can be more environmentally concious and responsible. Ciao! |

Hey abdul. I was on the way bak from abu dhabi 2day so i passed by ghantoot. it was a very nice area, so i made some calls and my friends and I are gona go camping there this weekend. I saw the road tracks u told me about and it seems like a good clean area to fish! You think it would be productive this time of the year though? Gna be fishing at night till a bit after sunrise so that the waters are as cool as possible. Any other tips would be great (bait, hooks). Asad never mind the no fishing sign. There were no humans as far as the eye could see...I also didnt see any skiers around. Guess its too hot for that this time of the year...By the way any of you fellows are welcome to come if you want. My number is listed in the previous post... best wishes. |

Musa, Thats the place. Once you entered the junction, just follow the roadsigns towards "the bungalows". Its one of those resort kind of place. You will need to go on a bit of unpaved road track. I had ever hooked up a kingfish there but due to the light line I was using (15lbs braid), the line snapped. Other fishes we had caught ther were needlefish, halfbeak, Sherie, Queenfish and squid. We have also seen others catching barracudas, golden trevallies and stingrays. You might also see turtles swimming there BUT after about 8.30-9.00 the channel will be used by water skiers!!!! Ciao! |

Yo shahzad thanx for the info! I used to fish at the creek. There is usually always action there. But fish caught there can not be eaten so i am trying to find another good spot on the open beach. Anyone has any tips? I tried an area next to burj al arab on the way to dubai but i had to climb those big rocks. Couldnt cast properly and turned out with no fish at all. Any info would be very appreciated...cheers. |

Hi guys, Just want to share something with you all. INCASE any of you guys happen to be in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur in particular....make it a point to go to a very BIG fishing tackle shop...by the name of KEPONG TACKLE. Was there just about last week. I spent a good 3 hours inside the shop!!!!!! Its the largest tackle shop in Malaysia. Looking/browsing through all the stuff, noticed the very HUGE selections of SHIMANO products....as they have a fully dedicated Shimano "shop in a shop".....which (alone) is already bigger than any (two combined ) of the tackle shops at the Al Ras area!!!!! The prices are quite good as well BUT the best buys will be those of ABU GARCIA brand as this tackle shop is the importer and distributor of Abu Garcia products within Malaysia. As a comparison, the Abu Garcia REVO Skeet Reese baitcaster is retailed at US$280 in the states but is only about US$192 there !!!!!! The light spinning reel 701LX (which I got one for myself ) is retailed at US$109 in the states but was only US$59 there!!!! Another best buy there are braided lines. Spiderwires EZ braid 20lbs and 30lbs in 300yds spool is only RM62 or about AED65 each!!!!! They carry all sorts of brands/products......from cheap stuff to the (EXTRA) high end!!!! Accurate, Avet, Shimano, Daiwa, Ryobi, Tica, Banax, Fisherman, Seven Seas, Jigging Masters, Expert, Eupro....sort of you name it...they have it!!!!! The address of the shop is as folows; No. 62-68, Jalan Besar Kepong Batu 8 Kepong 52100 Kuala Lumpur Tel : +603627404601 It a 10-15 mins taxi ride from Kuala Lumpur Main city. Major landmark....Al Amaniah Masjid(Mosque) which is just about 50m on the opposite side of the road. Ciao! |

I am back in Brunei now. Been trying to go offshore fishing but the VERY UNSETTLED WEATHER is not permitting. Went for pond fishing with light gear yesterday...using 8-16lbs setup. Caught a 3.5kgs Pacu (vegetarian cousin of the piranha). Sure was fun!!! Anyway, keep intouch bro. my email address csalatifa@rba.com.bn Ciao! |

Amir bro! Why not eat the fish?! Caught a nice 1 kg black bream was really excited to devour it this evening! But then again I could see the water wasnt so clean. Man haha you killed my mood! I am the kind of fishermen who likes to eat what he catches . Can you refer me good spots in Dubai where the fish caught is edible? Ilive close to emirates mall so if there are spots on the open sea in jumairah where theres good action and open at night then id appreciate if you share the info =)...Heard the palm has good action but is there a place where non residents can sneak in and fish there? Cheers bro. |

Have to agree, smart rod & reel set up can't wait to catch a fish on it, so light a 1kg cudda will be fun, lot better than just cranking them in, whole idea is to play the fish. Guys have a good trip home. Bod. Just a quick note....if Adamh still has some ABU 6500's left, i suggest u get one, they are superb and cast like a dream (with levelwind removed!!) thanks Adam :-) |

Musa, Go to Al Ras area where few fishing tackle shops are located. Its just behind the Publlic Library along the creek on the deira side. Other landmarks there are; St George hotel and Civil Defence(Fire Department) building. You should be able to get most if not all that you require from the shops there e.g Al Fajar marine, Al- Aneed and Sea Star. further along the road leading towards the fish market is another big shop selling marine outboard engines as well as other fishing equipments. MEN!!! Whats all this talk about "its too hot" n what not! THE WEATHER IS FINE wen u know wen to go out! Its 8 am now and i just got back home been fishing since 12 at night under al maktoom bridge...got a couple of bites nothing major then at sunrise it was like a bonanza but i was already out of the good bait which is shrimps! had to rely on dough which wasnt so effective...saw sum indian worker who used dough aswell, i guess it was better quality and he caught about 8-9 fish in less than 30 minutes with sum big ones reaching a 3 kilos in wieght...Ok heres my question, im new at this so please tell me what rigs are BEST to use at this time. Caught some black bream and sherry but I think I wouldve caught much more if I was better prepared. Also can anyone refer me to a good bait shop where I can get good quality hooks better than the useless ones I got from carfour? cheers and sorry for the long messege. Its cuz i havnt slept in a couple of days! |

hey all. Caught a nice 1+ kilo stingray in Fujairah using shrimp by casting from the beach. Went to the spot close to the oil refinery in fujairah on the way to khurfakan. Open beach with very clean waters. Also caught a lot of needle fish. Saw 3 huge red snappers and a few bonefish but didnt manage to get them. 2 am to 7 am was the prime time. It was also a plus to watch the beautiful sunrise. Oh and I almost forgot, if any of you fancy some fresh crabs, then thats the place to go. We were running around the whole place but managed to catch more than 10 crabs on the beach and bbqed them. |

Raemoir, don't know that fishery? I was in Aberdeen for a couple days then drove through to Inverness and saw that loch Insch fishery is for sale, wish I could afford that, nice way to live. That was a big rainbow on the dry fly! Bod |

Bodach, I fly fished at my local fishery called Raemoir trout fishery, in the aberdeenshire area. My biggest was a 11lb rainbow caught on a dry fly! It really is a great place, and by far the best place I have ever fished in the world. |

Hi Nick I am hearing many reports since i caught my milk fish in AD that they seem to be in a few of the emirates such as UAQ in the mangroves and i've heard of them in Fujairah also to. Anywhere there are flats, breakwaters, mangroves and areas where a lot of algae congregates. Best flies to use are "Arnies milky dream" which you can google for the pattern. It's basically trying to represent algae. These fish are difficult to catch but believe me if it took one year to catch one and i caught nothing else all year, it would be worth the wait. A fantastic experience and so far this year i've caught 2. Tight lines. adam |

Hey there. First of all I am brand new to the forum, but I got a real passionate for fishing as I am sure most of you have! I know a lot of people ask about fishing location but like one of you said before, anywhere with water is a good fishing spot. My question is about TIMINGS. I usually fish before sun up at around 2-3 am. I get frequent bits at that time, but do any of you recommend other timings like sunset? Havnt really tried that timing in a while. On another issue, I am always up for a fishing trip anywhere in the UAE. Haven’t really got a lot of friends my age who enjoy fishing like I do, so if any of you is going out fishing, id be up for it. 0505442855 is my number call anytime cuz its the summer! Good catching, Moosa |

Where in dubai is it possible to catch milkfish? I am fasinated by these fish, and would love to have one at the end of my line! What time of the year is the best time to target them? And which baits/flies/lures should I use? Any information would be great! thanks! |

Dear Mir I assure you 199 % that the two fish are different. If you look at the lip of the fish Adam had caught, the two jaws are of similar size. Also, the tail fin is much longer and thinner than the bone fish. Also, your pictures of the bonefish show the jaws to be sloping downwards, perfect for picking up crustaceans. Please believe me as I have seen these fish in that exact lacation, and I have also seen bonefish. They are two different fish!!!!! |

Dear Mir Asad Ali The fish Adam has been catching are definitely MILKFISH, and are definitely not BONEFISH!!! They are very different and have very little resemblance. Bone fish feed off the bottom, in seagrass, on shrimps, prawns and crabs in the flats. These are Milkfish which feed on algae off the surface. |

Hi Adamh, i seen your blog & fish pictures, very cool!! but i think this fish is not milk fish, its bone fish, i received a world record book from IGFA, in this book i saw one topic for bone fish its same looks like that fish which you caught from Abu Dhabi Ar*** ;) Bonefish are called O'io in Hawaii and are mostly related to tarpons, ladyfish & eels. Bonefish get their name because their flesh contains many small bones. i will scan & post the pictures + colum. Regards Mir |

Hi Kim, I was in the Maldives last year. You are right, you are not allowed to fish off the resorts however, there are other options. For a days charter you were looking at around $1000 US. There seemed to be a reasonable chance of picking up a sail fish but having caught Sail fish before i did not fork out the grand! At dusk they also did reef fishing which was a lot cheaper but involved using hand lines. I took my own rods and although you were not allowed to fish from the resort i had success on a day trip to a neighbouring island. Float fish with bait would be my advice. If none of those options take your fancy the fear not, the snorkeling is out of this world and you will pass hour after hour observing all kinds of wonderfull sea creatures. Have fun! Troll |

Hi, guys, I am going to Maldives for holidays. To anyone who fished in Maldives... Is fishing permitted in any resorts there? (Some says that fishing is prohibited from the resorts to protect the environment.) And anyone knows good fishing charter there? |

Fly fishing in Abu Dhabi and it’s getting hotter So headed out of Friday morning after a week full of the same flu/cold that was dogging me the week before. I guess it doesn’t help with the heat outside that has been in town this week and the air conditioned buildings and going from hot to ice cold. I don’t know about you but when i get a cold/flu, everyone knows about it I also needed an excuse to take my mind off Manchester Uniteds awful performance on Wednesday night which truly was painful and embarrassing. Anyway, picked up Sarri along the way and also Bryan who had just returned from the USA on his vacation. He was armed with his float tube that he’d used extensively back in the states on the streams and rivers. After seeing the milk fish so far out in the middle of the channel the last few times we fished, he thought he’d be onto a good thing using the float tube, more on that later. So we arrived at 8am, a bit later than usual and the fishing spot was empty of fisherman/women. Maybe 5 people were there which is nothing in this spot as it’s so open. High tide was passing out and the flats were draining back into the channel. If you get to see this at this spot, it’s magical to watch and if you close your eyes, you can imagine yourself being stood in a river. Open them and it’s just as beautiful with azure blue waters crashing down into the channel.
So we set up and headed off down the bank. Bryan was last to set up as he blew up the float tube with air. Sarri and i cast flies and after 5 minutes i was into the rat of the location, the ever present needle fish. Those who have fished with me before will get that joke, for those of you that haven’t, when i meet you, i’ll enlighten you.. Bryan meanwhile had entered the water and was happily floating by us with one fly rod trolling and the other casting. It was a beautiful day with literally no wind. These are the best days for casting and normally quite productive. Throughout the morning we saw about 5 milk fish, some in the distance and one or two breach in front of us but no schools of them to sight cast to! All morning we caught needle fish after needle fish and had some great fun catching these. There are some decent sized ones in there and we certainly caught our share. I had a couple of small queen fish which were all returned. Sarri had been catching the needle fish all morning to and discovered they have a nice pair of teeth on them when he un hooked one…
Bryan by now had found another use for his float tube, see the pic below and if anyone is interested in marketing these to the lazy boy fly fisherman/woman, i want half as you saw it on here first….
Overall a pleasant mornings fishing, we may be trying a different spot next week so i’ll update you all then. Tight lines Adam |

Went out fishing on the palm. Nothing happened for about an hour so i decided to move spots. When I arrived at my new spot I was setting up my popper when a HUGE splash errupted to the right of me. I quicley finifhes up my knot and casted towards the splash, with the quickest retrieve that I could do a huge head engulfed my small RAPALA popper, and the fight was on. 15 minutes later i landed a 5kg+ queenfish, not bad on 6lb firline and a ultra light dropshot rod! Regards to all Nick |
